This new edition has been updated to provide an insight into the making, implementation, and consequences of Pakistan's foreign policy from Partition to post-9/11 years. It will facilitate a deeper understanding of the strategic compulsions that have driven decision-making in Pakistan's national security and foreign policy. This concise history will be of interest to readers seeking to form an objective perspective on Pakistan's foreign policy.
A much-needed read for all Pakistanis, that is for sure. The Foreign policy of Pakistan is like a web: so many threads. Some leading to some places, some just dangling in the air going nowhere. Abdul Sattar tried to make sense of it and somewhat succeeded. This is a book that presents a side of Pakistan's foreign policy that gets lots of criticism and he came up with information that has to be presented to explain why Pakistan made the choices that she made. Kudos to him for making some sense out of it and still managing to bring a positive side of it. I am much glad for this book.
Do read it if you have an interest in the foreign policy of Pakistan.
Abdul sattar was twice Pakistan‘s foreign Minister from July to October 1993 and from 1999 to 2002. He was foreign secretary from1986 to 1988 and also Pakistan‘s Ambassador to India. He also served as Ambassador to the USSR and as a permanent representative to IAEA in Vienna. The book is about a brief history of Pakistan's Foreign policy toward world powers: USA, USSR, CHINA. The relations with its neighboring country INDIA, Muslim states and other internatioal community. It is about pakistan's decison in making foreign policy and to maintain its status in world.
a recommended read. it makes feel positive and independent about Pakistan's foreign policy, in a very rational and reasonable manner. Focused primarily upon historical accounts, the triumphs and the international challenges faced by Pakistan, the author gives the reader a way forward ingrained in cautious optimism. Indeed a par excellence read written by an even brillant diplomat.
The book is recapitulation of history of Pakistan for the most part. Still, some interesting revelations have been made regarding some difficult decisions the country took over time. So, reading the book will pay you in the end.
