The Fine Print

Rate this book
If the plan doesn’t work change the plan not the goal.

Those words become the anthem to Soraya Gault’s life in ways she never could have imagined. Soraya sacrifices a lot to secure her future and take care of her family but it never feels like enough.

Zamaseon Hendricks works hard and lives by his own rules. There is only one woman in his life who he is willing to risk it all for. Even if risking it all means completely altering his life’s plan, what is required of him is as good as done.

Zamaseon and Soraya have common goals but their only option to reach the finish line means falling in line with an unconventional plan.

Reading the fine print is easy enough but as soon as the ink dries their worlds collide in the best and worst ways possible.

Listen, if y’all want marriage of convenience to be my new favorite trope then, just say that. I loved this book! The Fine Print is exactly what T’Lyn labels her books as. Love mixed with romance and hood. Mase is in denial. His grandmother has been diagnosed with cancer but, he refuses to acknowledge the severity of her illness. With the passing of his grandfather three years ago, he can’t imagine doing life without Granny so he would rather pretend she's not sick at all. Mase is droppin’ her off at chemo like he’s droppin’ her off at the BINGO hall. It also doesn’t help that Granny hasn’t been completely honest about her diagnosis and has downplayed the seriousness of her illness. Soraya is a native of Sudan who came to the states on a student visa to earn her nursing degree. She has since become an American citizen and she’s working on sponsoring her family to get them out of war-torn Sudan and moved to the states as well. But, sponsoring a family is expensive and, no matter how much she saves, it doesn’t seem to be enough. Granny has taken a liking to her oncology nurse so, she may have the solution to Soraya's problem. She just has to convince Mase to finally accept the inheritance left to him by his grandfather and the stipulation that comes along with it. The Fine Print was such an enjoyable book. It gives you the perfect amount of hood and romance with a little bit of suspense thrown in. Soraya and Mase come from different cultural backgrounds but, they still managed to balance each other and were exactly what one another needed. And, I absolutely adored Uri. She’s the BFF we all deserve. My only complaint is that we never learned what was in the letter Granny left to Mase. I was dying (no pun intended) to read her final words to him. Other than that, I would definitely recommend you add this one to your TBR.

Ok…Mase & Saraya

Initially, for me Mase was a little too aggressive….But, he definitely redeemed himself. The way he loved Ms. Eunice and then Saraya….it was definitely pure. Yurt did get on my nerves a bit….they were a little too free with the B word….However, I enjoyed this couple’s journey to HEA.

2nd read was the audiobook…love the story….not pleased with the narrators….narration can make or break a story for me…. Fortunately., for me I previously read the story.

These marriage of convenience tropes are skyrocketing to one of my favorites and T’Lyn delivered with this one!

Zamaseon is young reckless and making money by any means necessary! If it don’t make dollars then it don’t make sense. He’s set to claim an inheritance left by his grandfather and the only stipulation to claim the money is to get married. Mase wanted no parts of this plan and for the meantime, his grandmother let him be.

Things changed after his grandmothers health takes a turn for the worse and in order to give her her last dying wish, as well as help her oncology nurse in the process, he decides to get married.

Mase thought he was going to do him but I guess he didn’t read the fine print that said he was going to fall hopelessly in love in the process.

I absolutely loved Soraya and how she stepped up to be exactly what Mase needed. She was selfless and nurturing and Ms. Eunice couldn’t have selected a better wife for him! 🥰🥰

This started off well I was enjoying Za and Raya’s budding relationship /marriage but the plot split 10 different ways at 65% in.

Where did his daddy come from?
Why do we have to deal with Ree shit and Vince’s shit, it’s too much.
Vince’s shit— it’s getting really weird —how did we get here.
Why he treat that girl like that when all she did was love and support him and his grannie
D is not an apology (it’s for after the apology and even that depends on the level of disrespect).

The element I dislike the most, the negligent regard for the Islamic faith. This is something a beta reader or editor should have addressed. The disregard for the spiritually and cultural values /beliefs was disappointing.

A friend of mine said this about their faith as a Muslim: “I will never compromise my faith for anyone or anything & I expect the same from others no matter their religious background”.

I say all that to say—if you don’t know, ask and even if you think you know, verify. Choose the path of least harm.

arrange marriage me !!

Ms. Eunice most definitely knew what she was putting in place.
I loved Soraya she was just so pure and genuine , with the love and care she showed Ms.Eunice. Grinding it out as a nurse to get here family to the US was her only goal.
Mase wasn’t looking to settle down or even a girlfriend, but his grandma knew better. Baby he loved Soraya something bad once got to know her.
Perfect match

Ma picked a great wife for Mase. However Ray was beyond naive to Vince anybody could see something was wrong with him. Uri was an amazing friend. I didn’t understand the reason for the father reappearing in the book at the end. Also why mention Ma letter to not even include it in the story 😒. This was a cute arranged marriage story

“Let them watch me love on you.” This quote sums up The Fine Print. An intriguing marriage of convenience story; that had me rooting for the couple to win. I wanted to know how the two cultures would merge, as one of the characters is Sudanese. There’s an emphasis on doing anything for the family. Readers can expect a blend of romance, friendly banter, cultural references, and a realistic view of love and loss. One thing T’Lyn does well is pen a male character who is rough around the edges, but for his woman, he loves hard. Zamaseon is bae worthy! He would do anything for his grandmother, but when she proposed for him to marry- that is where Mase drew the line. Soraya is an Oncology nurse; she is determined to help her family flee from Sudan. The two were complete opposites, but getting to experience their love was truly captivating. I was impressed with the story, and I think it translated well on the page. The cultural differences were a good addition; the author did her due diligence by representing Soraya’s family. Another fantastic story!

I had an arc copy from the author, all thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed this story, it was too cute. Mase and Soraya may not have been looking for a relationship, let alone a marriage, but they were exactly what the other needed.

I love the found family aspect in this book. Sergio was a real friend to Mase. When he checked him on his shit when he was wrong, I was too happy. I haven't read many stories where the homeboys do that so it was a very welcome surprise. I also loved how Uri bullied her way into Soraya's life and became her best friend. Normally, that would annoy me, but it worked in this story. She was a real friend to Raya. The definition of ride or die.

I was sad when Mrs. Eunice, Mase's grandma died. We knew it was coming, but it was still sad seeing him lose the last remaining member in his family. They loved each other so much, and she was the reason him and Soraya got together. It was heartbreaking seeing him torn up when she died, but I'm glad he had a good support system.

I'm glad Vince's bitchass got his ass whooped. His psychotic ass deserved it. Ree's delusional ass also deserved the whooping she got. This book was too good. I loved how it was low angst and minimal drama. My favorite kind of story. The only con I have is the constant grammatical error of the author using a 0 instead of an o for words. That issue popped up a lot in this book. She needs to either get an editor or hire a better one. Besides that, this was a sweet and beautiful black romance love story.

Zamaseon has my heart

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Soraya Gault is an Ocology Nurse who came to the United States to obtain an education that would help her care for her ailing father and move her family from the Sudan. Zamaseon Hendricks is about his business and has lost a lot in his lifetime. His mother from birth and about 5 years ago his grandfather. His Grandmother, Eunice, is the only one left and she is his heart. Ms. Eunice has a plan to help Soraya achieve her goal while also accomplishing the one thing she wants for her grandson. This marriage of convenience was unique and pulled at my heart strings. It’s always Family Over Everything and both of these characters were the epitome of that.

I absolutely loved Zamaseon. At first I didn’t know how the couple were gonna make things work because initially he was so against marriage as a whole. But the way Zamaseon fell into to the role of husband was so endearing to me. He didn’t play no games about Soraya and would not stand for anyone disrespecting her. Soraya’s friend and co worker Uriya was funny throughout. She was not here for Vince at all. She spoke her mind and was protective of Soraya.

The feels

I actually started this book on Audiobook via Libby but couldn't get passed the 3rd chapter. The narrators with the accents were not for me. So I jumped to the Ebook and enjoyed the book! I loved the relationship Mase had with his grandmother. I enjoyed to chemistry Mase and Soraya had even though it was kinda forced. Wish we could've had more on the bestfriends relationship. Also, loved learning about the Sudanese culture and unrest that they are facing.
Plot: 4.5
Character development: 4.5

Rounded up to a 5

Rah rah

I wanted to dance and cheer a few times in this story. Soraya was the nurse for Mase's grandmother. I kind of guessed that his grandmother would play a pivotal role in their outcome. Mase was in the streets heavy duty with his best friend Uri, living his best life. Soraya was working overtime to help her parents move from the violence in Sudan. The relationship between Soraya and Mase expanded as his grandmother's condition brimmed over the edges and spilled grief, love, and a new life into the tale. In the authors writing style, she uses a lot of slang and maybe this is how she speaks, but it distracts the story and my focus. Overall, I liked the story. 3.0 stars...

This was my first by T'Lyn and ehhh....

Zamaseon was too much the whole book - aggressive, disrespectful, and controlling. While I feel he was redeemable, he was just too rough around the edges. He had so many good qualities and principles, but he was determined to be a hood ninja. I can see when he was in the streets and dealt with people accordingly, but when he got with Soraya, I thought he would tone down. He was hella disrespectful, especially all that cursing around his granny when they raised him right, and I absolutely hated when he referred to Soraya as his "b!tch." She was not a hood chick and it just seemed out of pocket, ESPECIALLY when he referred to her that way but was ready to buss somebody head open for calling her a b!tch.

Soraya was a sweet, hardworking woman, who was your typical child of immigrants. Working hard to save her family, more concerned with them than her own wellbeing. I'm glad granny saw something in her and made the connection. I will say, because Zamaseon was helping her, she accepted a lot of his foolishness for the sake of her family being rescued.

Uri and Serge, hands down ride or die! They didn't play about their people! I love that Serge would check Zamaseon when he was wrong and try to get him to see the bigger picture and I loved how Uri went up for Soraya - anybody could get it!

I think Zamaseon could benefit from therapy. I don't think he truly dealt with the deaths in his family (mom, then grandparents) or the absence of his dad. He kept a lot in and you could tell he was a good guy somewhere in there, but needed some help bringing that guy to the surface.

I didn't really like this book because of him, but I'm going to try another T'Lyn or two and see how things go.

⭐️⭐️

I started off not liking the MMC, he was crass and immature. Over time, he began to grow on me, but I still didn’t love him.

Overall the story was okay. There were too many storylines that were introduced, but never added to anything. For example: the couple in the elevator knowing Larry- what did that mean? And Ree showing up with Larry. Sharee period, especially the incident at the restaurant.

When focusing on the couple, it was cute. Throwing in all the other extras, the story started to become jumbled.

There has been a nice pick up in the "forced marraige" or "marraige of convenience" trope in the black contemporary romance sphere lately, and i'm HERE FOR IT!

The Fine Print follows is more 'marraige of convenience' and it was a cute story. Mase and Soraya are from different sides of the tracks. Mase is rough around the edges, about his business - that business being not so legal - and even more so, all about making sure his grandmother is taken care of since she and his grandfather raised him into the man he was. Soraya is a nurse who is doing all she can to get the money necessary to bring her family to the states and to safety. Ms. Eunice, Mase's grandmother, sitting on a trust for Mase, sees an opportunity to help both Mase and Soraya and puts a plan into place to make it happen.

The chemistry between Mase and Soraya was palpable from the moment they meet and continues on throughout the book with them getting to know one another and actually starting to care for eachother outside of just the convenience of their arrangement. Mase calls on the memories of the man his grandfather was an how he treated his grandmother in their marragie, and uses that to shape the way he approaches being a husband to Soraya. Soraya, who has spent most of her life fighting for a better life for herself and then for her family, has never had the time to be in a relationship and so goes into the situation with Mase with her heart wide open, ready to receive and give all the love possible.

All in all it was a really good and enjoyable story with entertaining characters. The only critique I have, and the reason this isn't getting a full 5 star rating, is that towards the middle-to-end of the book, the goings on of the book started to feel contrived. The progression of feelings between Soraya and Mase started to feel rushed and not all that authentic. One of the major climaxes in the story wasn't really a climax at all, and in the end, I felt myself getting a bit bored with the story altogether.

This is the first book by T'Lyn I've read though, and it was a great first time showing so i'll definitely be checking out more.

The Fine Print by T’Lyn is about hood phamarcist/cannabis dispensary owner Zamaseon Hendricks and oncology nurse Soraya Gault. Mase was raised by his loving grandparents and when his grandfather passed away he left him a lump sum of money in the will with the condition that he doesn’t have access until if he’s married. Mase doesn’t care about the money nor does he care for marriage! Until he does. Soraya is an immigrant from Sudan, she’s a nurse that has a close bond with Mase’s grandmother. Her parents and younger brother are still in Sudan and Soraya wants nothing more than them in the States with her. I like the multicultural aspect of the story, here is Soraya from Sudan, a non-practising Muslim being paired with this American man that’s in the streets. They’re not supposed to work but somehow they do. I think these two are more similar than they appear, at their root they’ll do anything for family. As a reader I’m glad we got to see the difficulties that may arise from dating someone of another culture, Soraya’s parents were not feeling it initially and that’s real. I enjoyed the premise of the story, I’m always here for a marriage of convenience! I love that Mase and Soraya both catered to each other. I wish we could’ve spent more time with them as a couple with less time jumps. The friendship dynamics are amazing Uriya and Serg are real ones!! They held it down always! There was another storyline within this one that I feel could’ve been fleshed out better. I mean the situation is crazy!! The epilogue was a beautiful way to wrap the story! I think the only thing that was missing was the letter the grandmother wrote him, that would have been the 🍒 on top.

Love loveee

I’d give this book a solid 4.3–I’d give it a 5, but there were some key factors missing for my personal taste. Before I even get to that—know this was such a graceful love story. You get to experience patient, black love. As a romance lover, that’s what we as black women need to see. The plot doesn’t have to be one-dimensional; forcing the male & fem leads apart. It can be real life challenges that force the characters to actually communicate. Because that’s what black love really is. It’s powerful, resilient & worth fighting for. Because the story was so well thought out; the take-aways were worth it. There were a lot of grammatical errors for starters. Not too many to ruin the story, but enough to make me reread the sentence a few times. I’m obsessed with detail so it hurt a bit to not have the manuscript properly edited before giving it to us readers. Which makes my 2nd point—I’m a sucker for detail. There were moments missing. It felt like so much build up but only peaks into the moments. I wanted to experience the ENTIRE journey with both Mase & Soraya. T’Lyn painted them too well & got a lil stingy with them lol. My third point is just all the way personal—the name Zamaseon is….. A LOT Lmao. Overall ill put this in my years fav

The Fine Print

I am pretty sure that marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes. I love reading T’Lyn’s stories. They are exactly how she markets them, with a little hood and romance. Right now I am trying to make it through Crescent Falls.

Zamaseon is not ready to be in a relationship. As he states, no one loves coochie as much as him. However, his grandmother wants him to receive the money his grandfather left for him in his will and the only way to do that is to get married. That is also her only/last wish for him as well and she has the perfect person in mind.

Soraya is Mase’s grandmother’s oncology nurse and is currently facing financial battles. She needs to have money in order to sponsor her family and help them escaper from the war ridden Sudan. Mrs. Eunice proposes that she marries her grandson, Mase. After receiving a terrifying phone call from her family back in Sudan, Soraya pretty much begs Mase to marry her.

Soraya is exactly what Mase needs. Mase loved her from the moment he met her. He takes such good care of her. I loved this story, it was so sweet. At times, I had to close my eyes at some of the things Mase said and done. I love the way T’Lyn wrote Soraya. She didn’t have experience being in a relationship so she didn’t jump to conclusions and let Mase explain himself. T’Lyn is becoming one of my favorites!

I loved that Mase Had zero f**k n***a in his spirit. He made a decision and he stuck beside it 1000%! I loved the relationship he had with his grandmother and the passion he stood on when it came to the way his grandfather taught him to be a man. Even though he high key disrespected his granny in the beginning of the book.

Soraya character was simply beautiful, selfless and calming! Her spirit on page was genuine and a breath of fresh air. Her dedication to get her family to America was humbling and I loved it. however, i think the lack of research on the Muslim faith was really noticed here and it could come across as extremely disrespectful to a full community of folks.

I enjoyed the book overall but I do think several plots lacked context, his Daddy & Vince story was all over the place and why mention granny final letter if we never got a chance to see what it said and why she wanted the daddy to be at the will reading in the first place. Lots of character development needed here..

A Win Is A Win!!

Mase loves his grandma. Soraya is a oncology nurse sending money home to her family in Sudan. Ms. Eunice has a plan to get her grandson married to her favorite nurse. Mase was admit that he wasn't getting married. He would do anything to make his grandma happy. Soraya was simple she wasn't used to having anyone do something for her. Everybody needs a friend like Uri because when Ree got close to Soraya she punched her in the mouth. Vince is a creepy a** dude. He knew he told his people Soraya was his girlfriend, but Mase put a the breaks on that. Her mama loves Mase but her daddy had a problem with him. When his grandma died, he blamed Soraya he was just lost. Serg was like his brother that why his grandma put him in her will. They went legit. He married her again, so her family could be in attendance. They got their memories of Ms. Eunice. She got her family in the states. She got her best friend and her husband their child.

Beautiful ❤️

I really enjoyed this journey of love.
Mase and Soraya were both so deserving of a love like this. I loved how Mase who wasn’t with none of the marriage stuff just fell in line and in love with his wife.

Soraya was so sweet and innocent. I loved how she loved her family. I also loved the way Mase loved his granny but hated how foul his mouth was in her presence.

I especially loved that there was minimal drama. No break up to make up just a young couple learning and earning each other.
I did want Mase to put Ree in her place for that lol
stunt she pulled with Soraya. I also wish he had read his granny’s letter at the end.

Eww Vince was a real weirdo.
Everyone deserves a friend like Uri, that girl didn’t okay about her friend at all.

Overall a beautiful love story ❤️

OMG! this was just too good….

I waited to read this story so I could savor it since MS. T’Lyn is part of my favorite drop everything and always make room on my TBR for these top authors and yet I still find a way to finished reading it in less than a 8 hours window….🙃😒😒. It was that good.
Soraya and Zamaseon or Mase were so cute together. They had one common denominator which bought them their situation and also bliss, bless and happiness. These two were so cute and perfectly complimented each other. URI and Serg were the full description of what is your/a BFF. Vince got exactly what he deserved but I had wished for more.
I am so sad that this is done and that I read it so fast but it was THAT good 👍!!!!!!
Can’t wait for the next one
