The Devil is a dark-eyed billionaire with a thirst for revenge—on me. 6 months as his assistant. One million dollars. No quitting.

Jonah Crown. Unfeeling. Merciless. Hotter than hell. The man my gossip column nicknamed the Prince of Darkness. And now I’ll call him my boss.

Our deal is simple. Survive six months as his assistant, fulfill his outrageous demands, and get my failing paper back at the end.

I might be stubborn, but Jonah is a force of nature, and being cold and cruel? He excels at it.

I’m certain I can win him over. He’s certain he can bring me down. But as we spend time together, his torment turns to teasing. His taunting turns to touching.

I should hate Jonah, but it’s impossible once I see the real him. He might be arrogant, but he would burn the world for those he loves. And when I’m threatened? He’ll stop at nothing to protect me.

I’m in trouble. Falling for Jonah means he wins, and I get my heart broken.

I'm not going to rate this, as I've skimmed the book after the 25% mark.

===========================

Background:

Jonah (H) wants to take down his ex-friend, Dylan. The douche outed his sister and used Jonah's ex to get nude photos and videos of him. He's the CEO of a media company, and he weaponizes the press against Jonah's family. His revenge has been years in the making but was ruined by Callie (h) unintentionally .

Jonah has been in cahoots with Dylan's COO, and they planned to sue him for tax fraud. But Callie is a full-time reporter and part-time paparazzi, and she took a photo of Jonah and the COO when they met in secret and sold the picture to Dylan's company.

So this incident tipped Dylan and is now onto Jonah and whatever his plans may be. Hence, Jonah's revenge plan was ruined *temporarily*. But since he's smart, he's made a new plan, and Callie will be his pawn to execute it.

============================

I just don't think stories that are heavily focused on revenge are my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, I read the blurb and it made me curious, so I guess why not give this a try.

While I know it's only the beginning, I don't like the ruthlessness and viciousness of Jonah. He's got a one track mind and is hellbent on quenching his thirst for revenge. I got a teeny tiny bit scared of getting inside his head, so I ended up skimming the story instead. I don't want to get so invested in it that when the third act conflict happens, I know it'll ruin my impression of the whole story. 🤷‍♀️

There's A LOT of push and pull here, and the pushing away was mainly on Jonah's side. He couldn't wrap his head around the fact that he was falling for his enemy (Callie). He considered her such since if she hadn't snapped the photo, his revenge scheme would've gone smoothly and as planned. So if readers are up to reading someone like that, then maybe this attitude of his won't be a problem for them.

Like I said, I skimmed through this and read that he eventually acknowledged his feelings for Callie. But she didn't return the sentiment immediately because, even though Jonah said he's in love with her, he couldn't accept the fact that she loves to be a reporter. 🙄

At this point, his love for her is conditional, and he asked her not to pursue this career anymore, even though he knew how much she loved it. The trauma caused by his ex is still at the forefront of his mind, and he still can't get past it. Despite knowing Callie for quite some time, deep down in his mind, he's afraid that she'll betray him like his ex. 😒

Which made it seem like she did when the third-act conflict happened. I didn't read this part of the story, but it was said that when they started to get frisky, Jonah sent some NSFW photos to Callie, and she uploaded them to her cloud for personal and private use. But her account was hacked, and an article was published using these photos, so this is like deja vu for Jonah. So imagine his reaction to this, and let's just say he was really cruel to her when he got even for her *betrayal*. 😤

He eventually realized the same day he ruined Callie's life that she wasn't responsible for it, and right away he ran after her, but she's no longer around.

With no job prospects and bills that wouldn't stop coming every month, Callie took a barista side job in the meantime. And Jonah showed up every day to walk her to her new job, stayed in the cafe all day, and walked her home afterwards. To be a billionaire, right? 🤷‍♀️

He apologized (many times) and promised to change. He even started reading all the articles that she wrote and started to appreciate her dedication to journalism. He donated money to her alma mater to financially aid students who wanted to take that course but didn't have the means to do so. He even said he was going to give it all up—his career, money, and everything—just to have her back in his life. 🥹

This grovel, I think, lasted for weeks. I'm not sure how long, though; no exact time frame was said. He was determined to wait for her and even said he's not going to fall for anyone, even if she decides not to take him back. That was kind of sweet, and it made me swoon a little bit. But then I realized how much he messed up, so I think this is the bare minimum to show how much he's sorry for what he did.

Personally, I think he groveled enough, but again, appreciation for something like this is subjective. It may be good enough for me but unsatisfactory for others. I also like how Callie didn't give in so easily. Sure, she still talks to him and has never shown indifference, but I think it's because she understood where he's coming from when he reacted the way he did.

Also, because while she was hurt by what he did, she still loves him and misses what they used to be. She just needed to see that he really changed for her to give him another chance. And Jonah did, he succeeded in winning her back and promised not to hurt her anymore. I think giving up his revenge on Dylan was the tipping point for Callie, and this is how she knew that he would choose her every time. 🤭

I did enjoy the grovel overall. But I've come to the realization that the revenge trope is not for me. Also, I didn't like that the ending was a HFN. I'm greedy with epilogues, and I want to see the couples I read years later in their lives. 🤷‍♀️

Anyhoo, I think this is still a good read, even though I skimmed it. I don't think I skipped important scenes. So if readers like the revenge trope and grovel, perhaps they could give this a chance.

I can't give any safety info since I didn't read the entirety of it. 😅

So I DNF'd two other books before starting this one. Verdict? It was a decently written romance. The leads were sympathetic, with some character developments. Their push and pull had some fine times (with some witty lines!) (and I am greedy, more brutal asshole moves would have been even more delicious!), and the last drama/ betrayal packed a good enough punch. His grovel was kind of passive-aggressive but I guess it was okay for this story and how Callie was depicted as being.

What chagrined me a bit was the plot holes on the world building. I get that this is fiction, and I am required to suspend disbelief. But I need some kind of basic logic to the plot, esp. when these plot points are the ones that drove the character together. To name a few:

And while the writing was good, I think the book was way too long for such a plot. I always wonder why editors don't pick up on the pacing lags, the story dragging to ineffectual directions, while packing all the action too rushedly in the last few chapters.

That said, I think ST's work shows promise. And can get much more rounded with the right editors.

P.S. I don't know if she'll ever write it, but I would love to see the story of Callie's nurse friend and the overbearing doctor. Of course with proper research and all, but it would tempt me for sure!

Grammatically incorrect

English is my second language so correct grammar is imperative for me. I was so lost when the author started to refer to a character as “they”. I kept going back to see if I was missing something, thinking there was another character involved in the conversation (in order to have a plural pronoun). I later understood when the author wrote something about George and his painted fingernail. I’m all pro new political correctness when you are speaking, but when writing, this just makes it messy and hard to understand. I read it halfway and decided to return it. I’ll make sure not to read more from this author.

I recently received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I have to say, this book had me hooked from start to finish. I laughed, I cried, and I even found myself talking out loud to myself as I was reading. The banter between the two main characters, Callie and Jonah, is off the charts amazing. The character development between them is absolutely beautiful, and seeing Callie bring Jonah out of his shell is just one of the many things that made me fall in love with him. He may act all big and tough, but he's also a big softie at heart - and that's my weakness! Jonah has officially earned a spot on my list of permanent book boyfriends, thanks to the top-tier groveling that he had to do to win Callie's heart. And let's not forget about the spicy scenes - they were absolutely delicious and gave me all the butterflies. Trust me, this book is definitely a new favorite of mine, and I can't wait for you all to experience it for yourselves!

**I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review** (possible spoilers?)

I truly had a ball reading this book! I was laughing, I was talking out loud to myself, I was kicking my feet, I even teared up a bit. The banter between Callie and Jonah is something I really enjoyed. The character development between them was beautiful. Callie bringing Jonah out of his shell and becoming a more outgoing person is just one thing that made me fall in love with him. He acts all big and tough (and he definitely is 👀) but he’s also a big softie (my weakness!) Jonah may be ass but he’s definitely on my list of permanent book boyfriends! And the GROVELING was top tier she really made him work for it. The spice was absolutely delicious it gave me butterflies. All in all definitely a new favorite of mine!

My faith in Billionaire Romances has been restored! Jonah is my perfect man. Grumpy, alpha, possessive, protective, kind of a jerk but with that touch of gentleness that Callie brings out of him! I laughed, I swooned, I BLUSHED, my heart broke... This book made me feel everything under the sun and I LOVED it. Highly recommend and I can't wait to dig into more books by Sophia Travers!

I expected this to be really good cuz of all the amazing reviews but yall lied to me

The plot of this book goes basically like:
1. He hates her but lowkey doesn't
2. Gets mad at himself and her for not hating her enough
1. He does something terrible to her - including but not limited to throwing her lunch away and making her have a panic attack in front of hundreds of rich ppl
2. She feels sad because of what he did
3. He does something nice to make up for it
4. Repeats again when he realizes he wants to hate her

The saddest part is this book had such potential to be good if he wasn't a major ass
I think this note sums up my feelings:
Jonah: “He’s so damn happy. Am I missing out? Am I the fool?” Yes 👍🏻

Dnf @ 50%
My breaking point was when they did a lil bit of the nasty and he immediately pulls away afterwords basically tells her to fuck off then is confused when she's pissed off
Also I despise him if that wasn't clear enough

“I love you, too.”
Jonah dips his mouth to mine, and kisses me like he’s addicted to me. Maybe he is. All I know is nothing has ever felt this right.
He presses his forehead to mine as he murmurs, “I’ll chase you forever, Callie. Even when I have you. I’ll never give up.”
“You have me,” I say. “Forever.”

I love love Callie, like Thank God she isn’t one of those dumb fmcs that are clueless over everything.
Their banter is amazingly written and also I love how the author wrote their relationship, it wasn’t too slow nor was it too fast (although it took about 100+ pages for things between them actually start)
I kind of liked Jonah (mostly his money) but be gave me mixed feelings 🫡
Also the GROVELLING
I wish there was more??? Dude literally made her go broke but I guess to win a woman back (based on a few books i read) is to ✨follow her around✨ until she gives in and he gives a long ass paragraph on how he’d do anything for her and loves her then they kiss and then end.
☺️☺️

ARC READ******

Sophia Travers has outdone herself with this book!!! I loved the banter that went on between Jonah and Callie. The tense between these two was off the charts, and the spicy scenes were hot 🔥 🥵!!! The chemistry was amazing between these two!! The way Callie was always standing her ground no matter what Jonah threw at her, it drove Jonah crazy which was the perfect grumpy vs. sunshine dynamic. The way jonah was out for revenge and but ending up wanting her in his life fully!! I couldn't put this book down and finished it in one day!!! Highly recommended

I enjoyed this story, and was invested in seeing how things would play out - particularly for Callie. I was really rooting for her, which isn't always true for me and MFCs. The toxicity level in this wasn't bad at all (as opposed to some other billionaire romances I've read). Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something in this subgenre.

I’ll torment her, but never touch her.
I’ll tease her, but never kiss her. Until I do.

Revenge was supposed to keep me warm at night, but all I want is her.

The banter between the two main characters, Callie and Jonah, was hilarious, filled with laugh out loud moments! Their character development was truly beautiful, with Jonah coming out of his shell from Callie's influence. This story ticked all the boxes to feel all the feels!

Honestly, this book had so much potential. Or maybe I expected way too much. I needed more soul wrenching grovelling and more romance, and smut was not it for me in this one. It started out okay, then it got very good, but then it started getting boring again. But honestly i still enjoyed many parts so 2 stars it is.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Sophia Travers writes the BEST banter and tension between the main characters! This was a great enemies to lovers with a sloooow burn (but SO worth it). The FMC was awesome and I loved that she didn’t back down from anyone despite all the sh!t she went through. There was a little suspense which also made me want to keep reading. Another excellent billionaire romance from this author!

ARC Review:

First off, thank you to Sophia for letting me be an ARC reader again for you. It is such a pleasure.

Now, JONAH. My god. This man is infuriating and handsome and stubborn and ruthless and cruel but sweet and protective and will do anything for those he loves.
Callie is a reporter trying to make ends meet while still having a moral compass (hard to do in that industry). Her father is having health issues and their paper isn’t doing well. One wrong move can send her into the arms of the Dark Prince.

Is that good or bad? 😈

I Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The banter, the connection between Jonah and Callie was just perfect. Seriously, the biggest giggles, feet kicking and stress from the relationship between them was everything I look for in a book. I absolutely devoured this in a day and will 100% admit that Jonah will be your next book boyfriend.

No one writes book boyfriends better than Sophia!

Jonah is my current obsession. He’s morally grey in the best way and he knows no bounds when it comes to protecting what is his.

The tension written in this book is THICK but the banter between Jonah and Callie makes for a great combination.

If you’re looking for possessiveness, morally grey, touch her and ☠️ kind of vibes then Jonah Crown is your man!

I would definitely rate this read way above 5 stars but I’m a sucker for a tension filled romance, spicy scenes, and morally grey men!

Re-read January 2026:

Still love it, maybe a bit more than I remembered. 🥰

5.0 stars

I really enjoyed the story, as a fantasy romance. In real life the hero would be a huge red flag. But it works as a novel, we get his POV and learn that he isn't generally as bad as he appears to be. He's actually kind and sweet and willing to apologise, but his revenge is just his main focus and anyone in it's path is his enemy.

I generally love a more slow burn story (sex in the second half) but even though they had sex a bit before the halfway mark (around 40%) it felt earned and based on developing romantic feelings. And I liked the spicy scenes there aren't that smutty but spicy and sexy.

The biggest problem for most readers (aside from the hero's focus on revenge) his the big asshole move at the end. It reminded me of "You can have Manhattan" but a little less shitty (because it wasn't as public). But in comparison to "You can have Manhattan" the grovel was better. He should've been groveling longer but he really tried. For me it was enough and I liked the epilogue but it's definitely something other readers might struggle with (because he acted irrationally and did something pretty unforgivable).

since i tend to give books i love the really long reviews, today I decided to return the energy to a book that I don't love so much. this is one of those books where it's actually unbelievable that the two main characters ended up together. you know those Instagram reel prompts that ask: "which fictional couple do you think is most likely to get a divorce after the book ended?" well, I'll tell you that i'd have to say jonah and callie. the amount of times I rolled my eyes or actually cringed...

first of all, they were so hot and cold. at one point in the book, jonah was telling her that he liked her and it was honestly so unbelievable because, based on the pattern of their relationship, I knew he would backtrack this statement and say that he couldn't trust her and was waiting to enact his revenge on her. guess what? i was right. surprise surprise.

after so much hot and cold and then feeling like this would get somewhere, there was the third act breakup (which we could all see from a mile away). and honestly, they were acting so surprised at the true colors of the other person but it was basically obvious to everyone but them that they go as well together as me and the color tan (i.e. they don't). like callie was acting all upset that this man, who has a horrible experience with a reporter girlfriend in the past can't get be with her because she's a reporter (meanwhile he was there to comfort her when she had a bad experience at that gala...hmmm. hypocritical much?). on the other hand, jonah reallyyyy thought she was going to give up her job to be with him. and he was also an asshole from the beginning and throughout the entire relationship like i would leave you too.

his groveling was basic, embarrassing, and quite frankly stupid. like the scholarship in her name...come on now at least build a better backstory in order to make this more of a tearjerker. and i hate it when the characters are like "I'll never take you back" and then fold like one month later. i need like 3 years minimum. plus callie was like "i still loved him all along." give me a breakkkkkk.

and then to top it all off, he decides to not enact revenge on dylan because he wanted to protect callie. are you kidding me you guys would have won the court case...you literally found that he had fraud allegations, abuse allegations, like...get it together. i get wanting to protect her but your close friend is literally a lawyer and you're a billionaire and you're telling me you couldn't win the 30 million.

this book was way too long for what it was worth, and yet not long enough because these characters were not fleshed out well enough. i could not sympathize with either one. the one redeeming quality was that callie rejected jonah's proposal 49 times because they were way too early into their dating life. so she finally got a brain!
