Navigate the competitive work landscape, redefine your approach to ambition, and reclaim your rhythm beyond burnout
In a culture that values productivity as a sign of success, many professionals are on the verge of burnout, pushed—sometimes unconsciously and other times overtly—to keep working, keep producing, and keep reaching new heights at an unsustainable pace, often at the expense of their physical and mental wellbeing. In The Rest Revolution, executive and personal branding coach Amanda Miller Littlejohn shows readers how to restore themselves after burnout, and navigate the rigors of competitive work without sacrificing self.
Inspired by Littlejohn's experience as an executive coach to high achievers, The Rest Revolution explores topics such
The modern causes of exhaustion How personal achievement, social conditioning, and systemic barriers pose threats to rest How high achievers can take their overworking tendencies off autopilot How to use self-discovery to create your personalized plan to combat burnout Balancing achievement with self-care and wellness How perfectionism and imposter syndrome create a fertile ground for exhaustion 5 Rules of Rest - how to reclaim your time, mind, ambition, and more How high achievers are breaking the burnout cycle with a rest framework derived from nature Creative, prescriptive, and insightful with everything you need to reshape your approach to work and rest, The Rest Revolution is a deep dive into the causes of burnout, and an essential read for everyone looking to rise above workaholism while still achieving great heights in work, business, and life.
The Rest Revolution by Amanda ML aims to help readers identify and overcome the "machine mindset" that often leads to burnout. Through real-life examples and a framework called "Purposescaping," the author guides readers in understanding their core values, identifying their true purpose, and realigning their work to create a more fulfilling and sustainable career.
The book effectively utilizes real-life stories of individuals who have successfully navigated burnout, providing relatable and inspiring accounts. The "Purposescaping" framework is presented clearly and offers a practical roadmap for readers.
However, the book occasionally deviates from its core message, delving into topics like career planning and task management that seem tangential. Additionally, the frequent repetition of personal stories from a limited number of individuals can feel repetitive and disrupt the flow.
Despite these minor drawbacks, The Rest Revolution offers valuable insights into the root causes of burnout. It provides a helpful framework for readers to reclaim their well-being and find greater fulfillment in their work.
A good book that helps you to learn how to surf your professional life, using purpose scaping.
👀 How this book changed my daily live (Takeaways)
Exhaustion and burn-out are caused by what we do but also fed by what we do not do. Deferred dreams eat away at you.
⁉ Spoiler Alerts (Highlights)
Purpose Scaping: is like crop rotation in agriculture. Detect your next season: 1. Coasting: Not innovating, due to sunken in cost and time 2. No Curiosity: no questions because you feel that there’s nothing new to learn 3. Unimpressed: You’re doing what you can do, but not what you were born to do 4. Boredom: You’re bored because you’ve outgrown an old version of yourself. Anxiety: You’re scared to answer the call because you’re low-key afraid of your own power.
Close to half way through and the main argument is that you do need to rest and not how to rest... so I'm going to set this aside as this isn't the book for me.
