Jed Mackay’s widely acclaimed Moon Knight saga continues to unfold as his cast gets caught up in the BLOOD HUNT!
For the new and vengeful Moon Knight, taking Marc Spector’s name isn’t enough — now he will turn his sights (and fists) on everything Marc held dear in life! But Tigra, Hunter’s Moon and their allies in the Midnight Mission — Reese, Soldier and 8-Ball — already have their hands full with the vampires running amok in the BLOOD HUNT!
COLLECTING: Vengeance of The Moon Knight (2024) 5-9
I take it back. I said Moon Knight was becoming the best comic in Marvel/Disney right now. This is the best comic out there right now. I love Moon Knight with Jeb Mackay.
Moon Knight, Marc Spector is dead. However, the Midnight Mission continues to those he saved, befriended, adopted, and left behind. They will fight to the death to carry on the legecy. Now, with the Bloodhunt in full swing, death seems easy. On the front lines, Reese, Soldier, and an unexpected ally fight the vampire armies to save people. Tigra, Hunter Moon, and another unexpected ally are taking the biggest gamble that will either turn the tide or ve the end of everything.
I love that the Moon Knight (Marc) inspires hate and fear in heroes, and villains alike is able to inspire such respect and loyalty to the people around him. This book has everything that made me a comic book fan. Loyalty, sacrifice, insurmountable odd, turning the tide, redemption, and action. I don't know where the series, mini-series, or ongoing series goes from here, but with Jen at the helm Moon Knight seem to go from strength to strength. The book finishes with a thumbnail varient covers gallery.
Enjoyable, with some nice moments, but too disjointed and slightly predictable. I didn’t like the constantly switching artists, either, but that seems to be the norm with comics these days, unfortunately.
Really enjoyed this one. Don't want to spoil anything, but there were some really cool moments in this. Jed MacKay has done an amazing job on Moon Knight. His Dr. Strange and Black Cat are excellent too. Recommend.
Strangely enough, the only really interesting tie-ins to Blood Hunt on which the event has a real impact are Doctor Strange and Moon Knight, 2 series written by Jed MacKay. Which leads me to wonder whether Blood Hunt wasn't originally an internal event in MacKay's series that the editorial team decided to turn into a cash grab with lots of tie-ins and individual issues of no interest whatsoever.
Be that as it may, these 2 series are both good, even essential - especially Strange - complements to Blood Hunt with real internal repercussions. MacKay has orchestrated everything perfectly. He manages to maintain the tension and interest in the characters - even 8-Ball, who would have thought? - whether in issues specific to the event or not.
Finally stopped procrastinating and got around to some stragglers. Namely the end of the Vengeance of the Moon Knight series. I liked the Blood Hunt tie in this had and not knowing much about the characters I found myself caring for all of them very quickly! I liked where it leaves off and I’m excited to get into the semi recent Fist of Khonshu series.
Characters dying and then getting better is of course a superhero comics mainstay, but Jed MacKay has a particular gift for it; we all knew Marc would be back for the mantle sooner or later, but the issue here where it happens was still dusty room time. Just a shame that, in a classic perplexing publishing decision, Marvel had already spoiled some of the details of that by the unnecessarily early release of #0 of his new series. All the same, at a time when the end of Krakoa has left Marvel's cupboard looking pretty bare, trust another character who defiantly reminds his enemies that he cannot die to be the star of one of their best remaining books.
It’s hard for an amazing series to reach the same heights as the last one— and I don’t think Vengeance did that exactly— now don’t throw tomatoes at me! This was still an incredible, five star series. I genuinely enjoyed every single issue and it only continued to get back through Marc’s resurrection and reunion with his team, especially his reunion with Greer. Someone needs to give this creative team an award already!
Can’t wait for MK: Fist of Khonsu in October!

Best read in conjunction with Blood Hunt, which is what I did. I really enjoyed the character exploration of Moon Knight's allies in this volume, and his return was very emotive.
Another solid Moon Knight read! Jed MacKay has finally won me over now that the secondary characters in the Midnight Mission are fleshed out individuals. So, when we see them take down Nu Moon Knight and then battle their way through Blood Hunt, we really care about them! Especially as a few of them are good vampires battling bad vampires - with so much bloodlust in common, how do you hold yourself apart from the monsters?
I was quite surprised how much this volume actually matters to the outcome of Blood Hunt - the Shroud basically kicks off the event, and then the rescue of Khonshu and resurrection of Moon Knight bring it to a conclusion. Pretty satisfying to see these big scenes in this tiny volume. And, of course, the status quo is returned, but hopefully future Moon Knight volumes continue the gentle soap opera dramatics now that I actually care about everyone.
At this point we have to accept that the "death and rebirth of a superhero" storyline isn't about shaking up the status quo, but is merely a familiar trope in the comic book industry like saving a princess, the quest to collect X number of mcguffins, or the struggle against the Dark Lord. As with any of these stories, the trope being used matters less than the execution and with this conclusion to yet another "death and rebirth of superhero" storyline, Jed MacKay, has cemented his run as perhaps the single best Moon Knight since Lemire's revolutionary storyline and Moensch's original series.
Bolstered by Alessandro Cappuccio's absolutely ICONIC depictions of Khonshu and Moon Knight himself, the book is beautiful, works fabulously on the foundations that have been built, and delivers a great story with MacKay's penchant for misdirection and clever little plot twists. Every time I think I am about to be disappointed, MacKay reminds me that he clearly understands and loves this character at least as much as I do. Reese continues to be a fantastic addition to the story, but if I had to offer one serious criticism it's that we rarely let the very cool new character Hunter's Moon do anything... well, cool. Hunter's Moon is a fantastic addition to the Moon Knight family, and I really hope we get to see him do more than be Moon Knight's sidekick.
I look forward to seeing where things go in Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu, but as far as telling a complete story goes, Vengeance of the Moon Knight delivers in style.
I like how this showed 8-Ball in such a new light and really making him such a fascinating character like someone trying to help and when the events of BLOOD HUNT kick off it makes the series really good and go in interesting directions with Soldier and Reese helping other people even though they are scared of Vampires and then there is the thing with the return of Marc which was done so well and the scene where Marc and Tigra are running towards each other, it feels like a filmy moment lol!
In all it leads to a good ending with the clash between Marc and Shroud/Max and it shows the dark price of Khonshu but Marc outwitting him and yeah thats cool lol, but overall the death didn't last long as predicted but its less about death and more about how death has changed Marc and in his absence how his team stepped up to save people and carry on the legacy of MK!
It will be interesting to follow from here what's next in Mackay's run on MK!

Glad this wrapped up here — I feel like Marvel pushes some of these runs into overlong territory, but this had a nice set of finales that closed the loop on a lot of what came back in the first volume. I don’t usually get caught up in the art direction of most Marvel comics, but the work here was generally very good — visually clear and moody with a lot of variance from how close the frame was to the subjects. Cappuccio in particular had some great illustrations of Khonshu. Even the tie-in to Blood Hunt made some sense here and while I felt like Hunter’s Moon and Tigra were so out of place in the main run, their inclusion here finally clicked for me. Sounds like MacKay is starting a new run on Moon Knight soon, so I’ll keep my eye out for that.
Not so great news: this was not my jam at all. Ties into Blood Hunt which is an event I was pretty middling on. Marc and Tigra's moment where they reunite is great, and some of his dialogue with Khonshu is interesting, but this doesn't have almost any of the things I liked from the main run. It sets up another strong run, and I have high hopes for Fist of Khonshu, but this connecting mini just unfortunately wasn't great.
This volume dovetails the last year or worth of storylines. Moon Knight is dead. Khonshu is imprisoned. Vampires are taking over the Earth. The Shroud has taken over as Moon Knight. In many ways it's an elegant solution to many issues. But somehow the Blood Hunt crossover also manages to feel like a distraction, because it provides such a big interruption to the story of the Shroud. So, a good end to the last series (the last two series) but just a little bit awkward too.
MacKay keeps his remarkable run of Moon Knight going as the inhabitants of the midnight mansion face the consequences of the death and possible rebirth of the one who guards the night. This volume ties in a bit to a larger Marvel event and so faces some of the more fragmented storytelling that comes with that, but through it all, MacKay preserves the characters, themes, and dramatic action that have made this series great, setting a strong next chapter still to come.
Truly you can skip this one. The only reason to read this would be for the Blood Hunt crossover, but if you’re just reading Moon Knight this volume is very inessential. Just look up the synopsis so you can understand what happens re: Khonshu and Marc, but other than that there’s no reason to check this out.
Also, is it just me or did they draw Soldier as white in the Blood Hunt issues?
Fuck yeah! I don't think I want Jed MacKay to ever stop writing Moon Knight comics at this point tbh. This is one of the most emotional ones I have read in a while and I really have grown to love characters like Reese, Soldier and Tigra, despite not warming up to them right away, when they first turned up. Super excited at all of the major new developments. I'm even rooting for 8-Ball!
Blood Hunt brings Moon Knight (the real one!) back to the fore, as we get some alternate takes on plot points from the main series, and the return of Marc Spector to the Midnight Mission as this stage of MacKay's Moon Knight ends and the next begins.
Probably one of the few series for which Blood Hunt wasn't an imposition. Instead, the event serves to tie up a number of loose ends on the book, and get it ready for the next chapter. Beyond that, it's just an enjoyable read, largely because I really care about these characters.
This was excellent. Exciting, heartfelt, and very smart, as Tigra and Hunter's Moon go about rescuing Khonshu from his Asgardian prison and paving the way for Marc Spector's return. And it all fits in fairly seamlessly with Blood Hunt as well. Excited to see what's next.
Short comic deaths are the best ones (if they have to happen at all).
Art is terrific and appropriate. As always great to have Tigra in an ongoing and, perhaps most thankfully, the Shroud looks set up for a redemption ark.
