One very good reason to purchase this book is that it is one of a very few books on Maliki jurisprudence in English. I have even tried French and even in that language there is a pitiful lack of translated works. Its quite difficult to explain the reason for this as granted the Hanafi school had the benefit of 1. A large body of English speaking scholars who were more than willing to translate books into English and 2.British scholars who either had some interest in Islam or wished to have traditional books of jurisprudence in English to better understand and work with British Muslim subjects during the colonial era. It would appear that the same cannot be said for the French speaking world that in spite of having the benefit of centers of Islamic learning in Tunis and Fez had a remarkable lack of interest in the religion of a large body of the French speaking world. This book covers the important aspects of Islamic understanding, jurisprudence, faith and Sufism. The book is very well written and has plenty of notes to help with understanding the text. There is also an Arabic text at the end of the book an excellent index and a short biography of the author. All in all a well put together book and highly recommended.
This is a must-have book for the English-speaking follower of the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence. The book is a commentary of Ibn 'Ashir's famous Maliki primer al-Murshid al-Mu'in. The author of this commentary is Shaykh Ali Laraki, who grew up between Morocco and Spain. Of the Maliki books available in English it is one of the best and it is especially suited for people who don't have easy access to a teacher as it goes into great detail with the explanation.
