Books

CHANGE OF DIRECTION (a short story prequel)
Law student Luke Sackville enjoys his rugby and a change of direction seems like a dream come true. But when he runs up against a local pimp, Luke gets more than he bargained for and embarks on a new, more dangerous career.

TAKEN TO THE HILLS (book 1)
Abductions and murder are not what ex-DCI Luke Sackville expected when he left the police after tragedy struck his family.
Luke’s return to the workplace was meant to be a soft landing but when a woman vanishes after being accused of taking bribes, he is assigned a disparate team and tasked with tracking her down. He is faced with the most challenging case of his career as the murder victims mount.

BLACK MONEY (book 2)
Black NOUN - money that is made from illegal trade or criminal activity
Luke and his team are catapulted into helping MI6 thwart the activities of an international terrorist organisation. Initial suspicions centre on money laundering but when women are abducted, and bodies start to turn up, it becomes clear there is a lot more at stake.

FOG OF SILENCE (book 3)
Luke is asked to investigate celebrity parties by a whistleblower at GNE, a global news and entertainment company. Two of his Ethics Team go undercover and piece together a frightening picture of depravity and wickedness.
Little does he know that what they have uncovered is only the tip of the iceberg. A serial killer is taking advantage of the culture of secrecy and no one is safe.

really really bad language

The first short story was just fine.
The second one deteriorated into ceaseless blasphemy and buckets of the f bomb.
Couldn’t finish, didn’t want to.

What could have been a good series spoiled by an excessive use of blasphemous expletives. As always, the blasphemy is in a Christian context. I never read of Mohammad, or Krishna, or the Buddha, being dishonoured in such a way.
I also found that there were too many characters being introduced and, in the Kindle version, this is something of which it is hard to keep track.
Having served with the former Strathclyde Police Force, I also raised my eyebrows at the "relationship" between the retired DCI and the DI. I doubt that such a situation would be permitted in real life - and it wouldn't be approved by a DCC!!!
I would probably comment further but, for some reason, I appear to be unable to access the comments I made as I read! These used to be available through a link on the Goodreads page. Does anyone know why this valuable service has been withdrawn?!

Devastating and dangerous.action thriller

A three book series featuring ex DCI, Luke Sackville. Having left his police position Luke Sackville takes up a position of Head of Ethics at a prominent company. With a hot potch crew of a weird mix of 4 colleagues, he and his crew, set about an under cover sting. What they find out is both shocking and chilling.

A new kind of detective

This is a great introduction to the series. The main characters are more interesting than average as are the criminals. This is definitely one for those who secretly want to be James Bond should they ever grow up

Investigating Company Issuesu

Luke heads a team who investigate issues that clients have. Most want their problems to be kept a secret. The characters were interesting, but the ending of the three books was a let down.

Great read

All three books are very well written. The characters and places are wonderfully described. Each book is complete in itself. I really enjoyed reading all of them.

collection 1

Luke and his team get better with each adventure and having the writing superb and subject matter assists in telling the stories.

4.5 An unexpectedly good find. I fully intended spacing each of the three books in this box set between others on my TBR list, providing reading variety. This didn't happen. Instead I had a book fest and lost several hours without really trying. Each book in the series contained one major investigation for Luke Sackville and his team, with further subplots for extra interest. The characters are all well described and the storyline kept my complete attention.

I notice that some readers gave low ratings due to characters using bad language. In real life, people, especially criminal types as depicted in this series, will swear. So do I occasionally, but in the most ladylike manner:) If a book is about murderers and low life, expect 'swearing or blasphemous expletives', or maybe choose an unoffending cosy mystery.

S J Richards seems to be a prolific author, I look forward to finding other of his books to enjoy.
