This was fun, Kai Flint gives me young Gandalf vibes as he goes tries to rebuild his future after losing his wife and young son in a dragon attack. After defeating a dragon and attempting a very powerful, untested spell with his mentor, Kai finds himself in unknown lands where people with magic are in process of becoming eradicated by order of the king.
Kai is a strong and stubborn MMC, but he also still holds strong character for what is right. I appreciate that even when present on each side of the war, he still holds true to core values and what is right and keeps that consistent. He makes friends, as a loner, even though his entire goal is to get back home.
I really enjoyed the different types of magic in this story. Mememaro was able to bring forth a world with so many different dynamics, and heck we still don't even know the complexities of how the old and new worlds relate. Then you add in the void and there is another layered component of setting for this story to take place. I look forward to seeing where this story goes because as Mememaro know... I have some conspiracy theory ideas.
Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess is a captivating read; following the journeys of a powerful mage as he attempts to navigate a multitude of obstacles thrown his way. While I felt somewhat disconnected from the story in the beginning, the longer I read the harder it was to put it down!
This story is filled with incredible battles as Kai attempts to solve the strange circumstances that thrust him into the kingdom of Veriton. If you are looking for a book without a slow "filler" chapter in sight, then this is perfect for you! Conflict after conflict arises, and Kai has to use his headstrong nature to attempt to force his way through them all. This isn't to say that he can do it all on his own either, as twists and turns fill the pages and swing the momentum in a multitude of directions. Nothing can be assumed in this novel!
The abruptness of the introductory chapters did make it hard to latch on immediately to the story, and an event later in the book has still left me slightly confused as to its purpose. However, as this book is intended to be the first of an entire series, I look forward to my questions being answered in the novels to come. If you are the kind of person that enjoys a good, magically centered adventure in a fast-paced, fantasy world, then I would highly recommend this read!
Great work of art. This rollercoaster of a ride starts off with loss. A fight with a dragon. A kill. A capture. A kill. A champion. Some trials. More kills. More adventure. A cliffhanger. I was at the edge of my literal seat, turning these pages. I couldn't read it fast enough. What a great new EPIC world to get lost in.
Kai Flint has a solid plot and the pace keeps up well. However, there were a few things which could be improved upon, awkward and out of place dialogue at times, Kai being arrogant which made me not relate (he is supposed to be the hero of this story), and subtext not being present. Kai has a dead wife and child but no emotional emphasis is placed on this for the reader.
The positives are the actual action and chapters were engaging with good action scenes, and I definitely think all these aspects could be improved upon in book 2. Kai can be a multi-layered character, he has an interesting background alongside his mentor, Bronson. There is potential here.
I would like more in-depth world-building in book 2, all-in-all a solid base to improve upon.
*ARC read* My 2-star rating means it was okay, but not a book I would reread. Others may love this more than me as it was different than my typical reads and I personally had a harder time staying engaged. Definitely would suggest for younger readers who want a fantasy book with adventure.
Fantasy **No Romance**
*Mages *Dragons *Action & Adventure *Single POV
Worldbuilding: Multiple worlds are visited along the MMC's journey. The areas and locations the MMC travels are described well, but not the worlds as whole. No map is included in the book, but I don't see a map as necessary for how the storyline proceeds.
Characters: Kai Flint- The MMC who is a powerful mage. Bronson- Friend and mentor to Kai. Vuluur - Void Mage who becomes a journey partner to Kai Mizu - Mage who becomes a journey partner to Kai
Summary: The story begins with Kai losing his family to a dragon in which he tracks down to kill. After an experience with his mentor goes wrong he awakes in a new world with limitations to his magic. Shortly upon his arrival, he is captured due to being a magic wielder due to this world having a law against magic usage. His journey in Veriton takes many twists and turns as he discovers his new purpose in this world.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Strengths- *Many plot twists. *Unique Magic *Cliffhanger to draw you into the next book.
Weaknesses- *Kai's power seemed to be inconsistent to me. He is said to be very powerful however he is subdued on multiple occasions. He also has a good bit of internal dialogue of not being able to handle opponents, but outwardly plays it off. *I did not feel a connection to the characters *I feel as if Kai's family's death should have had a more emotional impact on him. More depth. *Minor formatting issues (kindle version). One or two grammar/missing word errors.
Conclusion: Overall this story would be great for older children and teens. It is an adventurous journey with lots of action and plot twists. For an adult, I feel it is lacking a bit of depth and consistency.
Age: 10+ There is fighting and death that occurs. There is no romance, alcohol, or foul language.
This book hit the ground running. I liked the fast pace, immediate action, sorrow, and danger. There might be minor spoilers in this review, but I’ll do my best not to give away too much. Also, it is just my preference to have more emotions in a story, this book concentrates more on magic, which isn’t a bad thing in fantasy. From the beginning, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the dragon, Ornacrassus. I had a problem with the way and how quickly he was killed. I felt Kai didn’t give him much of a chance and just killed him on the assumption he was guilty. Ornacrassus was an ancient, reverent creature who should have been given more consideration, and he wasn’t. I didn’t want him to die, but I understood why that was necessary. Kai’s arrogance was a bit overwhelming, and thus his grief over the loss of his son and wife seemed superficial. That part of the story went very fast. The lack of emotion and arrogance made me not like Kai at all. I had to set all that aside to get into the story. Kai’s pride in his abilities became an overshadowing stain throughout as he was pushed and pulled between worlds. Every word out of his mouth was boastful. His distasteful character was summed up when he said, “I’m on the side that’s best for me.” Having said that, it was slightly refreshing to have an MMC, I just didn’t like; he’s kind of morally grey. There were some characters I did like, such as Borris, even though he was blinded by his love for Karina. Overall, this fantasy hit all the checks for a good read in that it had a great magic system, fantastical creatures, and lots of action. The one-winged angel was an excellent character and gave the story some depth and intrigue. Kai’s behavior never changed, and I began to see a pattern in that most of the characters seemed written as if they overestimated their importance, were overbearing, boastful, and overconfident. So, Pros: great fantasy world, magic system, and lots of action. Cons: one-dimensional characters written with too much pride and superiority, and lastly, the dragon was killed. Overall, I think many fantasy readers would like this.
For those tired of the ubiquitous 'romantasy' genre, [Book Title] offers a refreshing change of pace, transporting readers on a captivating journey through a meticulously crafted world. This book, reminiscent of Tolkien's epic *Lord of the Rings* with a dash of *Doctor Who* charm, offers a captivating escape into a realm where magic is both powerful and grounded, and the hero's journey is front and center.
From the very first page, was whisked away on a whirlwind of fantasy and adventures. The author weaves a compelling narrative, offering a truly immersive experience through detailed world-building and a magic system that is both intriguing and understandable. Unlike the often overwhelming and convoluted power systems found in other fantasy novels, this book presents a simpler, more relatable approach to magic, grounding it in the fabric of the world and the characters' struggles.
The book's nod to *Doctor Who* adds a layer of whimsy and intrigue, appealing to fans of the iconic sci-fi television show. The interconnectivity of worlds, the sense of wonder, and the overall themes of exploration and discovery all echo the beloved series, creating a unique and engaging experience.
One of the most impressive aspects of the book is its ability to keep you guessing until the very last page. The twist at the end is truly unexpected, leaving a lasting impression and adding a layer of depth to the story. This unexpected reveal, coupled with the author's clever decision to leave a surprise for readers once the main plot is resolved, ensures that the book lingers in your thoughts long after you've turned the final page.
This book is a must-read for fans of fantasy who yearn for a departure from the familiar tropes. It's a captivating story that will transport you to another world, leaving you with a renewed appreciation for the genre. It's a book that will stay with you, reminding you of the power of a well-crafted story and the joy of a truly original and engaging read.
"Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess" may be a mesmerizing travel into the domain of daydream and experience. Matt Mememaro has created a enchanting story that will keep perusers on the edge of their seats from starting to conclusion.
What genuinely sets this book separated is its luxuriously created characters and immersive world-building. From the minute Kai Flint develops as a signal of trust, perusers are drawn into a world torn separated by fate, where enchantment and riddle flourish. Mememaro's striking portrayals and perplexing narrating transport perusers to Veriton, a arrive where threat hides around every corner and heroes are fashioned within the fires of difficulty.
The pacing of the story is unbelievable, keeping perusers locked in and energetic to reveal the privileged insights that lie covered up inside the pages. Mememaro's composition is both expressive and reminiscent, portray a distinctive picture of Kai's travel as he navigates through tricky scenes and goes up against impressive enemies.
Besides, the topics investigated in "Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess" resound profoundly with perusers of all ages. From the journey for vengeance to the control of companionship and recovery, this book may be a confirmation to the strength of the human soul and the persevering trust that lies within us all.
In outline, "Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess" could be a captivating make a big appearance novel that messengers the entry of a gifted modern voice in daydream writing. Mememaro's creative narrating and compelling characters will leave readers energetically anticipating the another instalment within the Kai Rock arrangement. Whether you are a fan of epic daydream undertakings or basically adore a great story, this book is beyond any doubt to charm and charm.
This is a very wild Fantasy novel about a determined mage seeking resolution after the murder of his family by a Dragon (Or at least that's what seems to be the case) only for him to be dragged into a strange otherworld entirely in which he must locate a missing princess and restoring balance to a kingdom and possibly discover his destiny in the process. This mage is the titular character Kai Flint and as you would expect we spend the entire story following this character as he navigates this world and uses his magic to sort out right from wrong and deal out justice when he sees fit. Overall this was an interesting story with quite a ballsy ending but the journey was a bit rocky for me personally. For one the start of the novel was action-packed with a cool dragon fight but then we learn that the dragon wasn't responsible for the murder of Kai's family. If not then who? Hopefully, the sequel will explain and dive further and clarify this plot point much better. Also so much happens so quickly it's confusing and difficult to absorb at times. As a reader, I wasn't sure which way was up or down. While complexity in characterizations is generally encouraged and a good thing some of the characters were too ambiguous for my tastes. That may or may not include the Wayward Princess herself. When we get to her boy, it is a surprise but somewhat pleasant one as she is a lot more complex than what meets the eye, and I appreciate that. So I would recommend this story, I would just urge readers to proceed with caution as it is a crazy ride with a bunch of weird magic and otherworldly features. But I would have liked for the story to delve a bit deeper in the human aspect of the characters
And there, nestled among them, sat a cluster of half a dozen eggs, their smooth shells glistening in the dim light.
This was such a fun YA read! While many fantasy books come with a rigid sort of sentence structure, Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess was rather colloquial and easily digestible. And, since it doesn't shy away from action, it was a breezy read. Personally, I really enjoyed being dropped right into the action – we immediately get to see Kai's proficiency with magic as he takes on a dragon in a quest for vengeance. Through his initial interactions with Bronson, his heroic personality shines, but there's also a bit of hinting at a gray moral compass. I loved watching these elements unfold as his heroic journey came to fruition. Of course, that journey takes place in the kingdom of Veriton, where Kai is forced to navigate a land where sorcery is outlawed. Here, a rich cast emerges, from Karina to Vuluu and Mizu. The story is a true high fantasy, keeping a steady pace of conflict and adventure. The novel’s blend of mystery, magic, and moral ambiguity keeps you guessing until the very end… and might even leave you mulling over a few theories, which absolutely keeps you hooked enough for future additions to the story. Overall, this was a 4.5 star read for me – bumping up to a well-deserved 5 stars since the platform doesn't allow half stars. My only gripe was really with the unpredictability of Kai's magic – after seeing him defeat an ancient dragon in the opening, there were a few moments where I wanted to shake him and demand more pizazz. Overall, I found this to be a memorable fantasy read, and it's definitely one I'll be gifting to the younger readers in my family this holiday season.
This one starts with a bang with a battle for vengeance between a mage, Kai Flint, and a very powerful dragon. It is an epic encounter that gives a really good sense of the main character. This drops a powerful mystery right out of the gate that isn’t fully answered in this book around the inciting incident. The novel never really lets up from there…as Kai finds himself in a foreign land battling a new kind of mage. Every step forward seems to result in two steps back. He soon forms up with a team of unlikely allies, none of whom really trust one another, and heads off on a quest to save a princess. I will stop there to avoid revealing too much plot…but needless to say…there is a fascinating blend of mystery, striving between immortals and their champions, betrayal and shifting alliances, and epic war.
The characters are fascinating and most are colored in shades of gray with questionable motivations. Kai makes a great and layered protagonist and I am frequently surprised by his decisions. The princess referenced in the title, Karina, is also an interesting character and I suspect she will grow in importance in future books in the series.
The author does a nice job offering different and competing magic systems that drive much of the motivation between the striving sides. The world building is done well…with the right amount of description to not slow down the flow of the story. I was left with a lot of questions at the end, which will no doubt be answered in the upcoming books. It ends on a cliff hanger but that initial mystery hangs heavy over the conclusion.
Fans of epic fantasy, particularly when it centers around magical battles, will love this one.
"Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess" is an exhilarating journey through a richly imagined world of magic, dragons, and intense battles. From the very first page, the story grabs your attention with an epic clash between powerful mages, setting the tone for an action-packed adventure.
Kai Flint, the main character, is a complex and intriguing protagonist. His quest for vengeance after a tragic loss quickly evolves into a grander mission as he teams up with a diverse group of allies. Each character is well-developed with their own motives and secrets, adding depth and unpredictability to the story.
The world-building in this book is exceptional. The different magic systems are creatively constructed and integral to the plot, driving much of the conflict and intrigue. The settings are vividly described without bogging down the narrative, making it easy to visualize the fantastical landscapes and epic battles.
What stands out most is the fast pacing of the story. There's never a dull moment as the plot twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The numerous conflicts and unexpected developments ensure that the momentum never wanes. The book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you eagerly anticipating the next installment.
Despite the intense action, the book also explores themes of loss, trust, and personal growth. Kai's journey is not just about battling external foes but also about confronting his own inner demons and learning from his experiences.
As a seasoned YA reader, I approached "Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess" with high expectations, and while it wasn’t perfect, it still delivered a satisfying adventure. The plot kicks off with a strong start—Kai’s quest for revenge against a dragon had me hooked immediately. However, the story takes an unexpected turn as we’re plunged into a kingdom where magic is outlawed. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, but the twists and turns kept me engaged enough to see where it all leads. Kai Flint, the protagonist, is a bit of a mixed bag. He’s supposed to be a powerful mage, but there are moments where his strength seems inconsistent, which can be frustrating. That said, his journey is still compelling, and the supporting characters, especially the Wayward Princess, add enough intrigue to keep the story interesting. There’s a complexity to the characters that unfolds gradually, which I appreciated. Overall, while the book has its flaws, it’s still a solid read for fans of YA fantasy. The world-building is intriguing, the action scenes are well-done, and despite some minor issues, I found myself invested in the story. The cliffhanger ending left me curious about what happens next, and I’ll likely be picking up the sequel to see where Kai’s journey goes from here.
"Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess" kicks off an epic YA fantasy series with a pretty classic setup. We meet Kai after he's lost his family to a dragon – a quest for vengeance leads to a victory, but then a magical mishap with a dragon egg sends him to a new world, Veriton, where his magic is on the fritz and, to make things trickier, magic is forbidden.
From there, it's a mission to rescue a princess, and this is where the author, Matt Mememaro, really shines in the action sequences. The magic battles, like the one described in the excerpt I saw, are definitely a highlight – they're energetic and easy to follow. If you like your fantasy with plenty of spell-casting and clear fight scenes, this book delivers that.
The plot moves quickly, and the stakes are laid out pretty clearly through the dialogue, though sometimes I found it a bit too direct, spelling things out when a little more subtlety might have been nice. The characters, like the determined princess Karina, have strong motivations that drive the story forward.
Overall, it's a solid start to a YA fantasy series. It has that hero's journey feel, a world with intriguing rules about magic, and a good dose of action. While some of the exposition felt a bit on-the-nose, the exciting magic system and fast-paced plot make it an enjoyable read, especially if you're looking for a traditional fantasy adventure.
I was impressed by how fast I was immersed in the story. Literally right away. I love these kinds of books, that don’t beat around the bush and jump straight to the point. Half of the rimes, when people refer to a book as a ‘fast pacing’, for me it comes out as middle to slow pacing. This is definitely not the case. True fast pacing fantasy book with an appealing main character and great magic system. Also, it is written in simple language, great for non-native English speakers like me. When I don’t have to stop and google every other word that no one uses in real life.
As I have said, the main character is likable and not made of cardboard which is an essential thing for me. Surrounding people are great too. Although, some of the dialogs with some of the characters seemed like they were scripted. Like I would have hard time imagining someone speaking like that and bringing all the information out of nowhere, as if they knew that they were talking specifically to explain something to the reader. But on a brighter note, I found only a few such examples.
So, all in all, I would definitely recommend this book for someone who loves great fast pacing fantasy.
“Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess,” by Matt Mememaro, is a twisty fantasy adventure. Be advised that this is book 1 of a series, and this story ends in a cliffhanger. The tale begins in tragedy as Kai Flint witnesses the murder of his wife and son by a cruel dragon. Saddled with grief, Kai goes after the beast bent on revenge. It is revealed that Kai is a mage, with powers far beyond that of most of his kind. Yet Kai encounters those who are able to overpower him at times. He is successful in defeating the murderous dragon though. Soon therafter, Kai awakens in a strange land with no conception of how he got there. He is unable to use his powers and is taken prisoner by a “void mage.” In time, Kai becomes embroiled in the troubles of Veriton, the realm of King Ridgel, who has outlawed magic, and uses void mages to strip mages of power, and imprison or kill them. He is reportedly also keeping his daughter prisoner. But then the princess is kidnapped by a group of rogue mages. I found this to be an interesting and unpredictable story. I did not always understand Kai’s reasoning, such as why he would choose to defend a ruler who had outlawed magic and had countless mages killed or imprisoned. Nevertheless, it is a fine choice for fans of fantasy and magic.
Kai Flint is a fast-paced fantasy with an intriguing storyline. We are instantly pulled into chasing a dragon for revenge. Which I really enjoyed. Kai isn’t the most likeable character in the beginning. He’s very full of himself and thirsts for revenge over the death of his family. Kai feels like no matter what obstacle he faces, he can barrel through it magic first and he’ll be able to deal with it. That being said, it did kind of seem like his magical powers were inconsistent and seemed to match the plot's need and not the rules set up for the magic. The magic system is unique, and I found that very interesting. The way the author describes the teleporting was very vivid and I could picture exactly what was happening. Throughout the story, we face themes such as loss and personal growth. This isn’t just a basic fantasy story. We get to watch as Kai’s character grows. I would have liked to see a little more romance in this type of story, but that’s just a personal preference. The first few chapters we felt thrown into the story, but this definitely smoothed out the further into the book we got. Overall, I would recommend.
This was an okay read. It ticks many of the favorite fantasy boxes: dragons, magic, battle, and travel. No romance, sorry.
I found Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess lacking in depth and consistency. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters and would have liked more showing than telling, as they say. I also wasn't emotionally invested. There was a major life event for Kai at the beginning of the book, and he seemed unaffected by it for the entire story. In my opinion, it would have been crippling and was a missed opportunity to add emotion and depth.
On the consistency side of things, I felt like Kai's abilities were all over the place. He was supposed to be extremely powerful, but it also seemed like he was easily subdued multiple times. It kind of went back and forth on who actually had power over who throughout the whole story.
The concept was interesting, and there were unique magics, but I think it could really be expanded upon.
Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess drew me in right away. The opening scene drew me in wanting more and more. There were so many twists and turns I wanted to know what was next with each chapter and page.
The main character, Kai Flint is talented and quite full of himself which gets him into a bit of trouble. It was fun to follow him on his journey of processing his loss and the lessons he gains on his journey. It’s beautiful how he tries to share this with others at the end of the book.
The other characters are a hoot and so much fun. There are many surprises with the characters and they aren’t who you think they originally are which keeps the intrigue up.
I loved how there were multiple storylines going on and how they tied together. This was done really well and it was fun to see how everything was connected.
Overall a fun book that takes you on a journey through lands, battles, and inward healing.
Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess is the second novel I've read by Matt Mememaro, the first being from the pirates series (Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle). I was curious to see how the author would adapt in a new style, to a YA audience, and they did a great job. The familiar epic and fantasy elements translated great as the Mememaro evolved to tell a story geared for a younger crowd, while still being fun and engaging to older readers like myself.
Without giving too much of the story and plot away- the story follows the title character, Kai Flint through a journey of discovery- heavy doses of magic spells and sorcery, battles, dragons, mythical beasts, and fun characters throughout. The main character has quite the personality which lends to the story and the antics that ensue, making this a fun, classic fantasy with enough personal/stylistic touches from the author to make it unique.
“Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess” is an epic fantasy adventure. Nonstop action, incredible battles, and a rich setting make this a must-read for fans of Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter.
Grandmaster Kai sets off to avenge his family but ends up in an unknown land where people with magic are being hunted and drained. Kai is a very proud, stubborn mage, which is understandable given his impressive level of magic. But he’s also grieving for his wife and child and trying to make decisions that may help revive his family and return him home. While I admired his willingness to help others and use his strength to conquer spells, I sometimes questioned his decision-making process, especially when deciding what side of the war he’s on. Since this book is part of a series, I’m sure we will learn more about Kai in future books. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and worth checking out!
Kai Flynt is a magic lover’s hero. If you favor sorcery over swords, this book is for you. Don’t worry if you enjoy the sound of clashing swords; there’s plenty of that, too. Wise-cracking Kai is thrust into an unfamiliar world after a madcap adventure and the pace never lessens. The author focuses on one primary storyline, which is perfect for a book this length, but there are several potential offshoots. The prose reads smoothly, and the world building is interwoven with the story, giving the book a comfortable feel. There is also witty dialog that lends to the main character’s appeal. The support characters are well developed, which leaves me hoping my favorites reappear in later volume. One of the story’s strongest features is that none of the characters are perfect. You will often wonder who is good and who is bad. Over, this is a solid read that kept me up later than expected. Well worth giving a try.
4.5 ⭐️ We should be able to give half stars. I really enjoyed reading about Kai Flint and knowing all the characters involved in this story. His journey is like no other, and he has so much to overcome in the story. What a fantastic read!
On the flip side of this and why it didn’t get a 5 ⭐️. It would do more justice to the story to fix the interaction between some of the characters. I was trying to play “catch up” a few times during the story because I felt like I missed something here or there. I went back several times to re-read the different passages/interactions but still felt like I missed something.
The twists and turns were awesome! 👏 This story kept you on your seat throughout the whole story. The PLOT was so THICC! 😬 I look forward to seeing more of Kai Flint! Thanks for the opportunity to explore your world! 🌍
Is a fantastic journey that kept me hooked from page one. Kai's quest for vengeance after losing his family to a dragon is both heartbreaking and empowering. The transition to Veriton, where magic is forbidden, adds a unique twist that makes this book stand out from other fantasy novels. I loved how Kai's character developed throughout the story. His determination and resilience are inspiring, and his partnership with Mizu brings a lot of heart and humor to the tale. The world-building is top-notch, with Veriton coming alive through vivid descriptions and intricate details. It's easy to get lost in this well-crafted world. However, the pacing could use some work. There were a few sections that felt a bit slow and could have been tightened up to maintain the story's momentum.
Kai Flint and the Wayward Princess is the classic dragons, mages, magic etc. It starts out with Kai's village being burned and his wife and son were killed. He goes to find the dragon responsible to get revenge, but that's not the end of it at all. He ends up on a long journey with others, and it ends on a cliff hanger. The formatting was good, thankfully. Some I've had lately are all wonky. The grammar was good too and that all pleased me. The story itself was pretty interesting but Kai kind of bugged me because he's supposed to be mega powerful, but he gets defeated a lot. I guess that was for more drama. Also, when he found his family died, it kind of felt...flat? I felt like their should have been more emotion there, and it was a bit bland overall. Some parts lagged a bit, but I'd still recommend it.
The story follows the adventures of Kai Flint who is a grandmaster wizard. It is set up in a different world (of course) and the rules of the world remain more or less consistent throughout the book. I liked the main character even though he seemed to be a bit heavy on the condescending side. He has enough redeeming characteristics, though, to keep me rooting for him. There are several twists and turns and unexpected revelations. I can often tell how much I’m enjoying a book by how little I skim, and I don’t recall skimming at all for this one. There are some times when I shook my head and thought that a twist seemed unnatural, but I can forgive those with a good story. Warning: This is a “to be continued” story. Although it comes to a decent conclusion, there are some strings left untied. All in all, an enjoyable book and not too heavy.
As usual for me, it took a couple chapters to get into this for me. It seemed to fast paced and I need just a bit more character backstory, felt like. But once Kai was accidentally removed from his home and thrust into a conflict far away, things started to pick up nicely. Kai did seem a bit cocky, and sometimes rightfully so. I'm a romance reader mostly, so high and mighty main characters oft find themselves humbled quickly.
I went into this fairly blind, as I don't read blurbs much and I did wonder what was the goal of the quest for a bit, but it crystalized around the title eventually. And there was a side quest that set up the rest of the series nicely and brought into more worldbuilding. Overall, a good start to a series! I'm eager to see how Kai rises to the role of Champion in future stories.
Let me just say omg! If I didn’t have the responsibilities of a parent I would have finished this a lot quicker!!!
Kai Flint is a Grandmaster Magician who lives a little village with his wife and daughter till tragic strikes, then it becomes his mission to bring his wife and daughter back. But how? When an experiment went wrong with his mentor, Kai got knocked from his mentor’s tower into a new town that he has never heard of. Here his mission gets entwined with another from a higher being. Will he make it through alive? Will he achieve his goal?
