A Sinister Silence by Jan Fields is an exciting romantic thriller. The pacing and tension don’t quit until the end. The characters are real, and the reader cares what happens to them.
Virginia “Ginny” Bryce is a child psychologist who tries not to get involved too much with her young, troubled patients. She’s a straightlaced academic who happens to know a lot about the wilds of Pennsylvania, thanks to her survivalist father. She also needs a break from her career and patients to finished her second book with her publisher.
Ginny escapes from the rush of life to her family’s cabin in the middle of a forest in Pennsylvania to finish her manuscript, but not before promising to see six-year-old Benji, Joseph “Mac” Macklin’s nephew to try and help Benji with his “elective mutism.” Funny thing is I’ve heard of “elective mutism.” Experienced it while substituting in my area schools.
The story takes place in those scary woods on the side of a mountain when killers open fire on Ginny’s cabin. Ginny leads Mac and Benji all over the mountainside, trying to escape from the shooters. The story is plausible and terrifying.
The romance is subtle but palpable as Ginny and Mac try to discover who is behind the attack on them once they get off the mountain. A Sinister Silence by Jan Fields is a truly great read.
