Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) sounds exotic but, because the words are not part of everyday English, many of us may decide against venturing there.
So what is feng shui?
Basically, it is an ancient Chinese art of aligning you with your environment. Practised over many centuries, feng shui looks at the five natural resources of water, earth, fire, metal and wood and how these can be used to improve your lifestyle. It also looks at the layout of your home, office, or work environment, with the idea of helping you select the right elements and where to position them, according to the eight points of the compass (i.e. north, north-east, east, south-east etc.)
You’ll come across some words that may be new to you (e.g. bagua, chi and gua) but don’t panic, as this short awareness trip of just over two thousand words will explain the new vocabulary to you, making them normal to the new student of feng shui and helping that person move through the process of understanding.
Feng shui has many methods of teaching and so this booklet concentrates on only one and, though this booklet contains basic facts, there is still enough information here to feng shui your life to a satisfactory degree. The reader who then wants to know more, or wishes to examine other methods of applying feng shui, can simply use the basic facts learnt here to help them sift through the deluge of information available via books and the internet.
