Polar Vortex

Sometimes truth and conspiracy are the same side of the same coin.

When former CIA operative and investigative journalist James Flynn gets asked to take a look into a secret government facility in Alaska, he begins his initial inquiry by meeting with a secret group of conspiracy theorists unironically known as Ultra. Along with some pressure from his editor and a wealthy benefactor, Flynn gets persuaded to travel to Alaska and investigate the wild claims and expose the clandestine program.

With the aid of Natalie Mercer, a local guide with her own hidden agenda, Flynn must navigate a treacherous landscape of deception and danger. From the frozen wilderness of Alaska to the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., he races against time to unravel the truth behind a secret program known as Project Titan and the shadowy figures pulling the strings.

As the body count rises and the stakes reach a boiling point, Flynn realizes that the key to unlocking the mystery may lie with an unlikely ally — the billionaire tech mogul Blaine Jacobs, whose sordid past is part fiction, part fact—and Flynn must determine which is which.

In a pulse-pounding thrill ride, Flynn must confront his own past and the blurred lines between friend and foe. With the fate of the nation hanging in the balance, he'll have to use every skill in his arsenal to survive and expose the truth... before it's too late.

If you're a fan of authors like Vince Flynn, David Baldacci or Lee Child you will enjoy this series from award-winning and bestselling author R.J. Patterson and J.D. Kane.

THE FIRST SIGNS that I might like writing -- and that I might be slightly competitive -- appeared when my year two (or first grade) teacher, Mrs. Holland, asked my class to write and illustrate our day. Mine read like this: “The Red team beat the Blue team, 1 to nil. And I won.” The next 47 entries covered my exploits on the soccer pitch while growing up in Ipswich, England.

In South Carolina as a teenager, my dad told me that I could get paid to watch sports provided I could write about it. Sounded easy enough and by the time I was 16, I landed a job at my town’s daily newspaper and had a column on Major League Baseball players from our area. I also covered my first riot there at a sporting event -- and it’s safe to say I was smitten with journalism.

After graduating from one of the best journalism schools in the country, I took a job as a sports editor in South Georgia and learned firsthand about the passion of high school sports in rural America. I thought I knew before, but I didn’t. This was another world.

I also had the opportunity to cover major sporting events like the Olympic Games, the World Series, the Super Bowl, and the Final Four. It was a thrill!

But nothing was as thrilling to me as uncovering the truth in investigative assignments. I once broke a story about a prominent southern football team’s NCAA violation -- and found out the violating coach had committed suicide only a few months earlier. The story won a national writing award and stoked my desire to write about these issues. It made me realize that the sports world was just another fantastic backdrop for drama.

After writing non-fiction books with athletes, for athletes, and ghost writing for many others, I decided to enter the world of fiction writing. It had been something I wanted to do but never found the time. So, I made the time--and had a blast in the process.

I’m not out to become the next Faulkner or Hemingway -- I’m just out to tell a good story. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them!

Who says all conspiracy theories are just theories?

Polar Vortex is the first James Flynn thriller I’ve read, and as a result I find I must go back and read the first four books in the series. I’m very familiar with R.J Patterson’s writing and when he offered me an Advance Reader Copy of Polar Vortex, I knew I was in for a rollercoaster ride of intense action. While I was ready to strap in for the twists and turns, I didn’t anticipate how difficult it would be to put the book down once the clock began striking the hour when the day was done. Since I’ve never read the first four books, I can honestly say this book is an excellent stand-alone story. It is also an excellent introduction to James Flynn, a character I intend on becoming much more acquainted with as this month progresses and I read the earlier books.

If you enjoy political thrillers or science-tech thrillers or a good old mystery, you can’t go wrong grabbing a copy and settling into a comfortable chair with a cold drink. I promise if you start early enough in the day you are going to be in that chair until the last page is read.
