What, what, am I to do with all of this life? The novel is structured as a series of thirty-four vignettes and follows the titular character Maud Martha, a young Black girl, growing up in late 1920's Chicago. It is a sort of coming of age tale, as we witness Maud growing into a woman, struggling with race, class and gender.
