For the first time ever, Van has to deliver the remains of fallen comrades. At the Starsmith, he’s presented with an opportunity to change the face of the war, even as Torina and Van begin planning for the ultimate shift in their
Parenthood.
But first, the crew must prepare for an unexpected gift-- a new, unknown fleet of ships, uncrewed and hidden deep out in the black.
There’s just one problem. They have the ships, but they need pilots and a secret base to create their fleet. For that job, they’ll need an ally of unparalleled strength.
The Schegith Protectorate.
With friends, and a little time, Van and his AI friends create a plan so bold it will take them into the heart of Yotov’s web—and far from anyone who can help them. Earth hangs in the balance, and the fight for humanity’s future will take place among the stars.
JUST ONE HIT AFTER ANOTHER, AND THEY JUST KEEP COMING. WHAT A GREAT BOOK IN A GREAT SERIES.
With both old and new enemies coming out of every shadow, beneath every rock, on every planet, and every known star system in the galaxy, Van, Torina, Perry, Netty, Netty-P, Icky, and Rab struggle and fight their way to just try to stay alive to fight the evil set loose on the galaxy be Yotov and her flunkies of the Guild, those of the Equal Grasp, and now the Firm.
With huge bounties placed on their heads, "dead or alive," they are really getting tired of running from their foes and are finally making headway at obtaining resources and finalizing plans to bring the fight to their rivals.
Hand of Fate (Backyard Starship Book 21) by J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert is one of those books and series that rarely come along that will not only hit the top of the current charts for the best new releases but will go down as one of the all time greats.
As always, this book and series is very well written, the characters are established, thrilling, full of action, and suspense, and let's not forget, funny as hell at times. If you're a science fiction nut, an action-packed story junkie, or just want to read a very good book and series, this book and series is tailored just for you.
I really have enjoyed this book and series and hope you will find yourself enjoying it as much as I have.
Quotes from "Hand of Fate" by J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert:
"Justice is not about a logo, nor is it about belonging to an organization. Justice is natural, innate to this world."
"We most often do not get to choose the circumstances we face, the trials we must endure. Our only choice is how we confront them."
"We're going on the offensive, and we're howling for vengeance."
Have a feeling this story arc is about over, but it has been a great series. Love the characters the stories and the ideas behind it. Gotta say the whole twist on the AI will enslave us to the AImwill be set free is a nice alternative.
The penultimate installment of our protagonist's adventures. He's been exiled from the Peacekeepers and they've been taken over by a bunch of crooked cops. Can our hero overthrow them and build something better? Probably! However, it's cool to see Van and Turina on the back foot. It's still a lighthearted series but this is darker than most installments.
So, Van Tudor is no longer a Peacemaker, Master or otherwise! Yeah, that’s were the story ended in the last book. He made a huge tactical error in his attempt to attack and destroy a Equal Grasp convoy out near Wolf 424. That attack resulted in the loss of the battleship *Iowa* which had been crewed by many Conoku, children of Linulla. Van and his crew are now on Starsmith to deliver nineteen boxes, i.e., coffins containing the departed Conoku. To say that Van and the rest of his crew were torn with guilt would be an understatement. Van didn’t even know if Linulla would even want to talk to him, but he was going to at least make sure these young Conoku were returned home.
Fortunately, for Van, Linulla, while definately saddened with the lost of so many young Conoku, knew that they were adults that had chosen to serve aboard the *Iowa* knowing full well the consequences of going into battle. So Linulla didn’t have any resentment towards Van and understood that Tudor would be suffering for this loss as well of a number of other friends that were killed in the battle. He even offered Van the support to use Starsmith as a home base now that he was actually wanted by the Peacemaker Guild.
Yet, Van knew that he couldn’t stay in one place. They now were not only wanted by the Peacemakers, but also members of the Equal Grasp. That criminal organiaztion was now only growing stronger while the Guild appeared to be coming apart at the seams. Yotov was now know to be the mastermind behind the Equal Grasp on Earth and she was also pulling strings on Anvil Dark slowly putting her supporters in ever powerful positions. Van had to do something, but he didn’t have a clue as to what.
But first they had to asset what they didn’t have to work with. They did have a small, very stealthy ship called the *Prowler* given to them by Groshenko. It could allow them to approach places and people that otherwise they couldn’t reach without being blasted in to dust. But, that ship, the *Fafnir* and the *Frankie* were all they had to move around in. So they headed to Shhh, the hidden planet which they did have some sort of base to work out of, but it didn’t have many supplies or equpipment they were going to need. They didn’t even have a place to refuel any of their ships so traveling was going to be very difficult if that problem wasn’t solved. They needed a plan and a break even if it was something minor that went their way.
They finally decided they couldn’t just sit on Shhh if they were going to get rid of their enemies. Food was one of the primary needs of all the crew, except of coure the AIs, and food was plentiful on Earth. So that’s where they were going. Van needed to find out if everyone on Earth was doing Ok and staying out of trouble with the Equal Grasp. He also wanted to demonstrate that while he might be down, he was not out and was still going to have the Equal Grasp pay for their crimes.
They also had a list of missing or stolen goods and ships that the Guild had been working on for quite some time. Each of the items on this list was valuable to someone who was willing to pay a bounty to have them recovered or the items themselves were valuable. Some had been on the list for so long that the original owners might not be alive so whatever was found would be the property of the founder. The Fafnir began looking for some of these items and was having some luck initially, but the stuff they were finding just didn’t bring in that much in bonds. Yet, there was one individual that was on the list with a 200,000 bond bounty. He seemed to have been implicated in several murders but was quite elusive to find. But with Netty, Netty-P and Perry working on searching databases around the galaxy, they sound found his probably location. The guy they found turned out to be a dupe of the Equal Grasp, but he was a very wealthy dupe. He did offer Van quite a sum to allow him to go on his way with the promise that he wouldn’t be working for the Equal Grasp any longer. That suited Van since he knew the guy was just being framed and was really harmless, so they let him go, but not before getting his money.
They started hitting other things on the list of lost and stolen items and eventually came across items that seemed to have been strategically placed so they could be retrieved at some later day. One such place was a fuel depot that also had a secret storage compartment with some very valuable chips and bonds. Plus once the hacked into the fuel depot system, they had instant access to larger quantities of fuel for their ships. This was a win-win for Van and his crew. It was more so because this fuel depot also belonged to the Equal Grasp who had just lost a great deal of their assets. Van and his crew were going for more and this was going to hurt the Equal Grasp a great deal.
But, at the same time, Van was getting concerned with the happenings at Anvil Dark and with the Guild. Still, he found a lot of his former associates more than willing to help him out. They also didn’t like what was happening on Anvil Dark so most were staying away from the place. Van came up with an idea that required them to infiltrate the fortress so he could release a number of AIs that were locked into the Guild by their programming. If he could release these AIs, then they might give him the army he needed to take down the Equal Grasp and then do something to fix or remake the Guild into the organization it was supposed to be.
This was going to take a tremendous effort, but Van was finding out that they people he had previously helped were more than willing to return the favor. But, one thing he knew that had to be done immediately was to return Torina to her homeworld so she could eventually have their child(children). She was in no shape to go into harms way. Even she knew that.
This series is building up to something. Van finds himself at the center of all that is going on and he has plans on how he wants to get things done. Yet, his the bounty on his head placed by the Equal Grasp is growing alarmingly large. Will one of his “friends” finally succumb to the lure of such a high bounty? Maybe we’ll find out in the book 22, “Bright Red Line, now available on Amazon.
Now on the run, Van comes up with a way to fight back...
After being thrown out of the Guild when he fell into Yotov's trap, Van is now isolated and on the run. To make matters worse, a bounty has been placed on him and his crew and all of his known haunts are being watched. Fortunately, they have their stealth ship which allows them to investigate areas before they arrive in the Fafnir. While for much of this book they are on the defensive, trying to evade capture, certain revelations and discoveries allow them to hit back in small ways. They come up with a big plan that involves penetrating the unpenetratable Anvil Dark, which seems impossible until another discovery is made... Things seem desperate, but events occur that give the Fafnir crew hope of eventually succeeding in overthrowing the corrupted Guild and thoughts turn to what will happen once they are successful. A grim, but fun, entertaining read that leaves you eager to find out what happens next.
This book takes the story a long way in just a few hundred pages, much more.progress made than in previous book and the series needed it Van starts to realise his.place.in this whole adventure and his crew and friends seem to constantly remind him of such Whilst there are moments of sadness in all the books, overall the impression is one of hope and progress, this book however seems to air on the side of melancholy with moments of hope Still a great series and I can it ending.in the next 2 to 3 books, but it will very.much worth the effort and time.to get there
I still enjoy the story, characters and humour - these are the things that make this series easy and quality reading for me.
Even the running references to films and music lighten the book for me.
As usual, it's quite time: Icky said, offering Funboy a hand for a high five. He looked at it, then sighed, extracted a disinfecting wipe, and swiped it across her palm, before tapping it with his own. “No offense intended,” he said. Icky rolled her eyes and scowled at him. “Now how could I possibly take offense at that?”
If it is a trap, and that is a fully armed and operational battle station, I wanna be able to do the Kessel run in a lot less than three parsecs.” Rab gave me a look. “Kessel? Where’s that? Van, what the hell are you talking about?” “Never mind.”
“Well, that’s what trusted subordinates are for, right?” I said. “Being sacrificed to achieve bigger things.” I found myself at the focus of many silent stares. I grinned. “Present company excepted, of course.” Rab smiled back at me. “Thanks for adding that, boss. We appreciate it.”
Having now read the last five in one sitting, I've got a painful wait for the next and final round in this series. Bring them on.
So this book starts off a bit slow. Im fact for a bit I was worried I would have to give it a 4 star rating. About 1/4 of the way through though I realized the story needed this slow part to set up the direction it was turning. At this point the story also took off again. It was once again the exciting while still well thought out and written story we have come to expect in the Chaneyverse. Both authors really put everything they have into this book as the story rolled forward and evolved. The ending left me wanting more, I immediately got the next book and will be starting it as soon as this review is done. Mr Maggert and Mr. Chaney you outdid yourselves
As others have stated, it's been a good ride but the story is about over. Though it's 420 pages, it reads like it's about a hundred and fifty. When you finish it and look back, you wonder what exactly happened. Not much really. If you would ask me three books ago if I was ready for this series and I would have told you absolutely not. Now, I am. It's been an amazing ride but it's time to wrap it up. I'm just not sure how he is going to answer so many hanging questions and left over suggestions of things that could happen in the future from the story arc. But we'll see.
This series by J.N.Chaney and Terry Matters has been a page turner from the first book on to this last one. I can't wait for it to happen. I read a lot and I have already jumped a head in the other books I read. Its just this is so good, and it's hard to wait. Please treat yourself to a good read and start this series. You will also want to read the spending off books as well. The same on the edge of your set experience will happen to you. please find them and start readinf.
Another wonderfully detailed account of the BYSS Crew and their family and friends around the galaxy, and beyond. This Series of Books to me is the best, and I have been reading Science Fiction written by the best for over 50 years. JN Channey and Terry Maggert have done everyone a great service by writing this, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys Science Fiction. This series Rocks!
I can see the end is near. But I can not wait for the story to continue! I hope it never ends, and the adventures of Van and Torina go on and on. So many possibilities. It also seems like one family of friends are trying to save the universe. And look, they have already started saving the AI's from slavery! I look forward to the next book and pray it's not the last! Thanks guys!
If I've continued to read the series past 20 books, then I find it worthwhile. That's it. I don't think Mr. Chaney needs my accolades in any case. I just want to know how he manages to release so many books (there are other series as well) even with co-authors. I wonder if he writes any of them, but just frames up the stories and pairs with one of his many collaborators. That's not a knock at all. I'd like to know how it's done.
Well, the story threads are starting to gather into one. Pieces are being assembled, other bases touched, and Van’s plans known. Chaney has assembled the ingredients in a marvelous way, anticlimactic as it were, and the Guild cleansing, team building, good deeds being called in, climax is about to start. Guess we’ll have more characters sacrificed, enemies destroyed, and galactic justice performed. Cannot wait!
Tudor Team finds themselves on the dark side of the Guild as the evil forces manage to strike back at them for all the disruptive actions that they have used to reveal secret agreements and bribes that are about to destroy any similarities to a working government enforcing laws against scheming criminals about to take over the control of space.
The worldbuilding continues to be amazing with believable non-humans (Linulla and his kids are always a heartwarming bright spot). Funboy is great...actually the whole crew and supporting cast are wonderful. Hope is the constant undercurrent of Hand of Fate. I recommend starting with book 1 (I'm so glad this is a KU series).
As always the Backyard Starship and its crew made it through a nail biting edge of your chair experience. Chaney/Matters have done it again. If your not reading this series you're just missing out on a great WiFi adventure. Many thanks to the authors for a wonderful read.
21 books down and still exciting to read. The chargers remain strong. Many of the books that get this far in a set turn into the author just hurrying up to finish it. Here it remains exciting.. I can barely wait until 4 August to get here.
When the tide turns, it really changes things. Van and crew are still working the job. Maybe a bit in the gray area sometimes, but with good intentions. Although the bad guys are ascendant now, our heroes are rising up.
Van and his crew, have started on their plan to restore the guild back to what it was meant to be. It will not be easy or quick, but they have started to move forward, gaining new allies and opening new fronts. Looking forward to the next book.
I don’t know how Chaney and Maggert keep making the series better but they do. Great action and story line the keep the saga moving forward, plus the readers feels good just following along. Highly recommended!!
Started like many have mentioned..teary. Then began to ramp up and build.....same characters ...some "different". Being a pariah in your profession is just plain difficult. The6 carry on to the end. The wait is long...
Very much looking forward to the next one. I shouldn't allow it, but these stories keep me up so late reading them that it's hard to get going the next morning without my first cup of coffee!
The suspense runs throughout this novel. You feel the urgency and the danger as it happens! You are drawn into this story as it is part of every book so far. As a climax
Van and the crew continue to be hunted. It was a good read. Lots going on. Hopefully the authors will put this story arc to bed in the next book as it is starting to drag leading up to the conclusion.
A storyline with danger and death, suspects and surprise. A continuation of Van Tudor and crew trying to set the Guild to rights or stopping it from being destroyed completely.
What a great book. Full of humor, caring and positive vibes.
Van has started pulling it together in order to eliminate his enemies and rebuild the Guild. Making plans, strengthening alliances and taking great risks.
Following the story of the Tudors, has been a fun journey. The ups and downs in each of the books has been out standing. Can't wait for the next installment of the story.
Van and his crew finally find a way and a plan to start the process of freeing the guild from Yotov’s clutches. Refreshing and at the same time uplifting. One of my favorites.
I love everything about this series. It's funny, exciting and dramatic. Everything I look for in a series. I highly the this series to anyone who loves sci-fi.
