Ever since the day she lost her family, Hinako has felt something consuming her from the inside out. No matter how hard she tries to hide it, she’s an open book to Shiori, who is Hinako’s best hope at escaping the weight of her past…So when the flesh-eating mermaid presses her prey for the truth, Hinako finally spills her heart! Unexpectedly, Shiori responds with encouragement—but even that isn’t enough to stop Hinako’s life from unraveling...
Shiori learns what happened to Hinako’s family on the day she became an orphan. But the question remains - if Hinako is so delicious to monsters, how exactly has she avoided being eaten before now?
Yuri horror’s preeminent (and only?) title returns for a second volume that promises just as much as the first volume and, despite them being quite different in their approach, delivers on that promise with some interesting revelations.
This is horror in that it involves creatures and blood and death and may or may not end with Hinako’s evolution into a happy meal for Shiori down the road. But Shiori is in no rush and their first chapter feels rather like therapy as opposed to anything else. It’s not exactly The Drifting Classroom here.
After we learn of Hinako’s story, Shiori essentially talks her into staying alive so she becomes tastier and happier by doing so. Since there’s lots of leeway here, it will be interesting to see just what form this directive eventually takes and that’s part of the fun.
Naturally, as they head home, the two of them get spotted by Hinako’s actual best friend, Miko. And that’s just an invitation for some real drama to start; I mean, Miko’s been by Hinako’s side this whole time. For whatever that’s worth (typically a lot, in yuri terminology).
The rest of the volume is the repercussions and revelations echoing out from that event and it would not be fair to spoil things. Suffice to say, it asks and answers a lot of questions and boasts some truly interesting reveals.
Now, does it feel like some of this mythology is being made up along the way? Yes. Normally that would bother me, but it’s not entirely conjured up out of nowhere and the story typically eschews massive exposition in favour of getting to the point and letting the actual plotting stay at the fore. Much appreciated.
Without getting into spoilers, there’s not much else to be said, but everything goes to some very solid (and downright cruel, in terms of one character’s burden) places that make a certain sense if you’re bringing folklore into things. Which the series certainly is.
There’s still very little romance to this, but, on the other hand, Shiori has done far more for Hinako in two volumes than most couples in a yuri story ever do. They just haven’t gone anywhere passionate with it. And when the rest of the content is strong enough, it doesn’t really need to.
4 stars - boy, this is fun. It’s a tight little story that’s really engaging and spins a full volume out of three characters and not much else. A great trip off the beaten path.
this is a great volume two, and somehow I don't dislike it for taking a completely different approach to the story with a focus on the monster aspect and fighting. a lot of plot related background in releaved and I'm hooked.

“i’ve been wondering this for a while now, but… why are you so eager to die?”
this volume… was SO GOOD—OH, my gosh (っㅠ﹏ㅠς)… poor hinako :((( miko being a fox spirit is so… AAAH i love it i love it i love it… she was protecting hinako this whole time before shiori came…
the switch in personality after shiori revealed miko’s true identity was SO GOOD ugh.
“unforgivable. unforgivable. unforgivable. unforgivable. unforgivable. unforgivable. unforgivable. you filthy seafaring scum. it’s over for you. even after i’ve ripped you into a thousand pieces, i won’t let you be.”
miko repressing her urge to eat hinako for years because she genuinely cares about hinako is so precious to me. but i wonder, does she eat other people? shiomi said she was a pacifist, so has she been starving herself for years? i mean, shiomi said so. i know miko eats human food but surely that’s not as filling as humans— or whatever monsters eat… hmmm…..
“…that child must be protected… for daichi and yuri… and mutsuki… at least that promise…!”
…
“what…?
why
why did she say my father’s name
that promise…”
HELLO????? i need to know more NOW. just what is miko keeping from hinako??? i have some ideas but… omg…
also this may sound crazy but- i don’t think shiori …wants to eat hinako. I MEAN- maybe she does, maybe she really is just a monster but… no right??? like maybe she has another reason to be with hinako but just says that she’s waiting for hinako to be “delicious” …i don’t know, i just have a feeling 😭!
SO GOOD

My prediction was true haha! The best friend (Miko) and the monster (Shiori) have a major confrontation. This reveals that Miko is a fox god who MC's family prayed to for safety shortly before the accident. She managed to save MC and vowed to protect her, but starves and is sickly in her human form as a result of her efforts not to eat her friend.
It was sad at first reading MC's realization that her best friend wasn't real. But at the end I think we are going in the direction of their friendship is real , it's just more complicated than MC thought.
I liked this volume more than I liked the first one

1st volumes are never the best, I feel 2nd volumes are a much better indicator of what we've got vibe wise. Let me tell you, I am here for it.
While in volume 01 hinako felt like a character that couldn't quite stand on her own without little miss flesh eating sunshine following her around. Shiori always seems to have the upper hand in whose the most toxic hurricane contest. I thought opening volume 2 with her saying Hinako smells like a beached rotting whale but in an affectionate way would cement that.
Out of left field though Hinako breaks out the category 5 "I'm attracted to you because you remind me of the ocean I watched my whole family both burn and drown in" causing Shiori to glitch out for a second. I have hope that this means the story will make Shiori experience a devastating loss causing her to realize she's not on the beach volleyball side of the emotional buffet anymore.
Thats not all either. I loved Miko in volume 01 and felt sad at the thought of her stuck in "comic relief friend" territory. I am no longer sad and rooting for her to win Hinako's heart (and depression). Truely, a great series so far if you love gay misery.

This volume delves deeper into several of the characters that were introduced in Volume 1. We learn more about the accident that claimed Hinako’s family, as well as the survivor’s guilt she suffers in its aftermath. I am intrigued by the way Shiori has begun to coax Hinako into allowing herself to enjoy life, and I am curious to see what direction this will take later in the series.
No spoilers, but there is also some MAJOR character development involving Hinako’s friend, Miko-chan. This adds a lot of juicy complexity and depth to an already gripping tale.
The pacing is too quick, with this volume’s Big Reveal coming too fast and needing a touch more development to fully land for me. But it’s not a completely out of nowhere move that’s merely turning the plot; there are signs from the story’s outset in vol 1. For myself, I just wanted it to happen perhaps a little more slowly and with a couple more bits of development between the characters to make it hit emotionally, relationally, and thematically all that much more.
However, that’s really the only major quibble I have, and it’s by no means a dealbreaker. Vol 2 still keeps things working and is a solid yarn addressing important things in lovely ways.
Volume 2 was even better than volume 1. I am so glad that there is more to Miko than just being the annoying always happy bff character. This Yuri continues to surprise me in the best ways. There is so much depth to this story and I am so glad that I took the suggestion I saw in a comment section about a good Yuri manga that’s not just sweet romance. I regret not getting into this series sooner. I have no critiques.

As Shiori patiently waits to devour Hinako, the two spend more time together and become closer. But Hinako's best friend, Miko, isn't thrilled to share her.
Great story development with some fantastic twists and turns.
The artwork is hauntingly beautiful. Creep, odd, and gorgeous.
Such an interesting series. Really looking forward to continuing this story.
I don't like Shiori's character type. She's annoying. Fighting about who 'owns' her, really? Fighting who can protect/eat her? As if Hinako has nothing to say in that matter!
And please, kitsune vs mermaid? Definitely choosing the kitsune here.
This volume immediately hooked me, the depth of emotion and bleak atmosphere created such an intense read trying to understand the emotions of all the characters when they all want to hide them. Incredibly engaging read that really challenges you to understand the motivations and layers of the amazingly written characters
As I expected, this couldn’t possibly keep up the intensity and dread of the first volume, but it’s still very good. We get some more backstory, a big surprise about a character, and hints that there’s still more to be revealed. Definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes next.
Coming off of the previous book I had a very 'want to see where the story goes' vibes. But this book was really interesting and opened up the lore of this world even more. I am excited to see what we'll discover in the next volume and how everything will go from here.
damn, i should've seen that coming, anyways loved all the reveals in this volume and excited for more !!! they have quickly become one of my fav doomed duos
I thought I had this series clocked by chapter 1 and I was here for that, but this volume has a development that completely up ends my assumptions and I am so incredibly here for it
The plot thickens, and one my favorite mythical beasts makes an appearance! I just wish that these volumes weren't so short, because the story is so good, yet I'm only getting small bites of it...
