In all the fairy tales the maiden falls in love with the prince...but she has to remember that this isn’t a fairy tale...

The bastard son of the hated king and father he hardly knows, Prince Milosh is considered an outcast. He never expects to feel anything but contempt for the peasant girl who unexpectedly shows up in his life, forcing him to answer questions he never wished to ask.
When two very different worlds are thrown together under less than desirable circumstances, both hold deep judgement towards the other. But will they learn to see beyond their stations and birth so that they may defeat the coming darkness, or will labels given to them at birth continue to define them?

*dies because I flipped a page and it was the end*

I NEED TO TALK ABOUT ALL THE STUFFS.

So. I'm feeling very conflicted right now over the quality of the writing. I found typos. :P I also felt that the pacing was off....often. The emotional scenes that needed more depth to make me feel for the characters were rushed and not given enough attention. I think that someone with an eye for detail and a feel for pacing should have gone over the book with Kara before she released it.

Had that happened I would be flipping out in fangirl mode and screaming for more of this. However, because the pacing and lack of detail in important scenes (typos don't bother me much, but they were there) I have been prevented from enjoying this book with my whole heart. 😦

BUT. (Wait guys there is a but). BUT. I did enjoy the relationship development VERY MUCH. I CAN AND WILL SCREAM OVER THAT.

See there's this thing in fiction that really gets me every time, even if I resist it (not that I was even trying to resist it this time). It's called a trope. An enemies to lovers trope. AND GUYS. *shoves book in people's faces while staring at them with big bug eyes* THIS ROMANCE DEVELOPMENT WAS PERFECTION.

Milosh (💖*his name* 💖) Okay. I freaked out when we were first introduced. No. I FLIPPED OUT. My inner fangirl couldn't help but love him. ALSO. HIS TATTOO. (*Is in hysterics*) I never freak out about tattoos. Never. BUT HIS TATTOO. *giggle screams* It just really added to his tough persona and when he finally came out of that (I freaked out about that too) I Just 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍!

*sighs* I'm not doing a very good job of reviewing this coherently (professionally), even with my sad points at the top.

WHO CARES ANYWAYS?

Serena? Uh. Yeah, she's cute. She's innocent. She's selfless. And SHE'S GOT A NEAT GIFT. (Okay yeah, it's fire. Whatever. It's fun to read about) I love how sacrifice, family, and love is so important to her. And how she sacrificed what she wanted for the good of all.... 😭😭😭😍😍😍💔 That was a good moment.

The side characters were great. HUNTER 😍 Also that ending sacrifice....sweet, but it didn't make me cry because of the reasons stated at the top. I feel this book just needs more help before it can be loved properly.

I loved the relationship (come on, I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers). But even that development could use some more details.

The accent was very well written though and the dialogue was fun. I couldn't help but laugh at Serena. She reminded me of Merida (from Brave)....somewhat.

The villain....ehh. I'm not scared. I wasn't scared. She just...was below meh. She needs lots of work. The motive behind what she was doing needed to be more subtle. *Is frustrated cuz I don't know how to convey my feelings on the weak points*

The world building could also use help. *sighs while rubbing forehead*

I had feels throughout the book .... mostly because MILOSH. *clears throat* But for the whole book to connect flawlessly.....it just needs work. :P

The message was beautiful and heartfelt. The message was endearing. I just feel it could have been more prominent had certain scenes been accurately detailed and evenly paced. ^.^

This review is a mess. But that happened. *rubs hand down face while sighing loudly* Maybe none of this made sense. Maybe now you want to read it. Maybe now you don't want to read it. MAYBE YOU'VE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THIS BOOK BEFORE.

Whatever way fits for you, I did my job. I poured my heart into this. And now you've made a decision based on this book and how it fits in your life.

Ugh. I'm making this way deeper than it needs to be.

I promise, I'm done now.

I want - no NEED - a squel. Please tell me that there is going to be a squel. That ending killed me and my heart. Oh my word, I wish hit hard in the feels.

It has been a while since I've read a fantasy novel and this book made me realize why I love them so much. The world building and plot always have me in by the first page.

This book was amazing. I read it in maybe two hours, if that. The plot and chracters had me from page one.

Speaking of characters can we please just talk about these amazing characters? I personally loved Milosh's character and his development. I am the kind of person who has a heart for broken and hurting people. I especially love seeing them overcome their demons in their lives.

Selena was another amazing character that I loved reading about. Her character was awesome. I did though want to slap her silly at the end but I understand why she did what she did.

As I mentioned above I need a squel. I need to see some things happen with these characters otherwise I am going to stike.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Honestly hate to love, prince and maiden, romances are my favorite so I was fangirling most of this book. XD

I highly recommend this book once it comes out. Read it! I demand it!!

I am not one for fantasy, but this book swept me off my feet!

The characters are heartfelt and beautifully real. The world was vivid and so well described it was almost tangible.

AND CAN I JUST MENTION ALL OF THE CONFLICT IN THIS BOOK?! I was constantly on the edge of my seat.

I only have two complaints:

1. The diction. Typical fantasy diction is not my favorite, I find it distracting and it slows down the pacing too much for me. I found that the way the characters spoke made it hard for me to get into this story, but I did get past it after awhile and enjoyed myself.

2. It was too short. I. NEED. MOREEEE.

All in all, Kara is a talented author, this is such a promising first book, I can't wait to read what she writes next!

Oh. My. Word.

This book...

It's so beautiful. Proper review to come when I collect my shattered heart.

10/2/19 Review

Wow.

I am left speechless by this book. This book...

When I started this book, I wasn't quite impressed right away. It took me a little while to get into it, only because I'm not much of a fantasy reader and there were a few typos that turned me off. (I'm sorry, I know, I'm so ridiculous about typos and grammar. Ugh, ignore me about that, typos happen, people, it's okay.)

Anyway, as I continued reading, I was left stunned and amazed at how the story was weaving itself into a beautiful bow.

I love Serena and Hunter and Elston and the prince's character arc is fire.

UGH, I LOVE THIS BOOK.

This book is an example of hidden gems within the Indie publishing world. There's a reason I'm so passionate about Indie Publishing and that's because we're looked down on and NO, This book proves why we Indie writers and authors are just as hardworking, if not more so, than traditional publishing. (No offense to anyone who wants to traditionally publish, I think that's great too, but don't forget we work hard as you do.)

And Kara did an amazing job with this book. You can tell from the weaving of words how much this book means to her. I love this book.

Five shiny stars.

*Ahem*
So why am I reviewing my own book?
Because...
Humans have asked about my book's content...
So I am bringing answers.
The Broken Prince is my first Indie published novel, the genre being YA (light) fantasy with a touch of romance, magic, and the power of human love. For those concerned about negative content there is a couple instances of profanity as well as the British use of "bloody."
The romance is down to a couple kisses and basically...I didn't want to focus on the physical side of the romance. To me, my romance didn't need that -- it focuses on the power of love and I wanted that to shine brightly.
Milosh is my book baby...I love him to pieces. He needs lots of hugs and I'm obsessed with his curly hair and no nonsense attitude.
Serena has kick-butt Gifting...I love that fire shoots out of her hands. She was so much fun to play around with.
Every book needs a silly side-kick...so cue Elston and his antics.
And of course Serena's little brother who wants to protect Serena with his life even though she can shoot fire and doesn't need him...but they love each other and family's are about being there for one another. Serena and Hunter stay true to that.
So there's The Broken Prince. I love it to pieces. I poured my heart and soul into this book -- it's perfectly imperfect in my opinion. I could have edited it over and over and never been satisfied. <3 <3 <3

The Broken Prince

What I liked:
- I liked how it was set in a small village and there was a castle and all those sort of fascinating medieval things. Later on, there was a lot of time spent outside, and that was good too.
- The characters were my favourite. The three main ones: I felt like we were friends. I felt for them and what they were going through, and wished I could step into the story and tell them it would be alright. And the way they opened up and grew and their stories came out throughout the length of the book - it was so good.
- I never worry too much about the plot if the characters are captivating, but this also kept me wanting to know what would happen next, and how it would all be resolved, and would everyone make it safely, and what and why and who. Once I got started, I had to finish it in a couple of sittings.
- I liked the symbolism in the story. I don't typically read fantasy type fiction, so I was unsure how I'd find it, but I think all the different elements added to the story and overall themes and message. And it was easy to read and follow.
- The themes were my second favourite thing about 'The Broken Prince.' I really like the way second chances are emphasized, the characters are accepted in their pain and given room to grow, and that in vulnerability and community there is shown to be strength. Our past doesn't define us, and we can move forward to create a better world.
- On that note, the author's note at the end tied it together so well, and I really appreciated the personal touch.
- And, now knowing the story, the cover and title are perfect.

What I disliked:
- that it ended?! :O But I'm excited to hear there is going to be a sequel sometime!

Overall, 'The Broken Prince' was an enjoyable read with a needed message and the best characters, and I'm so glad to have read it!

Special thanks to my amazing friend Kara for giving me a free copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Now, guys... The Broken Prince is a GOOD book! Kara truly has a way with words and paints beautiful landscapes and writes raw, realistic emotions. Milosh is a magnificent character, if a little chaotic and confusing at times, and the sibling dynamic between Hunter and Selena was so sweet.

Overall, I really liked this story, though there were some things that I wasn't a big fan of. First, Selena. I just couldn't connect with her character and motivations. It could be personal preference or the way that she was written, but I just found it challenging to root for her at times. I loved her and Hunter, but felt their relationship should have been explored further; it has so much potential! Milosh is a phenomenal character as well, and one of my favorites. I adore him, chaotic though he was. What a precious, smol dark thing.

This book is also really, really short for a fantasy novel (novella?) which made it difficult to connect with the world and its characters. My absolute favorite was definitely Elston. What a realistic, hilarious character with so much potential. And that ending?! *wails* I for sure guessed the romance from the very start, which was a little disappointing. I actually didn't ship them either *hides and waits for the fangirls to attack* It was very insta-lovey, and made me think a little of Stockholm Syndrome, which I'm sure wasn't the author's intention. The fact that they wanted to get married by the end of the book was super surprising, given their past with each other. Also, that love triangle? Not a fan.

This book, for its length and some formatting/grammatical errors, is actually quite enjoyable. The characters are definitely fun and easy to root for. The writing really shines when it comes to the emotional scenes, and that's when I felt most connected to the story. But it felt a little too uncut in parts for me to enjoy it fully. I can't wait to dive into book two, though, and I'm excited to see more of Kara's work.

STORY

A light fantasy full of beloved characters! It was easy to read and dealt with important topics such as a fear, being true to ourselves, and loyalty. The story was solid and I enjoyed watching things unfold. If you want a beautiful story that deals with tough aspects in gentle way, try this one out.

THEMES

Themes of fear, being true to ourselves, loyalty... This little book tackles a great deal! If you want a delightful story of second chances... this is it. I enjoyed the themes of redemption immensely!

Side note, I really loved the "feelings do not control me" aspect. Really needed this reminder where I am in life right now. Feelings, fear, etc, cannot control us. Life is meant to be lived boldly, and this book is packed with that reminder.

Also, I'm a sucker for light vs. dark novels, so this one was super solid in that concept. I'm not a fan of "gray" fantasy novels.

CHARACTERS

Solid, fully-rounded characters are always a huge plus! I enjoyed Serena's journey, immediately liked Prince Milosh, and basically adopted Elston. Really great cast!

The only issues I had with the characters were...

CONTENT

Light violence (PG). Mild swearing. Mentions of loose women, rape, bastard son, etc. Mentions of drinking. I'd say a clean novel!

OVERALL

While I was a bit surprised at how fast things went, I really enjoyed it, and cannot wait for the next installment that comes out soon!

Oooooh my goodness!
I have to write this review in bullet points or it will only be a mess.
1. I WANT A SEQUEL!
2. WHY, WHY, WHY did that certain thing happen?(can't tell because spoilers!)
3. This book was out of my comfort zone as in I don't read fantasy much if at all, but surprisingly I quite enjoyed it!
4. I adored Kara's writing! It was perfect! Give me pretty nature descriptions, unique words and I am in love!
5. All the names were so good and unique, I mean: Milosh and Elston? So cool! And Sindaleer, Bron, Aedre etc? Even better!

Through it was a little bit violent/graphic for my taste, it was necessary for the story.

I can't wait to see what else Kara writes!

[I was provided an ARC (advanced reader copy) by the author in exchange for my honest review.]

{The Basics}
I LOVED being amazed when I find incredible debuts from new authors. This story is no exception! The characters were beautifully broken, flawed, amazing people. The story was easy to follow & engaging, and I so enjoyed the simple concept of the magic system!

Serena has the Gift of fire---she's able to summon flames from her fingertips! But such gifts are widely feared & wholly forbidden. So much so, that those caught or found & labeled 'Marked' (thanks to the tattooed x's on their wrists) are beaten & killed.

I loved Serena's sweet, gentle character. She wasn't your typical, fiesty firebender, despite her fiery Gift, but she is a constant friend & unwavering in standing for what she believes in. It made for a beautiful story!

{Violence}
Young boys are taken from their villages to be drafted as soldiers. A character sports bloody gashes. A Marked man is executed before the villagers---his wrists are slashed open by a knife so he bleeds to death.

A woman kills a young maidservant by merely touching her---by using her unique Gift.

Milosh is pretty brutal in how he trains the boys to be soldiers.

A group of Mountain Men (known for their barbaric brutality) take some characters captive. A young man stumbles, cracking his chin on the stony ground---he's bloodied up.

A battle ensues on a beach; a young man lays wounded on sand with eyes closed---we're unsure the extent of his injuries. Another is wounded in the arm, blood running down. A man stabs a baddie in the abdomen but is mortally wounded.

A village is overrun by soldiers & heads are displayed on stakes...

{Spiritual Content}
A woman chants a strange language & introduces herself as a sorceress---one of the Marked.

Those who are Gifted are marked by x's tattooed on their wrists. We don't know how or who gave them the tattoos---it seems they have then from birth. Another man has the tattoo of a coiled snake.

At a funeral, the characters take time to say fond farewells.

{Language // Alcohol & Drugs}
Several uses of "bloody," at least one or two uses of "son of a rat," an unfinished "what the h---", and at least one use of "son of a prig." Possibly an unfinished "d---"...? <---It's unclear and comes from a drunken sailor. Another soldier states at one point, "it's hell on earth---Hell." Another man "mutters curses."

Mountain Men get drunk & rowdy on ale. Pubs. Pipe smoke. Mention of seeing someone smoking some kind of weed.

{Romantic Content}
The maids call the prince "a right feast for the eyes."

It's said that the present king assaulted Milosh's mother & took the throne---Milosh is called the "bastard son of the king." At one point in rage, Milosh shouts, "I am a bastard! No one accepts me because you raped my mother!"

Mention of soldiers defiling women.

It's said that the city of Acwellen was the definition of immorality. A woman dances in the street with bare belly & ankles showing. Mention of sailors "kissing loose women."

Two young people kiss at least once. At another time, Milosh cups her face in his hands during an intimate conversation.

{Conclusion}
This was a great debut! I enjoyed the story, the characters, & the world---especially Serena!! And Milosh's character was a beautiful picture of shattered brokenness finding true purpose & love. *cue schoolgirl squeal*

Again, I loved this! Such an easy read! It kept me turning the pages to find out what was happening! If you love a good, engaging clean Fantasy---I highly recommend this one. :]

Did I intend to stay up til almost 3 in the morning reading this? No. Did I? Oh heck yeah.

I loved how nostalgic this was for me. This kind of book was my JAM between the ages of 11 and 14. And here was a brand new one perfect for a grown-up me, full of intrigue and swordplay and potential treason. My favorite things. xD
One of the big things I loved about this book is the portrayal of sibling love. Serena goes on this adventure for the main reason of keeping Hunter safe, even though he's perfectly capable of taking care of himself, thank you very much, and I loved it. They genuinely love each other so much and I love them for it. I'm also not going to spoil any names, but the friendship between the characters in general is just great.
Milosh's redemption arc! is so important to me! because I love bad-guys-who-aren't-so-bad and the "I don't want to care about you as much as I do" characters. They're my favorite. Particularly when they realize "oh no i'm head-over-heels in love with this ray of sunshine" it's the BEST dynamic.
And just, overall, the fight scenes were awesome. the soft scenes were awesome. it was just awesome.
My only complaint is that I wish we'd gotten to see Serena use her Gift in a bigger showing of it. It kind of felt under-used. And I didn't super love some of the way the dialogue was written. But when those are my only two complaints, I consider it a win. Oh and also I want a sequel. Now. Please.
I'd recommend it! Especially for fans of Tricia Mingerink's Blades of Acktar series. Milosh gave me a lot of Leith vibes, you know, if Leith were the son of a bloodthirsty king.

Four stars from me!

I'm always impressed when an author publishes a novel at a young age so when Kara reached out to me about reviewing this, I jumped at the chance.
I'm so thankful that I did because this book was such a gem. The plot was so unique and the characters were well-developed. Prince Milosh was definitely a morally grey character and I enjoyed learning about how he came to be who he was. I loved the sibling relationship between Serena and her brother Hunter. They meant the world to each other and it was so sweet.
I must have a sequel. Really, I need a sequel.
Also, can I have special powers?

This is the first book I have read written by Kara Lindaburg. I was impressed.

The Broken Prince is set in a fictional world. They are members of society who possess different gifts. This sets them apart and has lead to fear and persecution.

The story begins as Serena's brother, Hunter, is forced to go into the service of the King. At 15 he is considered old enough to be trained as a soldier and fight in a war. Serena is "gifted" with the ability to create fire. If discovered, she could be executed for it.

I found Serena to be a wonderful character creation. She is compassionate and has empathy. She tries to take care of those around her while hiding the markings that show that she is different. Her love for her brother is heartwarming. She is willing to stand up against Prince Milosh to protect her brother. Little did she know that protecting him would lead her right in the path of the Prince.

The story contains a little bit of romance, not much. It concentrates more on the intrigue surrounding the Prince and the journey to save her brother. I really liked how Prince Milosh is uncovered layer by layer. He is complex. There is a vulnerability that he keeps hidden.

The ending felt incomplete. I didn't get the closure that I wanted. There is another book after this one and I am hoping to find the ending to this story.

Broken characters are the ones I most love to meet. To watch them heal, grow, and transform into characters who are confident, passionate, and altogether wonderful. Prince Milosh is one such character and his story is so beautiful.

Serena is also a broken character in her own way, learning how to navigate the faded gray line between black and white. She was easy to relate to in her love and protectiveness of her younger brother, as well as in many of the decisions she made.

The story was exciting, however, it moved really fast. I would have loved for it to be about 100 pages longer to really flesh out the plot and explain more about the world. I felt like the description was also a bit lacking, because even though Serena and Prince Milosh traveled through the world over the course of a month, I didn’t really get the chance to admire the scenery or understand the layout of the land as much as I wanted to. So I would have really loved to see more depth to the story.

But overall, The Broken Prince is an exciting story with a powerful message of healing through brokenness. It’s a clean, “light in the darkness story” and those are some of my favorite fantasies. I give it 3 out of 5 stars and can’t wait to read the sequel!

Trigger warnings: Deep hurts that cause anxiety attacks in the characters, as well as sexual assaults that are spoken of by characters (not shown).

(FULL DISCLOSURE I actually finished reading this on January 2, not December 31, but DON'T JUDGE ME I just desperately didn't want it counted onto my 2020 reading challenge because I started it in 2019 *cries*)

So, I didn't know what to expect from this indie book. I really don't think I've ever read an indie before, so I kind of had this (unfair) vision of low-quality writing and maybe even story. And while I had no reason to expect that from the author, my blogger friend Kara, I was prepared for it.

Well. Well, well, well.

People, the writing in this book was just SO GOOD. Above and beyond what I would have expected from an indie, and yes that's a totally unfair expectation because an author's talent has nothing to do with their decision regarding independent/traditional publishing-- but like I said, I'd never read an indie before.

The characters were all fantastic. I cared about all of them. A lot. Serena and Hunter are the most precious siblings, and Milosh just needs a big ol' hug, and ELSTON. Elston was my favorite.

The only negative-ish thing I have to say is that I sort of felt like the ending was a bit rushed. But it's a short book, plus I've only read it once and I always get a better grip on my opinions about such things the second time around. So I'm not solid on that opinion, but it's just an observation. (And yes, I will definitely be rereading this.)

Overall, this was a great book and I can't wait for the sequel. ;)

This book was so good! Serena and Milosh were great protagonists. Full of strengths and weaknesses, both had well done character arcs. The world was pretty well fleshed out, and while I wouldn't necessarily want to live there, my time there while reading the book was pleasant and full of reality.
I can't wait for the next one! Good work Kara!

4.5* I love this book! I can’t wait to read The Crownless King next! The Broken Prince is an adventurous story with some romance. Linaburg does a great job with making the Prince’s character. Milosh really is a broken Prince. You follow the story through the eyes of Serena, Milosh, and occasionally Enid (the main evil character). I loved watching through Milosh’s eyes especially because I could then watch him grow as a character. The Broken Prince is a book I would recommend. It reminded me a lot of The Fairest Beauty by Melanie Dickerson. I hope every Christian Fantasy lover will have a chance to read The Broken Prince and dive into the world of Sindaleer.

"The past doesn't lie."

Wow. I don't even know if I have words! This was so good!! Loved the morally grey characters fighting for which side they should choose (also if ANYONE touches Milosh I will kill them). The characters were all beautiful and broken and I love them! My only complaint is that the uses of the words "ye" and "mayhap" threw off my reading for at least half the book before I started to get used to it. That's kinda a me problem tho 😂 other than that it was super clean and amazing!!

**

OVERVIEW
"In all the fairy tales the maiden falls in love with the prince...but she has to remember that this isn’t a fairy tale.

Born into a kingdom where those of magical Gifts are rejected, feared, and even killed, Serena has spent her life striving to hide her ability and keep her younger brother safe.

The bastard son of the hated king and father he hardly knows, Prince Milosh is considered an outcast. He never expects to feel anything but contempt for the peasant girl who unexpectedly shows up in his life, forcing him to answer questions he never wished to ask.

When two very different worlds are thrown together under less than desirable circumstances, both hold deep judgment towards the other. But will they learn to see beyond their stations and birth so that they may defeat the coming darkness, or will labels given to them at birth continue to define them?"

POSITIVE ELEMENTS
Positive messages of picking a the good side. Characters are all beautifully broken and are fighting for good. Good messages of people being more than their labels.

SPIRITUAL ELEMENTS
Some people have something called the Gift. An evil sorceress

VIOLENCE
Sword fights. Threats. Pain and injury described. Death. Milosh struggles with judgement of others. Mentions of the terrible things the king has done. Milosh has nightmares that can get pretty sketch.

SEXUAL CONTENT
Honestly could have used a little more of this *shrugs*. Some tension. Touching (not inappropriate). A few kisses. Some flirting. Mention of how Milosh's father rapped women (including his mother).

LANGUAGE
"Bastard" used in the literal sense. Things described as "hell".

DRUGS/ALCOHOL
Mentions of drunks and alcohol.

OTHER NOTES
People put lots of labels on others. Overall amazing!! Highly recommend for ages 12+ for some violence and complex themes.

~Happy Reading~

~well-paced plot that made me end up reading this book in like a week? You bet!
~medievalish setting that just feels soo real? Oh, yeah, this has got it!
~THE MOST AMAZING CHARACTERS EVER?! You better believe it!

In one word this story was FANTABULOUS! It had me clinging on for more and enjoying EVERY MOMENT of the ride! I looooved how this story focused on how broken the world is but also showing the hope and love that just changes everything. Linaburg handled all of this in a beautiful, breath-taking way that I think was what really had me falling for the story. My most favorite part was Prince Milosh because I connected sooo well with him. I don't remember exactly what had happened but there was this one part in the story where Milosh was angry about something, but how he reacted in his anger had stopped me, because I realized that was EXACTLY what I would do in that situation. Something about that just blew me away! I can definitely say my list of favorite books just got a new novel added to it! With heart, a dash of romance, and unforgettable characters, The Broken Prince is a story sure to touch your heart!

I got a free copy in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are my own.

I had been in a bit of a reading slump before I read this. It was rare if I had actually liked one of the books that I had read in the last six months. This book is a gleaming ray of light! I read it really quickly and couldn't put it down. Kara's messages are deep and real and I think that everyone should hear them!

Okay. So many feelings right now as I write this review.

First off, I am not the biggest fan when it comes to full on fantasy. Let's just say I am more of a contemporary and dysphoria girl, and a pinch of sci-fi or fantasy.

But, oh my word, this book was SO GOOD I hardly realized it wasn't my first pick genre!
The characters, description, story, theme . . . I loved it all. I admit, it took me a little while to get into it (which is not the writer's fault, AT ALL! After not reading a whole book all the way through for sometime, I have developed into the world's slowest reader EVER.) But once I got into it, I pretty much kissed going to bed early goodbye. 😂

Kara's story bled with orginality and passion. Her characters are so lovable and relatable, and I absolutely loved the relationship between Milosh and Serena! It was such a unique approach, and very refreshing (and just—I loved them SO much!)
And Elston is such a memorable character! His personality was just so sweet!

It was almost scary how the themes could very much apply to what's happening today. I loved the way Kara dealt with the subjects of fear and courage and anxiety. They are very real things, and I think everyone has struggled with them one time or another, if not all the time!

Thank you SO much, Kara, for opening your heart and pouring it out into your colorful descriptions and hurting characters that represent so many of us! I can know say that I've become a very big fan of your writing! You are so incredibly talented (And yes. I cried.)

*DISCLAIMER: The author of this book gave me an early copy, in exchange for my honest review.*
This book was very good! You can see Kara's heart in her writing and it was very neat. This is a Christian, medieval, fantasy romance. It was not preachy, which was wonderful. I enjoyed the story and the characters a lot, but I have a couple suggestions that would have made them better. The individual characters were well done, but I felt the relationship developed without enough reason why. I like the hate to love trope in medieval settings, but I wanted more reason as to why the two characters started falling in love. I felt like there were a couple "moments," and then it just happened. I wanted more. As for the plot, it was good, but it felt too short. I wanted more, in a good way. I am excited for the sequel because we are left with some unanswered questions. I am expecting great things from the next novel! I give this book a 4.5/5 stars for cleanness (the word bastard was said a few times and h*ll was also said a couple times); 4.5/5 stars for characters; 4/5 stars for plot; and a personal rating of 5/5 stars.

First off, The Broken Prince was AMAZING.
I read it in nearly two days and it was impossible to put down. The writing style was clear, and set in a fictional world still ground enough into our own reality to really feel as though it was real.
I love morally grey characters, and Milosh took it to a whole new level.
Truly going back and forth with what he believes to be is right, and even by the end of the book still struggles. His character is raw and gripping, and definitely by the reason you should pick up this book.
Serena was the kind of female character I love reading. In an age where masculine, "strong" female characters roam YA, Serena was like a breath of fresh air. She's afraid and scared, but she's courageous and is not easily pushed around. Open minded, but allows herself to feel.
I would definitely recommend!

This was such a fun book! I've "known" Kara online for several years, and I'm super excited for her to be sharing her book with the world!

To start off, there were some technical difficulties with my copy of the book: I caught several typos, and I think there were some line breaks that should've existed but didn't? I'm fairly certain these have been fixed now, but they were a little bit distracting and confusing.

Other than that, however, I really enjoyed the story! The main character, Serena, was such a good main character! She was feisty and smart, careful and thoughtful, and truly wanted to stand up for what was right. Milosh was also a really good character! I really liked seeing his character development as the story progressed.

The story also focused on some side characters: Hunter, Elston, and Enid. The storyline/perspective switched between them and it was fun seeing different points of view. In particular, I wished we had more instances of Hunter telling the story!

My favorite part of the book was the storyline! It was set in a "realistic" (if that's the word) fantasy world, by which I mean there was magic, but it also felt appropriately medieval and . . . old? It felt authentic and was a lot of fun to read. The storyline is also really fun! I wanted to know what happened next. There were some parts of the world building that weren't developed very well, so I was a little confused at the beginning, but after that I figured it out.

Also, there were some scenes where I felt as if there were some missing details. I had to reread some scenes a couple of times to piece together what was going on, and I think there was some exposition/development of the story that might've been cut from previous drafts? I'm not sure but it did happen a couple of times. I could always figure out what happened though, so it wasn't too terrible.

Overall, this was a really fun read! It exceeded my expectations, and other than a few typos, proofreading errors, and missing details, it was a really well done story, especially for an indie book! The storyline and the characters were really well written, and I'm looking forwards to future books Kara writes! (And maybe a sequel?? 👀)

My Rating-
7/10

I got this book in exchange for an honest review and help with the relaunch so thank you Kara.

I have come to the point in my media consumption where most things are predictable. Things like plot twists and character deaths don’t surprise me anymore, and to be honest, I don’t find it to be a bad thing. Predictability is comforting which made this book comforting. I knew how the inner struggles were going to be resolved and that the conflict wouldn’t end the main characters’ morality. This book was enjoyable with an interesting plot and well rounded characters. The whole main cast was wonderful and well developed. I really felt that it could’ve been longer. Mostly because I wanted more development between characters and the events. The themes were really well done. The internal thoughts and feelings highlighted the amazing character development. I can’t wait to start the next book.

It was okay, not spectacular... but something about Milosh is really rubbing me wrong. The plot is interesting and I did like Serena, but the writing isn't quite perfect. I'll look for future releases by this author but won't be reading the sequel.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Kara’s debut novel is captivating and powerful. Though her characters and storyline might seem stereotypical – a headstrong female protagonist thrown in an unlikely adventure with a troubled, brooding male – she fleshes out her characters, their fears, and their flaws.

In her medieval fantasy novel, Kara flawlessly weaves together action and dialogue, keeping up the pace of the story for exciting scenes, but not neglecting character-building moments.

Antagonists have believable motives, more fleshed out than the typical good versus evil narrative.

The storyline is driven to an exciting climax – I stayed up until 3 am to finish reading The Broken Prince, which is something I have not done in years!

I also appreciated Kara’s world building – the reader is given a glimpse into Serena’s world and lifestyle, giving us just enough knowledge to picture her world without slowing down the narrative.

Though Kara’s story is serious in tone, there are enough light-hearted moments to balance out the heaviness of subjects such as depression, mental health issues, fear, and anger.

Ultimately, though The Broken Prince is a story about brokenness, it is also a story about redemption and hope. This is the kind of story we need today, when there is so much darkness and brokenness. The story of Serena and Milosh is a story that many of us need to hear – a reminder that although there is darkness, there is also light.

I would highly recommend this novel to any lover of fantasy, action/adventure, romance, or stories about mental health. The Broken Prince is a powerful debut from a promising up-and-coming author. I will look forward to reading Kara’s future works!

TLDR: "The Broken Prince" is a powerful debut with believable characters, a fast-paced storyline, and enough hope to balance out the darkness.

Rating: 4.5 stars

Disclaimer: I’m friends with the author, but that in no way affected my opinion of the book- I promise!😀

I’m FINALLY getting around to reviewing this beautiful book!

This was such a good book! I really enjoyed the story, and I found myself finishing the book within a few days because I was intrigued with what would happen next! That’s pretty big because I can sometimes forever to finish a book even if it’s really good.

The characters were awesome. Serena and Milosh are such interesting characters and I can’t wait to read more about them in the second book!

The only reason this is a 4.5 rating instead of a full 5 is because I felt the settings could’ve been slightly more fleshed out. I felt like it could’ve used a few more descriptions of each setting so I could have a stronger image of the places in the book.

Otherwise a FANTASTIC read, and I’m so so proud of Kara for publishing her book baby!

The Broken Prince
The Broken Prince #1
By Kara Linaburg

Prince Milosh is bidding his time - not taking sides in the conflict between his father and the people he has subjugated to his rule. Ripped from the only home he has ever known by a father he didn't know he had, Milosh finds himself both needed and hated by King Thayer. Forced by the king to carry out his decrees or face more time being punished, Milosh finds himself falling into the darkness that is all too ready to consume him. But when he finds himself being questioned by a young peasant girl, he finds himself facing the very questions he has avoided.

Serena is one of the Gifted, which is a life sentence under King Thayer's rule. Marked, she must conceal who and what she is or face execution. But where Serena feels empathy towards Milosh, something she never expected, the other Marked feel only hatred.

When her brother Hunter sets out to save the young boys that Milosh is ordered to bring in to be trained as soldiers, he has signed his own death warrant. Determined to keep Hunter safe, Serena sets out to warn him but finds herself taken prisoner by Milosh. But Serena carries a secret, a secret that she has been ordered to bring about the death of Milosh. But Serena can she bring about the death of another? Even if it means keeping her brother safe, Serena is left with a weight upon her heart. Can she convince Milosh that the path he is on isn't the only choice before him?

In a land ruled by cruelty and fear can one young woman change the heart of a broken despairing prince? Or has the damage to his soul gone too deep to pull him from the darkness that pulls him deeper with every passing breath?

The Broken Prince is the first book in Kara Linaburg's Broken Prince series and absolutely must be read before reading book two The Crownless King. This is an excellent book and highly recommended to fans of YA fantasy and fairy tale retelling styled books. The various characters are well balanced and intriguing to get to know.

In this land ruled by hatred and fear hope is a thing to grasp and hold onto tightly. For as long as hope lives the darkness is held at bay.
