Jack Flint #1

Jack Flint and the Redthorn Sword

Rate this book
Myth, magic, danger - fantastically fast-paced fantasy from brand new children's talent. A boy searches for his long lost father when he steps into a legend that has come to life..
Jack Flint is 13. He's never known his mother and has - literally - lost his father. On a stormy Halloween he steps from his humdrum world of school, chores and getting by, into a maelstrom. Scaling the dark-walled coppice known as Cromwath Blackwood he and his best friend, Kerry Malone, find a mysterious circle of thirteen standing stones. Stones that almost seem to be breathing, pulling the boys to a place of myth and mayhem.
From playing fields to battle fields they stumble into the legendary world of Temair. Here Celtic myth comes to life as Jack, Kerry and Corriwen Redthorn, the orphaned daughter of a Temair Chief, face the terrifying cunning of Morrigan, goddess of death and her servants, the Scree and the cruel, black-feathered Roaks.
Their quest is fast paced and furious. Along the way, startlingly, Jack realises they are not just saving their own lives, they find clues that might lead him to his father.
Stepping through portals to other worlds is a favourite device - Narnia, Harry Potter, our own DOOMSPELL and LEGENDEER trilogies - but it's one of the most successful if it's done properly, as it is here by Joe Donnelly. Drawing on Celtic myth with his own original embellishments, he knows the world he's created inside out.

This striking, eye-catching book cannot fail to stand out on the bookshelf, with a most intriguing tale that is full of creativity igniting ones imagination. With young Jack as the main character and his friends this character-driven tale sets off at an incredible pace, full of action and drama as you delve into the most exciting journey. The Redthorn sword is a magical object of such immense power as to awaken the deadly Morrigan from her slumber, thus polluting the world with evil and so are three lovable characters set off to ultimately save the world from its fate. They have ‘the book of ways’ as their guide together with much courage and strength of character, which makes them distinctively unique and memorable. Myth, magic and mayhem this story evokes the fantasy genre in its entire that is brimmed full with magical objects, spells and enchantments that is truly spellbinding. Adorned with beautiful illustrations that brought this story and Joe Donnelly’s creation to life, I was pulled into the most intensely gripping and utterly believable tale of the young adult/ children’s category. After reading this first installment within a most promising trilogy I now cannot wait to continue my journey, and discover more of Jack’s adventures and other works by this most accomplished author. Anyone who loves adventure and the thrill of a mission or quest will be transfixed by this innovative creation that keeps you guessing constantly, sending you on a most electrifying rollercoaster of a ride into the unknown. I loved the whole concept of this captivating object and its significance, with how good can be connected to evil in the most unlikely way. I fell in love with Jack, Kerry and Corriwen who brought such energy and individuality into the plot, which continued to develop in complexity and momentum. I would highly recommend this book to those who love the fantasy genre and who are looking for something that is targeted more towards a younger reader, either child or teenager. Being so full of drama, action and surprise this story I can grantee will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat right to the very end, being something that I was unable to put down.

More adventure and mild peril than you can shake a stick at, this book has got it all. Missing fathers, uncovered secrets, hidden worlds and myths come to life, this is a great little read.Jack Flint (hero of the story) has lost his father, well, he didn't lose him, he disappeared. Soon things start to unravel, and Jack and his friend Kelly (faithful sidekick and comic relief) find themselves entering Cromwath Blackwood, in order to uncover the truth. Inside they find they have stumbled upon another world, where myths and legends are real, and nothing is quite as it seems. They meet up with fiesty young red-head (aren't they always!) Corriwen, and together embark on a quest of epic proportions.

Donnelly re-weaves Celtic Mythology like a master, and adds his own flare that makes this such a darn good read!!

A fantasy story that starts off quite interesting, when two boys find their way into a different world, having a talisman that could mean doom or glory of that world and their own as the evil Morrigan plots to take over all worlds.

Jack Flint and his friend Kerry Malone find themselves in a different world on Halloween night. There they meet a girl, Corriwen, who is on the run from a wicked uncle who has usurped the throne and wants to get hold of the Redthorn sword which will release the imprisoned Morrigan, so Jack, Kerry and Corriwen need to get to the sword first to ensure that the Morrigan stays locked up, only she doesn't. All the way through they nearly kill each other and people who try to help them because they mistake each other for enemies and traitors. They swim over waterfalls and through molten lava, but the magic book they carry is harmed by neither water nor fire, and nor, apparently, is the very mundane and unmagical supermarket backpack in which they carry it. .

They travel in an hour a distance that looks like a week's journey on the map, and then take three days (on galloping horses) to cover a distance that looks only about a third as long as the other. One expects weird things to happen in fantasy stories set in fantasy worlds, but even in fantasy there needs to be some kind of internal consistency.

But eventually the plot begins to unravel and even the fantasy loses credibility as distances on the map provided shrink and stretch, not by magic, not by science, but apparently by oversight of the author. The denouement goes on and on until the exhausted reader almost wishes the protagonists to get killed to just put an end to it. The eponymous sword that is supposed, when recovered after much hardship, to ensure that the Morrigan stays locked up doesn't. which makes the whole quest to recover it seem rather pointless. There's a sequel, but I don't think I'll be reading it.

Goodreads should really get an option that says something along the lines of 'gave up' or something cause I honestly could not finish this book. It was sooo boring! I tried to read a million times but I was always very VERY easily distracted. I may be a slow reader but thats cause I'm really into what I'm reading and rarely ever do I get distracted. I only got to page like 179 before I gave up. Had I not read it after reading 'The Lost Hero' by Rick Riordan than perhaps I would have given it something better than 1 star. But as it is, I have to give this book a 1 star rating. Maybe I'll re read it later and see if my opinions change.

I came across this in a bookstore and it didn't disappoint me. A good fantasy story about saving the world(s), Good vs. Bad. Well read.

I read all three of Jack Flint trilogy (The Redthorn Sword, the Spellbinder’s Curse, The Dark Ways), by Joe Donnelly but am reviewing them as one because I'd say the same for them all, even though my favourite was The Dark Ways. Note: the books seem also to be available with different titles.

I came across Joe Donnally’s adult books and enjoyed the first read so much I bought his other books. I got this children’s trilogy with it in mind to donate to the local library after I read them, who need such books. This series definitely shows imagination. I would have loved Jack’s adventures when I was a child and I would have hated the parts where the horses get hurt. Filled with strange people and beasts, portals to other universes, giants, trees that come to life in different forms, magic, and threat, along with bravery, loyalty, and love. Jack, Kerry, and Corriwen form a excellent trio for this trilogy, with weaknesses and strengths that balance them out well. They’re listed as children’s books, but the amount of violence and killing may, therefore, surprise some, even though it’s presented lightly. Jack seems to be the only who feels deeply sorry, and they all seem to handle the trauma too easily for 15-year-olds. It’s a difficult balance in a book to master and unlikely to please everyone. Still, I was reading much darker books by the time I was a similar age (Herbert, King, and I’d read books like Oliver Twist when I was 8), so for a modern audience such details are likely tame now.

I got into the book quite quickly and read 100 pages at once, then got called away and it took me over a week to return. I just didn’t have the drive to pick this up again and I’m not sure why.
I eventually came back and finished the rest in one go and it was ok, but not my favourite. It was a bit repetitive in places- they journey, someone gets lost, they rescue them etc. but it was good enough that I’m intrigued to try the second one as this one ends on a cliffhanger.

OMG!!! This book took me forever to read finish , and i was like "I wonder how long this is gonna take me reading it" But i finish it in the end .

The book review at the back of the book didn't actually help because the review is more like the middle chapter of the book instant the beginning of the book.

I was sorta of confused when i was reading the book , i felt like the story is jumping scene after scene .

But anyway i found this a series and i got the second and the third book . So i hope i will at least would not get confused with the story or maybe the review at the back of the book.

I took this book out from the library twice and wasn't able to finish it either time. It was just way too slow for me! I like a little more fast-paced action, thanks. Kerry Malone was the only reason I went back the second time; the Irish underdog idea reminded me of a really good book (A Difficult Boy) that I read a while back.

This excellent, scary-in-the-beginning, exciting book is about A boy, Jack Flint (called Jack) and his friend who are transported into a scary, strange world with no soul in sight-or so they think until they find a girl named Corriwen. Now all three of them must find the truth and get back home.

The characters and the story have real promise but this book needs a good editor and a copyeditor. Jack and Kerry often read as the same character. Neither of them are fully developed.
