Jessica is going to Hell.

After settling a fragile truce between the vampires, werewolves and witches, the last thing Jessica wants to do is face the demons head on. But when the Prince of Hell kidnapped her brother, he set into motion a chain of events that even Jessica doesn't have the power to stop.

Now, Jessica must go into battle again. But Hell is a whole new beast—new rules, more dangerous demons, and an entirely foreign realm. And when Jessica is dropped into the Underworld too soon, without protection or the help of her friends, she must figure out just how powerful she can be... or she will never make it out alive.

I debated for quite some time as to whether I was going to continue this series; I loved FULL BLOODED, book 2 was decent as well, but 3 was the beginning of JESSICA MCCLAIN's downward spiral, and although I enjoyed the first half of RED BLOODED, the second part convinced me to throw in the towel. I liked the world-building as far as Hell was concerned, and was happy that Jess' wolf played a larger role in this installment, however the insta-mastering of powers reared its ugly head again, and the incredibly predictable Lili outcome knocked my opinion of the heroine's intelligence down by several pegs. For me, RED BLOODED was pretty much split right down the middle good / bad wise which is why I am giving it three stars.

The demon realm was by far my favourite aspect of this novel because we got to meet a bunch of new beasties (i.e. Chupacabra, demon piglets, wyverns, orthus, etc), and discovering an author's version of Hell is always entertaining. I wish that Carlson would have let her imagination run a bit more rampant—evil glamoured to look like humans in a sterile environment was rather boring—and, I would have preferred to have had the food assembly line angle wrapped-up. It felt like something horribly disturbing was about to be revealed, but instead readers were left hanging. I'm guessing that the piglets were their food source; however that was never actually specified.

Ok now, let's play a little word association game here to prove my point, shall we? If I were to say Hell & Lili; what's the first thing that pops into your head? Perhaps I've read one too many paranormals which made the villain's true nature blatantly obvious, but I don't think that guessing was that big of a leap. Once her identity was anti-climatically unveiled, the events that followed were as predictable as the sun rising in the East. And, I really didn't care for the whole the One thing because it was too much a rip-off of THE MATRIX (again, if I say the One—what do you think of?) & HIGHLANDER (motto: "In the End, there can be only one.") for my tastes. I realize that there are no original ideas, but at least change the name...

I liked that McClain's wolf was at the forefront of this story because that was one of my main complaints about the previous book. How a heroine can be a werewolf, but NEVER shift is just beyond me. Anyway, I was disappointed that the lupine aspects mostly revolved around internal conversations instead of physical manifestations, but again, at least Jess' furry side WAS acknowledged. I was also happy that we got answers as far as the prophecy / Cain myth were concerned, although the heroine once again gains a crapton of abilities in mere seconds. I get that it's her destiny, and that her ancestors have set a precedent of this, however character growth is VERY important in Urban Fantasy, and this series is severely lacking in that respect because of the insta-mastering.

RED BLOODED began on a high note, but then abruptly shifted gears around the halfway mark which only served as a reminder of how far this series has strayed since books 1 & 2. I personally do not care for this new direction, and as a result will not be following JESSICA MCCLAIN's adventure any further.

Well, it’s official: when it comes to urban fantasy, Amanda Carlson can do no wrong. Her fourth book in the Jessica McClain series is her fourth success in a row, which is no small feat. Admittedly, it might be my least favorite of the four, but that’s only because the competition is so strong. All things considered, this is one of the strongest, most consistent urban fantasy series still being published.

Red Blooded takes Jessica McClain to the demon realm in search of her twin Tyler, who was taken from her at the very end of the previous book. Instead of going with a group of paranormals and friends, Jessica ends up there alone through a series of unfortunate events, and she wanders around quite a bit before reuniting with the others. Instead of bringing a new freshness to the series as I’m sure it was supposed to, the complete change of setting succeeded in alienating us from the secondary characters we’ve grown to love. In addition, the entire demon realm adventure seemed directionless and it was difficult to understand why Carlson chose to make such a move.

On the other hand, the demon realm itself was a very vivid and imaginative setting. I loved She’ol, the demon capital, and all the different kinds of demons there. Their social structure was described fairly well and untangling the rules of their society provided a lot of entertainment. That’s the sort of thing urban fantasy readers usually enjoy, and here it was done very well.

As always, I found Jessica’s relationship with her wolf and their rather odd dynamic quite fascinating. She’s not a regular shapeshifter like the ones we’re used to. Jessica and her wolf are two completely separate entities that share a body, and they communicate directly, especially when in danger. On the down side, Jessica is slowly turning into one of those all-powerful urban fantasy heroines, the ones that have no limits whatsoever, and it’s slowly becoming too much. The line isn’t far, though, and Carlson’s going to have to be very careful not to cross it.

Right now, however, this is a very strong, very reliable series and I hope it stays that way. With all the cross-genre novels that are currently being published, true urban fantasy books are increasingly difficult to find, and Jessica McClain series is UF in its purest form. That fact alone makes it special and worth your time.

I want to thank orbit for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

The book starts with Jessica trying to prepare herself with some training in magic (with the help from some witches) before she descends into hell to find her brother who has been captured by the Prince of Hell. And of course, nothing goes as it is planned and by sheer luck/mistake does she descends to hell a bit earlier than the witches and she had expected.

Red Blooded is the fourth book about Jessica McClain, the only female in a male race of werewolves. This is the first book in the series that I read so I have a bit of disadvantage in that everything is new to me and it doesn’t get easier that so little is explained. During my reading of this book, I had to gather information about the characters and past experience to make sense of the story in this book.

I can see the appeal of the book, but I think you should start with book one and not like me jump in and read book four. I usually don’t read books in the middle of a series. But Red Blooded arrived home to me as a bit of a surprise and I thought what the heck, it looks like a book that will not take forever to read and it's a paranormal.

Overall the book wasn’t bad, I just got a bit impatient towards to end, but I think it had very much to do with the feeling of frustration that there is so much back history that I didn’t know that mattered to the story on this book. People that popped into the story and you get some info about them but not enough.

Would I read the previous books? Yes I would, even though that whole heroine, the one in the kind, prophesied to greatness, is something I feel can be a bit annoying. One thing for sure I would rather read the previous books in the series before I would read the next one.

Another fun story by Amanda Carlson, whose Jessica McClain series has wormed its way into my heart. I was not a huge fan of Cold Blooded, book 3 in the series, and so this was a comeback story for me. And it was an intense thrill ride all the way through.

What this author does exceedingly well is world-building. The imagination that she has is off the charts! The demon world that this author created was creepy and intense and totally awesome.

I think the highlight of this story was the action. This plot was a mad dash all the way through, and I loved the excitement of it, the energy. It was very strong and very engaging.

But the story wasn't all perfect. The relationship between Jessica and Rourke always leaves me wanting more. They have so much chemistry and potential but they get so little page time as a couple. And what is with people interrupting them right when they are going to get down to business? Poor guys, they never get to have any fun.

Another issue that I had is that Jessica is becoming one of those super-heroines that I sometimes see in urban fantasy, the ones that are powerful and unstoppable to the point where it becomes excessive. A little vulnerability can be a good thing.

All in all, this series is one that I'm totally addicted too. Though it isn't perfect, it is consistently enjoyable and consistently entertaining.

Initial Thoughts: Another solid installment in the Jessica McCain series. This book takes Jess and the gang through Hell in search of her brother. The book is fast paced and the action is exhilarating, though the ending leaves me wanting the next book right now! In any case, Jess and Rourke are in my top 10 urban fantasy couples. I love that cat!

The Review:
Wow! Red Blooded was an awesome read and a treat for fans of Amanda Carlson's Jessica McClain series. The Jessica McClain series is one of urban fantasy's hidden gems. If you have not yet started the series, this is definitely one to move up the list.

I'm a little sad that Red Blooded is the last book in the series and to properly review this book would most likely involve spoilers, especially for people who have not read so far in the series. Let's just say that Jessica is thrown into a seemingly impossible situation - which she must resolve by the end of the book.

As I was reading this book, I thought that Red Blooded would make a really fun video game. Jessica travels through many of the domains of Hell meeting all sorts of nasty and scary creatures which she must either battle or outwit. Absolutely fascinating.

Oh yes, Rourke is in this too. What an entrance. What a cat.

Read the series - highly recommended.

I officially give up on this series. This was boring, and I haven't truly enjoyed a book since the very first one. The premise was good; but when Jessica went from a kickass babe to a near goddess with convenient powers that magically appeared as she needed them, the series started losing me. The Demon World was dull and boring; and the inane conversations with her inner wolf made me want to claw my eyes out.

Shame, because the series showed promise before it jumped the track and became something else entirely. This one and 'Cold Blooded' bore absolutely no similarity to the beginning of the series.

There were some parts of this book that I liked. There were other parts that didn’t serve it very well. I think the biggest problem is that the series is backing itself into a corner where the stakes just keep getting higher and higher and the heroine is becoming a supernova power in order to triumph. I’ll get back to that in a minute.

The story begins with Jessica on a mission to Hell in order to rescue her kidnapped brother, Tyler. The first third of the story is what worked best for me. It’s Jessica and her wolf, navigating through the dangers of the Underworld. It’s action packed and unapologetically so. It’s not trying to be romance. It’s not trying to be overly complex. It’s just Jessica fighting slimy pigs, ravenous wyverns, and chupacabras of varying size. The pacing was fast and furious and I flew through those pages.

Then it gets complicated. Jess encounters a prisoner in Hell who wants to team up. Only Jessica can’t decide whether she is friend or foe. And so begins the “bad feelings” she gets and the arguments with her wolf instinct. There are twists and re-twists; the good guys are bad; the bad guys are good. Then the really big bad is revealed and it’s utterly anticlimactic. It’s also trying to be bigger and badder than the sorcerers and vampires she faced in the last book, the Goddess she fought before that, and even the Prince of Hell himself. But what it really feels like is kind of meh. I feel like all of the twists and surprises were stuck in there in an attempt to keep things interesting, with no build to them.

It stands to reason that to fight the rising threats, Jessica needs to power up. But its just too easy and convenient. She is practically the end-all be-all at this point. Since she is practically the most powerful being in the world now, though, I guess it doesn’t need to rachet up again in the next installment, right?

There’s not much in the way of interpersonal development. She and Rourke are together, but I have never been sold on any love grown between them. Lust and mating connection, yeah, but now there isn’t even sexual tension to sustain my interest in their pairing. There is too much time spent on action to support any internal character development or growth, much less in a relationship. Jess grows physically and magically stronger but the rest… well, it’s not a book about feelings… or at least none that I feel while I am reading.

I don’t know. I liked it when it just embraced the action and didn’t try to be twisty or shocking or deeper. It feels like it’s trying to be something it’s not. And I am tired of the cliffhangers.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I like this series and it is true that I was curious to discover this new novel. I must say that Jessica still has many things to do. However, it is also true that some issues have bothered me a bit but I’ll talk about them later.

Jessica goes quite unexpectedly in hell alone and without any means of protection to save her brother. But this world is all new to her and she will have to understand the laws that govern it as they are very far from what she knows about. It is in this universe that she is going to have to try to avoid the prince, to ally with a very powerful demon who may well have a different plan on her own and of course to find her brother who is currently being tortured. But soon her allies will join her to help her in this quest for our greatest pleasure.

I enjoyed getting to know this hell that we hear so much about throughout the volumes and to discover its peculiarities because yes there are several. It was also interesting to see how Jessica was doing when she had to face events alone. However, it is true that her rides in hell were perhaps a bit too long for me, even if we learn more like that. The action starts in a mad rush when all the characters are together and I loved to see them all together to face this new obstacle. By cons, there is a moment that seemed a bit surreal for me and I just blocked on it. As they’re trying to escape our characters stop later in the quarters of the prince of hell while they do not know what’s going on and take a shower. I admit I was very surprised because the time does not lend itself. However, I loved the result and resolution of the story between the prince, her concubine and of course all our heroes.

Jessica will have to once again deal with the evolution of her powers and the advancement of the prophecy, and I’m curious to see what she will become in the next novel. Oh yes, because many issues are introduced here and will have a great impact in the future. However, I am a little disappointed by the end of the novel and by the cliffy which is ultimately for me a little too redundant with other volumes and I would have liked to see something different than another disappearance.

I feel like I have given a lot of points but the book is ok and it was a pleasure to see Jessica and the gang. I’m curious to see where Amanda Carlson will lead us in the future.

8/6 - I love this series! So much fun, so much action, so many unexpected twists and turns, and so much frustration because poor Jessica and Rourke can never get any time alone (or not properly sufficient time). The plot was like a non-stop rollercoaster ride, constantly going, leaving me completely unable to put the book down for the whole night, I HAD to finish no matter how late/early it was. I loved Carlson's Hell, it was so creative, so unearth-like. Something which I find fantasy authors sometimes struggle with is creating an alternate reality that really is nothing like our world - the demon feeding stations, the living walls, etc. Pure Blooded will be my second most highly anticipated book of the year (after Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop), thank goodness it's coming out this year and I don't have to wait for 2016.

3.5 Stars...A UTC team Review.

What are your first impressions of RED BLOODED?

Annie: While there’s a lot of action that goes on in the book, I was really waiting for the moment when it would come all together. This series has some cliffhanger endings so I feel like readers are constantly waiting for that one big moment, only to be left hanging. I’m holding off until that moment of anticipation occurs and we see what Amanda Carlson has been working towards to.

Angela: I anticipated an action packed novel and Carlson delivered just that. If we’re talking stomp versus romp, there’s definitely stomp all over this book. I would sum it up to Action and Adventure.

What did you think about Jessica and her powers?

Annie: I like Jessica. I think she has a level head on her shoulders. There’s something about a heroine who is able to handle her own and I think Jessica definitely fits into that category. Her powers are great but Jessica hones them quite quickly. She doesn’t struggle too hard and I wonder if showing her vulnerabilities more would make her character more multidimensional and relatable.

Angela: I love Jessica. She’s definitely on my top kick-ass-heroine. The girl can kick major ass from our realm all the way to the underworld. But I see your point Annie, she does come out of disasters with very little hardship. I think her weakness was her ties to her pack and family. She’d sacrifice anything for them even her happiness but I guess, she could have been more vulnerable. I didn’t particularly look for that but the romance….that, I looked for. =)

What are your thoughts on the romance of this book?

Annie: I didn’t go into this book expecting too much romance since the focus is definitely on the Urban Fantasy genre, but I’m a Romance girl at heart. I definitely wanted more of Rourke but I can’t say I was disappointed in it. One can only hope that there’s more of the purrrfect hero in future books.

Angela: Though I love a good action book, I am a romance reader first and foremost. In this series, I have fallen for Rourke and Jessica’s romance. I know, I know, this series of the UF genre but a girl can hope, right? I honestly wanted more Rourke time and I did not get enough of him. I’m glad he finally stepped up and told Jessica that she can’t run the show on her own so, maybe in the next book we’ll get more Rourke action. =)

We are into book four of the Jessica McClain series. How do you think the series has progressed so far?

Annie: As I mentioned before, there’s a ton of action in this series, especially in RED BLOODED. Politics continues to play a big part in the series and Jessica is managing it well. Despite all that, I’m still wondering where this series is going and what Carlson has planned for the endgame. I’m interested to see what she has planned next.

Angela: Well, Jessica as a character had evolved quite a bit from the first book. She has managed to get her own pack, made enemies and friends, finally get a love life, and save the world. At the end of this book, though it took long to get here, Carlson had revealed some information about Jessica that may lead to the end game you’re hoping for. Like you, I’m intrigued to see where Carlson will take Jessica next.

I would like to thank NetGalley & Orbit for granting me a copy of this e-ARC to read in exchange for an honest review. Though I received this e-book for free that in no way impacts my review.

WARNING: if you haven't read the previous books in this series, stop here. This review will reveal spoilers for the earlier books. In addition, this book will have some gaps you could drive a truck through if you try to read it as a stand-alone.

Goodreads Blurb:
After Jessica's brother is kidnapped and taken to the Underworld, she will stop at nothing to get him back. But before her grueling training is finished, Jessica's power mixes unexpectedly with the circle and she's dropped into the Underworld without protection or her escorts.

Like the other books in the series that come before, this book provides one heck of a ride. As always Jessica is smack dab in the middle of some kind of crisis, and with each book the crises continue to increase in magnitude. Whereas before the problems were essentially only Jessica's, the number of players involved climbs with each new addition to the series. By the time Ms. Carlson finishes this series it wouldn't surprise me if everyone on the planet was somehow actively involved in the finale.

Jessica continues to mature at a steady pace, which is pleasantly surprising. It could be argued that she doesn't need to mature so quickly since she isn't being given much time to process anything, yet that is part of what makes her growth so impressive. And her relationship with Rourke is sizzling hot, which adds another dynamic to her story.

The plot is chock full of twists and turns, which the characters race through at breakneck speed. It's kind of like watching an episode of "Top Gear" in which they drive a variety of super fast cars through the Italian Alps - except traveling with Jessica is much more exciting. (No commercials for one thing [just kidding], plus no chatting with the audience, or swapping cars for that matter.) Many characters from previous books are along for the ride, or at stop in for cameos. In addition to Tyler, who Jess has traveled to Hell to rescue, Rourke, Ray, Danny, Naomi, Tally, are just a few old friends who make an appearance. Of course the Prince of Hell is involved, and some new characters that are all over the map in relation to their status as friend or foe. A status that can change in the blink of an eye, and often remains fluid, leaving Jessica and team feeling as if they can't really trust anyone.

Just when you think you've got things figured out, some new information will pop up and change everything you were sure you'd figured out. Be prepared for this to happen more than once. In fact, based upon my experience, I suggest just rolling with the characters and not bothering to attempt to figure anything out, because it will almost certainly change a few more times before the cliffhanger ending of the book. Once again, as soon as I finished reading this ARC I was already aching to get my hands on the next installment in the series!

*My Thoughts*

Red Blooded (Jessica McClain #4) picks up where Cold Blooded left off, which is why you SHOULD NOT jump into this book without reading the previous installments first. If you have read the previous installment, you know that Jessica's brother Tyler has been taken to the Underworld by the Prince of Hell who wants Jessica to pay for some unnamed crimes. It is up to Jessica and crew to rescue him, and find a way back home. The question remains, what exactly are Jessica's crimes, and why now when the supernatural world is in turmoil?

Amanda Carlson's Jessica McClain series is an incredible example of awesome Urban Fantasy! The series has been a whirlwind of action and adventure from the getgo and the pace doesn't let up with Red Blooded!

Jessica, Rourke and Ray are planning on entering the Underworld in order to rescue Tyler who was taken by the Prince last go around. But the plans changed when Jessica accidentally enters the Underworld on her own. She decides to move forward with her plan anyway to rescue her brother, but she's going to need help navigating the place and that help comes from an imprisoned demoness named Lily. Jessica is leery of trusting her, but Lily proves her worth again and again.

This was definitely an exciting read, although I was sad to see Jessica without Rourke and her friends for nearly half the story. But they do gather together about halfway through as a nefarious plan in the Underworld starts to unfold and Jessica plans on stopping it.

At times I feel incredibly sad for Rourke and Jessica, for ever since they met, they rarely have time to be together. They have to steal whatever little moments that they can and Amanda definitely delivers on those moments. It definitely makes the moments all the sweeter, but still, there's some sadness for these two since time is always against them!

We see some returning characters in this one! Such as Ray and Naomi; Ray continues to surprise me with his personality. I didn't care for him when we first met him, but he's definitely growing on me now! Naomi wasn't in the story but for the end, but she is still yet another enjoyable side character that I always like seeing page time of!

The action doesn't stop until the very end when a new problem comes up and sets Jessica and her friends on their next course of action. And there's a whammy of a cliffhanger to case it off! It's going to make waiting for the next one just as unbearable as the wait for this one!

Red Blooded was a simply awesome read that is one not to be missed! With werewolves, action, romance, suspense, and a heroine with the best name ever--what's not to love?! ;)

I adore this series and was thrilled when I was granted access to this on Netgalley!! Every single book takes you on a rollercoaster ride and this is no different. I cant say too much about this because of spoilers so all I'll say is Jessica accidentally sends herself to Hell early, with no backup. She is in a whole different world with different rules and has to save her brother. Can Jessica stay alive long enough for someone to reach her?

This is book 4 in the series and poor Jessica never gets a break!! Nothing seems to go right for her and Red Blooded is no different. I love how Amanda Carlson can keep her characters growing from book to book. Jessica is still kick ass but she seems to be more capable of handling her powers in this book. Her relationship with her Wolf is also easier and they rely a lot more on each other.

We dont see much of Rourke in this one until towards the end but what we do see is awesome. He is so strong and such a rock for Jessica. I adore their relationship and they are one of my favourite couples.

I loved the new world the author created in Red Blooded. Hell is everything you'd expect but also nothing like you think. It is a creepy horrible place where the sunshine burns and you definitely don't want to be outside after dark either!! The creatures are things from nightmares and time works differently there. It was incredibly cool to read about.

Anyway. Red Blooded was everything I've come to expect from this series and more. There's more of everything, more action, more adventure, more wolf and more kick assness!! Its an action packed, edge of your seat book. Carlson still manages to throw in some twists and turns that will leave you gasping and really raises the bar with this installment. Its a thrilling additive read and one I'd highly recommend.

Amanda Carlson is also the queen of cliffhangers and this ends in one heck of a one! I so need the next book now!!!

Wow I do not believe just how much I loved this book! I have always enjoyed this series with its unique heroine and it's surely a must read for fans of urban fantasy but with this instalment the author has taken it up a notch and then some! There is so much happening in this book and the heroine Jessica is well and truly in the thick if it. She has survived so much already and fought so hard for those she loves but when the Prince of Hell targets her brother she is really going to need to get out her big girl panties ! Anyone else would run screaming in the opposite direction but not this girl no she will stop at nothing to get Tyler back and if that means quite literally going to Hell well bring it on!
So much comes to fruition in this book. Jessica is much feared as a long foretold prophecy mentions her causing widespread chaos and change in Hell so naturally as far as the Prince of Hell is concerned taking her out is a priority but nothing is ever straight forward. Somehow Jessica has to find a way to get in , get Tyler and then somehow get them both out again but even with the witches on her side things have a way of going wrong. Jessica may have a powerful Lycan form but it's the magical properties in her blood that create all kinds of trouble and speaking of trouble in the Underworld there's only so much a girl can hide from. Jessica needs to keep all her wits sbout her and trust her inner wolf as she takes a journey that will truly test her mettle .
I loved this book! Yes I have always liked this series but the non stop roller coaster ride the author gives us here was simply adrenaline filled! There's so much humour written into it as well from clumsy antics to demon piglets! The author has written in such a way that I had pictures in my mind of a truly unusual version of Hell that felt both awe inspiring and yet at the same time as creepy as well, Hell!
Jessica has come into her own and fully embraced all that she can be. For most of this book she has none of her usual allies with her but fans of Roarke need not fear he is still a very real presence in her life and as this is urban fantasy the sex takes a back seat but that does not mean it lacks romance . For me personally it's the little things like the grumpy Ray manning up and accepting the changes that life is throwing about that makes this action packed story so very good. Nothing is going to be easy though and both old and new enemies will make strange bedfellows as our heroine journeys through the Underworld. Jessica is truly a heroine to get behind and finally (thankfully) it seems as if both this reader and the characters realise that. Does she rescue her brother? Well as this is Jessica you can be assured of one thing and that's the fact that she will keep going no matter what . There was very little pack involvement in this story which might disappoint some readers but the ending opens up a whole new can of worms and if the next instalment is as fast paced and exciting as this then I for one will be panting to get my hands on it. I have always liked these stories but this book I loved. This series is a delight to read and I heartily recommend it.

Red Blooded is the fourth book in Amanda Carlson’s Jessica McClain series. If one of your favorite parts of this series is that you are dumped right in the middle of the action the moment you crack open the book and it doesn’t let you down until the very end then you will not be disappointed in this one. There is no settling into these books, let me tell you. And there is nothing wrong with that.

I can’t say that I noticed much growth in Jessica this time around but we do see her powers grow and change. That is one of my favorite parts of reading this character – where Amanda is leading her is fun to guess and discover. All of the characters that we have come to like make appearances in this book. Roarke, of course, and Jessica’s brother are focuses. The book is about how Jessica is preparing to go into the Underworld to rescue her brother so it’s no surprise that he plays a big role in this book. What did surprise me was how much of the story took place with just Jessica on the page.

Ray, not usually one of my favorite characters, was actually decent in this installment. Selene (yes, she makes an appearance again) took his place as the character that drove me nuts this time. She committed some pretty insane crimes in the last book and she is being punished for them…but she’s acting like the victim and that was the part that made me shake my head. SHE is the one who sold her soul and now she’s complaining that she doesn’t belong there and blah blah blah. Puh-lease and cry me a river. But there is a new character that made up for my frustration towards Selene. She keeps you guessing and I feel you will all like her.

I really liked Amanda’s take on the Underworld. The creatures are creepy and the different areas are well thought out and very cool…in a yuck sort of way. We are talking about Hell after all. I also liked how the Prince of Darkness is well groomed and pristine and demands his demons be that way as well. Another little twist that made Amanda’s Hell stand out to me.

With barely a moment to breathe, Red Blooded keeps you entertained by keeping you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning to the very end. My only wish is that maybe the action chill out a little bit for the next installment so we can focus more on Roarke and Jessica’s relationship. They have great chemistry and you can tell they care for each other but there really hasn’t been much page time with just the two of them in any of the books of this series and I feel it would be nice to get more of that. If the ending to this book is any indication (yes, this book ends with a moment that leaves you demanding the next book now), Pure Blooded should be another fun and high octane read when it releases in 2015.

I've loved all the previous other books in the Jessica McClain series but I felt a little fed up with Red Blooded to be honest. Don't get me wrong it was well written and the characters were as always top notch but the storyline felt the same and there wasn't anything new and fresh to really keep me hooked in.

To start with I nearly DNF it at 22% because it just felt like it was going no where fast but I made myself continue because I loved the other books and sometimes a new storyline takes a while to set-up but to be honest I just didn't love Red Blooded at all.

It was great to see all the previous characters again but we didn't really get anything more from them than what we had already seen and I think that was my main problem with Red Blooded. It was the same kind of book as the previous ones. Whereas the previous books were still setting everything up therefore the characters, the places, the situations were all shiny and new and different, now we're four books in and yes while Red Blooded may take place in the Underworld all the characters were the same and so were the circumstances.

*spolier ahead*

They even went and brought Seline back for heaven's sake! Yes it might be pivotal for the plot twist but it doesn't fill me with warm fussy's because that was one character I was glad to see the back of and did not want and still don't want that storyline to drag out or on because really once was more than enough! Also it doesn't look like she's actually changed so what are we really getting out of this?! One baddie we thought they'd already defeated brought back to either be a goodie or to become a baddie again.

I'm not a fan of repetitive story lines, especially not in urban fantasy where the characters consistently stay the same. It gets boring fast. I've found there tends to be a bit of a theme with Jessica. A situation arises, she runs head first into a situation, hopes for the best, tries to figure it out along the way, includes her wolf, and her crazy gang {or is that pack?}, everything works out then another situation arises at the end of the book to hook you into the next one.

To be honest though this is how many other story lines go but normally I'm not so aware of of it because I'm so caught up in reading but not with Red Blooded.

However, saying that I am hoping that the next book Pure Blooded will be much better because it will be involving Jessica's Father's pack and maybe some new characters along with the original ones that might help change the dynamics of this series.

Dude!!! This whole series is completely action packed, but this one… THIS ONE!! Like woah! I mean enemies everywhere, and everyone is always trying to kill her, and then enemies become allies, and crazy demons, and I am still sitting her with my mouth on the floor. Somebody get me some screws to put my jaw back in place. Jess has completely gone over the top this time. Anyways, Jess has gone to hell to get her brother, but of course with her, nothing ever goes according to plan. She was supposed to time her entrance, and have people with her, except it didn’t go that way, she is dumped unprepared into hell by herself. Heh! Jess is one of the best heroines I’ve EVER read. Her powers are growing and changing, and it seems the world wants her to stay down, or just die. She is such a crafty chick. LOL
She finally gets some back up but let me tell you that she goes on a whole adventure by herself. You get to learn some of the inner workings of hell, and those who play big roles there. And by the time she gets back up, all hell has broken loose and it’s like every demon has come to see the fireworks. :) Hehehe I just saw my pun… All hell broke loose, in hell :) ok excuse my giggle for a moment. And of course, she gets to met up with most of the normal characters, but don’t expect them for most of the book. And we meet some new bigger players, and I suspect we will meet even scarier people in the next book which I am already dying for!!
The world building especially of hell if magnificent. I loved the creeptastic feel of everything and the different types of demons and creatures that live there. The chupacabra is one! And the Prince, well he is something all on his own. Hell I bet he could have his own book! And the writing, flawless as always. I could not put it down. If you aren’t reading this series, I don’t think we could be friends. It’s just too awesome!!! I am all about the awesome action, the gritty feel, and the magnificent cast! 5 WOLFY PAWS!!! Majorly awesome!

**No Spoilers

The Jessica McClain series is a recent one, but it already has a special place in my heart! Since Full Blooded I have been utterly in love with the characters Amanda Carlson created and every year I look forward to their next adventure.

Red Blooded is another fast-paced, heart-stopping thrill ride and I loved every second of it! It only lost 0.5 a star because for some reason Cold Blooded resonated with me more. Probably because Jessica and Roarke had more page time together then, but they still show up plenty together in Red Blooded, don't worry ;)

I really enjoy the world Amanda created and Red Blooded takes us on another thrilling journey exploring another part of that world. Jessica finds out a lot about her fate and we get a lot of answers in this book and even more questions.

I really don't wanna ruin anything, so just give this series a shot if you enjoy Urban Fantasy like I do, this one is a keeper!

I can't wait for Pure Blooded!

3.5 - I am a lousy review writer, but here is a review by Douglas that sums it up perfectly: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Though I did not suffer from his CRS (Can't. Remember... Stuff) regarding the callers identify at the end. LOL I plan on finishing the series as I have enjoyed the series overall, though I truly believe this could have been an amazing series with tweaking and editing.

I don't know what happened to the series but this book was awful. I didn't sympathize with anyone and when I ended up skipping sections and was relieved to hit the last page.

Wow another brilliant action, drama, danger and magic packed installment in the Jessica McClain Series from Amanda Carlson! Loved it (of course).

INITIAL THOUGHTS
Approaching this book I was truly looking forward to it. I was certainly ready for some more kick butt Jessica McClain, her purrrfect mate Rourke, James and Marcy, Tally and Maggie and more. Though Jessica and Rourke are the "main characters" I also love the other characters too.

MY REVIEW
So I was super lucky to receive a paperback and e-book of this title in exchange for my honest review. I love the book cover, it fits really well with the rest of the series so far, which I do like. The female on the cover is the kick butt main character, Jessica. I'd say the circle is there to represent the witches circle as certain characters have to travel through to get to Hell.
There's the words "Damned To Hell" which is quite literally what has happened to Jessica. I usually hate recommendations on the front covers of books but this one is done well and it is by Karen Chance too!
So the rather short blurb explains what the book is about perfectly and concisely. Jessica's brother Tyler was kidnapped in Cold Blooded and taken to the Underworld.
So would I pick this book up in a bookstore shelf purely because of the cover? Oh yes!
Jessica is obviously eager to go rescue her brother but acknowledges the fact that she needs to be prepared for what she will meet when she gets there not to mention learning how to use a witches circle to travel there. Jessica also need to learn how to control her newer manifesting powers. /a decision is made as to who will accompany Jessica to Hell to help in the rescue of Tyler. In the meantime the head of the Witches Coven, Tally is helping Jessica, trying to teach her how to use the magic within her. On one such training session with Tally, Maggie blurts out that the "kitty is going to be so mad" (Maggie calls Jessica's mate Rourke, Kitty) and then almost instantaneously Jessica is sent through the circle alone and straight into the Underworld. Though Jessica's main objective is finding and rescuing her brother Tyler she will also have to deal with all the demons she meets along the way as well as The Prince Of Hell himself who still wishes to put her on Trial for killing a low level demon. The "crime" Jessica committed is quite a trivial one which makes her wonder what else The Prince Of Darkness may be up to. Upon arriving in Hell, Jessica discovers that the sun in hell burns her skin, so its very convenient that she can regenerate and heal herself. After an encounter with chupacabra's, squealing pigs and low level demons Jessica finds herself in a maze of extraordinary tunnels. Some of the tunnels seem like they have flint glittering contained in them and others look to have veins pulsating within them. Jessica soon finds herself being chased and ducks into a room that is holding a strange demon-like women prisoner inside it. Jessica ends up realising she has no choice but to put her trust in this new acquaintance who is reluctant to reveal her name. Who is the mystery prisoner? Will Jessica find Tyler and manage to rescue him? What will happen if she stands trial? So many questions, the answers to which are in the book, ready for you to discover. As always with books by Amanda Carlson this one is action packed, drama filled and a breeze to read! This book is centered more on demons and witches, but returns to pack matters at the very end. I really liked the new characters that were introduced to us, the reader, in this book, such as the Princess Of Hell. Fate also plays a great part in this book, with the historical scriptures being quoted by various characters in the book. We also learn more about "The Coalition" and the fact it is made up of representatives from the five races. I think the coalition will come more to the forefront in the books that follow this one. There are also plenty of kick-butt action for Jessica and her pack. The book ends with worrying about the "man-made" wolves. In fact most of the pack are somewhere in the Everglades. So Jessica and her pack return from their "hellish" journey to go right to another problem. And it is that state of worrying about her father and the pack that we leave Jessica in. Talk about a cliff hanger!
So did I enjoy the book? Once again, totally loved it. Would I recommend the book? I would yes! I can honestly say I have read and loved every book in this series so far! Would I read more in this series? Definitely I'd read Pure Blooded if it was available right now! Would I read other titles by Amanda Carlson? Yes, I am reading and enjoying her Sin City novellas too.

She'd sacrifice anything for them even her happiness but I guess, she could have been more vulnerable.  I didn't particularly look for that but the romance....that, I looked for. =)

What are your thoughts on the romance of this book?

Annie: I didn't go into this book expecting too much romance since the focus is definitely on the Urban Fantasy genre, but I'm a Romance girl at heart. I definitely wanted more of Rourke but I can't say I was disappointed in it. One can only hope that there's more of the purrrfect hero in future books.

Jessica’s off to hell to rescue her brother who’s being held captive there. She’s still unable to communicate with her father, the alpha, but she has bigger concerns with finding her brother. Especially since time acts differently in hell, one hour or one year could have passed for her brother since he was taken so Jess is determined to get there as soon as she’s able to work a bit of magic the witches are trying to help her with. The witches know she won’t last long in hell if she doesn’t have better command of her magic and creating protective circles, but when a trial test run goes wrong, Jessica takes in and holds on to a type of magic she shouldn’t have been able to and the next thing you know, POP, Jessica is transported to hell.

As soon as she arrives, Jessica comes across another woman being held captive, Lili, who spins a tale of woe to Jess. It’s clear from the start we don’t know whether to believe what Lili is saying, that she’s set on revenge against the Prince of Hell, who she claims, has trapped her here or if her motivates are drastically different. Jessica doesn’t feel as though she has a choice but to form an alliance with Lili when she offers to lead Jessica to her brother for Jess’s help in freeing her from the cell that’s been spelled against her. And this begins Jessica’s crazy adventures in hell that go from encountering all types of dangerous beings in her path to her brother, to finding her brother, having her friends pop into hell to help out, a show down with a powerful character and the birth of a new Coalition.

For as much action as there is in Red Blooded, I found myself bored with the story and the pacing throughout the entire book. I kept thinking that there was so much action going on, I should be on the edge of my seat, instead even with so much going on, it didn’t feel like much progress was being made, like one step forward, two steps back the entire time. Nearly the entire book takes place in hell, and it got to the point where I just wanted it to be over. Every time Jessica and her group would get close to getting out, something else would come at them, or another obstacle got in the way. It was just too much.

There were a few interesting series-storyline developments, mainly the formation of the supernatural Coalition and its members. That will be interesting to see play out in future books. There’s still the ongoing storyline centered around Jessica’s father and their pack. This leads to the book’s cliffhanger. Yes, each book ends with a cliffhanger and even though I know this going in, I still hate it. I didn’t finish the book thinking about how anxious I was to get the next story based on how Red Blooded ends. Instead I finished and thought, typical. Not exactly the reaction one wants to have when finishing a book that ends in mid-action.

On the romance side, since Jessica is alone in hell for a good portion of the book, her mate, Rourke, isn’t around. He does eventually show up as part of the group that pops into hell. They have a few stolen moments together but that’s about it.

I can’t say I was all that taken with Red Blooded. I still find myself interested in Jessica and her world, the powers she’s still trying to manage within herself. The action here was non-stop but I just didn’t feel like there was as much progress made as there should have been so parts of the book were a bit boring and it was an easy read to put down. I’ll still keep going with the series for now, but even with the routine cliffhanger, I won’t be waiting on pins and needles for Jessica’s next adventure.

Warning: Cliffhanger (Status: Really? Really?)

After the Prince of Hell kidnapped her brother, Jessica McClain has to go to Hell to save him. When she unexpectedly turns up there without any help backing her up, she has to figure out how to do this all on her own.

After Cold Blooded, I'm glad Carlson is getting back to the story at hand. I enjoyed Red Blooded a lot more. So far I appreciate this book the best out of the series because finally, finally, we are learning something.

Yes, we finally have learned something about Jessica and what she is! 🎊🎉 It only took the better part of four books. Even now, we only know a portion of it. Though, we do know for certain others know what she is (not just guessing and being scared of her), and no one told her. Basically, though... Trust absolutely nothing you have learned or will learn because none of it will stick because everything changes all the time in this series.

I'm getting quite annoyed with Jessica being kept in the dark about everything, though. No one tells her anything, she stumbles into something she shouldn't have, she fucks things up or ends up in danger. Every time, about everything. She always learns about things at the last second. In infodumps. In a "muhahaha" fashion.

Once again, the coincidence levels are off the charts. Jessica even acknowledges it. This quote about says it all:

"So what you're telling me is, I stumbled into the only cell in all the Underworld that holds the only prisoner who will be able to keep me safe?

That quote basically sums up the series.

But, it isn't just coincidence that I have a problem in right now. Fate. Fate is my problem. I don't trust a lot of authors to play around with fate, too often it ends up being "because the author said so", not actually fate. Amanda Carlson is not one of the authors I want to be playing around in fate. Especially since the lines "This wasn't supposed to happen yet! It was supposed to happen 100 years from now!" (paraphrased) appare a few times. Hmm..

Also, why are there clones? Why would anyone think that is a good idea? "Oh, I need two of this character to appear, I know, I'll add clones!" What? What what? Why? Why would you do that? THERE IS MAGIC WHY WOULD YOU ADD CLONES?! There are like at least a dozen better ideas I can think of using magic. Including making up whatever the fuck you want, it is magic!

There are also a few other sins this series likes to commit, that is driven home especially well in this book. There is the obligatory "Let's have sex while in the middle of being in danger!" scene in a lot of books, to varying degrees. Sometimes it is thinking about sex, sometimes it is forcing yourself to not jump someone. Or, it is actively forcing yourself to stop from having sex. Then, this series also has the obligatory "passing out in the middle of danger" scene. It keeps happening, where she ends up passed out while fighting or in danger or if she gets hit with anything.

Jessica is super powerful, a werewolf, and has basically any power the author needs her to have in the moment (that is actually written into her superpower - the ability to have any magic used on her). Yet, she rarely uses her powers, she uses them to bully instead. She talks her way out of everything, except healing herself and others. And even then she tries. She never changes to her wolf - in four books she has been in wolf form three times. That, too, is getting a bit frustrating.

I'm hoping for more from this series before the end, now we're getting to the penultimate book.

Jessica is forced to make the journey to hell after her brother is kidnapped by the Prince of Hell. With a little help from the witches and her very unusual pack, this is set to be the biggest challenge of her young lycan life. Can Jessica manage to get in and out of hell undetected and save her brother, without being forced to answer for the trumped charges which have been placed against her by the Prince?

Red Blooded is the fourth novel in the Jessica McClain series and by now, Carlson has clearly fallen into a very recognizable pattern. Trouble appears on the horizon and Jessica rushes in head first without much a plan, backed up by the unusual pack she has gathered around her. Tension ensues and Jessica pulls some woo woo out of her ass, masters it and defeats the big bad. The rest of the book is then used to set up the next story. It's as though Carlson is writing by rote at this this point. There is so little variation that at times, it's hard to get excited about the story. Yes, the protagonist is not going to die because she has plot immunity but the story should not play out the same way each time regardless of who the antagonist is.

Shortly after arriving in hell, Jessica meats a demon named Lilly, who is the former mistress of the Prince of Hell. Stop and think about that for a moment.; the demon's name is Lilly. We get this long drawn out drama before it is finally revealed that the demon in question is the daughter of Lilith. How this could have come as a big surprise to Jessica is absolutely beyond me and yet I am supposed to believe that she is an intelligent young woman. Lilly practically had a neon sign on her head which said don't trust me, yet Jessica kept coming up with reasons to justify doing so. Lilly is of course defeated in what has become the typical fashion in this series - Jessica gains new powers. Jessica is after all the chosen one right?

Red Blooded could very well have been called the gangs all here. Carlson brought back Selene, a character which should have stayed dead, briefly re-introduced Juanita the sole character of colour to date and of course included all of the characters in her weird pack once again. Red Blooded isn't a reboot of the series but really but more than any book thus far, it really felt repetitive because Carlson relies on the same bag of tricks that she has been employing since the first book in this series. I get it, Jessica is super duper special but the character needs to grow and evolve. For that matter, since Jessica is supposed to be a werewolf, how about we have her shift every once and awhile instead of having internal conversations with her wolf?

Though Jessica is fighting the forces of hell and her actual werewolf pack is in mortal danger, Carlson still manages to allow for Rourke and Jessica to have sexy times. Hello. People are tying to kill you, now is not the time to have sex. It's a common trope in urban fantasy but that doesn't make it any less irritating each time it pops up in a story. In terms of gender, it certainly is subversive to have Rourke always follow Jessica's lead. Carlson however has to claim that it is because Rourke's beast cannot stand to be separated from Jessica even for a few moments. The problem is that Rourke is the older and more experienced supernatural. Rourke is clearly more sensible than Jessica, so some woo woo reason had to be created to explain why it is that Jessica is the one taking the lead all of the time.
