Money makes the world go round as can a few too many strong drinks. But when Benny, in a fit of sobriety, agrees to do a pre-Advent favour for Irving Braxiatel, little does she suspect that a bit of corporate schmoozing with a fast food magnate is going to lead her into the biggest spin she’s experienced for a very long time.

“FILTHY LUCRE”

I soldi fanno girare il mondo, così come qualche drink di troppo. Ma quando Benny, in un momento di sobrietà, accetta di fare un favore pre-Avvento per Irving Braxiatel, non sospetta che un po' di socializzazione aziendale con un magnate del fast food la porterà alla più grande sbandata che ha sperimentato da molto tempo.
In un tour toccata e fuga dei pianeti di frontiera, incontra luoghi di sepoltura misteriosi, pistole e spade, gambe e artigli, tesori perduti, combattimenti mortali, cospirazioni, spuntini raffinati e rivoltanti e un omino chiamato Perkin.
Oh, e ancora amore e guerra.
Nel frattempo, Jack deve affrontare forse il virus informatico più irritante mai creato, e Ruth deve arrampicarsi attraverso le viscere di una nave precipitata con "L'Uomo con il Tatuaggio Lupesco".
E questa sarebbe dovuta essere la stagione delle festività?

Filthy Lucre è, come dice il titolo, incentrato su due diverse storie di gente così ossessionata dal denaro da arrivare a compiere azioni abominevoli.
Il libro alterna capitoli tra il prima e il dopo, riprendendo l'ultima frase di un capitolo come prima frase del successivo, ma in un contesto diverso. Un filone racconta di una nave rubata in avaria, uno schianto su un pianeta popolato da mostri letali e la successiva fuga a rotta di collo dalle suddette creature tra i corridoi dell'astronave distrutta e in procinto di affondare. Anche se è connesso al resto della storia, i motivi diventano rilevanti solo alla fine. La parte in cui Ruth e Benny devono scappare in compagnia di due criminali per evitare di diventare il pranzo di quei mostri è fin troppo lunga ed è a tutti gli effetti una storia nella storia. Risulta essere la parte più noiosa, perché non fanno altro che correre per dei corridoi senza molta suspense, e se già sappiamo che Benny e Ruth ne usciranno senza un graffio, poco ci importa degli altri due personaggi.
L'altra metà del libro è invece più interessante. Benny è stata mandata da Irving a fare public relations con un miliardario che, oltre a finanziare l'attività di Irving, è anche un grande investitore in attività archeologiche. Adam Yarryl è affascinante ed erudito e in men che non si dica riesce ad incantare anche Benny. Ça va sans dir, non è tutto oro quel che luccica, e l'attività di Adam potrebbe essere più losca di quello che appare.
L'alternanza tra passato e presente è un po' confusa a volte, rendendo non immediato quando sta avvenendo una determinata azione e a volte lasciando dei vuoti temporali che non vengono esplicitati. Ha il vantaggio però di mantenere il mistero fino alla fine. Ritengo comunque che molte parti siano state trascinate troppo a lungo, mentre altre assai più interessanti sono volate via frettolosamente.
Per quanto riguarda i personaggi, Jack non ha una grande funzione e rimane per la maggior parte del tempo lontano dall'azione, mentre a Ruth viene affibbiato il ruolo di damigella in difficoltà. Mi hanno fatto piacere i camei di Peter e Irving, anche se molto brevi, ma almeno forniscono un piccolo scorcio di come si stanno sviluppando i rispettivi rapporti con Bernice.
Per quanto riguarda la nostra protagonista, ha dei momenti di grande azione, specialmente sul finale, mentre meno razionale appare la sua improvvisa infatuazione per un personaggio, anche se viene successivamente spiegata.
Ho però apprezzato, all'inizio, avere una breve descrizione della città di Legion al di fuori del White Rabbit, dato che finora le storie non sono mai state ambientate nella metropoli vera e propria. Certo è che si tratta comunque solo di un accenno, perché ben presto la narrazione passa di nuovo al di fuori del pianeta. È un po' un peccato che questa ambientazione non sia ancora stata sfruttata appieno, anche perché ci viene continuamente ripetuto quanto si tratti di un luogo pericoloso, senza che ci venga mai mostrato davvero.
In ogni caso, ad eccezione di alcune parti della sottotrama che si sarebbero potute tranquillamente tagliare, è un libro interessante, come al solito autoconclusivo anche se accenna un po' di più alle relazioni tra i personaggi.

The one got started a while back in my "Bernice Summerfield" book & audio marathon. It's a nicely written adventure story with a bit of a look at business world and how corporate sponsership of archaeology can be twisted.
Wilst the regulars are well characterised and the writing style is fun and lively I didn't think there was much to it I'm afraid (sorry guys), also the switching between two plot lines both featuring Benny a few weeks apart in her time line seemed and odd choice as I didn't really feel that they informed the other very much and could have been separate novellas for all I could see.
Fun and passed a few hours by.

Another short and digestible Bernice Summerfield novel, with two nicely intertwined timelines about a crashed spaceship and a randy corporate sponsor, it only becoming clear at the end of a short book how the two are related to each other. Minor but enjoyable.

An alright book. Might have worked better as an audio drama but it works as a novel. This isn't really a book that stands out.

This book is set in the midst of the New Frontiers box set - after the first story "A Handful of Dust"

It was very enjoyable. All of the chapters have a monetary tie in their title. Most chapters begin with a line similar to that which ended the previous chapter. The catch is that their are two parts of the story being told that alternate most chapters. One part is of the story takes place several days or perhaps a week before the other part. The focus is mostly on Benny and Ruth, but Jack is also involved and there are brief scenes with Peter and Irving. I could hear most of the voices of the actors from the audios in my head as I read the book.

It took a while for me to actually piece together the flashback/flash forward-structure of the story, but that's probably only because I'm thick. Anyway, once I got behind it I found the storytelling quite neatly done, but I wish that more had been done with it and that there was more mirroring and connecting between the chapters. And the showdown was a bit of a letdown. But well, overall a neat addition to the Bernice Summerfield books.

Quick enjoyable read, though I wish it had more depth. I missed the repetition device between chapters for a while as I was taking breaks between each, but liked this once I noticed it. The characters weren't particularly multi-faceted and I'm not sure the whole story held together, but was a fairly entertaining runaround.

A cracking Bernice Summerfield book! It's set during the new boxed set, New Frontiers, and successfully throws Benny's 'new' team of her, Ruth and Jack into a mystery style adventure featuring a Bond-esque villain and a galaxy spanning plot with some nice twists and turns.

A good read. With the traditional Benny twists and some great chapter hand overs.
