Hayley Rae Johnson was born on the east coast and raised on the mountainside in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She grew up in a solar-powered house, which led to her spending more time outside or reading and writing than other children of that time. Her favorite past-time was to climb onto the low roof of her father's battery shed, notebook and pencil in hand, to write fairy tales and fantastical adventure stories.

After getting her first two degrees at Colorado State University, she bounced around Denver for a few years, getting her corporate experience. It didn't take long until she missed the call of nature and she returned to her college town, situated at the base of the Northern Colorado foothills and a mountain reservoir, surrounded by glacial-filled rivers.

Today, Hayley Rae is working in higher education by day, writing her series by night and golfing at any time in between. She likes hiking with her German Shepard and a glass of red wine after dinner.

This is a Young Adult fantasy tale about a world where magic is held to a restricted level because of a history of repression by the Ràej, a dynasty of magical rulers. The main character, Terhese, is a secret descendent of the last king, with all sorts of forbidden magical talent she doesn’t even know she possesses. This creates the main conflict of the story, as she tries to learn about magic without revealing her abilities

The secondary conflict, as we expect from YA literature, is social. Our heroine was brought up in a lower-class, completely unmagical household, and her introduction to the Academy of Magic is hampered by her lack of social graces.

This is generally a well-written story, but there are some rather strange lapses. For example, this is a post-medieval society, yet a couple of times a character goes “out for a smoke,” and items like hair gel are mentioned. There is a lot of time taken up by socializing, partying, and interaction with handsome young men. This is standard procedure for a YA story, but when all the other action stops for chapters full of it, the rest of the readers feel left out.

Unfortunately, it turns out in the end that these social manipulations are far more important than they seemed on the surface. The writer’s problem becomes to keep the attention of a larger segment of readers, many of whom will be turned away by the superficiality of the earlier conflict. I suggest the solution would be to give those manipulations a darker twist earlier on, giving us a hint that all is not as it seems.

My main problem with the writing is the use of first person, which switches now and then. Trying to get inside the head of a new first-person narrator is very difficult to do, and in this case, it just gets in the way. Having more than one first-person character in any book is a task for expert writers only.

I also have a problem with the lack of editing. Sometimes I had to read a paragraph twice to figure out what actually happened to whom. I only offer one example: “Like second nature, my hand gravitated towards his waiting on his shoulder to take mine.”

And a final warning. This is the first book in a series, and the ending is about as abrupt a cliff-hanger as I have ever seen. You will HAVE to read the next book.

A good YA fantasy that, with a little tuning up, could appeal to a wider audience.

Although Blood of the Raej is Hayley Johnson’s first novel, it reads like a story from a veteran writer. In fact, it reminds me of Brandon Sanderson’s novel Elantris, but without the overwhelming volume of details that transformed that story into 600 pages. It also has hints of JK Rowling and Jane Austen. Johnson’s novel adds magic to a medieval society situated in a diverse ecological context. It also speaks to vulnerability and empowerment, which are favorite themes for me at this point in my journey. Of course, I also like that a character is named Jensen!

But Jensen Dontane isn’t the main character (no worries… maybe he’ll get a spin-off!). The main character is Terhese, a geographic and cultural outsider among most of the other characters. Frankly, she disappointed me. I wanted a stronger female lead: a character who could embrace her vulnerability without needing kisses and literal hand-holding from predatory males. She accepted her marginalization (and nurtured it) when she could have been an explorer of the spaces where her worlds overlapped. The author has pledged sequels to this book; I hope Terhese can grow into a stronger character as the story lengthens.

The first 20 chapters of the Blood of the Raej are a remarkable first novel. The last chapter, which is a teaser for Book 2, ambushed me with its unexpected energy, raw emotions, and assumptions about my knowledge of the story’s background. I had noted the appearance of Binders earlier in the novel wondering if they would appear again. They do, but recalling their roles and significance was difficult. As for Book 2, I hope the energy and emotions continue while I hope Johnson addresses her assumptions about her readers and explains the complicated incident from the last chapter. Like Terhese, I have so many unanswered questions about the Raej and their downfall. I guess we both must wait for Johnson to answer them.

Blood of the Raej belongs to fantasy genre and it's full of magic , fantasy and mystery. Story circulates around a main plot which is a world where magic or witchcraft is banned or restricted because of a certain history revolving Raej - a dynasty of magic rulers. It's a mixture of YA and Fantasy and revolves around the main character Terhese. As you can see the blurb is quite interesting and intriguing. It's not just a normal magical fantasy but it's much more than that. Content of the book is quite good but it would be much better if it was aligned well. By the context align I meant to say that the story setup is done in middle ages but few phrases are used which doesn't co-relate with it. It's really a fascinating read and you will soon get engage into the story when the mysteries unravel itself. Plotline is interesting and fast paced. You can easily complete this book in a day. Characterization is done well. Writing is lucid and narration is great. Title is apt but I didn't like the cover page (well it's absolutely upto me). Overall a good book and I recommend it to fantasy readers.

Blood of the Raej is a book set in a magical world, Omneth. But due to some history of Raej, practising magic is banished.

Terhese, possess very high magic, the blood of Raej is banned from using it. She looks for an academy to know more about it but will she be able to find something. Will she be able to keep her secret from her friends?

To know what happens with Terhese, do pick up this amazing magical book soon.

This is not just a common fantasy book, much more than that. The world-building is very unique and surprising. The writing style is very gripping and keeps you hooked till the end. I was completely lost in Omneth. I loved the way the story unfolded.

I loved Terhese, she is so charming. Terhese and Jensen, both were amazing.

There were few facts I wanted to know in this book but I’ll have to wait for the next book.
Otherwise, it’s really a very nice and exciting read.

Terhese, a simple girl who is living with her Aunt Chloe and she doesn't have magical powers as that of other people of her age. She always wanted to go to Academy to become a Pebble Pincher but whenever she wanted to pinch a pebble, everything goes wrong. She was in a secret relationship with her best friend's brother, Nathan. But what she wasn't knowing that at the same time he was dating with many girls who is having less magical power than Nathan. Jensen, a friend of her from neighborhood who always care for her helps her by exposing the true nature of Nathan.

At the Academy Ball, she came to know that she have some higher magical powers which is similar to that of late Raej. The people of Omneth, considers Raej power as evil and if anyone possess Raej power then they will punishable to death.

Will anyone find out Terhese's true powers? Will she able to control her powers? What is her future at Academy?

Fantasy is always my quick pick genre. This book made me stick to the book from the beginning to end of the book. Especially after reading the prologue (a long one), the book got my full attention and the rest of the book didn't disappoint me. What I liked the most is, author didn't stick to one protagonist. The book was going through different character's perspective simultaneously and the reader could get complete idea about what each character feels. This is a very unique factor of this book.

Language is lucid and narration is so vivid. The plot development is in good pace and there is no fillers. Each scene has its own importance. Overall I loved this book. Recommended to all fantasy lovers.

BOOK REVIEW — Blood of the Ràej by Hayley Rae Johnson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Magic, secrets, and a heroine discovering a power the world fears.

Terhese has spent her entire life dreaming of becoming an Official, following the rules and proving she belongs at the Academy. But everything changes when her magic erupts in front of everyone, revealing a forbidden power tied to the long-lost Ràej.

Instead of achieving her dream, she becomes a target.

Now Terhese is forced to question everything she’s been taught about magic, the Officials, and the world she thought she understood. While being hunted for a power she never asked for, she finds herself relying on someone who has secrets of his own—and falling for someone who might not be on her side.

I really enjoyed the slow-burn progression of this story. The worldbuilding slowly unfolds while the mystery around Terhese’s power and the truth about the Ràej keeps growing. Watching her go from hopeful student to someone challenging the system around her made the journey really engaging.

The fantasy elements, hidden truths, and hints of romance all blend together in a way that sets up the series well.

✨ What I loved
• the magic academy setting
• the forbidden magic storyline
• the slow-burn romance
• uncovering secrets about the world
• Terhese’s growth as a character

🔮 Overall vibe
A character-driven fantasy filled with secrets, dangerous magic, and a heroine learning that the power everyone fears might be exactly what the world needs.

If you like:
• magic academies
• forbidden powers
• slow-burn fantasy romance
• hidden bloodlines
• strong female leads 📚✨🔮

FAB - BOOK REVIEW OF "Blood of the Ràej" by Hayley Rae Johnson.
Genre: Fiction (Fantasy)

Rating - 4/5

QOTD: What is your favorite fantasy book of all time?
AOTD: I don't have one yet.

"Blood of the Ràej" by Hayley Rae Johnson. I am a person who doesn't read many fantasy books. I don't know, but I don't feel connected with them, but I have read a few books, and I have liked them, which made me pick this book. This book revolves around Terhese, who doesn't know the magical powers she has, whereas The Blood of Raej banned it. She possesses high magical powers. But for how long can she hide that she possesses high magical powers? Then she started to find an academy so she could learn more about it. I liked the fact that the author has dealt with the story's main plot clearly in the first part of the book. This part is all about Terhese's journey of knowing he possessing the magic and not just that we will also get to know about Jensen and Mark. But I wished that we'd like a bit more about Jensen. This book is set in the world called Omneth, and I am in love with that place. This book is very intriguing to read, and it gives you a tour of Omneth, which is a place full of magic. I loved how the story was magnificent yet straightforward. The language is lucid. This is one of those very few fantasy books which are great for any level of readers to read.

.

🏯SYNOPSIS: Written in the Fanstasy Genre thus it has every element which we can imagine in our minds. This book is the first installment of the series and I would say author has built commendable anticipation about the next books from the series. The book has been weaved around the protagonist Terhese.

🏯NOVELTY: The plot has been written around the universe wherein witchcraft and Magic are banned because of certain historical events. Terhese wanted to go to the academy. But there is some relief for the people of Omneth. Terhese a young girl who hails with higher magic but will be she able to perform her magic. This book has every element of good fantasy novel which leaves this book stand out.

🏯GUESSWORK: This story has great elements of magic, mystery and intrigue plot which made this book an intrigue read.

🏯LANGUAGE: The book has been written with a great word building and enchanting narration.

🏯FINAL CALL: I loved the way book has been written with hint of magic and great way of Fanstasy. The elements in this book unravel with slow pace, which make the book an intrigue read. But due to more elements in this book I found the allignments of certain factor leaves perplexed.

Blood of the Raej is a young adult fantasy book written by Hayley Rae Johnson. The story is based on the magic rulers and the main protagonist of the story is Terhese, the secret descendant. She doesn't know about her powers or magical abilities. What will happen next? You have to read the book for that.

The cover page of the book is colorful and beautiful. The title is appropriate for the book and I actually find it an interesting read. The plot of the book is unique and a little bit different from what I perceived while reading fantasy books. The story is set in post medieval time, but there are some editing problems in the book.

The language of the book is simple and the narration done in the book is a little bit off because sometimes I faced some problems understanding the context of it. The portrayal of every character is done very well, I liked the character of Terhese because she is portrayed with such strong and fierce personal.

A little bit of proper editing would have done a great job. The ending of the book is great, it leaves you thinking what will happen next. But I'll recommend this book to all the poeple who love young adult fantasy. I'll wait for the next book. Overall, I like the book and it is a one time read for me.

Blood of Raej by Hayley Rae Johnson🌸
Set in mystical world Omneth, the story revolves around a young girl Terhese, she possesses higher magic, blood of Raej but people like her are hunted, she has to navigate the Academy, friendships, woes, threats while keeping her magic hidden.

This book has all the elements for a good fantasy novel,
Magic, Mystery, Intrigue, Unique world building.
The writing is engaging coupled with an interesting plot made this a breezy read for me.
I was lost in the world of Omneth, that's what i loved the most about this book effortless storytelling.

Terhese is adorable and sweet, she is naive and trying to fit amongst her peer, i just loved Terhese with Jensen they were great together.
I was always rooting for Jensen rather than Mark.

But the only drawback i felt was the ending it was underwhelming, i wanted more of Jensen, i wanted to know more about Terhese's origin and family, about Raej kingdom.
I have to wait for the next book for that I know, still i wanted more insight into their lives and past.
I was left wanting more.

“I believe you. It is unfortunate, though, that you couldn’t just tell me you loved me. How hard is it to get you to love someone?”

Book: Blood of the Ràej
Author: Hayley Rae Johnson
Rating: 5/5

********

This book is filled with action, adventure, life, love and more. Another fantasy world I want to be part of!

Terhese holds some magical powers which she isn't fully aware of. She then goes to the Bell academy to understand and access it better. Deep inside she worries that she's magic-less because she has never been able to pinch a pebble without making chaos. But all this worrying was for nothing!Terhese is not only magical, she holds so much power that only the late Ràej had! Now she has to move on and save the new world by hiding many things including her powers. Will she able to do this? If so, how? Grab this book ASAP to find answers to all these questions.

I'm a huge fan of fantasy books set up in schools. The world-building was flawless. The protagonist, that is Terhese's character was well developed. I loved her personality Although I would've loved it if I could see more of other characters. I loved how descriptive the author was , it gave so many visual and audio images. There were so many fresh and new elements in the story that made it even more interesting to read.

Overall, I'm well satisfied with the reading experience. I'm glad that I got to read this.

Glad to share with readers around. The story beginning is really amazing, I loved reading it through out the end. All about Queen Mellony, King Mason and Mineka in very beginning(prologue). And thereafter from chapter 1 to chapter 21 it's all full of fantasy mysteries which keeps reader connected to story and continue further reading. All experiences of Terherse, Natalie and others is presented in splendid speculatory manner. Every thrilled, and mystery lover must read this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment (I hope!) and my introduction to this world.

In a world where strong magic is feared, and banned, Terhese struggles to develop the same access to magic that almost everyone has, while desperately hiding evidence that she has the old magic, the Raej's magic.

At the same time, she faces mounting evidence that her people's history is not what she has been taught. That the evil Raej might not have been the monsters they were portrayed as being. And that her country's saviors, the Slate, might, instead, be the enemy.

A very good YA read.

I won Blood of the Raej in a Goodreads giveaway and I’m so glad I did.

I couldn’t put it down. I picked it up every free chance I had.

The Binders started a war with the Raej because they had no power and wanted the Raej’s power (magic).

Terhese was raised by her aunt assuming she had was a Slate (lacking powers). She discovers at the Academy Ball that not only did she have powers but she was a Raej.

She has to pretend she is a slate at the Academy so no one will know. Jensen, a childhood friend who knows her powers, is not there to help her.
It is discovered she has the powers and the Officials try to binder her to Mark for her powers. She doesn’t willingly bind and ends up running from the Academy.

I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I need more of Terhese and Jensen.

The Raej had been the rulers in Omneth, a Kingdom full of magical powers, and the Blood of the Raej were the strongest in these, however foreigners from across the sea known as the slates came and decimated the Raej, taking over the kingdom and forbidding natural magic from being used. Than the slates brought their own formulated magic in the form of pebbles which they distributed across all households to bring equality, but those who could pinch pebbles were sent to study in the academies across the kingdom. These could become soldiers to defend the realm, or take up important roles as officials to run the country, or take up specialised trades according to the abilites they display. Terhese was an orphan young girl, brought up by her aunt Chloe who was a slate, and she believed herself also to be without magic, however when she went to the academy and found herself under duress she displayed natural magical powers, and discovered her ancestory was that of the Raej. If this was discovered she would be killed instantly, and there were those who realised what she was and were out to hound her. Terhese is betrayed by those she thought loved her, but is also protected by others. Can she escape capture? This is a coming of age fantasy magical first book in a series, with a courageous heroine, and a magical academy where the usual bullying takes place as well as friendships are formed. I found the writing to be a bit too childish in that many unnecessary details were given, and was not keen on the cover picture, and the fact that the girls upon entering the academy focused more on flirting with the boys, I think this aspect was a bit too overblown, even for a teenage school.

Terhese Marie Neem's family died in the war, and her Aunt Chloe took her in and raised her. All she's ever wanted to do was go to the Academy and become a Pebble Maker. She wanted to be like her father and do her part to protect the realm.

Jensen Dontaine has been a friend since they were children. Now he's an Investigator Intern, with a secret.

Terhese has always had problems pinching Pebbles, and thought she might be a Slate. When she discovers she actually has the high magic of a Ràej she fears for her life. She's about to go to Academy and only has a night's worth of training on how to hide herself from the Officials.

The story goes that twenty years ago Slates came to Omneth to rescue everyone from Raej tyrants. They used magic filled Pebbles and lesser magics to defeat the high magic of the Raej. Children are trained to fear the Raej. They are trained to identify and if necessary, battle them so they may be executed for their crimes.

Terhese's first day at Academy attracts a handsome upperclassman, that can't seem to get enough of her. She also acquires a Helper, a fairy named Lenetta. This first book has a lot of world-building, most of which works, but there are a few things that hit my inconsistencies radar. While I figured things out very quickly and wasn't surprised by the stopping point, it was very abrupt and you'll need the next book to find out what happens. I think Johnson has the start of something interesting, and it is worth seeing what happens next for Terhese in Johnson's next book.

Though I want to know what happens, because the storyline is so original and interesting, I could not bring myself to finish this book. I loved the magic system with "pinching pebbles" and the idea of a school, along with the diverse range of characters who are mysterious, but do not lack for personality. Like I said, I was actually very interested in the plot itself and many of the characters.

While the ideas themselves are SO GOOD, the editing is just not there. There are some plot holes, inconsistencies, and a lot of grammatical mistakes. An example is the fact that people with natural powers cannot "pinch pebbles," but in one instance, one of those characters does, in fact, pinch a pebble to start a fire. It just needs more eyes and editing, and honestly, this would be a masterpiece.

Nooooo! I wanted this book to never end! It's so amazing. This is going to be a serious book hangover.
These characters... They are so real and their world is astounding. As for the story, it's so layered and beautiful you are immediately sucked into Terhese's life. And the ending had me almost yelling to an empty house. It's so, so good.

Terhese is what is known as a Slate, meaning that she has no special magical powers. She has always aspired to join the Academy, run by Officials and, excel as a student in order to secure a post as a trainee or intern in one of the many avenues that the Academy opens for its students.
Her aunt Chloe raised her and as many orphans of the Great War, she was found in the hands of Chloe beside her dead mother, her father having been killed by what they tell her is the Raej, a bloodthirsty race that was aniahilated for the most part at the end of the war.
Her childhood has been normal and she has great grades in school while, at the same time, helping her aunt with her tomato farm.
The author has the gift of being able to virtually take the reader on an adventure filled with magic, hidden powers, love, hate, jealousy, friendships, and, many twists and turns that will leave the reader asking the same questions as Terhese . The continuous mystery and betrayals contribute to make this book a 5 Stars rated page-turner that leaves me looking forward to reading the sequel.

I loved this book its a great read and a real page turner. I loved the characters and the world building.

The main character is Terhese an orphan girl who lives with her aunt and has ambitions but does not have the magic to fulfil her ambitions and is understandably frustrated that others around her do. Terhese has a secret her best friend's brother is her boyfriend and he insists on it being a secret. As the story unravels Terhese learns things about her boyfriend and about herself and we are introduced to a range of other interesting characters. The story is a great start to a new series and I look forward to what follows.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫 (4.5)

I was impressed with how Hayley built this world of Omenth. This first book definitely gives you a lot of knowledge regarding Raej, Pebbles and really the whole world she built.

I can’t believe this was her first published novel. She did a great job explaining everything, but also creating enough for it to be a page turner of needing to know more.

You think you can trust some of these male characters, but they switch up so quickly.
Terhese is very strong headed and figuring out her powers and how different she is.

The way this book ended definitely has been intrigued for book two!
