This is a terrific book for improving your mental game - an often overlooked, but critical area of playing any sport. What is most interesting is the approach. Written as a duologue, teacher and student share their learnings on a particular aspect of the game. You see the thinking and the application from a few different lenses and it makes it easy to understand. The book is filled with interesting tables you can easily fill out in your head to help you evaluate your approach to a given skill. I believe Pickleball is a very cerebral sport, and I really enjoyed this book.
One of my favorite chapters was on Partnerships, a critical element of the sport and life in general. Dayne Gingrich provides each aspect (selecting, ending, nurturing) of playing partner sports, and Jill Martin does a superb job of tying the theory to real life.
I'd be remiss not to mention how, from the introduction, it is clear that this book has lessons on the court and off. Whether playing Pickleball, at work or at home, the lessons here are in life. Great, very enjoyable read.
This book offers practical advice and a roadmap on how to improve your mental toughness in pickleball. I found myself taking notes on concepts that resonated with me and creating a “to do list” that I plan on tackling immediately. I particularly loved Jill’s point of view because it mirrored my own journey over the last three years since picking up a paddle for the first time and becoming obsessed with the game. I’ve also had the pleasure of taking a 4 hour private group lesson with Dayne - his no nonsense, tell it to you straight coaching style was amazing and I learned a lot from him. I feel the same way about this book.
