The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall

Rate this book
1887, the Cornwall coast

For years, rumors have flown through the village of Suttonsbury about Ashthorne Hall—that its occupants hoard pirate treasure, that a ghost walks its halls—but botanist Hyacinth Bell only cares about the estate's extensive, one-of-a-kind orchid collection. As an independent woman, she is eager to focus on her career, even if it means waiting to pursue a romantic relationship. After all, love—like an orchid—must be nurtured and tended before it can bloom.

What she doesn't expect is to be swept away by Lucas Harding, the manor's caretaker, upon their first meeting. He is handsome and charming, and the connection between the two is nearly instantaneous. Hyacinth is certain this autumn will be the season that everything good in her life takes root

But then strange things start happening in the seemingly empty halls of the unexplainable noises, items appearing then disappearing from her room, threatening messages, and glimpses of a woman in white who vanishes into the dark. Lucas dismisses Hyacinth's worries, insisting that there is no ghost at Ashthorne Hall, but she suspects he is withholding information and decides to investigate the mystery herself.

Armed with little more than her instincts and her courage, Hyacinth must venture deep into the shadows of Ashthorne Hall to uncover the truth Lucas is keeping secret before she herself falls victim to the dangers hidden in the estate.

2.5 stars ✨

Started out strong with the autumnal spooky vibes, but as it continued it began to look what I imagine a penny-dreadful to be. Dramatic, secretive, and a bit much at times. I thought I would round it up as a three, but I think a 2.5 might be more accurate. The more I think about it, the more I’m leaning to putting it rounded down on Goodreads, and I think I will.

This book makes me want to go out and buy a dozen new orchids. I already love the four in my collection, but now I want more, haha.

A little bit of info-dumping at the beginning, but it was setting the stage well, so I was mostly okay with it. :)

I liked how in between every chapter there was a “lament” by the “ghost” and it made my mind wonder in anticipation of who—or what—the ghost was; the male lead? an illegitimate child? the ruined daughter of the lord? I was very eager to find out who it was, but mainly hoping that it would be proven to not be an actual ghost and a little concerned to make sure it didn’t go in that direction.

Which brings me to that element: Hyacinth is excited about the thought of ghosts and making friends with one. There’s not a point where she thinks that ghosts do not exist so the white fluttering she’s seeing can’t be a ghost, because she obviously believes in them and that there must be a reason this spirit is still lingering. I don’t care for that. It honestly part of what I was concerned about going into this book, that it would be looked upon as a natural curiosity to live in a possibly haunted house and meet the spectors that are there. My Christian faith tells me to avoid that soooo 😅 that was uncomfortable. 😬 The first discussion question at the end is “do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever been in a building that felt haunted?” Like, girly pop, dear author, no, let’s not play with that idea?? That’s inviting trouble. I was glad that the final result of this book was not an actual (fake) ghost but something else (which I saw coming quickly while reading) and I might be reading a bit too much into this element of the book, but I’m going to note it anyway.

Hyacinth fell very hard, very quickly for the Male Lead—which I did like him and thought they fit together well despite being not knowing each other for a day or so—but I’ll admit that about 10% of me was suspicious about him. He’s obviously keeping secrets for her, but it doesn’t seem to be ill intent ones. That said, they did have their moments and conversations where they were absolutely so silly and borderlining on ridiculous. If someone else heard their silly conversations, I think the third party would have been looking at them like their brains were rotting due to being smitten with the other. (I am the third party.) There attraction is definitely flirting and appearance based as well, which I didn’t love.

There is one scene (a chapter, really) of them comparing a flower’s petals to her lips that had a lot of build up with staring and touching and felt very…sensuous? It was a bit much to say the least. 🙃

On another note, Hyacinth talks at one point about wanting to meet Charles Darwin because of one of his theories (not evolution) and her skeptic thoughts on it. Didn’t love seeing him lifted up as a great scientist when his major theory has lead people away from God’s creation since it was first published. 🫠

Which also, Hyacinth was supposed to be this smart, scientific woman and having all these smarts in her brain, but the girl has barely any common sense (like, heeeellllloooo? Ghosts aren’t real? 😅) and jumps to conclusions often. I wasn’t quite sure why it took her so long to figure out the mystery.

Okay, that was a lot of mini-rants and I apologize for that. I did really like the orchids as a plant person (needed more of them, truly) and the setting of this book, but there were things here and there that took away most of my enjoyment. 😞 This cover is absolutely perfect, though, I must say.

Main Content-
Ghosts and the manor being haunted are a major part of the plot and mentioned on almost every page; Hyacinth isn’t scared by the idea of ghosts and wants to make friends with the one in the manor, feeling delighted by the possible adventure; Others warn Hyacinth about spirits haunting the place (including a man saying to not assume that the ghosts are of “a wicked turn of mind” and that she might learn a thing or two from them); Hyacinth meets and talks with a “ghost” (*Major Spoilers* ); Hyacinth wonders what kind of ideas a person has about post-mortal relationships as he says about protecting the “ghost” from a human; Hyacinth thinks that something might be haunting the manor; A mention of statues of gods and angels; A mention of a woman rising up like a goddess to protect herself.

Only religious content is a couple mentions of a crumbling chapel & a mention of children making up new words to hymns they heard in church.

Hyacinth talks about Charles Darwin and wanting to meet him because of one of his theories (not evolution) as she is skeptic about it but it’s implied that she looks up to him and his research; Hyacinth longs to see the development of medication that will prevent diseases like the new smallpox vaccine and is excited about the possibility.

Fighting/Self-defense, Being held at gunpoint and holding someone at gunpoint, hearing a gunshot, seeing a gunshot wound and blood, & being concerned the person may die; Hyacinth eavesdrops & gets into locked rooms (that she was told to stay out of) with no remorse, thinking of it all as an adventure; Hyacinth has a strained relationship with her elder sister and wishes her sister would value her.

No major language, but mentions of curses said (not written out).

Mentions of deaths of family members, seeing the deaths (including a horrible, painful one), & grief; Mentions of illnesses, factory accidents, pain, & deaths (including describing ailments and eventual deaths from factory jobs, up to a few sentences); Mentions of a gunshot, guns, wounds/injuries, pain, blood/bleeding, & being concerned someone may die (up to a few sentences); Mentions of stealing, thieves, vandalism, & threats; Mentions of alcohol, tobacco, & a man drinking and smoking (implied that he does both a lot); A few mentions of some who are sick being forced into an asylum and fighting going there; A few mentions of lies, lying, & deceit; A mention of some people who “tended toward melancholy”.

2 fingers-to-lips touches,
2 hand/fingers kisses,
1 cheek kiss,
11 kisses with little-to-no details,
Staring a lips; Remembering kisses, touches, & embraces (up to a couple sentences).

Touches, Embraces, Dancing, Hand holding, Nearness, & Noticing (including muscles, all up to a few sentences); Imagining all of the prior (up to a couple sentences); Flirting & Blushes; Falling in love, attraction, & lots of the emotions; Hyacinth and the ML have a discussion/experiment about her lips being as soft as petals (this lasts at least half a chapter and ends with a kiss with little details, but the build-up lasts a while); Hyacinth and the ML also cuddle in a bed at one point towards the end; Hyacinth accidentally discusses (flower) reproduction with a man who isn’t a scientist and quickly changes the conversation; Mentions of kisses & kissing; Mentions of flirting, flirts, & blushes.

“Orchids and ghosts and romance. What more could any woman want?”

Ah, if only it could have been enough for me, then I wouldn't feel so wrong about judging it so harshly. For while it may not be what I'm usually prone to end, the premise, itself, could have been such an atmospheric one with a sombre tone to it that could have made me more drawn towards it, but it sadly failed to do so. 'What more could this adventure offer if, indeed, it included a haunting?' I do want to commend the author on the direction she chose to take the mystery in - one that was intriguing and alluring, but tinged with an awful truth that made Hyacinth's determination to uncover the secrets of the shadows that lingered in The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall all the more captivating. 😔

The trouble with exploring dark corners,” Hyacinth explained to the reduced but still beautiful Eleanor, “is that in order to see into one clearly, you must put your back to the others.

With a name like Hyacinth Bell, it seems odd that her fascination lay primarily with orchids, but it certainly explained why she was such an exemplary botanist - one that was hired by Mr. to care for his own personal and prized orchid collection. But, even her interest in taking care of his beautiful gardens isn't enough to draw the intrepid, if not free-spirited and willfully determined Hyacinth who can't help but feel a strange ghostly presence that lurks in the mansion she's residing in. 'Ashthorne Hall was hiding something, and Hyacinth would discover what it was.' 🧐 Her passion for caring for the orchids was admirable, if not, very pleasant to read - how deeply she was invested in their care and the considerate way in which she treated them, as a friend. It was an interesting contrast to how very invested she in being more adventurous and daring - someone who enjoyed aspects of the forbidden and the mysterious and someone not so easily defeated, she's more than ever to see out the truth behind it - even if it means for her heart to beat rampantly whenever she is in the presence of the dashingly handsome caretaker, Lucas Harding - a man who seems to be harboring his own secrets and may very well know more about the mysterious and suspicious ongoings that he lets on. 😟

But I concede that you have conquered me completely in every matter of love. You won my heart.

I don't know what exactly entails as a proper Romance Victorian, but even I was a bit alarmed at how instantly attracted Hyacinth fell for Lucas' charms; there is a difference between being a romantic and a hopeless romantic, and her blase attitude about the whole ordeal and her attraction for him felt even unsettling at how not so unsettled she was by it! *laughs* Still, she and Lucas shared some very sweet, if not endearing moments together, one that quelled the romance in her most ardently so. Lucas' generosity and attentiveness, while weathered by a troubled consternation that seemed plagued by his past sadness made him a worthy candidate for Hyacinth's kind-hearted nature. 🩶🩶 'How silly would she sound if she confessed that she already admired him, possibly even adored him?' It was amusing to see how besotted they were for each other so very soon after their first meeting, how very quickly he was able to charm her off his feet. Her personality isn't really something I should hold against her, moreso so how very quickly she was charmed by his charms. And he so readily smitten by her, too! For despite how readily and heavily everyone was to dismiss her of her inquiring fears and curiosity of the ongoings of the mansion, she never faltered in her courage or determination in getting to know the truth. 😥

The world was full of grief, and the best way out of it was through. Often, the only way through was alone.

So, it definitely was a relief to see her rational side appear, even if it was actually aided by her own genuine and apparent thrill in such happenings - 'fantasy and mysticism were much more fun', purely a romantic at heart who desired to be 'like a character in a novel, and nothing could please her more.' And when the truth did come to light - I was disturbingly shocked at how shockingly tragic it was. 🥺 It reeled in the notion that not everything has to be hauntingly cryptic to be painfully horrid and that was a realistic direction that I applaud the author for taking. It shed light on a part of history that hurt many who were affected by it and also made the reasoning behind the cryptic actions all the more understandable. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 And the author did attempt to capture that atmospheric unease and unrest of troubles that seemed to have swept the forsaken mansion; till it was revealed, the fear of danger was palpable in Hyacinth's thoughts and actions, despite how much it excited her. It built up convincingly, till she finally was able to show just how capable a botanist she was, as well as the fiercely strong-willed and compassionate person she was. 'Your kindness, your heart, the way you love' certainly makes her a worthy heroine for a cozy, if not, light-hearted historical romance. 💮

9/24 This was pretty good. I'm not sure I'm the right audience for this time period. I thought the women were full of contradictions, which left me feeling confused in my read. But that could actually be an aspect of the period.

Atmospheric, mysterious, romantic, and poignant! The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall immediately reminded me of Jane Eyre and Beauty and the Beast. There’s the spooky mansion with a closed off area where no one is supposed to go, rumors of ghosts and hidden treasure, and rather than roses, there are gorgeous orchids. But, this book is definitely its own thing and I loved how a tragic, often overlooked moment in history was woven into the story.

Hyacinth Bell is a botanist who’s worked hard to secure her prestigious reputation with orchids. She accepts a position at Ashthorne Hall to care for the family’s prized orchid collection while they’re away in India. Her first visit to the Hall is marred by a wind storm. Cue the ominous music. And, her welcome is anything but cordial as she finds herself regaled with stories of ghosts and a less than friendly housekeeper. There’s definitely a mystery here just begging for Hyacinth to solve.

What she doesn’t expect, is the Hall’s handsome caretaker, Lucas Harding. He’s a breath of fresh air and a charming addition to the dreary Hall. She’s immediately taken with him and finds herself easily falling in love. But, does Lucas know more than he lets on about the strange goings on in the house and can she trust him? As threatening notes, strange noises, and items disappear and then reappear in her room, she’s determined more than ever to discover the truth.

I loved the feelings the story evoked and found myself on the edge of my seat when our intrepid heroine wanders Ashthorne Hall. There’s definitely a creepy factor in addition to the sweet, whirlwind, friends to more romance. I don’t want to say much more to spoil the mystery except it was unexpectedly shocking and sad, and well worth the build up to the exciting conclusion. I was so happy with the outcome of the story.

Highly recommend to those who enjoy gothic romances and don’t mind a little spooky suspense. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided. 4.5 to 5 stars!

4.5 * rounding up.

Very gothicesque read! And look at that cover! It definitely sets all the vibes for this book!

I loved the more somber and dark vibes that Ashthorne Hall gave off. Kind of reminded me of when Jane arrives at Thornfield Hall to work for Mr. Rochester in the novel, Jane Eyre. There's a mystery and secret that makes everyone believe the estate is haunted.

Hyacinth Bell finds herself very isolated and warned to not go exploring the home, keep to her work, and all will be well. Duh, duh, duuuuuhhhh!!!! Of course she's intrigued now, and with all the strange happenings, she's determined to figure out what is going on. And take care of her orchids! Which by the way, is not easy at all! Have you tried to keep orchids alive? I'm happy to say that I've been pretty successful recently. So I loved the parts that talked about orchids and the other botanist talk. So interesting to think about what was believed years and years ago and to see the discoveries and understanding happen to help us now, as well as all of the continued study happening in botany.

I loved the developing friendship and more between Hyacinth and the manor's caretaker, Lucas Harding. Discovering more about his history and the history of Ashthorne Hall added to the mystery. And when Hyacinth knows that a man has been sneaking around the Hall, watch out! Everything is going to be raised up a notch and she'll have to be quick thinking.

There's more that I want to talk about that I found so interesting and sad about a point in history. But if I did, I'd spoil the mystery and surprise. But I really liked how the author used this in her story and how it all panned out!

And now cue ominous warning... Watch out for danger, it's close behind you Miss Hyacinth!!!!

I hope you enjoy this one like I did!!!

Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril. Nothing further than a few sweet kisses.

The premise sounded very promising. Victorian Cornwall. A dreary manor. Ghost stories. Mystery. Basically every thing I’d want in a cosy English mystery. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my cup of tea.

The pacing was very slow with long sections of description & narrative often unbroken by dialogue. I never really connected with Hyacinth as a main character, and her romance with Lucas felt shallow, focused on looks & touches & flirtations instead of character.

The mystery itself was the most interesting part, albeit grotesque, and provided an insight into the need for reforms in the working conditions of the match girls.

uhhhh... unfortunately, this wasn't for me. I didn't like "The Art of Love and Lies" either, but I thought, perhaps, that was just a fluke and I'd give the author another go. I will say this one improved over that one in the enjoyment department, but that's a low bar, so... yeah.

Hyacinth just kinda baffled me, I guess? Like, girly doesn't even hesitate to pick locks and go where she's been expressly told not to go, even though she's an employee of this estate and does not actually live here. (She's like "why would Mrs. Carter hide things from me??" and I'm like "bestie, perhaps she locked doors because she doesn't want your grubby hands all in her business??") The romance also gave me the ick several times (not waving red flags, though, I'll give them that)

The actual mystery/plot? That I was into. I really liked [character who's name I'll redact for spoiler reasons], they almost saved the book for me. And I will say, I don't know when (if ever) I've read a book with a botanist at the forefront. So that's cool. (not that she spent a ton of time with the flowers... she was more interested in making doe-eyes at Lucas)

So yeah, this was a bummer. But that's okay! I can see how it would work for other people, it just didn't work for me. 2.5 stars.

If you like your books a tiny bit spooky, a little mysterious and romantic then this is the book for you! I really enjoyed this book! I loved Hyacinth and Lucas. I thought Hyacinth was cute with her talking to her flowers. I loved the mysterious moments of this book and trying to figure out what was going on. The romance part was not my favorite but still fine. It was also interesting to learn about match factory workers. I think Fans of Jane Eyre would love this story! Overall, a clean romance and I really enjoyed the story. Definitely recommend!

'Ashthorne Hall held more secrets than it was possible to believe.'

Oooookay, The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall and Rebecca Anderson- I see you!

This book is a delicious, gothic-style romantic mystery that had me on the edge of my seat! I usually wait for fall to read these types of books, but this one was totally worth reading at any time of the year. The focus on the flowers, orchids in particular gave it a nice spring touch ;)

The romance was super fun. I enjoyed the "experiments" our FMC, Hyacinth, conducted as her feelings grew for Lucas, the manor's caretaker. Anything in the name of science, right?! The romance was the perfect touch to balance out the intrigue and mystery. I would say it was half and half for both!

The mystery was haunting in such a delightful way.

"I feel so foolish. I must be the only woman in the world to find herself scared out of her wits by not hearing a ghost."

While there is nothing otherworldly happening in the manor or on the grounds of the manor, the Cornwall moors descriptions make this a perfectly, haunting type of read. I absolutely loved how information was given to the reader. I LOVED the historical facts about the people living at this time. The author's notes at the end were informative, and a little sad to hear what conditions were like in factories.

Bottom line, I really enjoyed this read. It was historically informative, had a great setting, the mystery held me captive and the romance absolutely swoony! If any of those interest you, I think you would love this read as well!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: mystery, mild violence, descriptions of medical diseases, loss of loved ones (not on page), botany, romance-kisses only.

Read if you like:
Regency London
Wholesome romance
Haunted mansions

Hyacinth Bell accepts a position to care for the exotic orchid collection of Lord Whitmore at his residence Ashthorne hall while he is away. The book drew me in with promises of Regency London's posh society and the eerie setting of Ashthorne Hall. I was excited to unravel a tale filled with mystery and romance. The vivid descriptions of ballrooms and fragrant orchids set the stage wonderfully.

However, as I read on, I found myself wishing for more excitement in the plot. The story took its time, and not much action happened, leaving the anticipated thrilling moments wanting. The romantic aspect, though sweet, seemed out of place, like a flower blooming at the wrong time.

But, here's the thing—the book was an easy, quick read, finished in a day. This could be a plus if you're into swift, uncomplicated reads. If you love Regency romance and don't mind a light thrill, this book might suit your taste.

In summary, if you're picking this up, expect a simple, laid-back experience rather than an adrenaline-pumping adventure. It's like a gentle dance, taking small, measured steps through history's corridors.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for letting me read an advanced copy of this book for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A gothic romance with a haunted estate, mysterious characters, and hidden secrets.

The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall by @beccawilhite is a story about Hyacinth, a young lady charged at taking care of the orchids at a mysterious manor. It's there she finds a haunted atmosphere, hidden passages, and an unsolved mystery.

The romance was very insta-love. I thought it was insta-attraction but it quickly turned into a fast paced relationship that I didn't quite understand. Especially with all the secrets and haunted nature of the setting and storyline, I didn't really expect the FMC to easily trust someone so quickly. In turn, it made me not like her as much.

The twist in this story turned out to be a very interesting historical medical element that I found very intriguing and unique for a historical romance. I loved that piece. In all honesty, it's my favorite thing in the book.

All in all I think those who like gothic romance will enjoy this story. However, for a proper romance book, the romance needed more development.

Thank you Shadow Mountain for my gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.

This book has all the makings of an intriguing gothic historical! The author did a great job of setting the tone and atmosphere for the reader right from the start with descriptive imagery of the coastline and estate. However I was left wanting a bit as the descriptions were numerous and I felt as though it really slowed the pacing of this novel. I had a difficult time liking the heroine. She was cheerful which was a bright spot in this book, however she came across a bit silly and somewhat juvenile at times. I am never a fan of instant love in a story and this happened so quickly I almost didn’t trust that it was real. The air of mystery was lost in pages of tending plants and wordy details . I was hoping this book would be more mysterious and chilling and it just didn’t deliver. Overall if you are looking for a slower paced mystery that eases you into the story you might enjoy this one!

Hyacinth Bell is a botanist specializing in orchids. She's beyond excited when Mr. Whitbeck invites her to Ashthorne Hall to care for his orchid collection while he and his family are in India. Hyacinth is not prepared for a storm on the last leg of her long journey, the warnings she receives about not wandering Ashthorne Hall and it being haunted by spirits, or the unwelcoming housekeeper.

Despite the eerie winds whipping off the Cornwall coast at night and being admonished to avoid locked doors and never enter the north wing of the house, Hyacinth finds a couple of bright spots while settling into her new life at the Hall: the hot house, where she cares for the orchids she loves and her developing friendship with the caretaker, Lucas Harding.

I haven't read a Gothic novel in quite awhile and this one got me in the mood right away: a storm across the moors, a night arrival to a large estate with only one window alight, long dark hallways, the howling wind, and weird sounds at night. It reminded me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and the mystery had me turning pages quickly! This story is not all dark and gloomy though, I liked the lighter moments such as Hyacinth talking to the plants in the hot house and her growing relationship with Lucas.

I don't want to spoil the mystery but I really liked how the author took a real event in history and wove it into this wonderful spooky story. I found the author's notes at the end informative and there are also discussion questions if you chose this book for your book club.

Not my cup of tea. The book got the gothic feel right. But there are limited characters (Eleanor the plant does not count -_- ) and I did not get on with any of them. They felt pretty flat and Hyacinth irked me. The plot is pretty slow. I grew impatient with the laments at the beginning of every chapter and feeling like nothing had happened in the first half of the book, so I DNF at apx 50%.

Gothic feel mystery/romance

The main characters are somewhat strangely flat, given the substance of the storyline.
I found it hard to relate to them.
Hyacinth Bell is a botanist who goes to a windswept mansion, Ashthorne Hall, on the moors of Cornwall alongside pounding ocean. She is being paid to look after Mr. Charles Whitbeck’s large collection of orchids whilst he’s in India, hunting for more.
Hyacinth is warned off by a whiskey sodden ruffian who’s assisting in the local gardening shop.
At Ashthorne Hall Hyacinth finds a dour housekeeper, Mrs. Carter, who warns her to lock her bedroom door and not to wander the hallways at night.
She also meets the handsome estate’s caretaker, Lucas Harding, who is the housekeeper’s nephew.
But strange things happen in the night and Hyacinth is determined to find out what’s happening. Is there a ghost, pirates, something else?
What Hyacinth confronts is both shocking and heartbreaking. A scourge on innovation without care. But will she live to tell her tale?
This was I interesting but I wasn’t wholly engaged.

A Shadow Mountain ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

The cover is great and sets the vibe of this moody gothic type mystery. Hyacinth Bell is an expert on orchids and travels to Ashthorne Hall in Cornwall to stay at an estate and care for the owner's prized orchids while he travels to India. The only people in residence are the housekeeper and her nephew Lucas Harding who is the caretaker. It is 1887 and Hyacinth is an independent woman who doesn’t love the bustle of London. The house isn’t welcoming and many doors and areas are off limits. And Hyacinth keeps catching glimpses of a figure in white.

The book sets a nice tone of mystery, darkness and secrets in the house. It is quick to read but the plotting is slow. And truly not very much happens. I like the real things that the book shines a light on but I wasn’t swept up in the interaction between Lucas and Hyacinth. This is a wholesome, clean romance and it was nice to have a gothic tone instead of a more traditional London based romance. But I wanted a bit more to earn a high rating. I can see others enjoyed it more so I am in the minority. (3.5 Stars)

What I liked about this book:

* Great gothic vibes. It was spooky without being scary.
* The main character's interest and competency with botany. I love depictions of women with lots of scientific knowledge in Victorian times (in other times too, but it works so well in that era).
* A twist with an insight into history that won't be shared here, because that would be a spoiler, but I loved that element.
* The romance was completely clean, so my two teens could read the book as well.

Thanks to Shadow Mountain publishing for the gifted copy!

For fans of Jane Eyre, this one’s for you. 🤍 Thank you @shadowmountainpub for the arc copy of The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall🤍

This book was a story full of creaking floorboard, locked doors, and a haunted manor….

While I wouldn’t classify this book as scary, it definitely gave me some of those spooky vibes, while still being cozy and romantic.

I thought the romance was sweet and it had such a Jane Eyre feeling to it.

Read if you enjoy:
• haunted manors
• flower love
• a mystery
• the good kind of instant attraction
• atmospheric reads

A perfectly delicious gothic romance. With a house full of secrets containing a personality as thick as Manderley and a heroine every bit as adventurous and imaginative as Catherine Morland it made my skin crawl in the best ways.

I’m not sure what I loved more the incredible descriptions that added to the eeriness, the well placed ebb and flow of tension or the way she was able to leave me completely swoony over a simple brush of rose petals.

The character development is done subtly so even the nature of each character is a mystery to unfold.
The setting and the powerful ending left me thoroughly delighted.

This probably deserved 3.5 stars but it dragged a little in parts. I really liked Hyacinth’s character. She was strong and funny. I would have given it more than 3 stars but the ending was a little weird and seemed a bit abrupt but overall worth reading.

This should give you an idea of how scattered my brain is right now.

I got this from the library as it was the paper copy of a Netgalley book I was supposed to read. I started it, quickly realized I was not enjoying it, told myself if it wasn't a Netgalley book, I'd DNF it but because it was Netgalley, I would make the effort to finish it. Finished the dang thing.

It's not even my Netgalley book. That honor goes to a different Proper Romance title that I also have out from the library right now. (I know, I know, not the point of Netgalley, but life do be like that sometimes)

Long story short, this is that particular brand of clean historical romance writing I just don't like but struggle to describe why. It smacks of juvenility and has far too many "Oh, how she wished she could make him smile again" / dialogue the author thinks is witty but isn't. The romance was insta-love. The characters were pretty boring The plot had some interesting historical inclusions, but failed to keep my interest. Just not for me.

I did think this was a Beauty and the Beast retelling for a hot minute (okay, like half the book), but it didn't go that direction in the end.

A very Gothic cover that completely points to a deliciously Gothic story.

When Hyacinth arrives at Ashthorne Hall to care for the orchids, she finds a mansion full of secrets and becomes surrounded by intrigue and suspense. She meets Lucas, the caretaker, and they become friends, despite his keeping secrets from her.

A delightful, entertaining read!

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

DNF @ 31%

I’m really striking out on my spooky reads this year. The dialogue feels very clunky and doesn’t flow well, the romance is way too insta (like, laughably so), and nothing is really happening. It started out atmospheric and spooky, but I’m getting really tired of reading about this lady talking to her orchids like they’re friends.

Dear @beccawilhite, this is such an intriguing and enchanting, gothic-style mysterious, clean romantic story, that had me on the edge of my seat with the tone you set. I loved how you precisely balanced the romance, with the intrigue and mystery. I found the mystery to be haunting and sad in a lovely way. I thoroughly enjoyed Hyacinth’s personality, and her dear relationship with the treasured orchids. She herself, is a rare beauty as well. This is a unique and tender, mysterious story worth reading!

“I concede that you have conquered me completely in every matter of love. You have won my heart.”

Thank you Shadow Mountain for my free ARC of The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall by Rebecca Anderson — available now!

Read this if you:
🌷 have a passion for botany and/or gardening
👻 love a bit of a gothic mystery — old house, shady characters
🥂 cheer for strong, independent ladies living the life they choose

Hyacinth has just taken a new position at remote Ashthorne Hall, caring for the owner's extensive orchid collection while he is away. But Ashthorne is stranger than she expected — so many locked doors and an unfriendly housekeeper make her wonder what the gigantic house is hiding. The bright spot is the groundskeeper, Lucas, who takes an interest in Hyancinth's work but still seems to be hiding something from her. What on earth is going on?

I loved this little novel! Hyacinth is spunky, bold, and unafraid to be independent in a time where that was not at all the norm for women. I really enjoyed the gothic vibes and the combination of mystery and romance contained in here. The mystery was a bit transparent for me at a certain point, but didn't reduce my enjoyment of the reveal of the action after that, and I spent a ton of time researching a specific thing once I finished the book. Want to know what it was? You'll have to read to find out!

Hyacinth is hired to care for the extensive collection of orchids housed in the hothouse of Ashthorne Hall while the family is away in India. She finds the empty estate to be a bit creepy with the unfriendly and restrictive housekeeper and the rumors of a ghost.

Very intriguing premise and I loved Hyacinth’s interest in botany and her pursuit of her passions. I also loved the other female character that is introduced later in the book and found her story to be gut wrenching.

BUT (a really big but), I did NOT like the romance. It was far too instalovey to be believable. Plus, they were not anywhere near the same station in society which was never addressed AND they never maintained proper courting etiquette for the time period. Honestly, they were alone kissing a TON. Plus, it seems weird to me that they would be married at Ashthorne Hall…did they ask the owners’ permission? Probably not, huh? Seems like the whole lot of them were just traipsing around doing whatever they liked as if they owned the place.

"Orchids and ghosts and romance. What more could any woman want?"

I've read a couple of Rebecca Anderson's books before and I thought the cover of this book was completely captivating and as an orchid lover myself, it peaked my curiosity.  I loved the beginning of the story, and the Cornwall setting.  It was atmospheric, and laid down the foundation for a gothic vibe mystery.  However,  I felt the romance overshadowed the mystery, which I figured out pretty easily, and I found it to be VERY quick to the point of being unbelievable. It's odd, because that usually doesn't bother me but this time it did. The FMC seemed immature to me, she had herself practically married to the MMC the moment she clapped eyes on him.  Apparently I'm not a believer of love at first sight.  The romance was clean, kisses only. I really enjoyed the references to my fellow orchid friends and I liked how she talked to the plants and even need them.  I would have loved if the mystery took a more prominent role and the gothic vibe had deepened to a greater degree as the story progressed.  I liked the inclusion of the match girls and their plight but also wished that thread had been explored more in the story.

I can't see this book being re-read for me.  Maybe my expectations were too high.  If you enjoy Joanna Davidson Politano or Abigail Wilson there is a good chance you will enjoy this book.

Thank you, Rebecca Anderson and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This was a fun book to read in October. Full of mystery, intrigue, and maybe a ghost it was a good spooky read for a regency era lover.

Come to take care of an orchid collection at a Ashthorne Hall, Hyacinth is intrigued and excited when she learns of rumors of treasure and ghosts in the grand estate. As she tries to learn more she encounters the handsome caretaker Lucas. They make an instant connection but as time passes she knows there are secrets he keeps hidden. As the rumors become more of a reality and as danger lurks near will he trust her enough with those secrets.

This was a fast-paced and clean read. The romance is a little rushed in my opinion as I’m not a huge fan of instant love. But despite that I did enjoy their journey. The author also dives into some pretty heavy topics of the time, which I thought was a refreshing change. Overall I would highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Rebecca Anderson for the opportunity to read The Orchids of Ashthorne Hall.

What a fantastic read. This book was haunting and eerie and beautiful and thrilling. The chemistry between Lucas and Hyacinth was phenomenal. Watching their initial attraction deepen into true regard and then love was a joy. The more mysterious elements of the book were outstanding as well. I loved the laments at the beginning of each chapter, especially 1-10. I absolutely loved this and will definitely be reading it again.
