THE ADVENTURE BEGINS as young Sir Rolland enrolls in the secret Dragon Slayers Academy in his quest to become a Knight of Light.
In this first chronicle, Sir Rolland comes to discover what a real dragon is, and he is badly wounded by the first and deadliest of all dragons. With the help of his guild master and a legendary Lady of Grace, he must find healing and learn the weapon and armor needed to obtain the greatest and only real power to slay a dragon.
I loved this book. There is a series of seven books, each one tackling one of the Seven Deadly Sins. The book series is written for children ages seven and up. I am pretty sure it was also written for adults, or at least for me. The story is creative and holds even this old lady's attention.
Young Sir Rolland is enrolled in secret to the Woodshire Academy of Dragon Slaying. The goal is to become a Knight of light.
There is a very clear explanation of this sin of all sins, Pride. However, it comes about through the journey Rolland takes in his regular studies. As someone who of course struggles with Pride, I loved the reminder of what this sin is all about.
This book is solid Catholic which for me, makes it even more beautiful, but I think any follower of the Lord will enjoy it. I will admit it brought a tear to my eye, now and then.
I just bought the first book to test it out. Now I will have to get the rest.
I love that this book in rooted in Catholic teaching with the intention of helping kids understand the 7 deadly sins and reliance on God.
My struggle was that I had a hard time reconciling the reading level of the book (I'd say 5th grade), with the 2nd grade main character. I also would have liked a little more of Rolland's day to day life to keep the plot moving a bit.
Excellent story to read as preparation for the sacraments of reconciliation and first Eucharist. Abstract concepts of sin and forgiveness are explained through the analogy of dragon wounds that are healed, making them more understandable and approachable for children.
