Od zawsze fascynowała mnie mitologia - te wszystkie światy, bóstwa, potwory i ich symbolika. Ale mitologia nordycka ma w sobie coś szczególnego - surowość natury, potęgę żywiołów i melancholię północy. Kiedy zobaczyłam Mitologię nordycką. Bogowie, herosi, potwory i legendy kultury wikingów Fina D. Moore’a, wiedziałam, że to będzie książka dla mnie. Nie myliłam się ani trochę.
Mitologia nordycka. To wyjątkowe kompendium wiedzy o świecie dawnych Skandynawów, łączące solidne opracowanie merytoryczne z artystycznym rozmachem. To pozycja, która zachwyca zarówno formą, jak i treścią - idealna dla każdego, kto chce poznać nordyckie mity w sposób przystępny, a jednocześnie pogłębiony.
Autor prowadzi czytelnika przez pełną strukturę nordyckiego wszechświata - od mitu o stworzeniu, przez opowieści o bogach i herosach, aż po wizję ragnaröku, czyli końca i odrodzenia wszechświata. Moore nie ogranicza się jednak tylko do przytaczania legend, pokazuje również kulturowe, filozoficzne i symboliczne aspekty mitologii nordyckiej, która w ostatnich latach stała się niezwykle modna w popkulturze, ale tak naprawdę gości w niej od dawna. W efekcie powstaje spójny, bogaty obraz wierzeń, które przez wieki kształtowały wyobraźnię ludów północy i który zachowany został na tyle, by wciąż rozpalać naszą wyobraźnię.
Myślę, że na szczególną uwagę zasługuje oprawa graficzna. To wydanie można śmiało nazwać artystycznym albumem - pełnym klimatycznych ilustracji, map i motywów nawiązujących do sztuki wikingów. Każda strona cieszy oko, subtelnie wprowadzając klimat i jednocześnie nie przytłaczając treści.
Warto też docenić wspomniany już przeze mnie współczesny kontekst, jaki autor wplata w swoje rozważania - odniesienia do popkultury, literatury fantasy czy kina sprawiają, że książka zyskuje nowy wymiar. Moore pokazuje, że nordycka mitologia wciąż jest żywa i inspirująca.
Kiedy pierwszy raz sięgnęłam po Mitologię nordycką. Bogowie, herosi, potwory i legendy kultury wikingów myślałam, że to po prostu kolejny piękny album o Wikingach - harmonijne obrazki, kilka mitów, parę faktów… Tymczasem dostałam coś znacznie więcej.
Już pierwsze strony wciągają w świat, który tętni magią i tajemnicą. Moore z pasją opowiada o początku wszystkiego - o stworzeniu świata, o drzewie Yggdrasil i dziewięciu światach, które na nim spoczywają. To nie jest sucha opowieść - a autor prowadzi nas przez nordycki kosmos niczym gawędziarza, który zna każdy zakątek tej opowieści.
Podsumowując, to pozycja obowiązkowa dla wszystkich miłośników mitów, historii i kultury nordyckiej. Elegancko wydana, merytorycznie dopracowana i po prostu piękna. W mojej ocenie - 10/10, pełne uznanie zarówno za treść, jak i za formę.

I will honestly state that the most that I knew of Norse mythology and culture revolved around the fact I bought the Thor Marvel comic books in the 60’s. That actually gave me a great overview of the world of the Norse Gods and the main characters. As well, there have been Thor movies that offered another look into all the Gods that were part of this sacred realm.
Now with NORSE MYTHOLOGY (THE GODS, HEROES, MONSTERS AND LEGENDS OF VIKING CULTURE), we learn the facts about the Vikings and the Norse races. The author has done an impressive job of featuring the world of the Vikings, offering a look at their world and the reality of their place in the history books. Finn Moore mentions that there are no surviving manuscripts written by Norsemen at that time. But there are facts in the history books regarding the Norse Vikings.
It is said they were fearless warriors, who ravaged much of Europe for hundreds of years. There is much speculation along with the fact that they pillaged communities and were often ruthless and deadly, when they descended upon a specific area. In their long ships they traveled across the North Sea to the British Isles and other areas, even across the North Atlantic to Greenland, then to America. The book mentions in detail their culture and rituals, even the fact that from time to time there were human sacrifices they made obviously to the Gods. And while the book tells in detail about the lives of the Vikings, it is very heavy on their Norse mythology that we have come to understand.
This is the most fascinating aspect of the book, and all the figures that played into the mythology. There are nine realms in Norse mythology, but the one talked about often the most is Asgard which is the home of the Gods. Odin is the omnipotent master of the realm, and of course there is his son Thor and the other evil child Loki, who has always been a master of menace, tormenting Thor, trying to get on the good side of Odin.
Norse mythology is more than complex, and Moore has created a most fascinating retelling of Norse mythology and its progression, and those who were part of it. The classic illustrations in the book make for a compelling vision of the mythic Norse world, and any student of Norse culture or who followed the Thor comics, will find this endless and entertaining reading.

If you’re looking for a detailed introduction to Norse Mythology and culture that isn’t just stories, I would highly suggest this book. While it isn’t exhaustive by any means, it still gives a great overview of all the major gods, goddesses and monsters as well as the most commonly known stories. It also provides a historical context and other places in history where Norse culture played a role. I can’t recommend this book enough.

This book is similar to 'Norse Myths' that I read. Though this book provides more information on the same topics and more than the other book. The illustrations are quite striking.
