The origins of Margate can be traced back to about 1050. The town developed its identity as a holiday resort during the first quarter of the 19th century. The images that appear in this book cover the period from 1870 to 1939 when professional photographers recorded many aspects of Margate.
A collection of historic stereographs (mostly nineteenth century) and photographs (mostly twentieth century) giving insights into the Kentish seaside town of Margate as it transformed into a holiday resort from roughly the early nineteenth century to just before the Second World War.
One of an extensive series (actually the second book in that series by Clements on Margate) covering historic images of British towns, it may not be an exciting read but it does provide insights into the lives of ancestors in a way that words alone cannot.
