The State of Israel was founded in conflict, and in the first ten years of its existence, it was involved in two major wars with its Arab neighbors. The First Arab-Israeli War began almost the moment that the new state was announced in May 1948. Although it barely had time to create armed forces, somehow Israel survived a simultaneous invasion by armies from four Arab states during that conflict. In 1956, Israel found itself at war again, this time fighting alongside Britain and France, who had launched an invasion of Egypt after fears that the Suez Canal might be closed. While these wars demonstrated just how lethally effective the Israel Defence Forces were, they failed to bring lasting peace to the Middle East.
By the mid-1960s, the relationship between Israel and its neighbors was once again strained. Palestinian guerrilla groups operating from bases in Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon had launched attacks on Israel, which responded with cross-border strikes. Tensions rose, and by the early summer of 1967, Egypt seemed to be preparing for war by moving troops and tanks closer to the Israeli border. Many people anticipated a new war in the Middle East, but when that war finally began in June 1967, it didn’t play out in the way that most had expected. Though the war lasted just six days, it changed the Middle East completely and turned Israel into a regional superpower. This is the surprising story of the Six-Day War.

I was a teenager at summer camp when I learned about the war between Israel and the 3 Arab countries with whom they fought. I marveled at the way Israel quickly defeated all their enemies. I learned that a big key to their victory was the destruction of all enemy air resources. I appreciated getting more knowledge of this major historical event.
This is a good book with a lot a great information and a very glaring, but not unexpected, omission. The book gives a good background and then gives the logistics of all the participants. It tries to explain the victory of the little, underdog nation of Israel but omits the possibility of divine intervention even in light of the many puzzling decisions made by the Arab nations. A plus to this volume is it does mention Israel's many overtures of peace that were routinely turned down by the aggressive Arab nations that refused to even recognize Israel's right to exist... much to their own chagrin.
An excellent review of the birth of the state of Israel from the its inception to the Suez Crises to the 1967 Six Day War and aftermath. This short read provides background information to understanding the on-going militarized Middle East conflict.
I remember the day the war started being in elementary school in Jerusalem. They released us from school around 10AM and had to walk via empty fields and barrage of bullets to my apartment in Talpiot were we stayed with all the neighbors in the shelter for 6 days.

The initial Israeli air strikes was Egypt’s Pearl Harbor. We can see from the war in the Ukraine how the survival of the Air Force changes the dynamics of a war.
