Tell me why I didn't like this one:(

This was a bit like the Mindf*ck series. I'm still curious about 'The Strangler'.

But I did not like this one:(

"I’m a writer.
I’ve always been captivated by stories crafted with such masterful precision until the words become worlds, and worlds become infinite threads of possibilities.
I write stories… With knives."

Chapter 2 in and this fmc is lusting over the mmc who is busy taking the life out of a r*pist/m*rderer

She stomped on my right foot, and a scream left me when she stabbed me —a scream that didn’t sound manly at all. Using my distraction, she untangled herself from me, entered her car, and sped away, leaving me staring at her car’s old ass once again.

STOP! THIS IS FUNNY!

“Oh, stop being so fucking sarcastic. You know what I meant,” Enzo said with a growl. “Do you need anything to eat?”
“Maybe that woman’s heart. Find her and roast that for me, will you?”
“Well, I’ll try.”

Okay, why is there a guy named Josh and then there's another guy named Chen, here?

Serial killers? ✅

Serial killers that are a medical examiner and a crime investigative journalist? ✅

Killer that they are BOTH trying to track down? ✅

This book had my attention right from the jump. It’s hot, sexy, fast paced, and will keep you on your toes each page.

Yara and Ryden make a perfect chaotic neutral couple and I think they balance each other out nicely, even if they do kill people (but only the criminals and people who truly deserve it).

In the end there is a slight cliffhanger ending. Nothing that has me screaming over the edge, but still leaving me wanting and speculating about what’s to come next.

Thank you to Maya for the opportunity to not only Beta read this book, but also read a copy of the ARC!

ARC REVIEW :

This deserves more than 5 stars. It has every thing I love in books..
Serial killer × serial killer who are also Medical examiner & investigative journalist, tell me a better combo than this!
This was fast paced even with long & so many chapters it felt like I always needed more and more and more.
The storyline!! The characters!! The twist!!! It's the Dad of all the twists. The twist in this book is Like the fucked up fate !!!!
Never read anything like that in my entire life. I finally found a book I'd love to memorize by heart again, the book I'd love to read over and over and over again & still wouldn't get enough of it.
This was everything I needed and more.

Yara West & Ryden Sinclair can stab me and I'd still thank them both for doing the favour<3
Also Enzo, everyone deserves a friend like him.

Reading was like Intense feeling of being watching someone actually kill while we stay silent and nervous inside the closet holding onto our breathe and life. The cliffhanger at end is killing me not because it's something major, no but because I want to read more and more about Yara & Ryden and them Figuring out who the fuck is the Strangler (even though we get to know it in this book itself) but I need Book 2 like I need oxygen.

The breath of fresh air in a book I didn’t know I NEEDED. I want to devour more of Ryden and Yara.

Honest to god, the plot *chefs kiss*, development of the characters? literal PERFECTION. I devoured this book in two days (because kidlife) and I’ve never ever been so enthralled by a psychological thriller between cereal unalivers.

Yara is a bad. Ass. I love how strong and resilient she is in this book. The “I don’t need no man” attitude paired with her cunningness and stealth are like no other!

Ryden is a giant teddy bear of a man. Can he, you know, help someone get 6 feet under with his pinky? Probably, BUT he’s obsessive, possessive, and will 100% unalive you for looking at his woman. He just makes me want my own Ryden🙈

If you like cereal unalivers, stalking, and some 👀😮‍💨 READ THIS BOOK.

Plot? 5/5🌟

Spice? 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

I was so excited to receive this arc! I mean, come on!!! CHAPTER TITLES??!!!???!!! Yes please, I love it. This was amazing. It took me a while to get into it, considering it’s slooooow. I want to DEVOUR more of Ryden and Yara. There’s a long list of trigger warnings but I didn’t read them, read them if you want but if you’re like me and you don’t care about trigger warnings just skip.

This plot??? Did not see coming! It was 🤭 The way you can picture the characters developing into themselves is PERFECT. I loved where the story was going from the beginning, yes it was slow and at times I chose to read my current physical boo rather than this but once I got into it I was HOOKED!!!!!!!!! I couldn’t put it down until I finished it! I need the next book ASAP!!!!

YARA BABE she has the kind of attitude we women should all have, the “I don’t need a man” energy. She's a badass. That’s all.

Ryden, Ryden, oh Ryden! He has the “touch her and die” energy and I love it. He’s obsessive and possessive, but who doesn’t like that in fictional men???

Definitely one of the best ser!al k!ller x ser!al K!ller dark romance I’ve read this year. This is perfect combination of The Mindfück series and Butcher and Blackbird. I was hooked to the book from the 1st chapter itself and with girl obsessed trope where she stalks him first omgggggg I absolutely fell in love with this book.
Also, can we talk about the cliffhanger like wow, for 1 sec I did had my suspicions but then I forgot about it and it was one the best plot twists in this book.
The chemistry and spice was soooo hot to read 🥵🥵
I’m so glad I applied for the ARC of this book, now I can’t wait for the 2nd book 😭😭

This is the first ARC book I’ve gotten a chance to read. It was a little slow to start. It took me a little to bond with these characters, but when I did…🥰🌶️😱

Tara was the queen of saying what she wanted!! Ryden was the bad boy we all want. I spent the whole book trying to figure out who was the serial killer. The plot kept me on edge the whole time….and then…the book ends!! WHAT?!? I need the next book like, tomorrow, please!

Not me wondering if I read a different book to everyone else and then finding out that I did??? wtf. The arc and the published versions are apparently different 🤷‍♀️the author also spammed the shit out of one scene in all the Facebook groups which irked me.

I read the published version and it was very slow and boring for me. Very repetitive. The characters made poor decisions and when it got to the spice it just didn’t hit

This is the first book of a duet and it took me some time to get into it at first. It’s sloooow.

The ending picked up and had me more engaged at about 70% through the book.

The characters talk to themselves quite a bit and was getting a bit old.

A little spice … could’ve used more 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you to the Author for giving me this ARC opportunity.

With that being said , I totally enjoyed this book! To be honest , it did start off a little slow for me but it was still entertaining nonetheless. It has dual POV’S , serial killer , and ma’am that twist ??!! I loved this book so much , I love that another reviewer mentioned it’s like a criminal minds show in your head because that’s how I would describe it too! This is a great book that can be read fast but unfortunately I do not have the luxury of reading all day since life calls 😂 but overall , this is one of my favorite reads of this year and I am soo excited for the next book because I need some more of Yara and Ryden!!

If you are wondering if you should read this book , the answer is absolutely yes but make sure to check your trigger warnings lol!!

A big congratulations to the Author Maya Raine for this great book!!!

Wow. This book is exactly what I didn’t know I needed in my life. Serial killer meets his/her match!

I typically read other genres but am always open to a good story. This was a phenomenal story! Well written, dark, intriguing, spicy, with many twists and turns.

Yara is a well respected medical examiner. Ryden is a criminal investigative journalist. Both have a backstory that weaves in and out of the entire plot. The hook grabbed me almost immediately and I found it difficult to put down. I felt intrigued by Ryden as if I was living through Yara. The heat between them was intense at times! I get bored easily, but Maya Raine kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the story. Wonderful detail!! The ending cliffhanger leaves me wanting more, more, more!

I can’t wait for the next book in the series!!

There are two reasons I love reading ARC’s;

1) you get a chance to speak with the author directly, message them while you read the book and go through the emotions with them so they can see that their hard work and effort is enjoyed by the people reading them.

2) you get to read some absolute amazing work and Mrs Maya Raine, you smashed it!

The emotional rollercoaster this book had me on was something else! I was gasping on the bus, laughing curled up on the sofa and shaking my head at surprise at the end of the book.

You think of Serial killers? You think of unhinged men…. Yara isn’t your normal vulnerable female lead character- oh no this independent well-respected woman knows exactly what she wants and is not afraid to go after it.

Let’s think Serial Killer Medical Examiner Vs Serial Killer Journalist Stalking an obsessive Serial Killer – throw in some passion, smut and dark romance 😜 😜 Perfection!

Ryden, Ryden, Ryden… “Angel in one eye. Devil in the other.” This quote got me so good and in my feels. Gentleman for his woman vs the devil incarnates for those who cross her. Enough Said!

The clever plot had me hooked from the offset, the detail and information had me believing the author has something to tell us – all that detail Maya. 👀 (you’re definitely the type of woman to fall asleep to real life murder mysteries at night)

And let’s not talk about that ending… you’ll have to find that one out for yourselves. One hint? I didn’t see it coming …

This one was a wild ride 🤭😮‍💨
It took me a couple chapters to really get into it but once I was in, I was hooked! There was no putting it back down !

This book kind of gave me butcher & blackbird vibes but definitely darker & spicier 🤭 check the trigger warnings before reading!

The plot had me sooo intrigued and I kept trying to guess who this mysterious 3rd serial unaliver is, without success tho 😅 but it’s okay ahaha

I truly can’t wait for the next one 🖤

Arc review

When Maya sent out posts on social media looking for dark romance readers who have no triggers I signed up straight away.

Unholy Bonds is not for the faint hearted- it’s dark and twisted and spicy.

This stalker/serial killer romance features our badass FMC Yara and an obsessive and possessive MMC Ryder. Straight off the bat I loved both these characters and the chemistry between them was 🔥.

This gave me big Dexter vibes and I loved how they both used their jobs as a way to help their ‘other jobs’.

The plot for this book is great and it keeps you guessing in the right ways.

I would say is the first half of the book felt a bit slow - but the second half was on point and was amazing. There’s also some odd phrasing here and there which kinda gives you Shakespearean/medieval-esq vibes but it wasn’t something that bothered me.

The ending was a good one for a part one of a duet - it’s not a massive cliffhanger - but it still left me wanting the second half asap!

If you see a long list of trigger warnings and think ‘bring it on’ this is one for you!

4.5 stars! The story follows medical examiner Yara West, who spends her nights as a serial killer seeking vengeance for those who have been wronged. On one such night, Yara meets her match in Ryden Sinclair, who makes an impulsive decision that Yara witnesses, and from that point forward, their lives quickly become intertwined. Alongside this, it becomes clear that there is another killer on the loose who is not afraid to pull them into their twisted games.

This book has a little bit of everything you didn't know you needed. It is spicy, it is dark, it is twisted and even a little romantic. I was absolutely hooked. It is written in an engaging way that will keep you turning the pages. It has multiple POV, which I always enjoy as I feel you really get to understand the characters. I thought Ryden and Yara were well developed, and I liked how their relationship came full circle.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I think book two will be a great continuation of book one, especially if it explores Ryden and Yara's vulnerabilities.

The only reason this is not 5 stars for me was that some of the spicy scenes/dialogue seemed a little off in a sense of what else was going on at the time... I don't want to say more, as this would spoil the story. But other than that, it was absolutely a fantastic read, and I'm ready for book two.

I think lots of people will be huge fans of this series.

This book has some graphic scenes, and sexual abuse is also discussed, so check the trigger warnings if this is something you may find difficult.

With thanks to the author and BookSirens for a copy of the book. This is my honest opinion, which I'm leaving voluntarily.

Serial killer romance? Heck yes. Serial killers who hunt other serial killers? Double yes. Serial killers who write about their own kills and work their own cases with law enforcement? Just take my money!

This book is steamy, twisty, and oh so delicious. I loved the take on a Dexter style serial killer with our FMC being a medical examiner and our MMC being an investigative journalist. They would have been great on their own, but add in an almost love triangle with a third killer who is OBSESSED with our FMC? Yes please.

I was engaged from the first page to the last; unraveling the stories and deceptions of each character was a treat. I do feel like the spice could have been a little faster burn, but the build up also made the moment when they finally break an absolute inferno! I look forward to the next book in this duet, especially after that final plot twist!

The fact that my review has taken me DAYS to develop because this book just completely blew my mind.. insane. When I finished this.. I had no words. I was reeeeeeling from all that had transpired throughout this book in the short 500 pages. I was attached to this story from the beginning. I loved the characters, the plot, the story, the spice, the slow burn.. just straight up perfection. HOWEVER.. Maya did us dirty with the cliffhanger. Having to wait for the second book is going to kill me, but this book is a 10/10. You will not regret reading it, but for the love of all that is holy READ TRIGGER WARNINGS. If there is something there that is not your fancy, then don't read this. Simple as that. She does not deserve any bad reviews because the writing alone was *chef's kiss*.

I will now be staring at my calendar and stalking Maya's social media for the release date of the second novel.

This is Maya’s Debut novel and the way she put cřačk in it!? I couldn’t put it down and I wanted more and more 😩 I loved Yara and Ryden’s dynamic. Yara is the bâdáss woman out to get her revenge for what others have done. RYDEN? That man didn’t disappoint on serving his own type of justice. Who doesn’t love two ķılleřs that connect in the best way? These two were absolutely everything. But like?! THE CLIFFHANGER? Are you fr with me Maya?😩 I thought you loved us.

After ârc reading this I wanted the 2nd one before the first was even released 😂🫶🏼

Will impatiently be waiting for the 2nd book

I was incredibly lucky to be able to read this as an ARC reader and my goodness what an epic start to this duet! Ryden, dark, handsome, possessive the ultimate book boyfriend. Yara fiercely independent, fiery and distant she’s an ultimate FMC! The plot and the twists and turns in this book had you holding on by the edge of your seat! The cliffhanger at the end is just perfect it’s making me incredibly impatient for book 2! And the strangler I never saw that coming! OMG! This book had me gripped from the start with the death and violence. I fell in love with Yara and Ryden straight away. It was nice to read a dark romance/smut book that actually had a gripping storyline and characters you could bind to and not just smut and no story.
Some of the details were graphic but it did not put me off. I thought I had sussed who The Strangler was but did not expect the outcome.
A great start to the series. I can't wait to see what book 2 beholds.

Yara and Ryden were the best characters! They were both so interesting and I was rooting for their relationship the entire time! I loved their banter and chemistry. Talk about all of the twists and the connection these two have! Talk about fate!!

This is by far my favorite read of this year! I have not read any serial killer romances before this, but I think I have found my new favorite sub-genre. The main characters in this book, Yara and Ryden, are two sides of the same coin. Both kill people who deserve to die, both work with the police in some manner.

Yara is a medical examiner for the police department, creating official records for the bodies that are found in the area. Ryden is a journalist, writing the stories of those who have been killed while also detailing some of his own kills.

These characters are incredibly complex, nothing living multiple lives but when they find each other they become their true selves. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH!

I had the honor of reading the ARC of this book, and it was an adventure I had not wanted to miss out on. I was pulled in with the first chapter, and the story kept me hooked until the last.

To sum up quickly: This book had romance, some darkness, sexiness, adventure, mystery, and so much more. It was all mixed together in an interesting plot. I was very invested.

Let's talk about the characters first. The chemistry between them was very fun. Their interactions were exciting and I liked the energy. On social media the writer teased with spicy quotes, which were a big reason I was lured towards this book, and let me tell you that there were indeed some very hot romantic/spicy scenes. I do have to admit that I sort of missed a big intense “it’s almost the end of the book so the characters f*ck like it’s the last thing they will ever do” moment, since it felt like the whole book was kind of leading up towards that point, but the story is not over yet so I will just wait and see what happens next on that front.

The darker elements of the story and their life stories added a thrilling edge, creating situations that kept me on the edge of my seat (and later curled up around the pillow on my bed, staring very intensely towards my eReader screen). It was clear that a lot of thought had gone into all the characters and their backstories, because everything fit together very well. Throughout the book you get little pieces of their past. You get just enough to slowly help you puzzle out all the mysteries that are going on, and I kept wanting to know more and more about all of them.

Talking about mystery, the plot is not just a pagefiller for the romance and darker elements, but is genuinely interesting and well thought out. It’s filled with twists and turns that kept me eagerly turning the pages. I only stopped reading to sleep.

Besides the main characters, the story also had some good side characters who all had their part to play. There was not really a point where I thought “Why did you add that person”, so that’s good.

My brain also liked the way this book was written. For me the pace of the story was good, and the text was not too complicated.

All with all, ‘Unholy bonds’ is a book that deserves to be given a chance by everyone. It’s dark, but not “you will be scarred forever”-dark, so while it has its dark themes I think it can still be read by a diverse group of people. Who knows, maybe you will like it too!

I for sure can’t wait until the next book!

Honestly I’m quite literally speechless with this one. It was SO SO SO good! I thought that the plot was WELL thought out and had me guessing until the very last second and then the plot twist completely threw me off again!! I am OBSESSED with the completely unhinged FMC and MMC. Their characters were so enjoyable to read and felt so real at times. I LOVED how badass, confident, and direct the FMC was! I love seeing strong female characters in romance stories. I loved the multi-POV because it really connected the whole story together. I did not enjoy the fact that it ended!! I can’t wait to read the next one!!! I NEED it NOW!

I have been promoting this book WAY before I even got selected for an ARC read and it was 1000% worth it!!! The waiting was completely worth it! I loved it so much and highly recommend it!! If I had to compare it to any other work, I would say it’s like Butcher & Blackbird but on a whole different level!! Definitely check this one out!!

The spice was delicious!!! I love that the FMC was so confident and direct with what she wanted and did shy away like I have seen in other romances. I was worried at first because the first “spice” scene between the MMC and another character was very short and underwhelming, but once it got to the MMC and FMC…OH MY G!!! It was good!

Overall, please check out this book!! This author has worked so hard to produce this amazing work and it deserves all the attention!

ARC reader

I have read many of her other works and let me tell you Maya did not disapoint!!

I knew it was going to be a wild ride just by the dedication but I was not ready for this.

Action from the 1st page and I knew Yara and I were going to get along from page 1, that woman has her priorities right 👠 and Ryden?!?! OMG. Enough said on that trust me!!

Baddies that hunt other baddies, fast paced, twisted, steamy, great story and much much more, you will not be disappointed at all!!
Can't wait for book two and see where it takes us and how it ends!

Thank you Maya for allowing me to be part of your ARC readers, it was my 1st time and I'm so happy it was with you. Can't wait to see how far you go!!!

3.5 ⭐️

"Aw, is your tender little ego bruised, Turtle Mocha?"

Unfortunately, the giant egos of both main characters, some parts of the plot not making logical sense, and writing choices lead me to rate this a 3.5 ⭐️.

Yara, a fiery red-head ME with a dangerous habit and alter-ego, meets Ryden, the hardened investigative journalist with a secret. The banter between them is spicy, and it is different to see the woman be the more obsessive person in the relationship. Ryden does have "touch her and die" tendencies, even though most of the book they're denying their feelings for each other and their egos are in a rally to see whose is the biggest.

Both of the main characters are very smart (which is mentioned), but some of their decisions are the complete opposite. The plot at least does a good job of keeping you on your toes and guessing who The Strangler is throughout the book. The cliffhanger at the end made me want to throw my Kindle across the room, but it was one hell of an ending to this first book of the duet.

Some of the writing had me gritting my teeth. "I supposed that most people in the masks of normal were only pretending to be normal." Is an example of the writing woes I ran into; just repetitive and unneeded. The characters also have internal monologuing that was getting really old by the end of the book. They were saying more in their heads than out loud.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
