Oh.MY.GOD... I loved this!! This is why I read so many mediocre books because one of them will end up being gold to me. This reminded me of one of my all time favorite books Never Seduce a Scot and I loved that book so hard. This book also brought me out of my historical funk that I have been in for a while, lol! I could just not get into them anymore for some reason.

Things I Loved:

-Alexander is a big and tough Laird but he's a total teddy bear inside. My absolute favorite type of hero.

-Hannah misunderstand's his quietness and penchant for letters as rudeness and aloofness in the beginning because she did not realize his speech problems but that quickly resolves and they are just so cute. I'm so thankful it didn't continue on till the end and we got to see them 100% into each other for the vast majority of the book.

- NO OW drama. Thank the lord!! In fact, the H never ever thought about any past women!! I want to thank the author for not shoving his past sexual experience down my throat. The h was obviously a virgin and I did not mind it at all since we don't have to hear about H's past.

Other than that...I don't know what else to say about this book.. I absolutely adored it. I highly recommend it to anyone interested!!!

3 stars. It started out really good but slowly peetered out. At about 70% I was ready for it to be over. Decent and multiple love scenes but maybe too many for they began to loose their potency.

As a whole it was a sweet and entertaining story which did not trigger any of my emotional pet peeves. I also found it light hearted and funny at times making me LOL.

I had a lot of problems with it though. ++Spoilers++

The hero has a speech impediment.. stuttering, and although he has it pretty much under control, he still has issues. I found the writer didn't give enough impact on this. I didn't see his speech affecting his life in a debilitating way. I also feel his "tortured past" was underplayed as well.. I really didn't feel the whole enormity of it. Perhaps it is because the book was very "wordy" and didn't "show" enough. I can't really pinpoint it.

There was little consistancy with the Scottish dialogue bits. Sometimes the characters would speak in ye's, nae's and doona's but then it would trail off and disappear.

I liked both the H & h but I felt problems there as well.

Hero: He is supposed to be a fierce warrior (as shown in the beginning) but yet very early on he becomes very beta.. not in a terribly bad way, but he was certainly pussy whipped after meeting Hannah. I think the author made him a little too ignorant at times as well. Also, I am not sure, but it seemed the hero was a virgin. There were many hints to it, but it was never really clear. No matter, I like betas better anyway as opposed to rakes.

Heroine: I didn't like that she was "plain" and plump. I am plain in real life, I don't want to feel plain when I read. BUT! although she considered her self plain in comparison to her two sisters, the hero thought she was beautiful so it made up for that. IMHO she was also far too agressive, controlling and stubborn. A quality I started to dislike about her as I got about 40% in. It was over the top.

Secondary character Lana was too perfect and it annoyed me.

The plot was ok, not really action packed, but it moved along at a steady pace. The antagonists were not really used to their fullest and conflict was meh at best being too easily resolved or forgotten.

I felt that instead of Lana helping Alexander through his past issues it should have been the h. It also should have been the h who helped resolve the ending with the Duke. As a matter of fact, Lana could have been omitted and Hannah should have had Lana's traits incorporated into her character. It would have made her more likable, more important, and it would have made more sense. Why Lana had to come with Hannah in the first place was a mystery to me.

Lastly the ending was a bit abrupt or more or less quickly resolved, and really fell flat at the end.

Irritating overused phrases: "It tasted like dust"...."His bowels clenched"

I don't plan on continuing the series. I will keep an eye on them and perhaps reconsider later on.

I loved this book! :)
It was such a lovely surprise!

I adored the hero, Alexander! He's stuttering and having enormous problems because of that. He's a laird and should be a strong, determined leader, but with he's having problems speaking, so it' very difficult for him!

Still he's such a dear, honorable man that you cannot avoid suffering for him when he's struggling with words. And it happens in the most unconvenient moments: when he's excited or when he's angry, or stressed about something.

Hannah was also a very interesting heroine. She's strong willed, but at the same time very compassionate and sweet in her own way.

I loved how their story progressed: slowly and sweetly.

Hannah at first doesn't know what to think about her brand new husband: he isn't talking to her! But he's passionate and very skilled in other departments! LOL

Alexandred has fallen in love with his brand new wife, but has enormous trouble telling her that - obviously! So he's showing her in other ways! *wink, wink*

A very enjoyable and very well written! Recommanded!

This is just what the avowed Scottish highlander historical reader would ask for: a steamy, emotional love story set in a well-researched Scottish historical setting. I enjoyed Alexander and Hannah's journey to love, and Alexander is scrumptious enough to substitute for a nice hot fudge sundae. I look forward to her sister's stories, particularly young and quirky Lana's.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0 stars.

I have to say I really liked the hero of this story. Alexander is a man of few words, but he is also smart, loyal, and passionate. He is outwardly scarred by years of childhood abuse and he has a stutter, so he would simply rather not talk if given the choice. You'd never know his struggles from looking at him: he is strapping and strong... and the first man our heroine has ever really been attracted to.

Hannah has had her fair share of marriage proposals, but she is sure they are for all the wrong reasons. She thinks herself a far cry from the beauty of her sisters and she knows that her independence and intellegence aren't exactly what men are looking for. Her dowry, on the other hand, makes a fine catch. It isn't until she lays eyes on Alexander that she is willing to even consider tying herself to a man. But when he doesn't respond to her innocent kiss, she fears he doesn't return her feelings.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Alexander is crazy about Hannah. He wants nothing more than to please her. And when she accepts his proposal, he does his very best to honor her as his bride. But she doesn't know why he won't talk to her. She doesn't understand why certain rooms are off limits. And he doesn't understand her need to be useful... to be his partner. It all comes down to a lack of communication, and the walls that must come down before that can begin to change.

Miscommunications --or a lack of communication-- as a source of conflict is generally frustrating for me. But considering Alexander's issues, I minded much less than I usually do. In fact, I quite liked the way Hannah goes out of her way to deal with it once she realized what was going on. I also really liked how deep down neither character really believed they were good enough for the other. Hannah thought no man would be attracted to her looks and Alexander was insecure about his stutter and his scars. It was never a pity party, but it gave them each real vulnerability. It made it all the more satisfied when they realized they were wrong.

For fans of history in their historicals, there is just enough here to please, but without overwhelming the story. Personally, I don't want a history lesson in my romance, but I think Sabrina York found just the right balance in her conflict involving Alexander and the push for clearances by his Duke. The secondary characters are interesting too. Specifically, Hannah's sister Lana who can see ghosts and the aforementioned Duke dealing with a family curse.

Overall, I enjoyed this one. There are kilts and just the right amount of brogue. The relationship development hits just the right angsty notes. The sexual tension is great. The love scenes are sexy. And the ending satisfies. Everything I want in a good Highland romance.

Damn what a waste of a perfectly beautiful cover and 6 euros.

Make that 3 beautiful covers wasted because I sure as hell am not reading the other two books in the series after this one.

Now if we have been book friends for a while, you must have noticed this: I am not generous with my stars. But what's equally true, is also that I rarely give 1 star ratings and almost never comment negatively on the writing quality or the caliber of the writer. When I do feel critique is warranted, I try to do it in an unoffensive manner and more often than not, I reserve judgement in such cases. After all I am just a reader. All I have to offer, is my personal opinion. And we have plenty of that everywhere.

But this book, in my opinion, is why the romance genre gets a bad rep.

Its major faults include:

1. A modern romance dressing up in breeches and silk gowns and a rather misleading title. Alexander may be a highlander but he was not his highlander ancestors roaming the highlands. He was a much tamed version of his forefathers.

2. Unbelievably shallow characters, that goes for both lead characters and the secondary characters.

3. Stupidity from page 5. Of course the plump heroine would find the imposing highlander sexy from afar. They had never seen each other up close or had any encounters and she couldn't wait to get her claws on him. Same goes hero, who started thinking how beautiful she was after a kiss. And don't get me started on the kiss.

4. The sex. I am usually all for being practical. They had married so chop chop let's get to the business. But how they spent the wedding night.......of course sex was great and of course she was all wet for him, had been since she saw him on the horse from afar.

I really had so much more to say but they're not nice things. I should stop before its too late.

On that note, I do think the cover is tastefully done. The covers for all 3 books in the series are beautiful. What a terrible terrible waste.

*Re-read for the billionth time.*

I haven't finished my ranty review for Highland Chieftain but needless to say, I hated it. I decided to re-read this as a hunky-highlander romance palette cleanser. I love Alexander (the hero) regardless of whether the plot is realistic or if he's even realistic. Of course he's not. It's a book dammit. I love him and you can't have him, he's mine.

Okay, fine. He's Hannah's. Whatever. Semantics.

Hotness Rating 3 out of 5

Hannah and the Highlander brings me so much hope for the Untamed Highlanders series by Sabrina York. This story was a bit different than your normal highlander read. Let's face it the typical highlander read brings us hot alpha kilt wearing Scots that ultimately rescue the damsel in distress. Alexander is definitely the big, burly, sexy Scot that we know and love in a highlander story, but Hannah changes the whole dynamic.

Alexander Lochlannach was such an endearing character. He has a secret that he keeps for so much of the book that at times paints him in a bad light. Once that is cleared up you can't help but love him. After all he is a really good guy at heart. He plainly loves Hannah and wants her to be happy even though he's really clueless on how to accomplish this most times. It's really fun to read his hit and miss attempts.

Hannah was such a strong character. This can sometimes be tricky. I often feel like the author works so hard to make the heroine strong that it takes away from her femininity. Not in this case. Hannah had a soft, protective, compassionate side that she wasn't afraid to show once she knew a little more about the reasons Alexander came across abrasive at times. She was not opposed to finding her equal match in love and life she just wanted it to be true and not a bid for her land ergo using her as the way to gain it.

As I find myself saying with so many of Sabrina York's stories this book is smartly written and offers such a detailed background and storyline I find myself a part of the book rather than just a reader. I applaud Ms. York for the historical era in which this book was based. This could not have been an easy period to write. There was so much unrest and upheaval for the country during this time.

I will definitely be reading more of this series and the sister's stories that each book will present.

I've been in a bit of a reading slump and was in desperate need of a book to bring me out of it. Luckily, Hannah and the Highlander did just that.

The first time Hannah sees Alexander she can't take her eyes off of him, and when he comes to her rescue when one of her suitors gets violent? She foolishly throws herself at him only to be rejected. To say she captured my attention from the get-go would be an understatement and I couldn't wait to see her get her man.

Of course Alexander endeared himself to me as soon as I was given a glimpse inside his head. The fact that he wants Hannah wholeheartedly and doesn't hesitate to visit her father and ask for her hand? Sigh! Too bad the poor man just doesn't know how to act around her once they're together.

It was a little frustrating to watch Alexander distance himself from Hannah in the beginning, but once we learned his reasons why, he endeared himself to me even more. Luckily, Hannah caught on rather quickly and managed to find ways to get to know him a little better. And once they started opening up to each other they were absolutely perfect for each other.

This was such a sweet historical romance with a little suspense thrown in... Add in some sexy times, a couple laugh out loud moments, and Hannah and the Highlander was exactly what I was looking for. While this was my first Sabrina York read, it most certainly won't be my last and I can't wait for the rest of this series to be released!

Very enjoyable historical romance. I love a good marriage of convenience story. My only problem was that hero was a flawless man a real saint and I like my heroes cruel not beta. Heroine was also too strong and feisty and I like my heroines soft and sweet. Still I couldn't help loving their chemistry and the angst drew me in. Epilogue was cute as well!

Hannah anf the Highlander by Sabrina York
Reviewed by Barb Batlan-Massabrook
5/5 stars would give a bazillion if allowed this books os one you do not want to miss worth every penny. I totally loved it! OMG it blew me away so brilliant!
A beautiful read probably one of the best Scottish historical romances I have read all year which I totally enjoyed Hannah and the Highlander by Sabrina York and am looking forward to more book from this wonderful and talented author. I would give a bazillion star if permitted. This book was refreshing, original and unique as in most book one might have self esteem and insecurities but In this book both have them which causes a lot of miscommunication. This just makes the story more interesting and juicy in my opinion, Hannah feels men only want to marry her for her lands and families and wealth and feels she is an ugly duckling compared to her two beautiful sisters. Plus the fact that Alexander hardly speaks to her where Alexander has had a rough life between his childhood abuse, scars and having a speech impediment where he is embarrassed of his stutter. Oh yes get the Kleenex out as this one will definitely be pulling your heartstrings and was emotional for me. If I get that emotionally involved in a story it only means I am reading a extremely rare and special read! This definitely was that and more.
Barrogill, Caithness County, Scotland,
May 1813
In Hannah and the Highland it is about the intelligent independent and mistrusting Hannah Dounreay feeling that men only want to use her and marry her for one reason only her families rich land and she is not having this at all. After all why else would they want her unattractive self! Hannah has her mind and well as her tender heart and refuses to marry anyone for anything less then love, but then she meet the handsome Highlander one Alexander Lochlannach Laird of Dunnet!
Alexander who saves her from a brutal attack and she feels in a sense doomed as she feels the attraction to this silent highlander almost immediately. Unknown to her he feels the same but she feels as inse of rejections when she kisses him not realizing it was anything but that!
Be still her beating heart yet Alexander Dournreay and and with no time to lose with Clan wars over lands and properties! Alexander. needs to marry the beautiful spitfire one Hannah Dounreay now and has no time for courting and love games! Yet how is he to convince this beautiful stubborn minx? Especially since he is one more of action then words due to his stutter and past abuse,. On top of that as if he didn't have enough problems he has a secret that could ruin them both if it is ever revealed. Alexander knows he has fallen love with Hannah, but how is he to convince her that they are meant to be in all the ways that count and all ways she has dreamed of but with her stubbornness, fragility, and determination and feelings of betrayal! How is he to convince her she is the only woman for him in this life and forever when he is so quiet! Both characters are honorable and protective of there families which was also very touching.
I did love the secondary characters of her sister Susana in this story and was thrilled to hear she will get her own story in the next book "Susana and The Scot" and I am assuming that the youngest Lana who can see ghosts will be the third but no that is my own suggestion as I haven't heard as of yet.
This book was so much fun to read I simply couldn't put it down, it totally had me captivated with so many twists and turns and ups and downs! Just the way I love to read and also felt all the emotions and trials this couple went through. I highly recommend this spectacular read which was superbly written that will steal your heart and own a bit of your soul too. One of those toe curling books that are alway hard to put down at least it was for me. It's is a a definitely fast paced page turner! This was a first Sabrina York novel for me, but definitely will not be the last as I look forward to "Susana and the Scot" which will be the second book in her Untamed Highlander Series. It is definitely going in my keeper file and I plan to reread again as "Hannah and The Highlander" was that amazing just totally a brilliant read in my opinion!

4.5 stars!

I’m so grateful that I read Susana and the Scot first because it set the bar really low, so I went into Hannah and the Highlander with zero expectations. To say that this book was a huge improvement over the last is an understatement. Where Susana lacked, Hannah made up for in spades. The heroine and hero were lovely and made for a swoon-worthy pair, the supporting cast (minus Andrew) was A+, the humor this time was spot on and the plot, while simple, hit all the right feels. Oh, and there were kilts because really, you cannot set your book in Scotland and not have your heroes wear kilts *side eyes Susana and the Scot*.

I think what I loved most about the book was that the main plot centered on Hannah and Alexander’s post-married life. They get married quite early on (chapter 6, in fact) and you just don’t find a lot of HRs that go into detail about what life is like for newlyweds, especially a couple brought together through less than romantic circumstances. Theirs was an arranged match. So the courtship this time took place AFTER the wedding. I liked this because it allowed Hannah and Alexander to really get to know each other, even with the many mishaps along the way. Their romance developed more naturally and believably unlike say, Andrew and Susana’s which was a hot mess from start to finish. Sure, they couldn’t keep their hands off each other but hell, I’m not gonna complain about that. To be honest, I’m still ooh-ing and ahh-ing over that wedding night chapter.

Hannah and Alexander were also total opposites; yet another catnip trope of mine. Hannah was a take charge, no nonsense type of alpha heroine which contrasted wonderfully with her bluestocking, plain Jane (in her mind at least) outward appearance. Alexander on the other hand was this big, imposing, gruff and tough Laird who never said much (there was a reason for this but I shan’t spoil) but instead let his tender actions speak for him. The little things he did, like the notes and braving his evil uncle’s library to gift Hannah books to read endeared Alexander to me immediately. It took stubborn hellion Hannah a bit longer to soften towards the gentle giant but when they finally put their differences aside and started to act like a team, my little shipper heart squeed with joy.

There was some icky stuff that I wish hadn’t been in there such as . These were annoyances but after Susana’s book, I could easily forgive the few blunders for all the other good stuff going on. And now I really, really, REALLY want to read Lana and Lachlan’s book.

This book made me happy. My ratings are super subjective - always based on how a book made me feel when I read it. Hannah and the Highlander just put me in a good mood and I can't think of a single thing about the story that I disliked.

Our setting is 19th Century Scotland when many barons were clearing their land for the grazing of sheep. This created strife and heartbreaking tragedy across the Highlands for many crofters and families who were burned out of their homes.

One of the Highland barons and our hero of the story, Laird Alexander Lochlannach, is dead set against clearing his land. Alexander is a fiercely loyal and caring laird. He also is a bit of a tortured hero with a very harsh upbringing. Alexander also has somewhat of a speech problem, which causes him to be overly self-conscious. I just loved Alexander. He was tall, dark, braw and bonny. He carried scars from his youth, but they only added to his appeal. He went through a horrible situation and came out stronger with a strong sense of loyalty, bravery, and served as protector to his people.

Our heroine, Lady Hannah Dounreay, believes herself to be the plain and unappealing choice among the Dounreay sisters. When compared with Susanna (a warrior princess) and Lana (an eccentric ethereal beauty), Hannah does not think that her stubborn intelligence measures up. I also liked Hannah, she was a no nonsense heroine. Hannah was the perfect match for Alexander - even if he doesn't realize all the reasons she was perfect right off the bat. Alexander was extremely sweet and caring when it came to Hannah, and she was tenacious in her desire to help him with his duties as laird.

To me, this was a "modern historical" in terms of some of the slang, speech and sexytimes. But I loved it - as I said before, it just put me in a happy mood. The growing relationship between Hannah and Alexander was sweet and steamy, and the Highland setting came to life as I was reading. I think there will be a story for each of the Dounreay sisters, and I look forward to that as all of their characters were very appealing.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 5 stars / 3 flames.

Now I want to go to a Highland Games.

She should carry a sgian dubh.

I wonder what is wrong with Alexander?

Gross, Isobel.

Susana seems obsessed with archery.

Aw, Alexander, oats are good for you.

Yeah, she's not controlling.

"Poop" should never, ever describe a color scheme.

Holy wedding night, Batman.

No fearful virgins here.

Fiona is adorable in her puppy love for Alexander.

Fergus has really bad timing.

Okay, she should definitely keep the poop-brown.

What do you get when you marry two control-freaks...

I hope Dermid is in the farthest corner of Hell, even if he is a ghost.

Hannah, you can't eat love.

Just when I was prepared to hate Lachlan, he steps up.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Summary
Hannah Dounrey, is only interested in helping with her family and their land and the upkeep. She wants to save herself for love and genuine affection in a marriage, and doesn't want to settle for any marriage of convenience. But when she spies a mysterious Highlander, who following the games saves her from being raped, she is intrigued by this brooding silent kilted warrior. Alexander Lochlannach, who is the Laird of Dunnet, has vey little time to pick a bride. Currently, the highlands and the clans are in battle with each other, for land. The land Hannah's family hold is precious and he needs it but he also has more than just land to want to marry this captivating beauty, who he can't stop thinking about. Hannah agrees to their marriage, but soon upon arriving on Dunnet land, she becomes uneasy because Alexander is hiding something from her. He sends her only letters, hardly ever speaking, and keeping to his study most of the time. But when Hannah learns the truth of Alexander, love blossoms between them.
The Hero
Alexander, is a fierce warrior and isn't afraid to show it, however he has more than one challenge that keeps him from being as social as he normally would have liked. Alexander is the oldest of the brothers, when their father died and they were put in his uncle's care, Alexander had to sacrifice himself to save his brother. Doing so, Alexander had to endure beatings of the worst sort and still suffers from the ghosts of the past. He struggles with talking and stuttering and is ashamed of it. Now I truly was endeared by Alexander. At first I wasn't sure about him, he had this mysterious aura that intrigues you in the first few chapters but as you progress through the story you only want to get to the heart and core of this hero who ties you up in knots. I truly couldn't get enough of Alexander, because he is a tortured hero who is quite compelling.
The Heroine
Hannah has never thought of herself like her sisters. She believes herself to be plain and ordinary and a bookworm. She is an educated woman that turns many men away. So when she finds a man she is intrigued by who seeks marriage, she says yes. She is intrigued by Alexander. Hannah isn't shy, however, on showing what she needs and wants. She can be vocal when she needs to be. At the beginning of the book, she tended to leap to conclusions, and I really enjoyed seeing how she reacts to Alexander's struggles. She definitely becomes a heroine you can love. I love her compassionate nature that is joined with being intellectual and independent. I did like how she had her own vulnerabilities.
Plot and Story Line
Hannah and the Highlander was a delightful surprise for me!! I honestly couldn't put this book down once I had started it up. The first chapter really pulls the reader in, and to be frank you don't see it coming until it happens and then you just want to see what happens between these two. They have some powerful chemistry, and their first kiss is definitely swoon worthy to make any reader melt. What I liked about the beginning set up of the story was seeing the mystery and intrigue you find in the characters and I just wanted more. As I settled into this story, I became even more intrigued with the setting that Sabrina York places in it. This is set in the 1800's in Scotland, so we see the severe consequences of the "clearances" and York did a brilliant job with the historical aspects of this event in Scottish history. I knew about the clearances through the history books and other HR authors however York has done the best job in making these horrid truths come to life!! But I did feel that she balanced it out very well with the love story that takes place at the same time. We also get some fun interaction with Hannah's sister Lana (who is awesome) and Alexander's brother and another side character that brings out some various reactions in this reader: Lachlan Sinclair. The actual romance that we see happen between Alexander and Hannah is quite well written and just melted whenever these two were around each other. I loved the growth of their relationship and the challenges they face together.
“It was a harsh reminder that one never knew the true depths of another soul. A caution against passing judgment over another.”

I did like the twist that once they were honest with each other, then they fought side by side to stay together and keep their way of life and the people under their care safe from others who would destroy everything they have fought for.
The Cover
I can't get enough of this cover...its one of my personal favorites!! The setting is so romantic, with the sunset in the background and I love the bright colors here and what a sexy pose.
Overall View
Hannah and the Highlander is a vividly portrayed romance that had me tied up in knots with bright emotion, accurately portrayal of historical events and a love story to captivate your heart!! AWE INSPIRING!

Hannah and the Highlander is the first in the new Untamed Highlander series by Sabrina York. Hannah Dounreay is on the marriage market and thanks to her father, she comes with a great deal of land. At first glance, you might think this book is going to be your typical girl on the shelf who misunderstands her suitors attention for her land rather than who she really is, yadda yadda yadda. And yes, it starts out that way. Because she pretty much is on the shelf at twenty-two, and she does have suitors that only want her land.

But it’s so much more. And it has to do with our Highlander, Alexander Lochlannach, Laird and Baron of Dunnet. Friend of her father’s and not one of her original suitors.

Alexander is big and male and strong and intimidating and a man of few words. Literally. After his initial encounter with Hannah, he is captivated. Only he lacks the words to tell her. And after they kiss, he truly is speechless. Which would be fine if Hannah weren’t waiting for the words of, at least lust, to be showered upon her. Instead, he leaves without another word to seek out her father for her hand. Leaving Hannah quite embarrassed. Did he think her a wonton? Was their kiss that terrible that he no longer wanted her? Was it all for the land?

You see, our Hannah is a romantic. And before she says yes, she desperately wants to feel that want and need, passion and love.

…but when it came to choosing a husband, a man’s lands were her last concern. If she was going to bind herself to a man, give herself to a man, she wanted something in the bargain. Love, passion, a tiny voice within her whispered, but she silenced it. Love was a fool’s dream. And passion? A hopeless hope.

But what Hannah doesn’t realize, is that Alexander is just as much enraptured with her and their kiss as she is. Only he lacks command over the spoken word.

And so begins our relationship with miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Without giving away any spoilers into his past, we are positive that Hannah would never feel that way towards Alexander. Because his story melts your heart after we learn what he has to overcome and why he is so mum with the spoken word. And when she finally understands her fault in assuming why he is reticent to use verbal communication, our hearts melt with hers.

She glanced up at the turret tower and caught him watching her again. All of her frustration, her aggravation and impatience, melted away. Something else entirely took its place, filling her chest with an ache that felt like adoration.

As Alexander’s skeletons are revealed and they begin to understand one another, like Hannah, I am completely taken with the laird. York does such a lovely job with his character development and how their relationship changes and blossoms. And as a bonus, we are introduced to the other two couples that will appear in the series. And already, I’m chomping to have the series complete so I can read about her sister’s HEA’s as well.

I LOVE Highlander romances. I don't know what it is about Highlanders, but I love them, and I can't resist them. When I saw a reviewer on Goodreads state that Hannah and the Highlander reminded her of Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks, which is one of my favorite books ever, I immediately had to get my hands on it. I can certainly understand the comparison to Never Seduce a Scot, but in a lot of ways, Hannah and the Highlander is different.

This is the first book in the Untamed Highlanders series, in which each book focused on a Dounreay sister. Here we follow Hannah, the oldest sister, and Laird of Dunnet, Alexander Lochlannach. There is a lot to love about Hannah. She's very independent, and she's not afraid to speak her mind. Hannah loves and adores her two younger sisters, her father, and her niece, and it was so great to see the family dynamic there. I could also relate to Hannah's feelings of not being as beautiful as her sisters with her average build and her brown hair and eyes.

But, as much as there is to like about Hannah, sometimes she drove me crazy. For about 40% of the book, I really wanted to smack Hannah. She was judging Alexander so quickly and she wasn't at all understanding that maybe he's just different from her. But, at around 40%, she stopped being so damn annoying and I did end up liking her.

Alexander, however, I absolutely loved. He's reliable, and responsible, and honorable. Alexander is kind and caring . . . and he's quiet, and doesn't speak much (we learn why very quickly). And because I adored Alexander so much, I struggled when Hannah was being an idiot for more than a third of the book. But then, I so felt the romance between these two. I was so on board their ship, my friends!

Sometimes I felt like Hannah and the Highlander couldn't decide if it was going to be a light-hearted story or a more somber story. There were times when Hannah would be in trouble, but then she would get out of the scrape, and just be okay. She never had any fears afterwards, and I found that so hard to believe.

I did really love learning about the Highland Clearances (a horrible thing!) in this book. It wasn't something I was familiar with, and learning about it in this book was fascinating. I think Sabrina York did a great job of incorporating that piece of history into her novel.

I should also mention that the Scottish accents are very heavy in this book. There are lots of "Ochs" and "Ayes" and it got old very quickly. I didn't mind the "Ayes" but the "Ochs" were in nearly every conversation and it drove me nuts. It was very distracting.

Hannah and the Highlander was a fun historical romance, perfect for fans of Maya Rodale, or fans of books that are very lighthearted with strong (but sometimes frustrating heroines) and sweet heroes. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook

Sabrina York is a new-to-me author and having finished Hannah and the Highlander I can honestly say that I will be back for more from York. Hannah and the Highlander was an adorably sweet read featuring a horribly smitten manly-man who didn’t think he was quite the catch that his heroine deserved. Who doesn’t love a smitten hero?

Hannah is the eldest of three sisters and she’s almost considered on-the-shelf. Her father is urging her to accept one of her suitors, only Hannah is looking for a husband that values her for more than the significant dowry that she possesses. When Alexander Lochlannach, Laird of Dunnet, rescues Hannah from an attack he’s a goner, and he can only hope that Hannah accepts his suit after turning away all others before him. While Hannah doesn’t quite believe that this hot guy wants to marry her she is spurred into accepting. It’s after marrying that Alexander and Hannah really have to figure out what to do with each other - miscommunication ensues!

Highlander romances are not generally my thing (give me a ballroom any day) but nostalgia gripped me as I’m quite certain my first romance read as a teenager was a highlander romance by Julie Garwood. York succeeds in giving readers a more modern romance without forgoing historical sensibilities. Yeah, Hannah and Alexander marry after barely speaking, but what happens after is what really shines. The respect and equal partnership that is emphasized and it’s that element that makes this a more modern and more enjoyable romance (old-school is not my thing when it comes to the romance genre).

The big conflict in Hannah and the Highlander is the lack of communication in Hannah and Alexander’s relationship, a fact that is not helped by the hero’s self-conscious awareness of his stutter. Fearing the loss of his bride’s respect, the hero is more likely to bark commands and write letters rather than speak. The fact that communication is what drives this romance makes this a romance that is mainly focused on its characters. While there is a sub-plot with the land Clearances that the Scots are being compelled to enforce, the relationship between Alexander and Hannah is what propels this book forward. The author does a really, really good job at developing and exploring how their relationship grows. Alexander and Hannah go from virtual strangers to equal partners, and it’s this kind of character/relationship development that always keeps me coming back to the romance genre. For me, it’s all about the characters, and Hannah and the Highlander doesn’t disappoint.

Hannah and the Highlander will appeal to those who enjoy a good Highlander romance as well as those who appreciate a strong character-driven plot. There are manly men and strong women. There’s also humour, tenderness and historical fact. Kind of sounds like a no brainer, right?

Hannah and the Highlander by Sabrina York was an easy Scottish historical romance for this NetGalley reviewer to like. With its ruggedly handsome, warrior-like, but surprisingly endearing, loyal, protective alpha hero and strong, beautiful, feisty heroine, the story unfolds at a steady pace with enough backdrop of drama to stay engaging but leaves plenty of time/focus on the main couple’s relationship. Though the love scenes were very steamy, they definitely did not highjack the main storyline.

Hannah, as the oldest sibling, must choose a husband. Though she wants to marry for love and be treated as an equal, she also needs a man who will protect her family, its lands, and legacy from the brewing chaos sweeping the highlands. Fortunately for her, as well as us, Alexander enters the picture and plays that role verra, verra well. I simply loved how anxious he was waiting to hear if his offer of marriage had been accepted. The description of his relief when the acceptance letter arrived was heart-melting romantic. Ms. York certainly did a good job showing their relationship blossom into true love.

The well-developed, believable cast of secondary characters make it not surprising that Books 2 & 3 will feature the heroine’s two sisters’ HEA and even Andrew’s, the hero’s brother. Lana’s angelic beauty and gift of interacting with ghosts was an entertaining, interesting paranormal touch, and this reviewer sincerely hopes will be factored in Book 3.

Though the ending was somewhat predictable, I still give this Scottish couple’s romantic tale a high recommendation. After all, my fellow romance book-loving friends, romance is the verra reason we read this genre. I definitely am looking forward to more of this series, especially Book 3.

(Nov) 3.5* In the Highlands of Scotland, Hannah, the eldest of 3 daughters, comes with quite a dowry - whoever marries her will control a large amount of land. She meets a hot guy, is almost raped, goes home, discovers she needs to wed now to help protect her family, and in a very short time, finds herself married to Alexander a Baron. Alex doesn't talk much - he has a bad stutter that makes talking hard for him. He is, however, drawn to his new (almost stranger) wife. He finds her quite beautiful - loves her brown eyes, so he decides he must decorate her room in brown, to match. Hannah is quite appalled at her shit-brown room, but does not know how to tell her new husband. If only these two knew how to talk, to say all they think, they would have had a golden marriage from the start. However, Alex is afraid his inability to talk, his weakness as a child while living with an abusive uncle, and other odds and ends will cause Hannah to leave. Hannah, on the other hand, is unable to share what she is thinking - not sure why, exactly - yet she expects Alex to be a mind reader (then again, he expects the same). She is bored being a Baroness, and wants to do more, but Alex does not understand that. It really takes them a while to understand one another. Their sex life is explosive from the first kiss, and as time passes, they learn to communicate, both through notes and finally talking.

There are problems going on around them due to the ending of the Highlander way of life and demands from Alex's Overlord, to whom he's sworn fealty. Plus there is a bit of action, a bit of ghosts (not usually a fan of ghosts, but here they were ok!), and while we have no idea what is going on with Hannah's other sister back home or Alex's brother Andrew (read the description for the second book in the series and there you go - they have a story!), I did like the youngest sister Lana and I think I will check out her story.

This is my first book by Sabrina York...and I hate that because I fell in love with her writing.! I so loved this book!! I would give it 100 stars if I could!! I am now searching for more of her books!! This is book one in the series "Untamed Highlanders". I am not even sure how to begin with this book as I loved it so much! I liked the secondary characters too...can't wait for their stories!! It really took me on a emotional roller coaster ride. There were a few sad parts, a few funny parts, some misunderstanding and definitely some hot love scenes!! Our heroine is Hannah Dounreay who overseas the family lands, house and tries to keep a watch on her sisters. Her mother died in childbirth so to me she kind of took on the part of being everything to everyone. Hannah has a very good dowry, which is making some of her suitors just want her for that. Hannah doesn't feel a beautiful as her other two sisters and really wants to find a man that loves her for only her. Our hero, Alexander Lochlannach, Laird of Dunnet has had a really hard childhood and life. Alexander is friends with Hannah's father and her father had wanted him to marry one of his daughters, but Alexander has been putting marriage off due to problems from his childhood. Alexander too is not feeling up to being worthy of someone. Once he meets Hannah, he is so taken with her that he must have her and decides to try and work around his issues. Hannah is a first taken with Alexander but he turns cold and standoffish at their first meeting. So she is set in her mind to avoid him..but fate has other plans. This starts our wonderful story of their love. I am so glad to have read this book and found this new author. I am quickly adding her to my favorite author list... I hope that you too will enjoy them!

WOW. I am so glad I stumbled across this book.

First of all I'm giving this 5 stars alone because of the H Alexander. He is honestly one of the sweetest hero's I've ever read. His love, adoration, and devotion towards Hannah was the sweetest thing. His shyness, and vulnerability made you just want to give the big guy a hug.

"This feeling of partnership... and the scorching possesivness that seemed to come along with it, fist in glove. Hannah was his. His wife, his love, his."

"She called him my love. It was the sweetest moment he'd ever known."

I do not know how many times I yelled awwww out-loud while reading this.

Now Hannah irked me a bit, because she is extremely impatient and it takes a while to understand Alexanders issues. But when she finally understands and stops being so cold towards him its all good! The sex between the two is HOT.

Next is Susana's story which I'm not looking forward to too much, but I'm super stoked for Lana!

Yes, if we’re going to have a highlander we especially like them bold and brawny and this book delivers him AND his brother. Alexander is the strong silent type, literally, it is one characteristic that has Hannah baffled. He does not talk except in short sentences or single words. But the chemistry between them is electric and so she is willing to wait out the chance for conversation. Alexander is so overwhelmed with love at first sight that every time they are together he can hardly speak. Lana, Hannah’s sister, has a sixth sense and she communicates with the dead. Since they are in an ancient castle there are enough ghosts to keep her occupied and to give her hints on how to go about helping Hannah adjust to the problems that crop up.

I enjoyed this marriage of convenience that becomes true love. It is also about the adjustment of two people in a marriage. The side characters are well developed. Andrew, Alexander's brawny brother,The Duke of Caithness who is bowled over by Lana, Hannah's other sister whose story along with her daughter Isobel is in the next book. We look forward to their stories in this new series.

I received this book free for review from the publisher.
