Betrayal #4

It Hurts Me

Rate this book
My husband of two years tells me he wants an open marriage.

I'm stunned. I'm hurt. And I'm livid. I don't want to be married to a man that wants to open our bed to other people.

But then I get a flat tire in the pouring rain and a sexy-as-hell gentleman helps me out.

My husband is in the game, so one look at the skull ring on this gentleman's left hand tells me exactly who he is.

The Skull King.

I didn't want an open marriage...but I definitely want this man.

For those of you that had dived into the first three books as I did, you’re already familiar with Theo and why we were super excited for his story, if you haven’t read the previous ones, it’s not required, but I highly recommend checking them out!

Wow so this has so many twist to it

Astrid always dreamed of being an artist and even took a few art classes because she was super passionate about it at one point. But then her husband changed her mind, so she ended up working at a big art gallery, selling other people's art instead of creating her own. Now, I could go on about Astrid’s husband, but let’s just say he was a wealthy hitman. Yeah, you heard that right! He was home for about three to four days a week and then off on assignments the rest of the time. Their marriage wasn’t exactly perfect, but it worked for them—until one day he dropped the bomb that he wanted to open up their marriage. You can imagine how shocked Astrid was by that request. In the end, she felt like she had no choice but to go along with it to keep her husband. And just to make things even crazier, he also mentioned they should start planning for a family! Honestly, some people just never learn from their mistakes. Their arrogance can lead them to dig themselves into an even deeper hole. But hey, that’s just my take on it.

I was totally rooting for Astrid and Theo as their relationship started to blossom, but at the same time, I couldn't help but feel the tension. It made me wish for the healing and mending of the once-happy marriage that Astrid once cherished.

I don’t know what Astrid was thinking, It’s possible she agreed because she loved her husband, or maybe she thought he just needed to get it out of his system. I honestly didn’t know. Then they’d return to their old routine, just like that. Yeah, she was living it up in La La Ville.

What a gem this book. There is a long time which I don’t read a romance so good. The characters are complex and interesting.
It’s worth reading.

Oh Theo 🔥 the last half of this book had me flipping through pages so fast to get to the end! Theo is a large and in charge hunk who knew he wanted Astrid and went for it! His candor about their relationship is the perfect mix of a man. Bolton…ugh. How can he want an open marriage?! Astrid seems perfect…and then end Bolton stoops so low by the alternative just like how Dante did in the trilogy before. Bolton shows what kind of man he is by asking for an open marriage to begin with. I’ll just be sitting on the edge of my seat anxiously awaiting book 2!

Really?

Was loving this until the end and copped the EXACT storyline from the previous book!
Obviously this format worked so well before that its back in the very next book. So disappointing. This ending (cliff hanger) has really tainted my enjoyment of the rest of the book.

It was a good book ! I don’t have much to say about it except that it has ended the same way book 1 ended. I guess it is a good way to entice readers to read the next book and it works well on me

penelope sky’s stories are oftentimes VERY similiar (as in exact same characters and plot with different names) to each other, which has been a problem for me in the past. because she had written a few of my all time favorite books though, I continued giving her books another chance over and over again.

now to „it hurts me“: the fact that she pulled the exact same move in this book as in the one she literally just published right before this, actually disgusts me as I find it so lazy and also very disrespectful to her readership and the money that is spent on reading yet another copy paste story. one star, will not continue this series.

I will start by saying that I love Penelope’s books. I’ve read them all and am so happy to be able to read and review her work. This book is well written and entertaining, but as a fan of her work, I felt like I’ve read this book before. It seemed like the duplication of a storyline with different characters, which forced me to eliminated a few stars. Overall, it’s still a good read but predictable.

If you have read the first three books of the series, then you previously know who Theo is and why we were anxious to have his book 😍 and if you haven’t read the other books, is not necessary but I would 100% recommend.

Now, in “It Hurts Me” we get to know Astrid, who had a difficult life after losing her parents, but know she’s is married to Bolton and have a happily ever after…or that’s what she thinks until one day her husband tell her that he wants to have an open marriage and she agrees thinking he’s going to regret it. Unfortunately, Bolton don’t regret his decision and begins to sleep with other women, so, Astrid feels her world is falling apart but that’s the push she needed to fall in the arms of Theo, a handsome, enigmatic man she met when her car had a flat tire.

First of all FXCK YOU BOLTON, i hate him so much, I couldn’t believe everything he said to Astrid, he is a pig. Also, an important fact, Bolton is in the mafia world and he’s a hit man so every time he was away he was getting a job done, so tell me Bolton after you kill someone you wanted to have sex and since you didn’t have close your wife you prefer cheating? 🖕🏼🖕🏼

And poor Astrid, she has went through a lot all her life and getting this?? She deserves someone who loves and adores her, someone who wants to have a normal family and life and it hurts me saying this but Theo is not getting close to this 😭😭. I mean, Theo was h🥵t and while they were together the other women doesn’t exist to him and they had an explosive chemistry but Astrid, my girl, when you was sad , I was sad too and you don’t deserve to share your time with a man who is so closed to have a relationship, doesn’t even want to try and at the first problem let you go “for the best”🤨

And I must say, at the end I thought I was reading again Alex and Scarlett (I loved reading a little bit of them in this book) it was the same situation as when Dante threatened Axel to stay away from Scarlett and I thought: “Yesss Theo, show him who the Skull King is!!” Aaaand nothing, he agreed 😫 like he’s your enemy and you hate him not only because he’s Astrid’s husband but because he has information you want to know about your brother and you agree to his demands???? I was disappointed with him and I know we have a lot to know about Theo and his past and why he’s so closed to the people but, right know he’s not my favorite.

I hope Astrid makes him beg for her, it’s at least what she deserves as the queen she is 😗. Noooow we wait until it pains me comes out.

Theo’s character gets much more than 5 stars. Astrid character is a disappointment. He deserves better.

5+++ I have loved this series and couldn’t wait for Theo’s story. Ms. Sky delivered another well written book of Theo and Astrid’s story. Loved Theo’s character in Axel and Scarlett’s trilogy and fell back in love with him in his story.

PS knows how to write emotional antiheros without over dramatization or overt use of their roles in the criminal underworld. She knows how to write a story about men who don’t need sex toys or sex clubs to attract their women. They are lovers who cherish the women in these stories even though that may spell disaster. They know how to make love and how to be demanding in bed. They successfully balance their criminal world with the women they choose to make their own until something throws a wrench in that world. They’re vulnerable, strong and complex. Few authors are able to successfully write a MMC such as Theo or Axle because of the length the author goes to create deep characters who have their own histories and baggage. She successfully segways that history into the story she creates about them.

Astrid ‘s character is one of Ms. Sky's main female that I have a hard time with. There have only been a few to date in the long list of books I have read from this author where I didn't really like one of the main characters. She finally grew a backbone by books end but was disappointed she never told Theo about Bolton. Her character was contradictory throughout book one. She seemed like a character on the fence vs., one that did not have her feet on the ground. It took her too long to leave Bolton even though it was tearing her up inside. The “I love him but hate him” made her a very indecisive character and one I am having a hard time with. She's too needy in wanting someone to take care of her. It's obvious she is not in love with Bolton and just settled and was surprised when he wanted to have sex with other women.

Ms. Sky is a great author who can write gut wrenching entertaining stories in this genre unlike many of her counterparts. She is able to write a story that resonates with characters that you have a connection with and remember long after reading the book.

Note: I finally started book 2 now that book 3 is out and found Astrid making some of the same stupid decisions she did in book 1. I had hoped that she actually grew a backbone and was going to grow up in book 2 without being so co-dependent, but no such luck.

The Skull King is back! And he’s hotter than ever!

I’m loving these betrayal series books just as I’ve loved all Penelope Sky’s series. It’s great to see that Axel and Scarlett are making a life for themselves together, but what of Axel’s brother-from-another-mother… Theo - The much revered and respected Skull King.

Theo’s somewhat of an anomaly. Whilst he’s this ruthless, Mafia boss that rules his dominion with fear and the threat of retribution should you cross him, he’s also a deep and feeling soul… a lost soul who wants nothing more to avenge the brutal death of his predecessor and twin brother Killian.

To achieve that, however will potentially make him a target of his arch nemesis, Bolton and his Brotherhood and the man who put out to contract for his brother’s head.

To make matters worse, when Bolton suggests that he and his doting and dutiful wife, Astrid enter into an open marriage, an unassuming Theo steps into her life. Neither are aware of the consequences that will befall their doomed relationship.

We can all see where this was going to go. From the moment Theo and Astrid start to get close, it’s inevitable that disaster is looming.

Astrid certainly deserves so much better than her deadbeat cheating husband. Any man who is twisted enough to ask for an open marriage so that he can play around with his mistresses whilst his wife stayed at home isn’t worthy of a sweet soul like Astrid. She deserves so much more. And we all hope that Theo is the one to show her. He sees her worth and knows her value, but will that be enough? Will he ever feel worthy of her? Will he ever be able to entrust his heart to another.

Just like the previous books in this series, I’m holding out for a happy ending because I love these two characters. Theo needs someone like Astrid to give him the love and loyalty he unknowingly seeks. But with Bolton pulling the strings, who knows what will happen.

Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Some men want to have their cake and eat it too!

This is the first book in Astrid and Theo's story, it ends on a cliffhanger so be prepared. Astrid is devastated when her husband of two years asks to have an open marriage. Astrid begrudgingly agrees but has a really hard time being able to sleep with another man until she realizes her husband wasted no time at all and has been bedding lots of different women. Astrid finally feels a connection with Theo and sleeps with him but things with her husband just get more strained because she feels like she should've been enough for him. Now her feelings for her husband are waning and her feelings for Theo are growing. Too bad her husband and Theo are enemies and when her husband finds out about Theo sleeping with his wife he gives Theo an ultimatum.

I didn’t think it was possible to love Theo, our Skull King, anymore than I already did. I was wrong!

He’s a wonderful friend/brother, takes care of business, and leaves no stone unturned when it comes to sniffing out dangerous situations that threaten his family.

Astrid is a fantastic FMC,
Intelligent
Loyal
Talented
So when her husband, who claims to love her above all things ask her for an open marriage,I gasped and felt absolutely loathing for his character.
Enter Theo…and his own special brand of healing.
Yes. Please. 💋
Their chemistry is palpable, their volleying banter so satisfying to watch, and experience.

Thoughts: Astrid processing of the end of her dream marriage, and her subsequent acceptance and disappointment in losing parenthood alongside her husband, was excruciating to read.
Denial and grief, acceptance and anger, it was all there on page.

It is a true testament to Penelope’s skill as a writer that while one cheers on her budding relationship with Theo, you also feel the conflict and yearn for the repair and reconciliation of a formally happy and thriving marriage that Astrid lived for.

Axel and Scarlett have several cameos in this story, and I find a fascinating that Theo was able to give Axel and Scar the very best, and most heartfelt advice yet,he can be so unaware of his own failures in his approach to relationships outside of his comfortable circle of friends.

I loved seeing their relationship develop and unfold, and after that explosive cliffhanger, I’m dying to see what happens next between these two troubled characters, who need one another so desperately.
Penelope Sky explores grief and longing in a very honest and authentic way. This is a wonderful beginning to the second part of this, her Betrayal series.

3.5 stars

Okay originally after reading it I graded it 4 stars. After sitting with it for a little bit, I downgraded to 3.5 only because it seems like it's gearing up to be the same as the first trilogy.

Theo gave Axel so much crap about what Dante did to him and how it shouldn't have mattered and he should've told Scarlett and now the same exactly thing is being done to him by Bolton. And what does he do? The same exact thing Axel did. I hope this isn't foretelling what's to come with books 5 and 6.

However, Theo was the story I kinda wanted during the original trilogy and the fact that Astrid is currently married (Bolton wants an open marriage) was...different? I get why Bolton was so mad. He was hooking up with randos instead of having a full on relationship with one person, but at the same time, it was his idea and there were no rules discussed ahead of time, so I don't feel bad for him. I feel bad for Astrid, though. At this point I think she'd be better off without either of them which sucks 'cause I really like Theo and was dying for his story after the original trilogy.

This one ends with the same exact cliffy as book 1 and it's basically the same plot (just open marriage v daughter of boss/partner), so we'll see how this goes.

Michael Ferraiuolo and Ramona Master continue to narrate the series and they're continuing to do a fantastic job. I think Michael's voice is better suited for Theo than it was for Axel, but those two in combination is fantastic!
I will say the little bit of Axle and Scarlett we get in this book made me so happy. Getting to see their lives after their story was wonderful.

IF

With a plot that sucks you right in, you don't realize how deep you are until 99% and yep...cliffy. Here, the plot is good, but the prose is in a detached style. Loved the open and honest communication, but it all meant nothing when this is a 3 book series. As with all stretched out plots, this one is nothing more than the rising action and climax of the main couples' overall romance and story arc. Shame, too, because so many notes were sung beautifully. We got a lot of tell and little show for this obsessive and possessive side. Crow was an engaging and magnetic character where Theo is more laid back and casual. Astrid made smart moves with her heart, and I was proud of how she handled Bolton. Ultimately, I'm a sucker for the "my husband, love of my life, blindsided me asking for an open marriage so he can cheat in tge open. Now ripped apart, I'm starting to fall un love with another man" micro-trope. We see the tell-tale signs of falling into a relationship, but poor Theo is lying to himself. Wish this was a standalone, maybe even duology, but as a trilogy, I'm out.

Wow! I devoured this book! I loved Theo and Astrid together. Bolton why?!?!? Seeing the development of Theo and getting a bit of his background was something I’ve been craving for so long. It was so good to actually get his history and see him develop into something that we craved!! Astrid having her heartbroken twice mad me hurt and sad for her. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes their story!! Bravo Penelope on another great set of characters we’re falling in love with!!

Another great start to an amazing series. A beautifully written story that you won't be able to put down until you're finished! So hot! Bolton wants an open marriage which is heartbreaking for Astrid. Then she meets Theo. Theo is so patient with Astrid and I’m hoping she’ll kick Bolton to the side and choose Theo. Will she stay with Bolton or choose Theo. Penelope is the best and I can’t wait for the next book to find out.

Theo is everything!! He is like the perfect mix of Crow and Griffin and he makes you 🥵🥵. Astrid has her hands full juggling both men but she definitely made the best move leaving Bolton. I am praying she doesn't go back because of Boltons BS moves!! I was melting for Theo and Axel in Axel books but now it's even worse!!! Axel acting like a little kid. I have loved watching the Skull Kings transform over the years!!

It Hurts Me did not disappoint! What it did do, however, was make me want all of Theo and Astrid’s story! Theo has so many layers, all of them are sexy but not all of them are dark ! Astrid is just the woman that can handle Theo and he is the man that can fix her broken heart !! You will laugh at Axel and love Scarlet ! Get the book, get comfortable and get hooked on Theo and Astrid! You won’t regret it !❤️🔥

Self note:

✖️the husband asked for an open marriage and later turned out to be an abuser and a r@pist
✖️the H in the story, which I will call him as zero, wh0re around with pr0stitutes while the h was being abused by the husband. Because he’s mad since the h rejected his idea of getting back together when he was the one who initiated the breakup. And oh don’t forget there’s also the dead wife trope too 😌

In another word, the h deserves so much better than these two clowns.

Axel got his HEA & now we get Theo’s story, and holy fuck is it intense!
Theo doesn’t suffer fools, he is The Skull King, a ruthless leader.
The chemistry between Theo & Astrid was immediate and intense! They were in a unique situation and it took them some time to finally get together but when they did it was passionate and intense!
But when you’re a King someone is always trying hard to make you fall.
And things fall hard…. Will Theo & Astrid survive the fall?

I was super excited to read Theo's book. I fell for him when he was introduced to the series as The Skull King. This book starts off a few years after Axel and Scarlett's story. We meet our fmc Astrid when she has a blown tire in the rain. A man pulls over and insists on changing her tire so she can get off the street late at night. Astrid notices the ring he wears and was intrigued even after their chance encounter. Theo comes off as very cocky and has a idgaf attitude but it works for him. It makes his sweet moments even sweeter.

Fast forward a little, we meet Astrid on probably the worst day of her life. As mentioned in the synopsis, her husband Bolton suggests an open marriage. I felt Astrid's pain. They have only been married for 2 years and he already wants to sleep with other women. Reading things like this always hit a little close to home. I connected well with Astrid. Trauma bonded I guess. I loved her. I think she is a strong af fmc even when she seems broken.

The chemistry between Theo and Astrid was undeniable. I enjoyed watching their relationship progress. As the story went on it started to pick up speed. This book wasn't as quick of a read as the rest of the series. It also wasn't as plot driven in my opinion. It focused primarily on Theo and Astrid which was new to me. I enjoyed seeing Axel again. He is still my favorite. He seemed a bit vulgar in this book though. Especially the way he would talk to Theo about Scarlett. That was surprising to me. I was here for it though.

Some of the dialogue/description of things (specifically intimate scenes) felt different to me than Penelope's usual. The end of the book left much to be desired. It ends in a cliffhanger which is Penelope's style. The last few chapters felt too similar to Axel and Scarlett's storyline. I wish it was something different and refreshing. It did work well in the other books but I just wanted something new.

Regardless of the small issues I had, the relationship between Theo and Astrid is worth the read. The bit of drama between her husband and Theo kept me on the edge of my seat. I was engaged through the entire book. I never felt bored or wanted the story to end. I am looking forward to the next one!

This book is about Theo and Astrid’s love story.
Astrid is married to Bolton who is a contract killer. So she is familiar with the lifestyle and had never felt or been in danger. She was in love with him and as far as she knew their marriage was a good marriage. He is the only one she’s ever wanted. One day Bolton comes home and asks Astrid for an open marriage. He is gone long periods of time and it gets lonely. This devastated really her. She didn’t know what to feel or think.
One night she was driving home after work and got a flat tire. This gorgeous man stopped and changed her tire for her. He told her to get home this is not someplace she should be. One evening
Astrid was in the gallery where she worked. She was visibly upset standing there. The same stranger came in. He saw her from the window and wanted to make sure she was alright she looked so distraught. It was the same gorgeous man that changed her tire! She couldn’t believe that he would check on her.
This sexy man she wanted after she learned that her husband had been with other women already.
Theo was plotting to kill Bolton. He is who has the information he wants on who killed Theo’s brother. One night he had the chance to kill him. But didn’t want to kill him in front of his wife who ended up to be none other than Astrid.
Theo was given an ultimatum to stop seeing Astrid to lose her and go running back into Bolton’s arms. Will this work?

This book is romantic, steamy, sexy, dangerous, love, and deceit. Once I started reading I could not put it down. It’s captivating, dangerous and full of the emotions. Read the book to see how Astrid and Theo’s romance grows and what it grows into. Does Theo kill Bolton? Does Theo stop seeing Astrid? Does Astrid return to Bolton. You have to read this book. Penelope does such a fantastic job of writing dark romance books. Oh but those cliffhangers keep you wanting more! I’m ready to read the next book “It Pains Me.” You won’t want to miss this series!

I was really looking forward to reading the part of this series featuring another Skull King, since I've loved all of the Skull Kings in the past books. And I did love what you learned about Theo in the earlier books of this series.

But as a whole, this series is disappointing me. Basically, Theo's story is exactly the same as Axel's story for the most part. There are some minor differences, but I feel like I'm reading the same story. The main characters are crazy attracted to each other, and there's an antagonist that wants to keep them apart and forces the hero to break her heart (Dante in Axel's books and Bolton in Theo's books). Even the spicy parts are pretty much interchangeable.

As much as I hate to say this because I love Penelope's books, I'm starting to think she's writing too many of them and not taking much time with each one. I have favorite authors where they do one book a year, or maybe two. And it kills me to wait for the next book to come out! But they are always worth the wait. I almost feel like Penelope's just phoning it in.

But that's not to say that I'm not gonna be reading the rest of the books in the series .... And any future books she puts out. And I absolutely love the bonus stories that have come out about the Barsettis.

My fingers crossed that the remaining Theo/Astrid books astonish me!!!

As an aside, I am really disappointed also about this kickstarter stuff! I religiously buy all her books. Now that I'm retired and looking to unclutter, I buy my books on Kindle, but I still buy them. I do not appreciate this whole thing about buying them again ... With bonus episodes being the thing that prods me into buying them if I want to read the bonuses. I won't be doing that .... And it does make me a little angry as a dedicated fan Penelope's writing!

I was given the honour of reading this book as an arc read

This book is amazing

Astrid is an art dealer, who is married to a professional unaliver who is part of the ‘Brotherhood’. When her car breaks down one evening, a knight in shining armour comes to her aid and changes her tyre.
Life seems to be good until her husband asks to make their marriage and open marriage, and it destroys her. She doesn’t understand why he wants this and really doesn’t want too.
This is until she sees Theo again and everything changes.
She is employed to provide art for this study, and when she meets him for a private viewing, she realises who he is.
They agree to go to dinner together and talk freely to each other, but at the end of the night she decides that they can’t spend the night together because it feels wrong to her.
Theo is ‘The Skull King’ and runs the underground organisation. He is tall, dark and very handsome, and is immediately drawn to Astrid
After a couple of dates, and finding out the her husband now has several women, she takes the plunge and starts a relationship’ with him, which makes her feel alive for the first time in so long.

During their time together Theo realises who Astrids husband is, and this changes everything.

Thee is a huge twist at the end, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next

This book was incredible and I loved every second of it.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves dark romance, mafia romance, and incredible characters 🥰🥰🥰

Listen, when I told you that Theo was going to be MY man, I wasn’t kidding. I LOVED the complexity between Theo’s and Astrid’s relationship. Can you imagine your spouse comes to you asking for an open marriage?! Well, that’s what happened here with Astrid, and omg, I felt AWFUL for her. I think Penelope did a good job of showing the toll that kind of relationship can take on someone who isn’t meant for that. You can see how much Astrid struggles with this arrangement. She almost feels like she isn’t good enough for Bolton, her husband, even though she tries her best to be the absolute perfect wife. You can see the impact the arrangement has on her mentally.

I also can’t pinpoint what exactly about Theo pulls me towards him, but it’s just something about him.. his attitude.. the way he acts with/around Astrid. It’s the whole man to be honest, he just oozes so much sexiness, I love it!! Although, I’m not sure how I feel about Bolton. I don’t necessarily hate the guy.. it does seem like he loves Astrid but is struggling with the concept of monogamy. I just can’t really say he’s the “bad guy” in this book.. although, he definitely ain’t the pitch perfect husband or man.. so there’s that.

I’m so excited to see what happens between Theo and Astrid in the next book. This story ended in a mess and a mix of emotions, so it’ll be interesting to see the conflict between Theo and Astrid get resolved (if it does!).
