I received a free copy of, A Risky Game (The Liars Society #2), by Alyson Gerber, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Cousins Jack and Weatherby have been selected to join the last heirs, a very powerful secret society. You don't know who to trust in this book, this was a really good read.

“We are who we say we are.”

giphy-2024-12-26-T134509

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The stakes are more dangerous than ever for cousins Weatherby and Jack Hunt, as they and their fellow members of the Liar Society continue to solve the many puzzles and intricate tricks laid forth for them that serve as just few of the many hurdles they have to overcome to become part of Last Heir, a secret society of liars. 🗝️ But something deeper lies in wait for them, a sinister family secret of buried truths that may very well change the very meaning of the family motto that Jack and Weatherby have sworn to uphold, proving that they may be the very ones to challenge the very fabric of the family name.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The writing was engaging, as always. 🌟👍🏻 It is shocking to see how parents let their twelve-year-olds participate so easily in dangerous risks, but hey, it's all part of the charm, right? I liked that it wasn't just solving clues; there's also another mystery slowly unfolding between Jack and Weatherby that hints of A Risky Game that could potentially change everything they've been told to believe. The clever anagrams, the unique settings, as well as the subtle challenges the two, along with Pres and Iris faced were nicely balanced throughout. I liked that it's not only a one-sided mystery, but also one that's giving weight to each of the character's hormonal emotions. 😊

“My heart is racing too, which is weird, and I hate it.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Haha, I mean, we do get to see the little flutters of feelings, or rather, flip-flopping in this case, that spark up when Weatherby feels differently for a cute boy, or Jack wonders why he lingers longer with Iris' affection. It's nice to see, okay? 🥰 Especially, when each of them is 'competing against each other to get into the most powerful, influential, life- changing secret society in the world', there's still a strong sense of camaraderie and concern that shines at certain moments that I enjoyed. .

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The familial dynamic between Jack and Weatherby was also refreshing; how they both value the gift they've been given, but understanding the risks of what they're up against. The author placed the cousins in plenty of precarious situations, and I liked how the fear felt real of losing the other. Even though they're recently reunited as family, there's a lovely undercurrent of love and consideration between the two that I liked. 🥺 And when they see how the threat is even more dangerous than they thought, it was nice to see Jack try to break free of the Hunt family name and be even more protective of Weatherby, while also struggling with the sudden truths about his own family. Hoping to break free of the chains that have held up their family legacy, by being better and smarter than the generations gone forth. 🤝🏻

“And we have to be willing to put truth before trust and truth before tradition. Truth before everything.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ For the unexpected revelations that lie deeper than he could have ever imagined is definitely is the crux of the story, and one which is what has them desperate to find the answers they're searching for. It was surprising and intense, and also a conflict that had Jack question all that he's been taught uptil now, and has Weatherby wondering what exactly is her part in this all. 😟 It's a delicate web of deceit and betrayal that is steadily taking root, that makes me curious to see how they'll be able to confront those responsible for crimes that may very well be out of their hands. There were some heartwarming moments - although, once again, I wonder how parents are okay with this?? - that showed just how strong their resolve was in finding out the truth, once and for all. And when they do, I'll definitely be along for the ride. 🤜🏻🧩🤛🏻

→ A Risky game

→ Alyson Gerber

・゜✧ 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞:
→ Fictional mystery thriller

・゜✧ 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠:
→ ★★★★☆

・゜✧ 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
→ This book was pretty good. I really enjoyed it maybe even more than the first one. I loved to see how the characters developed a little better in this book after the ending in the first. What I mean by develop better is that they became more confident then in the first book where they were mostly either "rivals" or they we're friends but worried bout something. I really loved the plot twists in this book and the suspense that the ending left!!!

・゜✧ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
→ Weatherby: FMC, not a bad one either! I definitely loved how her personality changed to better from the first book. In the first one she was always saying that she didn't belong in this 'rich' school and was always trying 'extra' hard to prove herself. Now in this book, she was confident that she belonged (also cause of her discovery about her dad's side) she was one of them and cared less about what people thought. I loved her relationship with Jack (cousins). It was a very sweet and caring one where both characters always took care of the other and made sure they were okay no matter what. :)

→ Jack: MMC, another good character who just wants out of his corrupted family. Weatherby is the only family member who he fully trusts as they find clues to a family secret that their family hid from everyone, even the Last Heir (this secret group of powerful people that their trying to get into). He also does have a good character change, going from the boy who only wanted to make his father proud and was a bit too 'proud' of who his family is, to finding a truth and now is independent and ready to make his own name =)

→ Others:
The liars society, consists of Iris, Harper, and Prescott (plus ofc Weatherby and Jack): nice characters, they were good friends, always supporting each other.

I definitely liked that there was a bit of blushing between Jack and Iris, and Weatherby and Prescott <3

(YES THIS MIGHT NOT MEAN ANYTHING AND IT DEFINITELY ISNT SIGNIFICANT IN THE BOOK BUT THIS IS HOW I AM!!!! I CATCH THE MOSY SMALLEST GESTURES OF A COULD BE ROMANCE AND KEEP IT LOCKED AND READY, HOPING FOR MOREEE) 🙃🙃🙃

The much-anticipated MG sequel to the smash hit mystery series @the_liars_society by @alysongerber
🧩
Weatherby and Jack learned they were cousins in #book 1 and now they’ve got each other’s backs both in their quest for The Last Heir and The Liar’s Society, but when someone decides to target Weatherby, all bets are off. With her life in danger one would think Weatherby would back off from trying to join the secret society, but she’s all in. With the help of her friends and Jack, Weatherby pushes herself at each challenge because the goal for her isn’t just the society—it’s being able to meet her father for the first time. Can Weatherby trust those around her and can Jack protect his new cousin?
🧩
Oh she did it again, y’all! Alyson absolutely CRUSHED this sequel! I don’t know how she thinks of all the anagrams, twists and turns, but I was invested every page of this thriller novel perfect for fans of Inheritance Games and Truly Devious. The first book is on our book battle list this year and I can’t wait for students to read this follow up releasing April 1 (no foolin’!) by @scholastic 5 ⭐️

CW: death (recounted), poison, hospitalization, parental abandonment, emotional abuse

Good book! Wish there had been a subplot or a different mystery to shake things up and keep it moving. Really just felt like getting from point A to point B. :)

Okay, there's so much I was expecting, especially compared to the first book. I was utterly surprised and very much intrigued the entire time! I hope there's a third book because how in the world could you leave the cliffhanger???

What I liked -

✨ The suspense. Y'all, it was crazy. There were so many times I gasped because I wondered if someone was about to die. Literally, it was so insane with all the close calls!

✨ The friendships. I feel like in this second book, the friendships developed a lot more, and I loved that. I love how Jack isn't such a jerk anymore and seeing the care he has for Weatherby. Also, I hope I'm not the only one who wants something between Weatherby and Pres. xD

✨ Charles Hunt. He gave me the creeps, and that's why I like his character haha. There's something about his vibe that reminds me of Hawk Moth from Miraculous Ladybug.

What I didn't like -

✨ Considering how intense the story was, at some points, the writing felt too middle-grade. I understand it's a middle-grade, obviously, but it ruined the moment at some points.

Would recommend to anyone who...

✨ Enjoys middle-grade
✨ Looking for a mystery
✨ Wants a book that they can't book put down (because I certainly had trouble doing so xD)

Alyson Gerber's new novel, "A Risky Game", is just as exciting as last year's hit middle grade mystery, "The Liars Society". The sequel is full of intrigue and puzzles that will keep kids turning pages. Weatherby and Jack are determined to pass all the gambits to earn the right to join the secret society "The Last Heirs". The Society offers power and prestige to members. But for Jack and Weatherby it offers so much more. they have uncovered family secrets and hope that membership may provide the answers. But someone doesn't want Weatherby to succeed, and she finds that her life may be in danger if she continues! Gerber has spun a fast-paced thriller for kids and this is one adult who can't wait to read the next installment in this series.

Finished book two in a day and am already anxiously awaiting book three! Between all the games and puzzles and nonstop action, I didn't want to put the book down. The Liars Society: A Risky Game is perfect for class reads, reluctant readers, and fans of books that explore wealth and privilege and outsiders (Gilmore Girls, anyone?)! Don't miss it!

A Risky Game tightens the danger and emotion of the series in a way that feels immediate and engaging. Weatherby and Jack step into Last Heir expecting challenge, but the first gambit goes wrong and the story shifts into a fast, tense mystery. The island setting, the secret society’s reach, and the pressure on both kids make every chapter feel urgent without losing the heart that makes the series work.

The emotional stakes land just as strongly as the plot. Weatherby is still trying to prove she belongs, and Jack is still wrestling with the weight of his family’s legacy. Their friendship is tested, their trust is shaken, and the twists come quickly, but the tone stays solidly middle grade with suspense rather than fear.

🌸 ωσω. Just ωσω. I don't know if I liked the first book or this one better!!! I did not see the plot twist coming at the end! Let's jump right into it! Parents need to know at the bottom of review. All spoilers should be covered!

🌸𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔:🌸

🗝️𝕎𝕖𝕒𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕓𝕪🗝️: "Whatever our dads are hiding-whatever our family is hiding from Last Heir- Getting ready to deliver the hardest line "-it must be the secret to end to all secrets." 🗣🔥. Anyway, I like how in this book, Weatherby knows that she belongs at Boston, she knows that her father left behind a legacy.

⛵𝕁𝕒𝕔𝕜⛵:"You are who you say you are...Only not. You are who they say you are. I want to be who I say I am. I want to be someone I'm proud of all the time." ωσω. Talk about character development. I loved seeing the care Jack has for Weatherby (), and I was there for every shared glance, and of course, code.

💅𝕋𝕖𝕕𝕕𝕚𝕖💅:"I mean, duh, obviously. My BFF is better than your BFF." I still think that Teddie is sweet and genuine, and I love her quirky personality.

🌹𝕀𝕣𝕚𝕤🌹: "My mom doesn't believe in friends. She always says, Trust no one. It's like her personal slogan. But she's wrong-we're in this together." Iris was still a pretty good character in this book, although she did unfortunately get a bit annoying on a few parts. My sister got mad at her for mouthing off her parents, but I think her parents deserved it to be honest.

🧩ℙ𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕔𝕠𝕥𝕥🧩: "Now you know just how far I'd go for you-for all of you." I really liked how much nicer Pres was in this book. In book one he wasn't really nice until he helped Weatherby on the zip lines, but he was good to everyone in this book. My only complaint is that we didn't get to see much character development with him, he just sort of changed out of nowhere.

🐚ℍ𝕒𝕣𝕡𝕖𝕣🐚:"I get that I'm jealous. Obviously. I mean, of course I am. It's not just that you have money. You have power and status too. You're important in a way most of us will never be. How is that not enough for you? Why do you need to be in a secret society?" 𝓓𝓾𝓬𝓴𝓼 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓱𝓲𝓭𝓮𝓼. Okay, so if you can't tell, I do not like Harper. She was respectable in book one, but in this one she thinks Weatherby wants everything just because she wants her dad. Like, Weatherby didn't ask for any of this. In fact, the only she did ask for, was her dad. Harper, what if they didn't help your dad? Then you'd know how Weatherby feels. Harper's an okay character.

😡ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕣𝕝𝕖𝕤 ℍ𝕖𝕟𝕣𝕪 ℍ𝕦𝕟𝕥😡:"Dad is the shark in the water." Somehow, I was able to resent him even more in this book. Easily my least favorite. Like he really didn't care if they all got traumatized when Iris .

❗Parents need to know❗

🤬Language🤬: God's name is taken in vain twice.

⛔Sexual content⛔: Weatherby's parents were never married.

⚠️LGBTQ+ content⚠️: None specified.

🤕Violence🤕: Bloodless, and the action is more suspenseful rather than graphic.

𖣯Diversity𖣯: Weatherby and Jack are White, Iris is asian-Jewish

🙏Christian beliefs🙏: None.

🤲Other belief systems🤲: None.

Other: Crushes developed more in this book but it's all very minor and appropraite.

📖Overall📖:
Ages 9-10+ should be able to enjoy this middle grade novel.

Jesus loves you!

After the life changing reveal at the end of The Liars Society, prep school students Jack Hunt and Weatherby Walker don’t even have time to catch their breath before they get a message from Last Heir, the most powerful secret society in the world. The pair, along with other classmates, have to complete timed gambits, some difficult and even dangerous, to stay in the game. Except, it’s not only the newly formed Liars Society (Jack, Weatherby, Prescott, Harper, and Iris) competing, and they have to find a balance between banding together—“no secrets among friends”—and doing all that they can to win the gambits and get into the society. Weatherby especially is conflicted, as she has to compete against her best friend Teddie, who isn’t part of the Liars Society, but has been tapped by Last Heir as well, just like everyone in her family. However, it soon becomes apparent that not only is admittance into Last Heir at stake, but so are lives, and Teddie is no longer Weatherby’s biggest concern. Meanwhile, as Jack finds out more about his family’s past, he’s trusting them less than ever, and doesn’t know how to proceed. Can Weatherby, Jack, and the rest of the group make it into Last Heir—or even make it out alive?
Notes:
* There is a cousin relationship featured prominently in this book, which I always love, especially as it’s not very common in literature.
* I think I mentioned this in my review of the first book, but I like the cast of characters. Do I like every character? No. Do I like or at least sympathize with all of the characters that I’m supposed to? Yes, I do, and to me that’s what having a good cast of characters means.
* I love dual POV.
* Not saying that I’m not glad that this book focuses on the mystery, but it is nice to see more of Jack’s feelings for Iris, and even Weatherby maybe starting to like someone (I THOUGHT MAYBE SHE LIKED HIM WHEN I FIRST READ BOOK ONE BUT I REREAD IT AND I WAS LIKE “NO MAYBE NOT” BUT LOOK. I KNEW IT. ok that’s my rant I’m done now lol)
* This book shows plot twists done right!
* I like that we see more of and find out more about Teddie in this book, as I felt like her character could’ve been explored more in book 1.
* I had trouble keeping track of who was tapped for Last Heir. There were three or four characters who weren’t in book one competing in the gambits, and I had so much difficulty remembering who they all were. They also could’ve been fleshed out a bit more.
* The clues and puzzles and family secrets are all so well done.
* The cover!! I love it sm
* The audiobook is actually quite well done. Nora Hunter is one of my favorite audiobook narrators, and Pete Cross isn’t bad either. The voice he does for some characters (particularly Teddie and Pres) got on my nerves sometimes, but not too bad.
* The title hits different after reading The Inheritance Games lollllll
* This is middle grade but often reads like YA, which I appreciate. Like, it’s fine for 10 year olds if they’re into mysteries (I mean there were murder attempts but other than that lol), but teenagers and up would like it as well I think.
* This book is great for Inheritance Games fans who don’t mind reading middle grade.
Thanks so much for reading!

Weatherby, Jack, and their close group of friends have finally arrived at the moment they’ve dreamed about. The contest to get into the secret society at the Boston School called The Last Heir has officially begun (the real one this time). Jack feels like he needs to get in to maintain the family expectations, even as he increasingly feels ashamed of what his family has done. In fact, the only family he really likes is his newly discovered cousin Weatherby. Weatherby is desperate to get into Last Heir because it is her only hope to meet the father she’s never met, and who can’t see her otherwise. But as the Last Heir puzzles start coming, it is obvious someone doesn’t just want Weatherby kept out of Last Heir, they want her dead. As the 7th grade heads off to the island camp of their dreams and the final round of Last Heir arrives, Weatherby can’t help but wonder if she will make it off of the island alive.

This is a high octane series of puzzles and challenges with deadly consequences. Gerber keeps the pace up. Family secrets are getting unraveled, and friendships among Jack and Weatherby’s group are tested as the contest goes on. I like the equal development of scavenger hunt and character development. There are certain things revealed in this book, and more to be unraveled in the future. This is a super engaging series that quickly sucks you into each book. This volume was very hard to put down, and I’m sure students will feel the same way as soon as it hits the shelves. Can’t wait for the next book!

Notes on content:
Language: None that I remember
Sexual content: There are some little m/f crushes developing but nothing super gushy.
Violence: There are a couple attempted murders, but none are super bloody or anything.
Ethnic diversity: Several of the characters are white Americans, but the school includes a diverse body of students from multiple ethnic backgrounds.
LGBTQ+ content: None specified
Other: Dysfunctional family, social/class prejudice

The final gambits for entry into a private school’s exclusive and very secret club called The Last Heir are afoot and once again, cousins Jack and Weatherby are in the midst of not only those tasks and puzzles but also continuing their investigation into the criminal activities of the powerful Hunt family. With the identity of Weatherby’s father revealed, she and her mother have relocated to a house on the Hunt property and while they are now in closer in proximity, seeing each other to further their search for clues and solutions to all the anagrams left by various Hunts has been curtailed by Jack’s father. Worse yet, the very first game put forth by the Last Heir membership council seems designed to hurt, maybe even kill, Weatherby!

Gerber’s second installment in The Liar’s Society is just as exciting and puzzle-filled as the first. Some elements of Jack and Weatherby’s fact-finding mission are solved, the group of friends within those up for Last Heir membership (Jack, Weatherby, Harper, Iris, Prescott) have their bonds tested, and the person set on removing Weatherby from the picture seems to be revealed, but some revelations only raise more questions and the basic question of what life-altering secret has the Hunt family been hiding for generations is still unanswered. Readers will finish book 2 anxious for the 3rd volume in this terrific middle grade series.

Text is free of profanity and sexual content and while there is some violence, it is bloodless and more suspenseful than physical. Students at the Boston private school are predominantly wealthy but there are a few scholarship students, and while there is racial diversity among them, the focus in the book does not hinge on this fact and is seldom noted. Highly recommended series for grades 4-7.

Thanks for the eARC, Edelweiss.

Ok this book was too too cute, I didn’t read the first book in this series, but it didn’t matter, I was hooked and adored it!🩵
A Risky Game by Alyson Gerber, book 2 of The Liars Society series. This is YA, but genuinely can be enjoyed by all ages, it’s probably aimed for middle school, but I think could appeal to both older and younger.
This is a dual POV of Weatherby (I love this name) and her cousin Jack. They are part of an elite family and attend a prestigious private, Boston School. It sounds like they live a wonderful and privileged life, but Jack’s father is a terrible person and throws his reputation and status around to do whatever he wants. Weatherby has only recently even found this part of her family and she’s hoping that if all goes well, she will be able to meet her dad!
As the two begin the very real and very scary game in order to join The Last Heir, a powerful secret society, the game feels more like a threat and the stakes are too high to quit.
I hope you get a chance to check out A Risky Game and really both of the Liars Society books.

When a book ends, and your insides scream, "No!" then it was a good book. Not a true cliffhanger ending, but there is definitely more to the story and more secrets to be revealed. The chacters read high school, though all references are to them being in middle school. The author doesn't refer to their grades but instead uses the term form. This would be a great book for students who love a YA mystery, but still need the content of a middle grade read.

4 stars for another fun mystery middle grade. The Liars Society: A Risky Game is action packed, full of puzzles, a secret society, and characters you can cheer for.

E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

After finding out a number of secrets about her lineage, Weather by is determined to get into the exclusive Last Heir Society, along with her cousin Jack. The two are determined to work together even though their parents aren't pleased that they are friends. Jack's father is rather evil, and Weatherby's mother doesn't seem too eager to put her daughter in contact with his brother, who is her father. Weather by and Jack have a good group of friends (the Liar's Society) that includes Iris, Prescott, and Harper, whose father was sickened by the chemicals in the last book. The school puts together another trip to Hart Isle, which has presumably been cleaned up, but it still ends badly, with Jack being poisoned by something put into Weatherby's water bottle. She's gotten a number of threatening notes telling her not to try to get into the Last Heir Society, but she wants to be a part of this group so badly that she ignores the danger. There are a large number of clues that propel Weatherby and her friends to different clues, and they find out information about Grier Bishop, who was killed by poison. DId Weather by and Jack's fathers have anything to do with this? When Weatherby's father shows up, even though her mother has tried to make sure she doesn't meet him, she has a chance to ask. There are still a lot of questions, and Weather by is preparing to go to Switzerland on an exchange program where she can also use a key she has found to open a safe deposit box there. Will she get her wish to join the Last Heir Society, and can even that keep her safe?
Strengths: There is something appealing about the rarified atmosphere of a private institution like the Boston School, especially in places like the suburban midwest, where this seems as far fetched as British Manor houses. Weatherby and Jack are now working together, and it's interesting to see them navigating family issues together from their disparate perspectives. The anagrams and puzzles are very clever, and lead to all sorts of interesting secrets and hidden places. Weatherby's mother's reactions to their change of fortune seem very realistic, and it was good that Weatherby got to meet her father. Hart Isle sounds fantastic; I'd love to take a vacation there and stay at Wigglesworth House even if I have to zip line there. Readers who want thought provoking action and adventure and secretly want to attend a prestigious private school will want the third book in the series immediately, even though I haven't yet seen a title.
Weaknesses: I had some trouble getting into this one, but then I really don't like clues and puzzles. I needed more information on why Weatherby was so intent on getting into the Last Heir Society. It didn't seem important enough for someone to want to kill her. Everyone else seems to really like this one, so I must not have been in the mood for this one.
What I Really Think:This is a good choice for readers who liked the first book, or who like clues and puzzles similar to those in Grabenstein's Mr. Lemoncello's Library or Durst's Spy Ring, Currie's The Mystery of the Locked Rooms.

A Risky Game is a worthy sequel to The Liars Society. 4 1/2*

As in the first novel, the reader again experiences the events through the alternating perspectives of Jack and Weatherby. The book does not pick up exactly where we left our characters in the first book, but instead we join them after some changes have taken place in the living situation for Weatherby and her mother. In the novel, Weatherby, Jack, and crew finally get to spend time on the island where they find out their lifelong-assigned hall (sadly without any Sorting Hat kind of situation) and play the The King's Game.

Like the first book in the series, the author deftly describes the landscapes, buildings, and bunkers in such a way that they are easy to visualize while making us want to perhaps pay a visit to Hart Isle if only we were deemed to be worthy. The anagrams, challenges, and surprises continue throughout the book. I appreciate the development of not only the two main characters but also that of their friends and family members. I have also developed a bit of knowledge about sailing from the series since I previously knew next to nothing about it.

The novel ends without everything being resolved and on a bit of a cliffhanger. We can guess where a third book would likely begin, and I am looking forward to the next installment of the series.

Sometimes readers can jump into a series at any point, but for this one I definitely suggest beginning with The Liars Society before starting A Risky Game to understand the characters, their backstories, and the premise of the gambits in general. I would suggest this to teachers as a class read aloud as early as third or fourth grade but even through fifth or sixth if you are lucky enough to be able to read to students at that age. Independent readers in upper elementary and middle school would likely enjoy the book (although it obviously can appeal to adults as well!).

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I found "The Liars Society" by Alyson Gerber at our school's book fair. I was intrigued, so I grabbed a copy from the library. It was amazing! "The Liars Society" is the story of a girl named Weatherby who, through a series of interesting events, finds herself entering the world of an elite private school. The book also tells the story of Jack, the youngest son of the Hunt family, a prestigious family who puts loyalty to family above all else. There are many secrets at the Boston School and, soon, Weatherby and Jack find their paths crossing as they are both tapped for a secret society.

"A Risky Game" picks up after the events of "The Liars Society." It appears that not all f the secrets were revealed and someone is willing to go to extreme lengths to make sure those skeletons stay buried.

Weatherby and Jack, along with several of their friends, are chosen to compete for spots in an elite secret society know as Last Heir. They must complete several challenging tasks, each one more difficult than the previous ones. And, along with the challenges, is the threat of an unknown enemy that doesn't want Weatherby to succeed...because of a dark secret from the past.

I'm a big Star Wars fan and love "The Empire Strikes Back." It is the perfect sequel and sets up the next story in an incredible fasion. "A Risky Game" does exactly the same thing. The tension is incredible, but never overpowering. Mrs. Gerber makes you truly care for the characters. There's even a moment or two where you feel sympathy for the villain...but only for a moment.

As an elementary school teacher, I would happily recommend "A Risky Game" to fourth and fifth grade students. It might be a bit advanced for third grade, but students ready for a challenge will certainly enjoy it.

Thank you, Alyson Gerber, for this amazing book!
