Considering the book is named One Has to Die and opens with a trigger warning for character death, I was so nervous and on edge, worrying about who was going to die, that I had the hardest time focusing on anything going on during the book at points. I can't remember the last time I was this anxious to know who was going to die and on edge. Probably going to have to go back and reread it, just because my mind was spinning out of control so much.
Then, when the book actually got to the character death scene, I had to put down the book and walk away. I knew someone was probably about to die, still didn't know who, but I had so much nervous energy that I just had to walk away. In case it wasn't clear above, I absolutely loved the book. Only reason I couldn't focus, I was very worried about who was going to die.

He really just called it One Has to Die, didn't he?
Book three opens with the “you're welcome” of a hotel room. With the title in the back of my mind, however, the first chapter felt a lot like when I butter my cats up with treats before a trip to the vet, except that where they’ll be oblivious until the day they die, I have the capacity for suspicion. While my eyes were reading about the closest to “golden retriever Dorian” we’ve seen so far, my own psychic manifestation was tracking the slow rise of the guillotine blade.
It’s masterful writing: it would be obvious to build suspense with spooky corridors and shadowy characters (those do come soon enough), but to do it with smiles and...other happy ways one might engage a mouth? And even such an audacious title holds so much ambiguity and nuance, when you realize everyone it could imply from the first two books, that I couldn’t have told you precisely what it threatened as I dove in.
And yet, it was still a promise.
But for whom? The biggest thing about this series that still leaves me awestruck is M.N. Bennet's creation of a massive, fully-developed ensemble. Dorian's students aren't tropes, but rather entire, fully-realized characters, each as rich as our favorite horny protagonists. To tell this story is to juggle with about two dozen balls, keeping them all in perfectly-coordinated flight over the course of three books, when they could collapse into chaos or a more trivial version of the feat with the tiniest lapse of attention. Instead, I want them all to be my friends, because they are so rich, complex, dynamic, and vibrantly human that I can genuinely forget they’re fictional characters in a novel at times. Whenever the class erupts in bursts of thought, I remain amazed that I can tell you exactly which character said each unattributed line of dialogue. It is so much fun to spend time with Dorian, very-nearly-horny-on-main-if-he-weren’t-fully-aware-his-PR-team-would-eviscerate-him Enchanter Evergreen, and the students with their hormones, imaginative magic, and nearly constant dick jokes. (Thank you, Gael, for asking the question that has been on all our minds. We're still waiting for an answer, Jamius. But we all know.)
But one has to die.
No lie, he ain’t kidding, and it hurts when it happens. What follows is the next masterwork of the novel: grief. Not just the main characters’, but also everyone else’s — all the other enchanters, students, and teachers we’ve come to love. Do you know what twenty completely different people processing trauma looks like? It looks like twenty completely different things, and while I can’t imagine how exhausting it must have been to write, it’s precisely the emotional aftercare I needed as a reader following the death. It would have been easy to simply wallow or to gloss over it, as some weaker writers might. But the dozens of different portraits of life after death, of surviving, of remembering, of figuring out how to live with loss are somehow even more beautiful than watching all those dozens of characters casting magic in concert. I think it's my favorite thing about Dorian being our way into these novels: what draws you in isn’t the sparkles but the depth of heart.
(Not that Dorian would publicly admit to having one.)
If I had to pick something to criticize, it would be that the resolution of the “final battle” felt somewhat cursory after how hard both sides had been stubbornly digging their heels in to get us to that point. On the other hand, it felt not like lazy writing but like Bennet signaling that the conflict isn’t truly finished, an impression magnified by the implications of the epilogue-like final chapter. And indeed, this book is not the conclusion of a trilogy. The countdown has reached zero.

Another banger!! If you know me, you know I am always yapping about these books. The Branches of Past and Future is one of my all time favorite series I LOVE THEM.
These books only get better and better, and this one does not pull its emotional punches.
The story follows an arc set up in the beginning of the series, a really masterful work on telling the next step in the series while maintaining fresh takes. Because so much is built on the first two books, I don’t wanna give away too much plot, but you should know there are some great, hard earned warm and fuzzy scenes between Milo and Dorian as they continue to build their relationship.
This one also maintains and builds on the incredible cast of side characters, adding a few new names to the mix (I love you, Vik). The BANTER the INTERACTIONS the DIRTY PUNS I love all of them. Honestly the emotional depth and uniqueness of each of the side characters is amazing. There’s also more revealed about the magic system and individual branches (powers) which I loved so much. I wanna know everything. It also continued on the staple of the series of using the magic system to create some out of the box scenarios and to tell the story in a really unique way that I absolutely adore. The series is technically one person POV, but Dorian’s telepathy is utilized in such a way that you really get the chance to see so many perspectives while still being grounded in that singular, adorably grumpy character.
I’ve made the comparison before, and I’ll make it again, if you like X-Men, you will love this series. The way it tackles large scale, systemic issues through the perspective of individuals and their interactions with the world is very X-Men. Professor X and his Institute, and Gemini Academy, are immoral and you can’t change my mind. Really what I love so much about these books is that we’re dealing with these ethical quandaries surrounding societal issues like systemic poverty, and individual issues like guilt and grief, and how they’re all intertwined in our struggles to not only survive but thrive. And somehow it’s still really fun! Like yes this book broke my heart but I had I had a great time during it!!

M.N. Bennet has created a complex and richly developed world of magic and learning in his Branches of Past and Future series that suffuses everything the characters do. I was immediately absorbed back into this world, and after the twist at the end of the last book, was primed for a serious showdown. Knowing that the title of the book would come to fruition only heightened the sense of dread and anticipation.
The romance is, as usual, a B plotline, but the author weaves it well within the major storyline. There’s a really nice balance between the two. And it’s great to see all the major secondary characters, mostly Dorian’s homeroom coven, as they grow and learn. The characters add real depth to the story, and it’s a wild ride from start to finish.
Once again, the book ends with a bit of a twist, and once again, all is not as it seems. I’m a big fan of this author and his storytelling, and I’m very much looking forward to what happens next in the series.

One Has to Die
One Has to Die is the third book in the Branches of Past and Future Magic series by MN Bennet.
In this book, we are following Dorian after the end of the events last year. Considering the title and warning, I was on edge at the start of the book, but the build-up is spot on, and I cannot fault it. I have loved returning to this series and following the cast of colourful characters. The character's death had me in a chokehold, and I cried. Having had a significant impact on all the others even if some hide it, and I have also enjoyed seeing how other characters have reacted to this. Additionally, I love the banter Dorian has with his students and Milo. The end of this book has a sort of twist, and not all as it seems. I cannot wait to dive into the next part of this series.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If you read the second book, you're familiar with the Doppler plot. It's resolved in this one. This is the most twisty and turny, if that's a word, book I've read in a long time. The author does a great job with this and it could easily be the end to the series. However, we still have another semester left in the school year, and Dorian does not abandon his kids.
One note-this is the darkest book so far and the spiciest.
My reviews are generally much much longer, but there's so much going on and I really don't want to spoil anything. If you're enjoying the series, you'll love this book.

Ohhh the twists and turns, this is pretty good!
This is prolly as good as the second book and I'm actually surprised how addicted I got especially towards the end.
Plot: A new semester starts, Dorian comes up with new teaching plans, that is to ask Milo's acolytes to help train his students, where they all failed. On the other end is Doppler Dorian, imprisoning the chimera and Finn, wanting to keep Finn alive and eventually replace the original Dorian to live the happily ever after HE deserves with Finn and Milo, after he separates the chimera from Finn of course. News flash, evil Dorian fails, and got trapped inside the chimera instead along with Finn. The chimera kills Jamie, then Jamie's sister Lena who is also Milo's acolyte, came to kill the chimera. Where she failed but Milo came and together with Finn and fake Dorian from the inside (unwittingly), they banish the chimera together. Fake Dorian and Finn both died into an unknown space, where they met the shattered soul of Jamie, Fake Dorian and Finn decided to stay together and formed their own relationship!! Whilst helping Jamie find his missing memories and soul.
I'm so glad to have gotten known the acolytes better! Hayden really is perfect crush material?? Having infinte supply of sparkles, who shows his own shortcomings and vulnerabilities to comfort others, always trying to see the best of things but protective of his friends and will get angry on their behalf. AND, the best is that he brings you up to the sky and tells you to scream your frustrations out cause that's so cringe but it works for him. Idk I feel like Hayden's actully more apprachable than Milo Evergreen cause Milo is always perfect in face of dangers and doesn't really let his feelings show unless it's the annoying Enchanter Evergreen's smile or the more genuine love confessions for Dorian.
Oh Dorian, he's actully doing very well this semester, I'm so proud of how far my emo baby's coming along, he's trying. I mean, I get that he's all sour and dour, but don't tell me how not one of his students think he's hot, why is everyone fawning over Enchanter Evergreen instead? He managed to give some really inspirational speaches to several of his homeroom coven students (Kenzo and Katherine) aand trying to help Jamie get along with others. Dorian's really just the world's biggest softie.
He's harsh cause he cares about his students, and trying his best to prepare them for the outside world so they wouldn't make the same mistakes he did and go through that much heartbreak. First lesson being how to fail? He's the best. Although the fail part didn't really register in Kenzo's mind until the party with Jamie's death.
Jamie! He definently didn't really deserve an redemption arc though Bennet still did it cause he's nice and it kinda ties thing together really well. He's trying and would've eventually succeeded to get better but sadly it's just not meant to be. I love what he ended up though, with Doppler Dorian and Fragment Finn. Finding their way in that infinte space beyond death.
To sum up, I liked the characters and plot, although it had skimmed through parts of the student's developments and not much going on academically, overall it's a pretty good book! I will definently read the fourth one coming out in a few days!

I was not ready for all this sadness.
The last book really ended with a cliffhanger and this third book follows up right from that point. Dorian still feels like everything is going okay, while his manifestation is plotting big plans not caring about any of the consequences except for his happiness. Dorian and the manifestation are sort of the same person, but at the same time they weren't. They really felt like different sides of the same person, similar, but also distinctly different in a way could always tell who's POV I was reading. I feel like this was done very masterfully. In a way that totally made it make sense and avoided any confusion for the reader. It was for sure one of the things that made this book so great.
Dorian's chapters were quite happy this book. He keeps growing immensely in his emotional well being, has good sweet moments with Milo, and gives a lot of positive classes to his kids. His manifestation though, those were really intense chapters with a lot of plot. Dorian's chapters were the needed breathers between the deep sadness and cruelty of the manifestations life. This split in how the chapters felt made for a very nice flow of the story that helped me get through the book. I definitely had moments where I put down my ereader while in the manifestations chapters, just to mentally take a second to process all that was going on. Those chapters were a lot, but a lot in a good way that gripped me to keep reading.
The students of this series still are one of the best and bright highlights of the books. It's extremely fulfilling to see them grow, become stronger, become more mature, while at the same time giving a lot of teenage jokes to enjoy. They give these books moments where I snorted out loud, laughing about a joke trying to tell my friends what happened in the book. I started caring about these students almost as much as Dorian cares for them (don't worry he still comes up top). They add so much to this book I can't image this series without them.
Concluding this book is a masterful third book that is both very light and very dark and I can't wait to read how this story continues.

I started caring about these students almost as much as Dorian cares for them (don't worry he still comes up top). They add so much to this book I can't image this series without them.
Concluding this book is a masterful third book that is both very light and very dark and I can't wait to read how this story continues.

I just finished this beauty today, and I've got to say, I loved this book so much. My heartstrings were tugged throughout the entire thing in such a melodious, grief-inducing, heart-warming, edge-of-my-seat, addicted-to-what-I-was-reading kind of way. I could not describe what this story made me feel even if I tried.
Going point by point on the things I loved, I need to start my review by talking about Dorian: my lovely, frustrating, infuriating Dorian. It's been three books since we were first introduced to little Dorian and all of the quirky ways he handles his life, and it's been such a ride to see him go from a sour old grump of a man to a still-rough-around-the-edges but trying-his-best, kind, thoughtful guy. I feel like his character arc really reached a new high in this book. Seeing him hopeful and excited about the future for a change gave me such a heartwarming feeling, and I literally couldn't believe what I was reading. His character progression felt so real and natural; I would not have been surprised to learn the author used their real-life experience as inspiration to write the character development. 20/10 on that front.
Milo, oh my sweet Milo, always the smart-ass, always ten steps ahead of everyone, even when things are actively hiding themselves from his insight. I swear, if I could be like anyone, I would wish to be like Enchanter Evergreen. He's the definition of having everything figured out. The way this man can multitask and balance everything he's got on his plate continues to amaze me. I swear, if you were looking for the definition of perfection, look no further. Normally, this would cause me to want to see him knocked down a few pegs, but, sincerely, there isn't a single envious bone in my body for this guy.
Oh, the children, THE CHILDREN! THEY'VE GROWN SO MUCH from the first time we saw them. Every new chapter is a testament to their resilience and intelligence. The amount of queer representation in that group of kids warms my heart, and the acceptance everyone displays makes for an amazing read.
Overall, I loved this book so much. It kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

One Has to Die is the third book in M.N. Bennet's Branches of Past and Future series which tells the story of Dorian, a teacher at a magical high school, and his many talented students. Dorian's past is not without tragedy, including the loss of Finn, his friend and lover, but he has slowly come to terms with his grief and is starting to enjoy his life, and especially his new relationship with Milo, a.k.a. Enchanter Evergreen, one of the most popular and famous witches in the land. He's also got his hands pretty full with his talented if occasionally wayward students as he tries to prepare them for the testing that will rank them and impact their futures as guild witches. What he doesn't know is that one of his manifestations has taken on a life of its own and is using Dorian's memories and his powers to try to get the happy ending with Finn that he thinks they both deserve, no matter the cost to anyone else. Will Dorian discover what is going on in time to save himself, and his students?

One Has To Die is the third book in the Branches of Past and Future series and pics up in the new semester following the Devil attack, seriously can’t these kids get a break?
The cliffhanger of book sees Dorian’s manifestation break off and hide himself in the mind of a plain, unassuming witch while he plots a way to free Finn, banish the devil forever and take over Dorian’s life, believing this to be only way for the Three Meant To Be to live the life together they were destined to.
This semester is about Dorian preparing his students to apply for internships at the local guilds, setting them up for a future in the industry.
As Dorian and Mills relationship moves to the next level, he begins to break down his barriers and lets Milo in (both literally and figuratively 😏). While Milo continues to balance a heavy workload, interest from the Global Guild in the aftermath of his banishment of the Devil, he notices something skirt his visions, the first sign of something to come.
What follows is the manifestations plan moving and failing, the kids exploring more of their identities and grumpy Dorian becoming slightly less grumpy.
While I enjoyed seeing how all off of this played out after the end of the last book, I found that it seemed to drag on a bit. I understand that there were scenes here that needed to happen, but it took a while to get to some of the action and revelations.
In my mind it wasn’t really until Gaels party that things picked up, and the pieces started coming together. But in saying that, I did appreciate how the different forms of grief played out in the wake of this. And how it brought some of the students together again.

This was a wonderful experience. It had much of what I enjoyed from the previous books. The stakes were high, the sense of dread looming was heavy, but in a wonderful way. The additional Doppler pov added intrigue and a fresh perspective to the story that I appreciated. His arc in this story was spectacular…and the ending? I’m intrigued.
Always love the time spent with the students, the cast of this series is just a strong one. Chanelle continues to be my absolute favorite side character, more Chanelle in the next book, please! I think a strong point of this series in particular is just how well it manages to balance the cast without any of them fading into the background too much. I really feel like I got a good feel for all of them after the first book, and I only learn more about them in every subsequent installment, this one being no different.
I adore Dorian as our central character, I think he’s unlike your typical fantasy main character, and I just connect with him. So, having read the other two in the series, I am going to try not to spoil anything, so apologize if it sounds bland.
This third entry, just like the first and second (which you should read…well need to before this one) is excellent. Wish the series can get more attention. It has the same laugh out loud humor and I could really relate to the characters on different aspects of life and such.
Anyways, the characters again are well thought out and developed, from the main character Dorian, Milo (who I want to steal), the students, and even more minor characters. I like how lots of thought were put into these characters, like even through a character was a total jerk, there is so much dimension to the character. Same with the plot, writing, etc. Things wrapped up nicely in all three books, but I have a feeling things aren’t completely over and it left some things open for maybe something else? - which is fine with me. I was satisfied through.
I remember seeing the title of this like “Oh No!”, but do not be scared to read it, because it’s still good. I never was bored in any of the books in the series, but I am such an anxious reader, always ready for the action. The book is a good length, not short, more on the average-long side, but an easy read.

I really liked this, but I’ve also got some mixed feelings for it. On one hand, I felt like the first half of the book was a lot slower paced than I was expecting. There were some moments and chapters that felt really long and drawn out and others were I just wanted to linger a bit longer. And on the other hand, I really enjoyed getting to see Dorian struggling with his feelings in the second half. The angsting over your relationships and whether or not you’re doing a good enough job at your job, it was so good!
I loved getting to see the absolute chaos that Dorian’s students always seem to get into. They’re always a riot! I also really liked that Dorian and Milo were more together and a whole lot more involved with each other in this book. The ways that they got closer through the whole book were really sweet and I loved the lovingly way that they poked at each other. I also really enjoy the very last chapter that functioned as a sort of epilogue for Jamie, the fragmented piece of Finn’s soul, and Dorian’s manifestation. It was a really nice way to end this book.
Overall, this was a good read even if I had some issues with the pacing. One Has To Die is getting four stars from me!

I enjoyed both of the first two books in this series and looked forward to what the heck was going on with the ending of the second one. M.N. Bennet does not disappoint - the further adventures of Dorian, Milo, and the gang kept me on the edge of my seat.
This story is told from three points of view and for me, there's a bit too much time spent in the third POV. I wanted to get to the meat of the story. It was still thoroughly enjoyable reading, make no mistake. I love the students and the entire ensemble cast.
Heed the trigger/content warnings, as there are a few parts that get pretty dark and graphic. Also, since Dorian and Milo are an established couple, it's more of an urban fantasy action-adventure story with romantic overtones. There's only a little spice, but for me, the story was strong enough without it - and I don't think it really needed more than it has.
You do need to read the prior two books before this one or you won't understand what's going on. I am eager for next semester!

I really like MN Bennet and his series Branches of past and future and I am really excited for the fourth book coming next year. I enjoyed this story and the plot with Dorian's Doppler was very interesting. That being said the book was quite lengthy at 455 pages and the pacing slowed down a bit now and then, of course when things went down, oh boy did the plot picked up! I didn't disliked the "slower" parts because I truly love all interactions between Dorian and Milo and the students themselves are also interesting and not just plot devices to keep the story going. I just feel like maybe a bit could've been trimmed down, like some repetition on Tara's ocean, for example. Still I loved this book and can't recommend MN Bennet'd books enough.

My favorite installment in the series so far! Honestly I had a bit of a rocky start with this series, but it has really grown on me with each book. I may have to go back and reread at least book 1 to see how I feel about it a second time around. I loved to see Dorian finding his peace and growing with Milo, and I hope the full extent of Dorian’s magic that was alluded to in this book will be revealed in the next. The rogue Manifestation was an interestingly nefarious character, but I do wish we’d gotten to see a Dorian vs Doppler Dorian confrontation, which is why I didn’t give this 5 stars.

Self published because it’s so off the rails nobody would publish it? Or so clearly BNHA now there’s no turning back? Weirdly it took until this one to feel guilty I was giving money to this. You can tell in the copy-editing it’s self published. It feels like the last book, but the copy’s POV is cheesy. Also it feels like having your cake and eating it too, by having the fake version of Dorian make the bad decisions so the real one can stay pure but both plots happen. It’s also unclear why the devil is obsessed with Dorian except that he’s the main character. There’s just a fanfic vibe to his personality and specialness.
Perhaps you’re wondering why I’m still reading but I really do like that the story is about losing your third and coming to terms with it. Also I can’t look away and I have to know.

I’m doing my best to write this without spoilers, as the story really deserves to be experienced on its own terms— at this point in the series (gentle note that it is a part o a series, so definitely start at the beginning if you haven’t already) it’s ridiculously easy to be invested in the characters. I spent the entire narrative here on a knife’s edge of anticipation, and I mean that in the best possible way: there’s darkness and peril and high stakes as well as so many other things— well worth a read.

All the yeses! I loved this book! Dorian is still my favorite! I was so nervous about the death! I love that along with Dorian and Milo, we also get to see the students flourish! M.N. Bennet does so well with character development and coming up with all the magic branches! I really want to see how Dorians' magic evolves!
I could really feel the love Dorian and Milo have for each other. The smexy scenes with them were great!
I'm really looking forward to seeing where the story goes next!

OMG this book was beyond exceptional! I totally love this series but this book just blew me away! I don't want to give away any spoilers and if you want to know what it is about read the blurb! I highly recommend you read the previous books. All I can say is that I was literally on the edge of my seat and devoured it as I couldn't put it down! Now added to my top 10!

This was an absolutely fantastic continuation of Dorian and Milo's emotionally fraught journey. This entire cast of characters keep me coming back for more because I am so invested in seeing how it all plays out for them. Dorian learns that suppression doesn't make emotions and feelings go away, sometimes it just makes them angry and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Didn't see that coming
I liked how this third book turned out. I really thought this was gonna be a trilogy and was prepared to end the series with this book. But apparently not and I'm very ok with more as the villain from book two is still around so I'm excited to see what's going to happen next. Nevertheless I was kinda rooting for Jamie. And was so bummed at his demise. I like the new characters a lot too.

This part of the story is so far the most tense and emotional for me. The mystery of why Dorian can no longer use part of his power has simply stunned me, and the further narrative has been building up in pace. I still enjoy watching the students grow, how they cope with their internal and external problems. I have been very worried for them, they have faced so many difficulties in this book.

This installment has so much emotion. I was in suspense of who was going to be gone I could not stop reading yet kept wanting to stop. All of the students in this series are so integral and I felt like I honestly connect with so many of them. Dorian is our POV, but his abilities give us so much range and depth into everyone's feelings. An intense read full of anticipation.

This series doesn't let you down. I'm so obsessed with this series and the third installment was wonderful. The way it dealt with the consequences of book 2 and tje further character development really.made this an enjoyable read.

Enjoy this author. Even though it is a series, it has new information instead of rehashing the old. Characters are unique. No confusion as to who is speaking. Will continue reading this author. (I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.)
