Mercer Mayer, Astronaut Critter (Simon and Schuster, 1986)

Mercer Mayer is crazy prolific. Wikipedia reports, as of this writing (August 2013), he's published over three hundred books. Well over half of them are Little Critter books; Astronaut Critter was one of the first board book originals. It is an extremely simple tale, aimed at the pre-lit set, where as is often the case with Mayer, the story is told by the pictures rather than the words (it's narrated by the Critter, and the humor is aimed more at the adults who will be reading the book to the kids, one thinks); it's all in good fun. I think my wife and I actually like it more than the Bean does; it goes into the reading-time pile on occasion, but he could generally take it or leave it. Personally, I wish the story had been developed a little more, but if you find it used or get it out of the library, give it a shot and see what your child thinks. ** ½

Synopsis: "Pretending to be an astronaut, a little critter launches his spacecraft, sights the moon, lands, and explores the moon in his lunar rover. On board pages."

My Review: This was a fun book for the little future astronauts. It helps encourage the imaginative play. It is a short story great for toddlers or even some preschoolers and of course the familiar Little Critter characters. Munchkin had a blast with this book even though it is a little young for him.
