Oh my God??? This was so good if you love paranormal reads! Follows twin sisters after one of them dies she refuses to not be in control of Chelsea's life, when she finds out that Chelsea has made a new close friend and tries to move on with her life strange things start to happen. I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was a short fast paced read, however I did find the ending a bit abrupt and random. This was my first reading experience with this author I can't wait to discover the rest -- I came across this one randomly on libby and the mood reader in me had to pick it up!

Well that was terrifying… KR Alexander somehow manages to come up with unique, modern, and genuinely creepy stories written for a middle grade audience. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s got some serious talent. Aside from the ending being a bit unorganized, this was a well written, utterly scary, 5 star book. Highly recommend if you’re up for getting spooked!

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

Media Type: Audiobook

Dates Read: 5/31/25 - 5/31/25
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Narrator(s): Rachel Jacobs

The Story:

Horror is not usually my thing, in fact, I thought this was going to be more thriller than horror but something on the book fair poster made me want to pick it up. I was surprised to enjoy it as much as I did. and I was really upset that there was a cliffhanger and no info on the next book.

Chelsea has struggled to make friends ever since her twin sister Angelica died five years ago. Now, starting middle school, she is apprehensive, even though she's not going alone. Angelica still appears to her, a fact which turned their mutual friend Riley against Chelsea. Sure enough, on the way into school on the very first day, Riley pushes Chelsea and puts gum in her hair. Angelica is angry, but can't do anything. Crying in the restroom, Chelsea is befriended by new student Janette, who helps her and is really understanding. Seeing her sister with someone new angers Angelica, who tries to dismiss the new girl and get her sister to walk away. In alternating chapters, in excellent creepy font, we get to see Angelica's increasingly unhinged thoughts. Chelsea learns that, as much as she likes Janette and enjoys hanging out with her, she can't talk to her sister about it. When Angelica accuses her of forgetting her, Chelsea replies that she's not forgetting, she's just trying to live her life... which is exactly what Angelica can't do. Instead, the dead twin is trapped in a creepy version of the world replete with insects, and can't even venture very far from her sister without screaming in pain, collapsing, and finding herself back at her side. As tensions between the two increase and Angelica increasingly stretches their bonds, Angelica finds herself becoming more corporeal. She intensifies the rift between Chelsea and Riley, and tries to get her twin blamed for a variety of things, from nasty notes to stalking people. When Janette and Chelsea plan a sleepover when Chelsea's parents go out, they are surprised to see a very frightened Riley show up at the door. There had been a frightening episode at school, and Riley finally believes her old friend. Of course, that's when Angelica chooses to show up and tell the girls that they are all going to die. An epic battle ensues, with girls being pulled into Underside as Angelica unleashes her wrath. Eventually, Angelica is trapped there permanently, but as with so many Alexander novels, the question remains... is she?
Strengths: The creepy font will be a BIG hit, and it's not cursive, so my students will be able to read it. I think the difference between adult horror and middle grade horror is that adult horror is more unhinged... and that's what draws kids to Alexander. Oh, your grandmother collects clown dolls? WHAT IF THEY COME TO LIFE? That video game that is rumored to suck kids into it? COME PLAY IT. Sometimes the flavor of unhinged is better than others (Escape, Darkroom), and this is certainly one of those times. Bonus points for the super creepy cover! Really, I think R.L. Stine should watch his back, because Alexander's work is the closet thing I have seen to Fear Street.
Weaknesses: The ending was a little abrupt, but in an eerie, twisty way that probably would have given me nightmares when I was twelve. As an adult, I wanted some kind of closure, and the release of Angelica's spirit, but then that's not really very scary, is it.
What I really think: Just purchase three prebinds copies of this and be done with it. In the summer, the Alexander titles don't fit on the shelves because they are always checked out during the school year. This will be a big hit with fans of Dawson's Mine, Ford's The Lonely Ghost, and Preston's Twin.

Have to take a star off for the ending. Just didn't do it for me.

Conclusie
Misschien ben ik bevooroordeeld? I don’t know! Maar ik hou van alles wat K.R. Alexander schrijft.

Chelsea is the only one who sees her dead twin Angelica. Others shun her as being 'strange'. But when a new girl enters her middle school, Angelica is furious. Only she can be friends with Chelsea, no one else. Then Angelica learns that maybe she can finally get attention from others but at a horrible cost.

What worked: Chilling horror where a dead twin's possessiveness turns into something much more sinister. This story is perfect for middle school and upper elementary school readers. There's paranormal horror with some creepy twists.

Chelsea shares that she sees her dead twin with her former friend Riley. After that Chelsea is called the 'weird' girl. Riley is now her nemesis. Chelsea's experiences at the middle school are very realistic with the mean girls and all the drama.

Janette is the new girl and the only one who stands up to the bullies. Her courage gives Chelsea some strength to face Riley and to take a chance on having a friend.

The book alternates between Chelsea and Angelica. Little by little Angelica's possessiveness and jealousy of her twin grows to the point that she develops a way to grow stronger. She's no longer a stereotypical ghost but one that can wreak havoc.

Fast-paced, with some sinister scenes. The Underworld, where Angelica lives, is a Gothic-like nightmare with mold, bugs, and creepy things. No wonder she wants out.

Perfect for Goosebumps fans this novel ends with a cliffhanger on the fate of the twins.

Big thanks to Netgalley and Scholastic for the advanced reading copy!

This was a really fun story that kept me on edge throughout the entire time. I love what K.R. Alexander did with the premise, and overall, it felt like a twisted lost episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark.

Alexander tipped the premise on its head quite quickly, and I appreciate how we wasted no time jumping into the chaos. Immediately we establish that Chelsea still talks to her deceased twin, and after the first couple of chapters, we're thrust into both existential dread and eerie antics that never fail to slow down.

My favorite aspect of the book was the dual POV between the two twins (one who's alive, and one who's narrating from the other side). Although Angela's perspective could feel a bit redundant at times, being able to hear her scheming every other chapter added a chilling layer of suspense.

The book seemed to end abruptly (there are a few pages omitted from my ARC - not sure if that is an extended ending or a preview of the author's next work?) but I was still a fan of how it all wrapped up. Indentikill effortlessly blended great scares with themes of grief, jealousy, and overcoming toxic relationships for young readers. I'm really excited to see how fans of Alexander's other work will respond to it, and look forward to his future works!

I suppose for 4th/5th graders who are just getting into the horror genre, this is a reasonable choice. There’s definitely a niche for this type of story. I get irked easily by this genre, because there isn’t a lot of quality writing out there. K.R. Alexander books, in particular, tend to be basic and cliched, with lots of plot holes. For introductory reading it’s fine, but for kids who appreciate better characters and a well crafted plot I would recommend Victoria Schwab, Katherine Arden, Ellen Oh, Dan Poblocki, and even Lindsay Currie.

Chelsea is a grieving twin who claims her dead sister, Angelica, still visits and talks to her as if she’s real. This has not been good for her social situation at school where she is bullied relentlessly by Riley. Then new girl Janette arrives offering unconditional friendship. Unfortunately, Angelica will have none of it. After all, she’s dead, bored, jealous, and getting meaner. Then, for reasons we never understand, she gains strength, becoming visible to people besides Chelsea. But as she grows stronger, Chelsea grows weaker. She won’t stop until she has Chelsea back, all to herself.

It’s a quick, mediocre read, straight to paperback, reminiscent of Goosebumps. Lots of kids love this. For those kids, I recommend.

A VERY quick 2.5 hour ghost story.......of two twin girls; One alive, and One DEAD!

Now, usually when I read or listen to the latest K.R. Alexander book, I am LOVING it; this new one, "Identikill" is just so, so.

Twin sisters Chelsea and Angelica are inseperable twins, but not only are they twins, they are BEST friends. The sad and bad part.......Angelica has been dead for 5 years now. Chelsea's family are constantly having to tell her that Angelica is no longer with her throughout her daily day anymore since the accicdent. Chesea knows better, because she sees, talks, and rides to school with her everyday, it is just that no one can hear her......or see her! But when Chelsea starts a new 6th grade class she still has the bully Riley in her school. But this year.....Chelsea (and Angelica!) are fighting back!

This did not have the fun, and creepy factor like all his other books have had, and this made this extremely fast to go thru......only 2 hours and 15 mins. I don't know if I would read another with these characters, they just weren't that fun. Still would recommend for kids who are still creeping into scary stories slowly.

2.5 ghosts and bullies

This is an excellent middle school book. I read this my 12-year-old, and to note our second book by this author! And not our last! When I was a middle schooler myself, my mother worked in an elementary school library, providing me with new titles to read and evaluate before releasing them into the library’s rotation. Now, although I am somewhat older than the intended audience, I still love these stories, and I don’t feel guilty reading them when I am reading them with my kiddo.

The MC faces the challenges of middle school, compounded by the mystery of her deceased twin sister, who continues to communicate with her. What is the purpose of this connection? Does she harbor ill will? And why doesn’t anyone believe she is speaking to her dead sister? Strong MC book also tackles a heavy theme involving a deceased sibling but a great ghost element will appeal no matter the age. I’d rate it a solid four stars and I am relieved I don’t have a twin! And also that ending........

Thank you Scholastic and NetGalley for a chance to review and give an honest review. This review is my own.

Haar zusje Angelica is vijf jaar geleden overleden.

In Identikill (4.5 star rea) we follow Chelsea after the death of her twin sister Angelica. In a new school trying to make new friends. When spooky things start happening, a sister kept in secret.

This was my first K.R. Alexander book and I rather enjoyed it. While at times it felt very sad and grief horror this book still had the spooky ghost vibes.

Chelsea was such a strong character and the friendship she had gained while not feeling guilty about Angelica was heart wrenching and beautiful. This book had a very nostalgic read to it and was atmospheric. Great pace and storyline. The parents did not overpower the story.

Overall I enjoyed this book rated it lower because it left some things on the table. Loved the ending and eery feeling of it all.

Thank you to Netgalley and Scholastic Inc for a digital copy for my honest review.

Identikill by K.R. Alexander

Can a twin be your best friend and your worst enemy…even after their death?
This middle grade horror book answers that exact question.

Identikill highlights a young girl’s struggle with the death of her twin sister and recounts an odd, paranormal story that keeps you engrossed in the tale throughout the book. The book is a quick read and yet still full of detail. The ending…not what you would expect!

This is an excellent book for teens and young adults who enjoy a suspenseful story. There are excellent lessons to be learned about good and evil; really making you think. I highly recommend this book, which is read easily and truly enjoyable! Huge thank you to Net Galley and Scholastic for allowing me to review this amazing book!

This was such an awesome palette refresher/break from my usual reads.

This was a quick read and left me feeling very reminiscent of Are You Afraid of the Dark. The nostalgia was definitely strong but in its own unique way.

Readers find out that Chelsea, who is now thirteen, lost her twin sister at seven. Since her passing she has been able to see/hear Angelica. She’s grown up the last five years feeling very alone and ostracized from her peers. Things take a turn once a possible new best friend arrives and threatens Angelica’s bond with Chelsea.

The ending made it seem like there could be a sequel.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this eARC for review.

Thank you Scholastic for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

This was a good middle-grade thriller. It felt a little predictable, and I wasn't sure at some points early on if it was going for actual paranormal or more psychological. The characters felt very realistic for their ages and I liked hearing the different perspectives between the twins. The story did a good job balancing a lot of emotions.

The ending was ok, but felt rushed and predictable. It didn't resolve things the way I would've liked it to and I felt like I was missing something as I walked away from the story.

*ARC review*

This fast-paced novel immediately immerses readers in its compelling narrative, ensuring sustained engagement. The dual-perspective approach effectively develops both Chelsea and Angelica, allowing readers to understand their motivations and perspectives. The book authentically portrays the complexities of middle-grade social dynamics, including friendships and instances of bullying, making it highly relatable for young readers. While the abrupt ending might leave some wanting more, the overall reading experience is enjoyable. This title is a strong addition to the library's horror collection, evoking a classic "Goosebumps" feel.

Although her twin sister, Angelica died, Chelsea can still see and hear her. When she told others about it, she became a target for bullies and struggled to make new friend. One day, a new student, Janette, befriends her. This makes Angelica really angry and she gets bent on doing anything to get her place back as her sister's only friend.

The plot is good and I liked how the presence of a ghost is the setting for the normal life of the protagonist with the chosen ensuing being the horror. I also liked the format for keeping two different fonts for the two different worlds. Overall, it is a good read for the readers of this genre.

Thank you Netgalley for an advanced copy!

This was such a good book! I do wish I'd realized it was the start of a series. At least it felt like the first of a series. I think a bit more showing of Chelsea and Angelica's life before one died, plus more story about the one twin's life without the other would have made this a 5 star read. As it is, I felt a bit ambivalent at the beginning. I was interested, but I didn't really care about the characters until much further in and then the story ended just as I was getting there. I feel like I missed an entire book before reading this one.

Holy cow this had me hooked all the way through! I love these types of ghost stories and K. R. Alexander has quickly became one of my top favorite authors. This was such a chilling book to read and experience! Definitely one I had a hard time putting down at times. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next so it kept my attention fully. The characters and the world building is phenomenal! Honestly I wholeheartedly believe this would be such a great book to film adaptation! I’m so grateful to have been given an ARC to read through Netgalley.

Identikill is about Chelsea who lost her twin, Angelica. Chelsea has been able to continue seeing and talking to her sister, which has left her ostracized by her peers until a new girl comes to town and befriends Chelsea. Now Chelsea must face Angelica’s wrath of jealousy as the sisters fight to find common ground and understanding.

K.R. Alexander is a popular middle-grade author of spooky stories and this one is sure to be a hit with his fans. This is a quick and easy read that is full of twists and turns to keep you on your toes from start to finish.

I have 2 boys, ages 11 and 13. They both enjoy K.R. Alexander books. When I had the opportunity to get an advance copy of Identikill for them from netgalley, I knew I had to.

I read this myself and I know my kids are going to enjoy it when they get the chance to read it.

It's the perfect amount of creepy. Also parts of the story are relatable for middle schoolers, which is always a plus when finding something my kids will enjoy reading.

Highly recommend if you're 10-14 year old is looking for something creepy to read.

Identikill is definitely more young adult/middle grade. Easy read - quick paced. Short.
Definitely has a creep factor!! A little spooky and a little weird!
Angelica died 5 years ago and seems to make life pretty difficult for her twin sister Chelsea who is still alive and trying to cope with starting middle school and not having many friends.

Identikill ends in a cliffhanger. So if you are wanting closure, don't expect it!

One of the better, spooky, middle grade horror books I've read.

Identikill is an excellent age appropriate paranormal thriller. These are the kind books that made me the avid reader I am today, so I was honored when NetGalley and Scholastic allowed me to read this ARC. The suspense and fear you feel as a reader is fantastic and both sisters are very well written. My only disappointment was the ending which felt very abrupt. I also wanted more information about the sisters relationship prior to Angelica’s death.

loved that this was so short and to the point. defiantly a young adult read for people trying to get into a thriller genre. I thought the characters were relatable, and emotions justified. left off on a cliffhanger so I am excited to read the next that comes out and continue Chelsea and Angelica's journey where ever it takes me.

I was really excited to read this book but it was definitely a let down! I never really connected to the characters and felt like I wasn’t really invested when reading it. KR Alexander definitely has better books. In my opinion, the ending was the best part but even that wasn’t that surprising.

What age is this good for?
Definitely 8-11! It’s scary enough for those ages but any age older I feel like would just find it boring.

Is it a quick read?
Yes! Very quick, only 172 pages.

Don't read this before bed lol. I did to finish this last night and I had a nightmare about Angelica. It was spooky and slightly dark from the plot. But it was enjoyable until I had the nightmare lol. Once again, K.R.Alexander never disappoints with his books ♥ On the back there was an "ad" to watch out for book two of Identikill! Since this one was released this year, I searched up book 2 and it will be released on January 6, 2026!! I can't wait to see my library gets it ♥

This was an entertaining, fast-paced middle grade thriller. It felt like an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark in book form. It was just the right amount of creepy for kids.
