Clan MacPherson #1

His Secret Highland Bride

Rate this book
Fans of Heather McCollum and Keira Montclair will love this tale of warring clans, a braw Highlander, and a secret none of them saw coming.

It’s been five years since Shane MacPherson stepped foot on his clan’s lands. Still haunted from years at war and the painful ache of loss, duty has called once again…and with it, his obligation to claim his place as the new laird of Clan MacPherson. But when Shane encounters a lass—a Valkyrie in both temperament and foul tongue!—in trouble, he puts title and duty aside to defend her…

Lindsay Wallace would rather die than call the MacPherson lands her home—let alone their horrid clan. She just has to survive a month with her vile uncle before being married off as a peace offering between the Wallaces and MacPhersons. The only person she can trust is a simple soldier who is strong of body and heart. She has no interest in marrying her betrothed…so why not give in to the temptation of a soldier’s kiss?

But promises made can’t be broken or forgotten. And as shadows and war rise once again in the Highlands, Shane and Lindsay must find the courage to face their deepest secrets and their duty…before both love and clan are ripped apart.

Should I read in order?
I think this is the first book of the Clan MacPherson series?

Basic plot:
Shane and Lindsey find solace in a friendship when they both should be worried about their upcoming arranged marriages

Give this a try if you want:
- 1695 Scotland setting
- secret identity (both mains!)
- Scottish mains
- prodigal hero returns
- widower hero
- celibate hero
- beloved pets – hero takes in a stray dog
- one horse
- arranged marriage elements
- lower steam – I count this as 1 full scene plus a variety of short, closed door and alluded to scenes

Ages:
- I didn’t see them mentioned

First line:
Breathing in the scents of blooming heather and sunshine, Shane MacPherson allowed the first moments of his return home to sink in.

My thoughts:
I am so sad I struggled with this novel! I read one prior by Hanson and enjoyed a lot about it.

Now, I know I don’t do the best with secret keeping that lasts most of the book so that might have been part of my problem here. But the other thing that threw me off was the last book I read by her was pretty steamy! And this novel did have open door scenes, but other than the first scene being really great, the rest were very short and not developed at all. So I was disappointed in that and it wasn’t what I was expecting for her.

I think I never grew to love Shane. I understand needing a break and having to deal with your grief, but the fact that he saw multiple times and examples of how badly his people needed him, how he knew his step-mother was so awful and was ruining the clan/town, and he still just hid out for weeks just bothered me. It made him less respectable to me because these people were his people, and they were suffering and he saw it and stayed in his own world for too long (to me).

I did enjoy Lindsey for the most part, but also got frustrated with her when I felt she was being hypocritical. She gets very upset with Shane for doing the same thing she did, and I just couldn’t sympathize.

I did love the slower pace and character focus of the book. I also loved that they were together, alone, for much of the book and all that close proximity in the cabin was really sweet.

I think those wanting a slower paced highlander romance with secret identity would enjoy this one!

Quotes/spoiler-y thoughts:Any mistakes/typos are my own

Content warnings: These should be taken as a minimum of what to expect. It’s very possible I have missed some.

Quick summary: Shane and Lindsey are supposed to get married; but both aren’t keen on doing so. Both keep their identities a secret but they end up married to each other anyway, without either of them knowing who the other one truly is.
Shane McPherson returned to his clan’s land after fighting in France for five years. After the death of his father he returns home and is expected to wed the daughter of the Wallace clan. But after experiencing the loss of his Spanish wife and the scars of the war, he doesn’t feel ready to take on his laird duties or get married. So he hides out in a small family cottage. Lindsey Wallace is also not looking forward to being wedded off to the McPherson laird. She meets Shane when he rescues her from her uncle. She decides to keep her surname a secret from this McPherson soldier. And Shane also keeps secret that he’s the new laird…
Generally, I liked the book. I really like reading highlander stories! The pace though was a bit slow, and thus the chemistry was a bit lacking. I had expected Shane to be more decisive, since he knew he was the new laird. It felt he was shirking his responsibilities towards his clan. It wasn’t fair towards Lindsey to marry her, considering how he felt about marriage and his deceased wife, and not fair towards his clan. And then he kept hiding - it wasn’t very manly. Lindsey made the best of the situation, I liked that about her. Overall a nice read that just could have used a bit more pace and a main character with a bit more spunk.
As for the author, it's the first book I've read of hers and I am looking forward to reading the next book hopefully about Ronan and maybe the book after that will be about Alec! I think there’s a lot of potential there and I will definitely check them out.

I received eARC for my honest opinion.

This book has a lot of secrets in it, and when you think that some might spill out or that the ones holding the secrets will talk, they don’t. You will find in this book romance, second chances, secrets, miscommunication, and of course learning to trust your instincts.

I really enjoyed this historical romance and to have it in the Scottish Highlands made it “chef’s kiss”. This book is about 2 characters whose fathers have arranged their marriage. Shane does not want to remarry again, because he feels if he does, he is letting down his dead wife when they made their vows. Lindsay is not happy to marry because when she took care of her aunt who was ill saw how Shane’s father treated his clan members and didn't think highly of them. With a chance encounter Shane and Lindsay don’t fully tell each other who they’re but over some time they become close and wed… even when knowing that they’re both promised to another, or so they think…

I thought the world building was done well, and the plot was easy to follow. I thought the pace of the book was done well and I didn’t have any problems with understanding what was going on or who was talking. The attention to details when it comes to their emotions, and how they're handling them. This was my first Allison Hanson book, and it will not be my last. I loved the characters and I found them to be easy to connect with.

I found Lindsey so easy to relate to, I want to have her as my friend. She is smart, strong, determined, she thinks outside of the box and isn’t scared to get her hands dirty. I like that she didn’t just bow down for anyone, but instead played it smart. I loved the chemistry that Lindsey and Shane had, and it was right away but the slow burn to get them to the moment was done well.

I found Shane to be a little bit gloomy about his dead wife and having feelings for someone else but at the same time I could understand. I liked how it was written and how the author handled his grief. I enjoyed that he was a good guy through and through and that he wouldn’t put up with anyone thinking that they could hurt any women in his clan. If I was in Lindsay's shoes I would have fallen head over heels for Shane too.

If you want a historical romance, with great chemistry, a little heartbreak, a second chance at love, and of course action, you should pick up this book.

I want to thank NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to review this book.

I enjoyed this historical romance between Lindsay, a noblewoman facing a forced marriage to a Scottish laird, and Shane, a broken soldier returning home from war, grief-stricken with the loss of his young wife and reluctant to assume his new role as leader of his clan.

Each of the two main characters is hiding behind a secret identity, and they fall in love and marry without knowing they are betrothed to each other.

An enjoyable read for lovers of Scottish highland romance!

Enjoyed everything about this one! They both had secrets and didn’t want the marriage forced on them. There were lots of barriers in their way and a lot of villains trying to disrupt their future. Like the stepmom who was basically a scam artist she was a fun one. Loved their secret little romance before they realized who they were to each other. I love this time era too in the scottish highlands and the weeks away just to send a message to the neighboring clans. It seems so simple and rugged.

Shane and Lindsay’s story moved a little slow for me. I looked for the excitement and engagement between the characters and their allies, but the story seems to be timid. The romance between Shane and Lindsay is told and a sweet and genuine way. That has kept me interested. Their dialogue is charming and engaging and entertaining. The heat or spice between the two is very high. I like the story, but I would like to read more intensity and drama between the characters. More nail biting drama and action. Along with surprises and twists that will have you dropping your mouth.

Scotland,1695

After fighting for five years in France Shane MacPherson returns home to Scotland. He is now a broken man with both physical and mental scars. He is filled with shame and regret because his beautiful, Spanish, wife Maria was murdered while he was away fighting on the battlefield. Furthermore he has not returned to his castle after finds out his father has died which makes him the laird being the eldest son and heir. In addition his is father has made a bridal match for him! This from a man who has ignored him and his siblings most of their lives. As this was done without a care or thought for Shane just to make sure his step mother Deidre is kept in all of her priceless jewels and coin which make Shane so angry! Well things were definitely going to change once he accepts his title and position. His father was only concerned for Deidre but could have at least sent Shane a brief message to France to him to at inform his heir some type of consideration or warning about his future and a faceless wife he will never love!

Shane now hears a woman screaming and goes to protect her and is shocked that two MacPhersons guards were about to attack this beautiful, defenseless, lass! This is how Shane MacPherson meets Lindsay Wallace, his betrothed, even though neither of them knew the truth. As he is now living in his step-brother Ronan's humble cabin on the secluded edge of town while he was visiting with his grandfather. They were best friends and had each backs in the war in France. Luckily Ronan did not take after his heartless, vain, selfish mother who only spends the clan's coin that is needed for planting, food, bandages, livestock and necessities needed to survive!

He tells Lindsay he was a soldier that just returned from France. He is also dressed in humble clothing so neither of them shared their true background or titles. Lindsay didn't look like a Laird's daughter with paper thin worn clothing and wild hair but they became friends quickly and start having feelings for each other although Shane tries to deny it! However she is the first person who has started to make him open his heart again and make him smile, something he hadn't done in a very long time. Shane starts to feel things including guilt for this valkyrie woman even though he is promised to another. Lindsay does not care if she does have a betrothed man she has no interest in marrying just because her clan is forcing her. She is attracted to this poor MacPherson handsome soldier who is her savior and always so kind and caring. However she gives him a false name of Cameron not realizing this clan is an enemy of Clan MacPherson. She had sent her father letters to break another betrothal and to allow her to come home, however they have all been unanswered.

Is it even possible for Shane to love another living with so much guilt and grief from his first wife’s death? Lindsay imagines that this MacPherson Laird to be an uncaring monster and only wants to escape. She can’t help but desire this poor soldier and his sweet wee dog. With all these secrets and lies will Shane and Lindsay ever reveal the truth? What is in the future for this Laird and his secret bride? What will they do when they both realize they have both deceived each other with secrets and lies? Will they feel furious and betrayed? Read and discover their fate!

After fighting abroad for five years, Shane MacPherson, now a guilt and grief-stricken widower is back in Scotland and must take over as Laird of his clan now that his father has passed away. He must also honor an agreement made by his father to marry the Laird of the Wallace clan’s daughter. He is on his way home to Cluny Castle to face the responsibilities bearing down on him, when he comes across a woman being assaulted on his lands, he is horrified to realize the men are MacPhersons and intervenes. This is when he meets Lindsay and with her, he finds peace for the first time since his beloved wife died. She seems to understand his grief and helps him heal. Yet neither is quite honest with the other, Shane believes Lindsay to be a maid and she believes him to be a simple soldier. They find a bit of happiness together and though they both think they are promised to others thanks to their fathers, they plan to defy them by marrying. But eventually Shane must return home and it is there that his short-lived happiness ends.

Lindsay Wallace was sent to the MacPherson clan by her mother to tend her ailing aunt, but when she arrived it was to learn that her aunt had already passed. She tries to help her uncle and his children, but is treated horribly by them and wants to return home. Her parents refuse and inform her of her impeding nuptials to the Laird of the MacPhersons. After the way she has been treated by them, Lindsay wants nothing to do with the MacPherson clan and certainly doesn’t want to marry their Laird. Shane is the only MacPherson she has met who seems honorable and they form a friendship of sort. She agrees to marry him to save herself, but wonders if she is doing the right thing, since he clearly still loves his first wife. When they return to Shane’s home, Cluny Castle, the truth comes out and any chance of happiness she might have had vanishes.

I am torn about this book, the writing was good and the characters likable, but the pace of the story was slow and the misunderstandings and misassumptions dragged on way too long to be truly enjoyable. The story has a lot going on and a lot of action, but relies heavily on misunderstanding, secrets and lies to keep the story moving forward – all of which become tiresome to the reader, especially when the issues could have easily been resolved with a bit of honest conversation. Personally, I didn’t feel any chemistry between Shane and Lindsay – he was still in love with his wife and blamed himself for her death, making it almost impossible for him to move on and then when he decided that it was time, he found something else to feel guilty about – UGH! And Lindsay wasn’t much better, she was a hypocrite who was quick to jump to conclusions and to judge and very slow to forgive – Double UGH! I didn’t hate this book, but I didn’t love it and wouldn’t read it again. This is the first book in the and while I didn’t care for this story, I would definitely read the next book.

As my first true Highlander romance (both MCs are from Scottish clans), I really enjoyed this book. This is the first in a new series, The MacPherson Clan, and begins when the new MacPherson laird must return home after being away at war in France, to claim his birthright which includes a betrothal to another clan. But in those years, Shane has lived and seen a lot and needs time to adjust to his new role and the idea of a new bride. Enter Lindsey. She’s tough yet beautiful, has been made to serve her cousins and uncle, and desperately needs saving from his borderline abusive and harassing home. When Shane intercedes on an almost assault in progress on Lindsey, it would only make sense that the two of them could help each other out. He can provide a safe space by marrying her AND get out of his betrothal.

It should be no surprise that there are lots of secrets between characters—it’s mentioned in the title! Lindsey also has her secrets and is supposed to be betrothed to the new MacPherson laird, but after living with her horrid uncle, she wants nothing to do with this clan. The storytelling was very thought out and developed and I enjoyed the saga-type story that developed between Shane, Lindsey, and their families. I got the feeling that this would make for a great movie: there’s the evil stepmother, the brawny MMC who has been emotionally scarred, the pure and good FMC, the warring clans with a fight scene…it read like an epic novel and I became invested in these characters.

The secrets and slight miscommunication did seem to last for a bit longer than I would’ve liked, but the reconciliation was well worth it. I also would’ve liked to see a little more steam? I think it’s because some scenes were danced around and I wanted to feel their intimate connection instead of just being told about it or having a scene begin only to have the end one sentence later. I enjoyed Lindsey as a heroine and liked her POV the most (probably because as a woman. I could relate to her more emotionally?) She volunteers and works tirelessly, she loves hard, and she gives 100%. It would’ve been interesting to see her secret ousted a little earlier because although Shane’s secret hurts her, she also carries some of the blame. The next book most likely will be Alec’s, but I’d love to see a future story between Ronan and Tory. I have a feeling those two would be on fire for one another. This was a great first Highlander romance and would definitely recommend Allison B. Hanson for her storytelling ability. I received an early copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Shane MacPherson, newly minted Laird of clan MacPherson, is a soldier, widower, and scarred from battles and the death of his wife. He is returning home due to his father's death, however, not yet ready to take on the mantle of Laird. His half brother Ronan, now laird of clan Grant, has went off to visit his grandfather, so Shane has decided to stay in Ronan's cottage until he can be the Laird.

His first day back he meets a lass being bullied by guards. After dispatching them, he lets the lass know she is safe and he will not harm her. Shane just needs time to adjust to having to get married again due to his father's agreement with the Wallace Laird.

Lindsay Wallace, was sent in her mother's stead to help het ill aunt. Upon arrival she finds het aunt had died already but agrees to stay for awhile to help with the children. Her uncle and cousins treat her like a lowly maid, her own maid stole her clothes plus what jewels she brought, plus her father's retainers left without her. She then finds out that her father has agreed to a marriage to the new MacPherson Laird.

The old Laird married Deirdre Grant who is selfish, conniving, devious, and mean. She believes she is owed everything she wants.

What happens next is a comedy of secrets! Can Shane go thru with the marriage? Does Lindsay? What does the MacPherson family do to help? What selfish things does Deirdre do? How does Shane combat the chaos Deirdre causes?

Come join us as we watch the chaos reign, the combatants spare, and secret get revealed. Who ever said Shakespeare had all the good plots has not read much lately and would find this story plot compelling, thrilling, and humorous. I so could not wait to find out who would win.

To say more would give away too much and ruin the this enchanting story.

His Secret Highland Bride by Alison B. Hanson
Clan MacPherson Series #1

Marriage of convenience to avoid a marriage based on clan alliance filled with lies of omission and secrets kept does not set Shane and Lindsay up for smooth sailing!

What I liked:
* Shane’s rush to rescue a woman in distress
* Lindsay’s feisty strength, caring nature, and indomitable will
* Munro: blacksmith, widow, and someone willing to take in three boys in need of security
* Meeting Shane’s siblings: Alec, Ronan, and Tory – they will probably have books of their own
* The setting – love Scotland and thinking about romances there
* That it wasn’t all light and bright but in some ways more realistic due to the situation of the clans losing so much to a thief and the impact it would have
* Wondering if the thief will ultimately be caught and tried by the end of the series
* Thinking about an alliance made by Shane with the Campbells and how it will impact his brother
* That Shane and Lindsay were able to communicate fairly well until they hit a wall – glad they were able to eventually get over that hurdle
* Thinking about finding out how the couple will be doing in the future books of this series

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Times I would think, “Could this happen?” and wondering how believable it might be

Did I enjoy this book? It was okay
Would I read more in this series? I believe I would like to see what happens next

Shane MacPherson has come home again after fighting in France for 5 years alongside his step brother. Shane isn’t coming home the way he left though, having married and lost his wife within a year he is a broken man. Clan MacPherson is depending on him now that his dad is gone and his step mother has spent all the funds, it’s his turn to take his place as Laird.

Shane is dreading what he knows needs to be done so decides to live in his Step Brothers cabin in the outskirts of the village until he is ready to take his place.

Lindsay Wallace has been sent to the MacPherson clan first to help out an awful uncle raise his even more awful brood of boys after their mother dies. Her true reason for being there is her betrothal to the new MacPherson laird but she would do anything to not meet and marry him.

Lindsay meets a shy soldier back from war with deep regrets and secrets but she can’t help feeling the chemistry between them. She marries him in hopes he can love her someday and will keep her from the loveless marriage she was sure to be stuck in.

What happens when the very thing you were running away from is exactly what you’re looking for? I enjoyed this book but I didn’t love Shane’s character that much. I’m used to strong, decisive Highlanders and he was portrayed as quite weak. I would read this author again though as the story flowed well. This is a 3 star read for me.

Review of His Secret Highland Bride

Allison B. Hanson's "His Secret Highland Bride" takes readers on a captivating journey to the Scottish Highlands in 1695. From the beginning, Hanson skillfully immerses you in the lives of Shane, a returning soldier from France, and Lindsey, a laird's daughter. The narrative weaves a compelling tale of hidden identities, duty, an arranged marriage, and the complexities of grief and guilt.

The characters are well drawn, with Shane and Lindsey's evolving relationship at the heart of the story. As they navigate their secrets against the backdrop of impending war, the reader is kept wondering if they will choose duty over personal happiness.

Hanson's character development shines throughout the book, drawing readers in and leaving them eager for more. While the story is engaging, there were moments where the plot felt slightly stagnant, with a sense of circling before moving forward.

Overall, "His Secret Highland Bride" is a delightful read for fans of historical romance. Allison B. Hanson crafted a compelling story that lingered with me long after the final page.

3.5 stars. This was a pretty good book. His Secret Highland Bride is a standalone historical romance set in Scotland. Shane McPherson is back from war, a widower who must step into his new role as laird of his clan. He has some demons and puts off stepping into his new life by staying at a cabin in the forest until he is ready. He is betrothed to a woman he's never met from the Wallace clan to broker peace between the two families. While in the cabin, he meets Lindsay who is living with her mean uncle's family and being mistreated, before she too is to be married off. The two fall in love, only to find that they are betrothed to each other without knowing it. Can they trust their feelings and learn to trust each other so that they can go on to live a happy life?

The story was interesting and well written. The first half was my favorite. I found the second half to have a little too much separation and miscommunication. The "making up" came a bit too late in the story for me. Still, this was not a bad book. The story was good and kept my attention, despite it's low heat level. I enjoyed this book in general and will continue this series.

Shane McPherson and Lindsay Wallace ne Cameron well her using a false name definitely didn’t help the situation at all!
We have an abused relative helping her uncle and his 3 sons aka terrors! Who had no guidance and no examples of being a productive male! She was originally sent to care for her mother’s younger sister who has passed away! She stayed knowing her destiny was to marry into the McPherson clan.
Shane meets her and falls for her and still carries guilt and his own demons from not protecting his first wife!
They both carry secrets which ultimately will break their relationship! Their secrets affect the whole clan not just each other!
Things become more entangled with the deceit and theft from Shane’s stepmother which will take a huge part of this story!
There is a lot of pain and misunderstanding before they realize how much they mean to each other!
There are several bumps in the road so much so that it seems there can be no HEA!
There are some modern language used with older phrases that I didn’t really care for! I loved the storyline though! It definitely prizes honesty above all! Bravo! Put the past in its place and embrace your future! This should be titled Don’t lie to your present it withholding truth from your past!

It would appear that there are a lot of secrets waiting to tumble out into the open here. A wife who isn’t as she appears. A husband who isn’t quite who he says he is. A certainty that it’s not love, but it is. That’s it’s temporary, but it isn’t. And when the truths start to come out, hearts are bruised and one is broken. Can it be fixed?

Lindsay and Shane both hid their true identity from each other, but the betrayal from one cuts more and I honestly felt that pain with the wounded party. I mean, who wants to hear that an annulment is okay to pursue? Of course, Lindsay didn’t hear the rest of the conversation, but what she did hear was enough to shatter her. Except…she loves Shane. So she stays and does her best to be who everyone needs her to be (and does it wonderfully), until it seems that he is tossing her aside again. Miscommunications abound and honestly, some of that is manipulation by someone who cares but doesn’t get just how Lindsay feels.

These two both own their mistakes and they both save the day. They both find love and feel pain before coming clean. And they both make me really want more time with this family, for sure.

It’s been five years since Shane MacPherson stepped foot on his clan’s lands. Still haunted from years at war and the painful ache of loss but duty has called once again and with it, his obligation to claim his place as the new laird of Clan MacPherson. Lindsay Wallace would rather die than call the MacPherson lands her home. She just has to survive a month with her horrid uncle before being married off as a peace offering between the Wallaces and MacPhersons. The only person she can trust is a simple soldier who is strong of body and heart.
A well written romance with strong characters & a well paced slow burn story. I liked both Shane & Lindsay & l liked the chemistry between. I preferred Shane to Lindsay, he still hadn’t got over his wife’s death & felt guilt for it. Lindsay who held grudges & found it hard to forgive. There were false identities, secrets & misunderstandings which I felt went on too long & once again I was almost shouting at my kindle – talk to each other. So I was on the fence with this book but would read further books in the series

I'm an avid fan of Highlander stories, however, I found myself struggling to connect with the characters of this book. While the pacing is well-executed, the dialogue lacks emotion I usually expect. The slow burn aspect of the story is intriguing, but I was left wanting more depth and emotion.

As for Shane, he comes across as indecisive, particularly in his treatment of Lindsey. His reluctance to fight for her and his constant comparison to his first wife left me frustrated. I think it is unfair for Lindsey. Additionally, his willingness to let Lindsey leave with her father without much resistance felt so disappointing and diminishing the tension that could have added depth to the story. Despite all of these, I did appreciate the moments of intimacy between Shane and Lindsey when they were alone. Their chemistry and connection were so sweet.

This is my first book for this author, and I remain open to exploring more of her books in the future. I extend my gratitude to NetGalley, Entangled Publishing, and Allison B. Hanson for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

What happens when 2 people who were betrothed in marriage by their parents do when they meet each other incidentally without benefit of introduction? Shane McPherson, new Laird to the McPherson clan pretends to be merely a soldier returning to his clan and she Lindsay Wallace, pretends to be a member of an opposite, enemy clan just visiting to care for an ailing aunt. When Shane marries Lindsay to protect her from her relative's abuse, they have no knowledge that they are the person the other has been avoiding meeting. At first I didn't think I would like the premise of this storyline but as I kept reading I was able to appreciate the notion of two strangers who were determined to avoid marrying the person they were contractually bound to. Shane needed Lindsay to show him that he could find and love someone else despite his wanting to punish himself for the death of his first beloved wife. Lindsay needed Shane to be the love she was searching for so she no longer had to be a pawn used by her father to make an alliance with another clan. I think the ruse went on too long but it was a satisfying read

3.5 ⭐️

Shane and Lindsay are fated to marry as Shane comes back to be the laird of his clan and Lindsay’s dad has married her off to him. By sheer chance, they end up meeting, falling in love, and marrying without realizing they were supposed to marry anyways. Shane was an emotionally wounded, protective man and Lindsay was a fierce, independent woman, and together they help each other heal from past traumas.

I don’t love the keeping a huge secret trope, but I do love a good falling in love before you know you’re fated trope. The big battle toward the end was very anticlimactic - I think the whole thing lasted 3 pages despite the worry and prep taking a solid 30. But it did get them to the bigger climax of finding where their stolen money had gone, so I understand downplaying it a little.

Overall, it was a cute story, but my favorite character was the dog Tre, not one of the humans. Except maybe Tori, she was a spitfire and I’d love to see how she makes her own life turn out.

Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing/Amara for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!

I gave His Secret Highland Bride four ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you Net Galley, Entangled Publishing and Allison Hanson for this ARC to read and review. These are my honest opinions.

I normally read books that are more in depth and require thought on my part. But, every now and then, I need a good palette cleanser and I loved this book for that.

This is a romance set in the Scottish Highlands. It reminded me of older romances I’ve read, where the plot is the romance - instead of the romance being a side scene to a bigger plot. So, as a romance plot, it was perfect.

It captured my attention and held it. I got immersed in the story and the characters and really felt attached to them.

Shane and Lindsay meet, lie about who they are to each other and get married anyway. Then they fall in love with the “fake” versions of each other. What could go wrong, right?

There were secrets and some twists and turns and a really good backstory. I really enjoyed this book!

Truly Emotional Love Story:
My first time reading this author and what a treat this story was. I enjoyed both H and h characters along with the supporting cast. Their desirous attraction and their emotional struggles throughout the entire story certainly kept my interest. There were some unneeded repetitive parts which wasn't necessary. I didn't enjoy the repeating reminders of Shane and Lindsay's situation.
The story is filled with tension, heartfelt confessions, memories, a swoon worthy first kiss, fan worthy intimate scenes, many "OMG" shouts, and a villain that left me wondering?
I really did enjoy the story and this new author for me, and I will certainly look forward to reading the next book of the series
📣Special Mention to the charming dog Treun that brought much enjoyment to the story.

Shane has returned home after being out of the country for years. He's back to takeover as laird after the death of his father. But he's not quite ready for them to all know he's back yet, so he stays in his stepbrother's cottage in the woods and enjoys his peace for as long as he can. While there, he happens across a young woman who peaks his interest. Lindsay is in the country to marry the laird. The arrangement has been made with her father. But she isn't happy in the area and wants to find a way to get sent home.

Shane and Lindsay meet and are quickly drawn to one another. But they know they have other obligations - - they just don't realize that it's to each other. If only they really talked to one another, it sure would help. But it does keep things interesting in the book as they fall in love with one another and are dreading the day that their real lives catch up to them.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

I gave this book a 3.75/5 stars.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. My only negative is the secret keeping/miscommunication/not communicating throughout most of the book. Miscommunication is one of my least favorite tropes, and I felt like the secret keeping went on too long. I wish that both Shane and Lindsey would have owned up to who they really were quicker than they did.

But, that does not mean I didn't enjoy the book or the relationship between Shane and Lindsey! I adored them and that we got to see them to together and alone for most of the book. This book wasn't super steamy, but the spice we got was good. It's not very detailed or anything like that, but I thought it was sweet. Shane is very loving and caring towards Lindsey and I love how they immediately have a connection with each other.

This was an absolutely fantastic book; I can't wait for a continuation of this series! If you like Highland romance similiar to Heather McCollum this book is for you!

Shane MacPherson, a warrior and hesitant lard, returns home with a grieving heart and sense of duty. Upon arriving he meets a new arrival, Lindsay, that has secrets of their own. Can they trust each other with their secrets and find a way to love each other for who they truly are?

Both Shane and Lindsay are well rounded main characters with a storyline that made me eager to turn each page. The supporting characters were developed perfectly with the obvious intent of creating additional books that could be stand alone or read as part of a series. I will be eagerly looking to return to the MacPherson clan!

Shane Macpherson is returning from war, gone from his lands for five years , his father who ruled the clan, died and now the clan needs a leader and an arranged marriage. Shane is a widow and finds similarities in Lindsay.

Lindsay Wallace is living with her creepy uncle and Cousins who treat her more like a maid/ slave vs family. She wants to return home away from the MacPherson clan that she considers horrible and even the guards are crude and free range.

Both don’t know who the other is as they lie about their true identity, yet are suppose to be in an arranged marriage. They do have feelings for each other of “ peace” and comfort, while trying to resist the arranged marriage and marry each other first.

It is slow paced but very easy to read, believable and enjoyed the ride . I will have to look at other books by Allison B. Hanson, she has a detailed way of writing and grabs the readers.

Thank you Entangled publishing, NetGalley and Hanson for the fun read!

I was instantly transported to 1695 Scotland and found myself falling in love with a Scottish soldier within the first few pages!

If you’re a fan of cozy history romance with a bit of spice add this to your list.

The suspense from hidden identities, arranged marriage and clan conflicts kept me eagerly interested.
I read this in two sittings!

The MMC Shane while being kind, chivalrous, and loyal is keeping secrets that could tear everything apart.

The FMC Lindsey who is brave and resilient has secrets of her own.

This book had me feeling all the feels and I would recommend it to anyone.

Thank you NetGalley and Entangled PublishingLLC for providing me with an ARC of this book. All opinions of this book are my own.

It’s been a while since I have read such an engaging historical romance! Well done Allison Hanson. From the “meet cute” if you want to call it that, Shane - the Scottish Laird and Lindsey, a noblewoman begin the slow burn. This book had it all. First, an arranged marriage nobody wants, but only the reader knows the identities and the plan.. Sadness from the past and the future. Evil plots, lying, angst…oh the angst and romance of course peppered with a whole lotta heat. Even some moments of joy are brought to you by the dog Treun.

Was a great read, something constantly happening whether it’s deadly plots or wild passion. Worth your time, I know I couldn’t put it down!

Thanks to Entangled Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

His Secret Highland Bride is the first historical highlander book I remember reading written by Allison B. Hanson. I have enjoyed reading some of contemporary romantic suspense books. She brings her same style and attention to character development in this historical romance story. This is a character focused story with secrets between the two main characters.

I liked the characters, Shane and Lindsay and understand heir desire to control their destiny. Family loyalty and responsibilities seemed to get in their way. If only there had not been secrets but then there wouldn’t be a story. Friendship forms and then more, with some open bedroom door scenes. An enjoyable read with a reader trip back to the time of arranged marriages to keep peace among the clans.

A venture into historical romance with Allison B Hanson.

This book jumps right in on the action! Lindsay and Shane both kept their secrets but they were drawn to each other and fate also seemed on board with the plan! Shane was tormented by his past but couldn’t resist his feelings for Lindsay and her strength to be all he needed.

The spice was a 1 for me. But the story was great! It kept me wanting to see how the secrets unfolded and wanted to see the HEA.

I also see the draw to wanting to see if Ronan and Alec get their stories told! Great read and I would read more!

Thank you to entangled publishing for the e-arc and letting me review this book.
