A good introduction to ADHD in boys with lots of useful tips and tricks for parents. Some of the information was more specific to the US, but most of the suggestions are applicable wherever you live. The authors also provide additional support material, such as a behaviour tracker and detailed planner to help implement their suggestions.
This book has a vast amount of information about ADHD that is easily accessible to someone who may know nothing about the condition. It is not written in a way that is hard to understand with lots of medical jargon. Everything is explained. It is simple and easy to understand. Each chapter at the end gives you a recap of what you have just read. There are lots of strategies to help you implement into your routine, not only for the child but also to help the parent too. Even though this book is American based and some of it works differently in the UK, it is still worth reading. This book is a great way to get to know more about ADHD, whether you're a parent or family member who wishes to get more insight on the condition.
The Complete ADHD Parenting Guide for Boys: Discover Scientific Strategies to Manage Behavioral Problems, Improve Social Skills and Ensure School Success Without Yelling. (Positive Parenting Book 1) A resource in schools for helping parents understand implications and next steps for dealing with a child on the spectrum of ADHD. It has many personal stories, tied with antidotal evidence. It describes different psychological methods, and the fundamental ideals of those methods. It may help elevate parental anxiety of having their child tested, and labeled.
This had so much great information in it and how different ADHD can be when compared to boys vs girls. A lot of the tips I can really see useful for my teen and will also be telling his Doctor about this book to help others.
First of all, let me start by saying that I am a licensed clinical psychologist who primarily conducts psychological evaluations with individuals with ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, etc.
Overall, this book had accurate information and very useful tips for parents with boys diagnosed with ADHD (as the title suggests). I do plan to suggest many of these tips to parents that I work with.
Some things that lowered my rating: 1. Typos and formatting issues. There was some information that was incorrect like Michael Jordan being one of the greatest "footballers" of all time" or "ADHD is now one of the most extensively studied childhood competitions" (rather than conditions).
2. I understand this book primarily geared toward boys with ADHD, but it would have been nice to see some gender inclusivity with parents. For instance, the author kept writing "moms and dads" throughout the book rather than "parents." Also, what about transgender individuals and ADHD? That is a huge area that is emerging, as many individuals who think that they have ADHD might actually be experiencing gender dysphoria or some other associated diagnosis.
Thank you to NetGalley, QC Harmony, and BooksGoSocial for the opportunity to read and listen to advanced readers/listener copies of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
As a parent of two teenage, neurodivergent children, this book is a brilliant introduction to parenting, understanding and managing the many challenges that you can face.
As well as being a parent, I work in a school with children with additional needs and found the strategies and tools very helpful both at home and in the workplace.
Excellent book, highly recommended.
Thanks to netgalley, the author and the publisher for providing this book to review.
Strategy based book to help parent a child with adhd. Includes strategies for school success, partnering with professionals when needed, emotional regulation, visual cues, cognitive restructuring, routines, affirmations, relationships, boundaries and more. Excellent guide for parents and caregivers.
This user friendly workbook has understandable explanations and suggestions that work. This covers that very difficult time of puberty and all the negatives that are maximized by the perils of ADHD. An excellent tool for parents. I requested and received a temporary EARC from BooksGoSocial vi NetGalley.
The tips for hyperactivity are most valuable to me, but the book has so many ideas to connect and even begins by pointing out advantages of what many view as a disorder.
Having a son diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 7, I have done a lot of research to learn more about it. I am always looking for new tips and tricks to share with him to help give him all the resources he needs to help with every day life. This book is one of those resources. It provides a wide range of information crossing different age levels. If you have a son with ADHD, I highly recommend this book.
