Nanomancer 1: A LitRPG SciFi Adventure

Rate this book
Caught in the crossfire between the greatest civilizations in known space, mankind struggles to keep up with the titanic armies that shape the battlefields of our Galaxy. It is only through great sacrifice and some of our greatest weapons, the Technomancers, that we remain relevant on the galactic scene.

Decades of nanite-treatments and war made one such Technomancer, Sergeant Richard Stavos, into a one-man army capable of using Techno Magic to summon bots that are able to destroy small armies or keep him protected with their near-indestructible bodies. After fighting a long, bloody war, he met the same fate as all the others he served death. The reward for his loyalty was a new lease on life, but only as every other normal human without any access to what made him special. All hope isn't lost as he retained a part of his power, what made him a Technomancer. It was the only thing keeping him sane as getting used to civilian life isn't all that easy, even less for a man like Stavos who already had a taste of that sweet power. He would happily do almost everything it took to get that power back.

Despite the Federation's great war efforts, humanity has been recalled into service when the hegemony wrestles control over Detera, a planet locked in war for centuries over the most precious and crucial resource in the known virilian. It is the one thing allowing the Federation to keep up with the Hegemony.

Reinstated at his previous rank, Sergeant Richard Stavos is given a new squad of his Layla Alexeyeva, a street-smart Brawler class, and Leo Madrigo, a support-class Ranger-Medic. They are shipped across lightyears to face the Argos yet again. Stavos has a lifetime of experience, but with his power gone, he will have to use all his smarts to keep himself and his new squad members alive.

Enjoyable.

For the readers, this is an extremely enjoyable story and a solid entry in the rather meek sci-fi LitRPG genre. You don't want to miss out on this one.

For the author: the pacing was excellent, and while I found it difficult to "love" characters, you did a fantastic job at making me hate the antagonists. The story was interesting and the world building felt unique enough to keep me enthralled. However...

The stat and skill screen popups happened too often for my personal preferences and I began to stop caring about them as much. Some of the technomancer abilities felt good and unique while others felt like standard sci-fi that you just put a name to and that felt meh. I'd rather there be less focus on the system in general and more on the bots and his supporting powers outside of a menu. The MC and supporting cast grew on me over the course of the book, but I didn't love any of them, mostly because they felt relatively 2D. Stavos and Leo were exceptions. I liked the bots personality changes and the idea that something is up with them, but the banter was meh. The end was unexpected and a swift kick, and while it was an excellent plot device for book 2, I think that unless that specific antagonist meets a nasty and satisfying end soon-ish I'm going to be highly irritated. Letting an antagonist remain for several books is a good way to anger people. People don't like to read about horrible things constantly happening and unsatisfying endings. Copy line editing really could use another pass as there were several typos of words being spelled correctly but being the wrong words. I've highlighted these and submitted them so you can fix them.

The series has potential, but I'm cautiously optimistic as I've already seen several rather annoying tropes that may be abused down the road which would turn said potential on its head.

A great sci-fi litrpg with fun characters

So I started the book thinking that the MC had no powers at all and wasn’t sure he’d get any back. Maybe others will wonder the same, or maybe I’m the only one who read the blurb that way. The MC does have abilities from the start, and quickly gains more! The progression is nicely paced while not leaving him feeling overpowered. The supporting characters are a fun mix, especially the bots!

There’s a lot going on that isn’t explained in this one, that I can’t wait to unpack in the next books! Loved the action and I definitely thought the various alien races were well done. For military fiction fans or just sci fi in general this is a definite recommendation!

Story behind the story!

Not quite what I was expecting, but great build up to a huge ending. Wonderfully annoying cliffhanger that seems to change the tone of next book.

If you like stories that have depth, and keep you wondering “what is this poor guy getting into”, you’ll love this.

A bloody good read (pun intended)!

It is such a satisfying feeling when you discover a new gripping storyline and this book sits up there with my top 20 reads easily. It boasts excellent characters, plot, and writing style. My first Sci-Fi LitRPG, and it was definitely worth the read. Can't wait for the next book and for Winter's end.

Almost had me

I thought great here is someone trying military litrpg scifi I will give it a go. Was good book and figured i would favorite author to know when sequel came out. Then the ending where a very perimeter character becomes major and it is no longer military sci fi made me unfavorite author and hope someone else can try military scifi litrpg.

awesome book

I have never seen such a good blend of sci fi and litrpg ever and I was really impressed how this book was written, my only qualm is there isn’t a series.

A very different LitRPG title. This one is sci Fi and almost mech based. Sorry and characters are interesting. Recommend to anyone looking for something different
