i hate how this book nearly put me in a reading slump because of how plain the story was and how it was written. i was really waiting for anything that would make me feel kilig, but the way those scenes were described, hindi ko magawa. until the last bits of the story, hindi niya na-hit ung satisfaction na hinahanap ko when reading a BL.

siguro’y dahil ang generic ng main character na si sedric. hindi ako maka-connect sa kanya even though we’re both gay. he’s simply just that gay character who has a crush on someone and goal niyang mag-confess to that person bago sila mag-graduate. ayun lang. no other unique traits. no noteworthy backstories that would make me go, “ahh, kaya pala siya ganun.”

ang pinaka ayaw ko pala rito ay ung writing style. some dialogues kasi could be shortened like:

“gusto mo bang mamatay kaya tumigil ka roon sa gitna ng kalsada kanina?” -> “gusto mo bang mamatay?” in this scene kasi, andun ung panic at pagkalito dahil may gamuntik nang masagasaan, and i would expect the dialogues to be short, pero kinapos ako ng paghinga sa pagbasa niyan.

meron pang: “are you sure you really want to know what i’m going to say?” could be “do you really wanna know?”

may ilang paragraphs ding nag-e-end with a sentence na stating-the-obvious, like:

Tinawanan ko lang ito. “Do as you please,” sabi ko sa kanya. “Sino bang lalamigin kapag ginawa mo yon? Hindi naman ako.” Nakipagmatigasan ako kay Carter.

in that, the last sentence can be removed, since un na mismo ang point ng sentence eh.

saka ang malala ay ung mga terrible descriptions to scenes that needed to evoke more emotions, like ung:

“He kissed me. Mariin at matagal ang halik niya. I felt it. It was love.”

ang sama ng tingin ko roon sa “i felt it. it was love.” ang forced ng dating. unconvincing.

last na:

“Basta ako, mahal kita at alam kong mahal mo rin ako. Hindi ako titigil na kulitin ka hanggang masabi mo yon sa akin,” sabi pa nito, making this the perfect kilig moment.

the line “making this the perfect kilig moment” is awful. the story is supposed to make me feel kilig, but with that line, it’s like it’s dictating to me na nakakakilig daw un.

the final act felt rushed. actually parang ang random nga lang ng feeling ng climax nito, na parang naisip na lang bigla na, “hala, patapos na pala ang story, need ko ng something source of conflict pa.” i was expecting something more sa ending but it was resolved so quickly that it made me feel nothing.

the only thing na nagustuhan ko rito ay ung slow burn development ng pagkakagustuhan nina sedric at carter. slow burn siya in a good way kasi nag-start talaga sila na hindi nila gusto ang isa’t isa.

btw, wala pala akong napansing anything na problematic elements (romanticizing toxic behaviors, misogyny, misrepresentation) dito, which for me is a plus. sadyang ang nagpa-turn off lang sa akin dito ay ung technicalities at ung kakulangan ng emotional impact ng story.

Overall cute

The interpersonal conflicts became a little much by the end, the last one with the introduction of the second love triangle was kinda contrived.

There are so much things going on in my head while reading this. The story might be fine to some people who enjoy enemies to lovers trope, unfortunately I didn’t resonate with the writing style. Maybe it’s just a preference thing, but I honestly think that Sedric was a bit insufferable as a character haha. The narration felt a little bit odd in a way. Honestly, I was just a bit disappointed since my expectations were high before reading this.

The idea is there but there’s definitely a room for improvement when it comes to the execution.

It's a good read. I want my college life to be like that lmao. The ending was very empty like i need more. whats more to happen there's unanswered questions. But overall It's really cute

This is the second Boys' Love book na nabasa ko that happened in a university setting. What's unique about this book is, tanggap na ng bida na bakla siya at handa niyang ipaglaban sa mundo iyon. Hindi siya about gender identity versus role confusion trope which is another breath of fresh air.

Sa libro naming apat, ako, Dorshy, XPaniX, itong kay TheGoodBoySide ang pinaka realistic for me. That's what I like about it. A person who wants to make most of his time in his last year in school. Sedric was a good example of finding the courage to confess your love to someone you like.

What I wished could have been improved, though alam naman na ng author 'to at minsan ko nang sinabi sa kanya, I hope he had not had to describe almost everything in the setting. And this book also stuggled with typos na sana ay mas nasala pa.

Still, the writing style was good to the point na muntikan ko na ring maihagis itong librong 'to dahil sa isang twist sa dulo. Kuhang-kuha ni Carter 'yung inis ko dahil sa isang bagay na muntikan na niyang gawin sa bandang ending.

How TheGoodBoySide wrote it was very easy to read, in language so simple and relatable na natapos ko siya sa isang upuan.

Nakakamiss din yung ganitong era ng University love stories, and I'm excited for the next book.

I hate love triangles so much, but this book made that trope tolerable. The author did an amazing job, and I learned to like Carter and Sedric's story kahit na that ending made me question LOTS of things.

This is a good campus romance, but in the end you'll feel the pain of love, the way that it is written really conveys the emotion and the story and characters are easy to love same as the concept of love brought by the book. It's a good read.
