"I Hope You'll Have a Horrible Life" is a first-person novel following a narcissistic middle-schooler that gets forced into a ridiculous task by a seemingly supernatural being—the Devil itself. Barely attending school and spending all his time relying on energy drinks for any motivation, the task of dominating the world ends up as the last thing on Johan's mind—the things that end up plaguing him end up being the breadcrumbs of his own actions, as he finds himself constantly terrorizing both his school and classmates through things such as stalking, manipulation, and even violence.
A self-introspective novel that preaches very little—watch the story unfold in a demented manner of someone that has no qualms over committing atrocities to society; frequent themes of the story concern both cyber and physical bullying, large-scale manipulation, many types of substance use, suicide topics, and even homicide. "I Hope You'll Have a Horrible Life" is strictly not a read for the faint-hearted.
The story is told like a puzzle—repeatedly you're prompted by your own confusion to re-read to properly understand things (a few author notes are included to make it easier), with many narratives and time-lines constantly being at play. The style isn't traditional whatsoever—a unique stylistic approach is used, which is unique to the book and the author; pauses of the mind and speech, sentence-separation dictating your pace, lack of clarification on who's speaking—all deliberate choices by the author for the purpose of its readability being precisely as intended.
