Illustrated in full color. Little Critter wants to play with Kitty, but Grandma says she's sleeping. By the time he searches the entire farm for the cat, Little Critter is ready for a nap, too!
Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
This lift-the-flap board book doesn't have a very sophisticated plot. Little Critter looks for his grandmother's cat in various places and finally finds it. What made me love this book (and the very similar Where is My Frog?) was how much my boys loved it. They were enthralled with this book when they were young enough that they usually bypassed looking at books and just tried to stick them straight into their mouths. Sadly, this is now out-of-print.
I would give one and a half stars to this book. There are some genuinely funny moments, as Mercer Mayer uses the lift-the-flap idea to create some unexpected humor. Quite a few of these similar-style Chunky Flap Books written by Mercer Mayer have been released, but this one is probably my favorite, to this point.
This is a great lift the flap book, BUT it is for older toddlers. The pages and flaps are similar to playing card material making the flaps difficult even for me to get open at times. Otherwise, its a great book. Tons of little details for kids to enjoy. Natalie's favorite page was the scarecrow in the cornfield. She asked to hear this a few times in a row for several days.
I read this book to my 3 month old and she loved it! Very colorful and engaging even to a little one. She smiled when we lifted the flaps and even tried lifting the flaps herself. I can see this book growing with her. She can look for different characters on each paper and discuss animal sounds as she gets older.
This book was a favorite of my two youngest nephews (the girls -- not so much). The boys never tired of peeking under each flap and proclaiming, "No, kitty." And they liked to identify the animals. Best loved by kids ages from about 1.5 to 3 years.
This fun little lift-the-flap book will have kids enjoying all the farm animals. I like how Little Critter's little mouse friend adds some humorous comments.
