What the Gospels don't reveal about Christ's suffering, science does. The Gospels reveal only the barest essentials about the physical sufferings of Our Lord. But in this mind-opening book, Dr. Pierre Barbet relies heavily on his close analysis of the Holy Shroud of Turin to recreate every stage of the Passion with heart-rending precision and detail. The a minor classic of spirituality by a modern layman. Dr. Barbet was a devout believer who knew the spiritual value of his findings - and he encouraged priests and pastors to use "It is largely with a view to these clerics that I have wished to divulge my ideas, so that they may nourish their devotion to Jesus crucified and may bring it out in their preaching."
This classic, with its engrossing and sympathetic medical portrayal of the Passion, has ignited religious devotion in clerics and laymen for over half a century.
THE FAMED RESEARCHES OF A FRENCH PHYSICIAN AND SHROUD RESEARCHER
Pierre Barbet (1884-1961) was a French physician, and the chief surgeon at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Paris. By performing various experiments (some on corpses) and studying the Shroud of Turin, Barbet medically analyzed the Crucifixion of Jesus.
He wrote in the Preface to this 1950 book, "I have for a long time been asked... to collect together in one book the results of my anatomical experiments, of my archaeological and scriptural researches, finally of my reflections on the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ... it is largely with a view to these clerics that I have wished to divulge my ideas, so that they may nourish their devotion to Jesus crucified and may bring it out in their preaching... My anatomical experiments took place in the years 1932 and 1935... May I reassure the readers that in the book I am making no claim that I can provide a complete and definite solution to the problem of the Holy Shroud. God forbid! My aim is... to set out my views as to the actual state of the question... I shall point out what I consider to be doubtful and what I consider to be definitely admitted as true."
He observes, "Most of the [blood] clots were more or less dry at the time of the burial. How were they also able to leave their trace?... the body was bathed in a watery atmosphere, which made all the clots on the skin and in the various wounds damp once more." (Pg. 24-25) Later, he notes, "After the body had been carried naked, and had been laid... on the shroud, the latter received only the impression of the clots of blood formed on the skin of the back during the journey... It is certain that the journey was carried out with a minimum of handling, in such a way that the clots remained in their place, unmoved. If there had been more handling, or had it been less delicate, they would have been wiped away and obliterated." (Pg. 149)
He states, "where was the nail [in the wrists] driven in? I am prepared to state my conclusion immediately: in the middle of the wrist... I experimented on a forearm which had been amputated from an adult man... I drove a square nail ... into the middle of the palm... A second slight shake tore away what skin remained." (Pg. 109-111) He asks, "Could it have been anyone else than Jesus? ... this body must have been removed from its shroud at the end of quite a short time... Furthermore, would the shroud have been so piously preserved in the case of any other crucified man? But also, which crucified man was crowned with thorns... History only tells of one: That of the Gospels." (Pg. 184)
For anyone interested in the Shroud of Turin, or medical "details" of Jesus' crucifixion, this book is absolutely "MUST reading".
