Our lives are built by small choices, tiny moments, and quiet thoughts—The Day by Day series is a gentle way to choose those moments and begin to build a life you love.
Fred McFeely Rogers was an American educator, minister, songwriter, and television host. Rogers was the host of the television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, in production from 1968 to 2001. Rogers was also an ordained Presbyterian minister.
I could never give Mister Rogers anything less than 5 stars. He was such an example to many of us growing up, and his quotes espousing love, kindness and compassion live on. Here you will find a quote or a song for every day of the year.
Mister Rogers was a special man, and I’m glad to see that his work continues to be shared with newer generations. This book is inspiring, just like the man himself.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Go for an eARC. All opinions are mine, and I have written this review voluntarily.
3.5⭐️ (not because of the content but because of the repetition)
I somehow didn’t realize before this that Mr Rogers was an ordained minister. It definitely tracks though. This book has a pretty heavy religious theme which might be alienating to a good chunk of people who might have otherwise sought out this collection of daily readings.
There were times when some days felt like almost exact replicas of previous days. Of course, almost no one will be reading this all the way through in a few days for the purpose of reviewing but I still felt kind of shortchanged. Mr Rogers had over 40 years of work to pull from. In discovering the repetition, I began to wish that this was broken up into themes or sections somehow. There were certainly plenty of themes to pull from: solitude, child development, creativity, kindness, parent child relationship, friendship, setting/reaching goals, anecdotes about others, anecdotes about himself, love, inner beauty, disappointments, communication, songs
Thank you to NetGalley and HachetteGo for the eARC!
A warm daily aspiration. Here are some of my favorites:
There are many times that I wish. I had heard that "just who you are at this moment, with the way that you're feeling, is fine. You don't have to be anything more than who you are right now." I'd like to think that it's also something that's happened to me through the years, tht I'm more able to accept myself as I happened to be, rather than as somebody thought I should be.
We all long to be cared for, and that longing lies at the root of our ability to be caregivers.
Here's a gift you may not have expected. It's a gift for you to give yourself. Sometime in your day today, try to turn off all the noises you can around you, and give yourself some "quiet time." In the silence, let yourself think about something. Or if possible... think about nothing.
We all know people who have grown up to dislike other people who are different-because they are different. I've often noticed that when someone feels that way, that person doesn't feel very good about his or her own differences.
Like many of you, I grew up watching Mister Rogers as a child. I found peace and understanding on his daily walks through his neighborhood. When a book of his gentle and thoughtful words became available, I thought it would make for a perfect winter’s day reading. This Beautiful Day presents some of Fred Roger’s most treasured reflections on life, heartfelt advice, and words of encouragement. The collection offers 365 daily reflections, of varying lengths and content, meant to encourage a positive outlook on life, compassion, kindness, and infuse light into your day. As you may already know, Fred Rodgers was an ordained minister, and this is evident in the legacy of words he’s left behind. If you are offended by the mention of God, than this book is not for you. For others it can be something like a “secular” daily devotional.
Here is a sample of what you might find:
“Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else.”
“You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are.
“I know how important it is to give up our expectations of perfection in any arena of our lives…What a heavy burden! Thank God we don’t have to earn every bit of love that comes our way.”
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers—so many caring people in this world.”
Many thanks to @HachetteBooks and @NetGalley for the pleasure of reading an advanced digital copy of This Beautiful Day.
Want to put a little Mr. Rogers into every day of the year? This book has 365 daily readings of varying length and content to inspire and motivate while encouraging a healthy outlook on life and your neighbor.
Twelve of the entries are songs from the "barrelful" that Fred Rogers created in his lifetime -- the last one being "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Others include pithy quotes, anecdotes, and favorite sayings from people he admired.
To give you a taste of what is inside, here are some of my favorites: #1 ~ "I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger: I like you just the way you are." #11 ~ "Forgiveness is a strange thing. It can sometimes be easier to forgive our enemies than our friends." #16 ~ "Anything that's human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable." #24 ~ "The real issue in life is not how many blessings we have, but what we do with our blessings. Some people have many blessings and hoard them. Some have few and give everything away." #49 ~ "Understanding invariably leads to finding caring ways to help." #62 ~ "It's not always easy for a father to understand the interests and ways of his son. It seems the songs of our children may be in keys we've never tried. The melody of each generation emerges from all that's gone before." #83 ~ "Nobody else can live the life you live. And even though no human being is perfect, we always have the chance to bring what's unique about us to life." #90 ~ "Listening is where love begins: listening to ourselves and then to our neighbors." #101 ~ "Here's a gift you may not have expected. It's a gift for you to give yourself. Sometime in your day today, try to turn off all the noises you can around you, and give yourself some "quiet time." In the silence, let yourself think about something. Or if possible. . .think about nothing." #129 ~ "There's a world of difference between insisting on someone's doing something and establishing and atmosphere in which that person can grow into wanting to do it." #143 ~ "The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. I once heard a little boy say to someone, "You can't make me mad. I don't even like you." #145 ~ "Think of the ripple effect that can be created when we nourish someone. One kind of empathetic word has a wonderful way of turning into many." #165 ~ "Grandparents are both our past and our future. In some ways they are what has gone before, and in others they are what we will become." #200 ~ "We speak with more than our mouths. We listen with more than our ears." #224 ~ "Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is right here and now." #234 ~ "One of my wise teachers, Dr. William F. Orr, told me, "There is only one thing evil cannot stand and that is forgiveness." #255 ~ "You don't ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you. When I say, "It's you I like," I'm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. . . that deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive: love that conquers hate, peace that rises trimphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed." #317 ~ "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers--so many caring people in this world." #332 ~ "When I was ordained, it was for a special ministry, that of serving children and families through television. I consider that what I do through Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is my ministry. A ministry doesn't have to be only through a church, or even through an ordination. And I think we all can minister to others in this world by being compassionate and caring."
Thanks for being my neighbor on Goodreads and reading this review. Mr. Rogers says it all so much better than I could. If you have Mr. Rogers fan in your life this would make an excellent Christmas gift. It would also be a thoughtful gift idea for a new parent.
My appreciation to Hachette Go and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
This Beautiful Day: Daily Wisdom from Mister Rogers by Fred Rogers is a very highly recommended collection of daily inspirational quotes in the Day by Day Series. The introduction written by LeVar Burton is an tribute to the beloved television host of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, author, producer, and Presbyterian minister.
The numbered 365 daily reflections include affirming daily quotes from Mr. Rogers, personal stories, songs he wrote, and inspirational quotes he likes from others. The quotes are mostly short quick selections that provide kind, nurturing advice and insight into living each day with meaning and intention.
An example of the day 61 quote: "You are a very special person. There is only one like you in the whole world. there's never been anyone exactly like you before, and there never will be again. Only you. And people can like you exactly as you are." An affirmation that everyone needs to reflect on from time to time.
Although you could read through all the daily missives at one time, this is better appreciated when used as a source of daily supportive messages, some of which may inspire further reflection. This would be a lovely gift! Thanks to Hachette Books for providing me with an advance reader's copy via . My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion. http://www.shetreadssoftly.com/2024/1...
This little book contains 365 quotes by Mr. Rogers. They tend to be about one short paragraph, though there are occasional song lyrics and stories. They are gentle and affirming with a lot of talk about acknowledging your feelings and protecting children. He was a minister and there is a bit of religion, but mostly it’s just a few lines per day about giving yourself grace, doing good, and being honest with yourself. Most of it is not particularly profound but it is positive and encouraging.
I do wish there was context to the quotes, as it never says where any are from like interviews or books he wrote. Most seem spoken to adults, not the type of things he told his audience of children. I think I would have preferred more of those. Also, he is listed as the author but clearly someone else compiled this and someone else is profiting. I really wanted transparency and information there.
It’s a sweet book that would certainly be nice to open up each day.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette for an eARC. All opinions are mine, and I have written this review voluntarily.
How could anyone not enjoy a little wisdom from our favorite neighbor each day? This book is structured so that you have a page to read every day for a year from different texts, speeches, songs, and other media written and created by Fred Rogers. It's affirmative and heartful with the same feelings of compassion that Fred Rogers emulated in his lifetime. The introduction by LeVar Burton is a testament to Rodger's lasting impact on the world.
My only "negative" if you can even call it that, is that I would have liked a bit of context with each daily excerpt. It would have been nice to have the origins of the writings on each page so that you could either seek out the full form or understand the audience this was written for.
Regardless, this book is written for adults and is as relevant now as decades ago. It is a must-read to become the best neighbor you can be each day.
365 useful stories, anecdotes, quotes, song lyrics, etc. from my old friend, Mr. Rogers.
I am a collector of quotes, so I enjoyed the book for this reason. Also, many of the stories had to do with teaching and children. As a teacher and a coach, I found this to be useful.
I few quotes I liked:
#76: Often out of periods of losing come the greatest strivings toward a new winning streak.
#199: When I was a boy I used to think that strong meant having big muscles, great physical power; but the longer I live, the more I realize that real strength has much more to do with what is not seen. Real strength has to with helping others.
#207: One of the greatest dignities of humankind is that each successive generation is invested in the welfare of each new generation.
#318: We want to raise our children so that they can take a sense of pleasure in both their own heritage and the diversity of others.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for this early copy in exchange for an honest review.
It's exactly what it says it is on the cover; formatted to be read one numbered passage at a time (or you can do like I did and read it all in one go and cry), Mr Rogers's words of encouragement, acceptance, understanding, and love fill every single page. The introduction by LeVar Burton was truly heartwarming and it felt so apparent that Mr. Burton really cared about Mr. Rogers. I was hooked from page one and read it one sitting late at night when I was feeling down. Mr. Rodgers's advice was soothing and helped me feel better.
I think this would be a nice gift for a friend or family member that likes daily devotionals or a nice little coffee table book. I recommended it to several of my own relatives.
This book brings together a compilation of 365 quotes and songs from Fred Rogers, the man who brought so much peace and comfort to children for three decades on his show, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. With a forward by LeVar Burton, another of my childhood heroes, this book was like a warm blanket to wrap yourself up in. So many of the truths he shared hit just as hard in adulthood as they did when we first heard them. Sometimes we all need a reminder that we are lovable just the way we are and that the impact we have on others may never truly be known to us. Whether someone chooses to read one passage a day or keep this on their nightstand or coffee table to reference when they need kind and thoughtful wisdom, I can't imagine a person who wouldn't benefit from having this in their home library.
This Beautiful Day is a collection of 365 daily reflections filled with generosity, compassion, joy, encouragement, acceptance, understanding and love from the great Fred Rogers. Each page is filled with wisdom and advice that we all can use in our lives. The book incorporated quotes, personal stories, songs, his thoughts and advice.
Fred Rogers was a wonderful example of what all of us should be or strive to be. He was a man filled with love, compassion, understanding, kindness and much more. He was a soft spoken, peaceful man who brought comfort to children and understood children.
I always loved watching his show, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. He had knowledge of children. He used puppets, a trolley and make believe to educate and entertain children and adults. He will be missed every day.
I love the messages of Mr. Rogers. Such a kind man that spread so much joy in the world! That said, this book left me wanting more. The daily quotes are short and sweet, but there is nothing more than a quote on the page for each day. I would have loved to see something more - something about how he embraced that principle in his every day life, or how by living that value he did something fantastic - a story or something to go along with the quote of the day. Also, my biggest pet peeve is religious books that are simply categorized as self-help. In my opinion this book should be categorized as "religious, inspirational, and spiritual" as the daily quotes mention God multiple times. Thank you to Hachette books and NetGalley for the ARC!
Very nice book! It really gives you something to think about! There are 365 entries, one for each day of the year. In other reviews, I noticed some reviewers didn’t like that there were some entries that seemed to be repeated several times. Nothing that this book is meant to be read one entry per day, maybe the repetitive nature of some of the entries would not be quite so noticeable and might even be read with a different emphasis or revelation, depending on where you are at (physically, mentally, emotionally, etc) that particular day of your life. Mr. Roger’s was a remarkably peaceful man whose whole life was spent focusing on others rather than himself. I think that is an incredible thing to be able to say about someone!
This Beautiful Day Do you crave your daily visit with Mr. Rogers from your childhood? This book gives you a few minutes each day with Mr. Rogers. Each day there is a very short quote that you can reflect on and apply to your day. I liked that there are no dates on each entry so that you can start your journey on any day of the year. I also like that each entry is on its on page which gives you an uncluttered view of the day’s thoughts which allows for focus on that thought alone. Get your copy December 3, 2024!
Thank you, Net Galley, Fred Rogers and Hachette Books, for the opportunity to preview this gem. The opinions shared are my own.
Who doesn't give Fred Rogers 5-stars? His wisdom and simple way of being a good person resonates with more than just a generation who grew up watching him on the screen. This book with daily tidbits provide thought to begin the day. I found each wisdom to allow my mind to wander, thinking how to be better. Beginning the day with this book really could have the power to stay positive, kind, and create sunshine for someones not so sunny day. Loved this book, it would make a great gift, keepsake.
Go buy this gem for sure!
Thank you NetGalley and Hachette books for the advanced reader copy.
When I was in college years ago, a small group of us went to see a taping of one of Fred Rogers’ shows, and so when I saw that there was a book by him, I knew I wanted to read it.
In 400 pages, which sounds like a lot, most of his wisdom is shared in brief moments, but even just reading it, I could hear his voice as I read his words. Some are brief, where others are more profound, and it brought back so many memories of that day, and how genuinely himself he was.
A sweet collection of his thoughts, of moments he shared, and a glimpse into how and why he was beloved by so many.

Many thanks for the ARC provided by Hachette Books / Hachette Go
As an educator, parent, and long-time fan of Fred Rogers' work, I greatly enjoyed reading this compilation of his quotes and songs. I appreciated the format of the book: 365 quotes/songs, one for each day. I think this would translate beautifully into a daily calendar. I found that some of the quotes could get a bit repetitive, but that was to be expected given the sheer volume of quotes pulled. Mostly, I was impressed by how far ahead of his time Fred Rogers was when it came to making children feel seen, heard, and cared about.
Does everyone want a warm hug, every day? From a delightful childhood memory--even for my [arguably, identifies as] Zennial and Gen Z kids, who were also raised with Mister Rogers in their preschool days--in a turbulent world, This Beautiful Day radiates warmth, light, and gentleness with each page. Perfect for someone looking for reminders of childhood, or people looking to add more intentionality and mindfulness to their new year. Love, love, loved it.
My thanks to NetGalley and Hachette/Balance Books for the opportunity to preview this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
Into a world filled with contention, politics, greed, and overall meanness comes Fred Rogers to the rescue. What an incredible gift for those like me who grew up watching the late Mr. Rogers. Filled with personal stories, encouraging words, comforting wisdom, and general Fred Rogers goodness.I read through this book for a review, but look forward to savoring it day by day. Thanks to Hatchette Book Group for the advance copy in exchange for this review.
I loved reading through the quotes in this book! There are over 300 quotes filled with wise and sage advice on many subjects. One of my favorite quotes was “ Feeling good about ourselves is essential in our being able to love others.” The introduction was written by LeVar Burton and is a beautiful tribute to Fred Rogers. This would be a great book to add to your bookshelf!
Thank you NetGalley and Hachette Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
The book is lovely. These amazing quotes and wisdom are very helpful and inspirational. I loved watching Mister Roger’s Neighborhood when I was little. Some of them reminded me of the show.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to read this collection of wisdom and quotes and do a review.
This is a delightful read. It's the kind of book you want to give to a graduate, child, friend - anyone really. It's a lovely reminder of the importance of goodness and love, building community, and being neighborly. The introduction by LeVar Burton is so kind. Thanks to NetGalley for an early copy - reading this was good for my soul.
I know that I will come back again and again to the gentle, beautiful wisdom contained in these pages from the mind and heart of one of the people I admire most. Fred Rogers’ words, if pondered and followed, will surely help one to become the best neighbor one could be.
A beautiful compilation of Mister Roger's wisdom to adults and children alike. I took my time reading this as I re-read certain sections various times to really let his words sink into my heart and soul. This is a book I will definitely revist time and time again as his words still ring true to everyone to this day.
I've read multiple books by and about Mister Rogers and I do consider Fred Rogers as a person to emulate in many ways. So, I was disappointed by this collection of quotes. I'm not sure if it was the lack of context for many of the quotes or the choice of quotes themselves but relatively few of them struck me as noteworthy.
This is a wonderful inspiring and heartwarming tribute to a childhood legend! A collection of 365 daily reflections, with words of wisdom that only Mr. Rogers could give. Highly recommend! I thank Netgalley and Hachette Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
So many pearls of wisdom. We sure need Mr Rogers in our challenging world today! So many simple yet deep truths in this list of 365 quotes. If only all the adults in the world would take his advice to heart. A very inspiring, comforting read.
It’s daily wisdom from Mr. Rogers! There’s not much more that needs to be said. My generation watched him and Sesame Street daily and maybe a book like this could inspire us to again work to see the best in others.
Thanks to Hachette Books and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
