Sunkissed Summer

Her Runaway Vacay

Rate this book
Sometimes even the most responsible and sensible of girls needs a vacation...

I had big summer plans... none of which included Hawaii. I was going to garden. I was going to paint my fence. I was going to purchase a hamster.
Hawaii was never the plan.

When my weasel ex tried to steal our vacation tickets for himself and his new girlfriend, it just happened.

So, I'm in Hawaii. On vacation. Sure, I've got expectations...

I expect reading on the beach. I expect mocktails by the pool. I expect a week of twiddling my thumbs and organizing my photos app.

I did not expect Kal.

Somehow my new Samoan god-like acquaintance convinces me to spend my week exploring, to spend it spontaneous, to spend it adventuring.

To spend it with him.

No, Kal was something I never expected, neither was falling in love.

Her Runaway Vacay is part of the Sunkissed Summer Novellas, a multi-author series about six former college roommates. They've gone their separate ways but love is going to find them all in the exact same summer!

Oh my heck! Her Runaway Vacay is such a cute, fun summer story! The teacher in me LOVED that both Meg and Kal are teachers! And everything in me loved that this story took place in Hawaii.

I loved Meg getting out of her comfort zone and becoming more spontaneous, when her first inclination is to be sensible. She had some fun and funny experiences and survived them all!

I loved her meet cute with Kal, his island charm, his adorable Tina, and how he helped Meg get out of her comfort zone. It was perfect how he was able to show her how she can be both sensible and spontaneous and that they could both love every side of her!

Such a cute and fun summer novella!!

This was a cute summer novella! Definitely perfect for a poolside read. This is a dual pov, clean romance. It is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand alone novel.

I love this story and read it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Meg and Kal are complete opposites but I absolutely love these two together. I also enjoyed having Kal’s mom having a place in the story. While we didn’t see her often I felt like her character was super impactful to both Meg and Kal. The ending had me laughing so hard at Kal’s antics and I thought he hatred of pants was hilarious throughout the story.

This is such a fun quick read! Loved the tension between spontaneous Meg and sensible Meg throughout, as well as the chemistry between Meg and Kal! A great summer beach read. Glad I could read and review a little early. Check this fun sweet series of standalones out ASAP!

Oh Meg! Oh Kal! What fun characters! I could feel Meg in my soul!

Meg is a kindergarten teacher that is very straight laced. Very not spontaneous. But when her ex tries to get her to give up some tickets to Hawaii that she bought...she ends up taking the trip herself...alone. (with encouragement from friends)

Problem is that she's not much of a vacationer.

Thankfully she meets Kal, a local online English teacher who helps her lean into spontaneity...and maybe helps her open her heart up a but along the way.

Such a fun story! I couldn't put it down! (Well, I had to to take care of kids but I did read it in a few hours split up. 😅) A great sweet summer read!

(I received a free copy in return for my opinion.)

This book is part of a multi-author series but can be read as a standalone. I absolutely adore this book and it super quick read. It took me one day and I am so hoping for more from the characters in Hawaii and Love, Wyoming. Meg is a kindergarten teacher in Love, Wyoming where she moved for her boyfriend who she found out was cheating on her. Meg decides to take the Hawaii vacation she was supposed to with her ex boyfriend on her own. While she is there she meets a local named Kal. Meg decides to go against her instincts and trust this stranger to show her around Hawaii in exchange for going to a family event with him. These two have so much fun together and quickly develop feelings. Only problem is Meg is on vacation and has to go back to her real life. Will this be goodbye or will they find a way to make it work?

This book, this entire series (A Sunkissed Summer) is just the perfect summer (or anytime!) read for the hopeless romantic, happily ever after, or rom-com reader. They are all novellas- just perfect for an afternoon of reading. And you won’t be able to put it down, so truly an afternoon.

Meg is an organized, efficient, rule following kindergarten teacher. She loves spread sheets- color coded. She also broke up with a cheating boyfriend who she had moved to Wyoming to be near. She had paid for a trip to paradise for them, but instead of letting him go with his new girlfriend- she does a rare spontaneous thing, and goes herself. Alone.

Kalani is an island boy through and through. He has never left his island, and never plans to. He teaches English- online, from his favorite spot, the beach. He loves his momma, surfing, and his aloha lifestyle. He also hates wearing pants.

Their initial meeting is hilarious, and as only Jen Atkinson can do- makes you fall in love with the characters and transports you to Hawaii. You feel the island love, the family closeness, the luau aloha, and the chemistry between the two opposites. She agrees to be spontaneous Meg just for the week- and enjoys every minute. Kal is a great tour guide and enjoys showing her his home. But at the end of the week, what will happen?

“I’m running away—from everyone who never believed I’d come, from the heartbreak that Kyle caused.”

“You’ll never find a wife if you can’t even wash your own pants!”

“The girl may be beautiful, but she’s like one of those stress balls—filled with too much goo and ready to pop.”

“I have no idea how to vacation. I came to Hawaii ready to organize my photo app…”

“Yes, my night had turned into If You Give a Pig a Pancake. And I am most definitely the pig.”

“My personal bubble has popped. I am officially invading his bubble. I’m breathing coconut while drowning in musk and a pool of coffee-brown eyes.”

“She looked as though Hawaii, itself, had claimed her.”

“It’s choosing to be spontaneous and choosing to like it. My adrenaline doesn’t just pump, it comes to life, a new, vacation-filled life.”

Okay- I’ll stop with the quotes, but you get the idea. It’s so fun, so sweet, and just full of love. For family, for friends, your home, and for each other.

Meg is a kindergarten teacher who thrives on keeping her life organized and keeping to her plans. Except for the trip to Hawaii that was planned with her ex-boyfriend, going alone was not what she wanted.

After some events, Meg decides that her trip needs to happen even if it’s out of character.

By sheer luck, Kal happens to overhear Meg’s conversation about being in Hawaii and her minimal plans. Kal convinces Meg to be spontaneous for her time and try a bunch of activities outside of her comfort zone.

What neither of them planned was how deep they could fall for each other. Meg can’t stay and Kal doesn’t ever want to leave.

This was such a cute story!! I loved the chemistry. I also how they learned to overcome their own hurdles while staying true to themselves.

The Perfect Summer Novella!

Jen Atkinson is an auto buy author and this novella just proves yet again why!

She creates the best, quirkiest and lovable characters! She gives you the best kisses and storylines that just make you turn page after page!

Kal was the sweetest MC and I loved his banter with Meg! I loved that they both brought out the sunshine in each other and helped each other face the unknown.

I loved Meg and her journey through this novella. I loved the theme that it’s okay to embrace who we are but also try new things and step into the unknown.

If you want a quick perfect summer read this is the one for you! It will make you laugh out loud, swoon and just pull on your heart strings!

Her Runaway Vacay tomorrow (June 27th)!! (Available on KU)

Something about Jen's writing just always pulls me in! This novella is no different!

I related to Meg in a lot of ways (over preparer much?) and stepping out of my comfort zone is something that just doesn't happen. I loved the mantra that Kal created "spontaneous Meg" to help her enjoy her Hawaiian vacation.

This was the perfect read this week as it's hitting 100 degrees (and feels like 105-108) where I live pretending I was at the beach.

I wish this was a full length novel and we got to see more of their adventures, but it was very well written and had enough depth for being a shorter book.

Favorite moments:
Dancing on the patio & drunk Meg
Mishap at the wedding
Spontaneous Meg
Ziplining
Luau
First kiss
Alana!! Bringing in the mom wisdom and she had the best lines!!
The grand gesture

This novella….it’s absolutely the cutest book! All the Summer goodness I needed in one short and sweet package! This book was flirty, fun, and addictive! Meg and Kal were so adorable!!!

Meg is a rule-follower teacher who doesn’t know how so let loose and have fun. After a breakup with her boyfriend, she takes a trip to Hawaii to prove to her family and herself that she can be spontaneous and have fun.

When she meets up with Kal (their meet-cute.. y’all is the cutest), she intrigues him and he’s bound and determined to show her how to let her hair down and enjoy all the goodness Hawaii has to offer.

Meg was so much fun to read! I loved her transformation from Sensible Meg to Spontaneous Meg. She found herself in some pickles that had me laughing so hard, but she was a trooper through it all! She definitely got out of her comfort zone a few times! 😂

Kal was every girl’s dream. And did he knew how to charm! He drew that fun part out of Meg and let it shine. Their chemistry was on fire and those kisses….🔥🔥🔥! Their little adventures were fun and had me giggling so much!

But most of all I loved how Kal shown Meg he loved both Sensible and Spontaneous Meg. She didn’t need to change for him to love her, he cherished every part of her. It was precious.

If you’re looking for a cute and fun Summer novella that you can finish in a day, then this right here is your book!!

Things I Loved:

Her Runaway Vacay was super cute! I really liked it! It's the perfect summertime novella for the beach or the pool. I enjoyed it so much, I wanted more, but I know it's suppose to be a novella haha.

Meg is a Kindergarten teacher, who lives life by planning and rules. When summer break comes around, her awful ex-boyfriend tries to convince her to give him and his new girlfriend tickets to Hawaii-- That Meg bought for them while they were a couple.

Deciding to stick it to her ex, Meg takes the trip, alone, to Hawaii. There she meets Kal, a local. Can Kal convince Meg to live life on the edge, spontaneously? Read it and find out!

I loved Meg and Kal. The book had me laughing out loud and wanting more of the two of them. Meg and Kal are very different with Kal being a no-pants type of guy who would prefer to be on the beach all day. They're just adorable! For a novella, the character growth of Meg was great for me. And who doesn't love a hunky Samoan?

her runaway vacay - jen atkinson

💕 від незнайомців до коханців;
💕 літня відпустка;
💕 протилежності притягуються;
💕 closed door.

3/5

This sweet summer novella was just what I needed! While there might have been an abundance of kissing, like Meg, I’m certainly not complaining. 😏

Meg and Kal are an adorbs, fun pair whose opposites-attract dynamic leads to plenty of hilarious moments that I couldn’t get enough of. 🔥

Kal, the irresistibly charming Hawaiian local, is always ready for an adventure and knows how to make it happen. He quickly falls for Meg and proves to be a caring and attentive partner. 🥰

Meg’s character growth was delightful to witness. Her vacation, stepping out of her comfort zone, and ultimately finding herself in Kal’s arms made for a heartwarming read. 🥹

“For one week, I get to live the pantless, beachy life that belongs to Kalani Jex.”

Meg is quite sensible and does the unexpected by going on a couples trip that she paid for…alone. I couldn’t stop squirming, snickering, and swooning throughout this perfectly paced romcom. Her immediate run-in with local, Kal, amped up her previously planned trip and turned it into an unforgettable experience, especially as “Sensible Meg” morphed into “Spontaneous Meg” and it was wonderful to watch her let go and live.

I love Hawaii and although I haven’t visited Lanai, I could picture the zipline, hula lessons, and beach time. This story is the vacay I didn’t know I needed and from the fantastic cast of characters, to the vivid setting, to the character growth, to the swoony chemistry, I was all in.

The Sunkissed Summer novellas are the perfect snippets to sip the summer days away with and I loved every page.

“Spontaneous Meg,” he whispers as if he were my mantra come to life. And for some reason, I let him be my mantra. I listen even. “Okay,” I say, then mouth to myself, “I am Spontaneous Meg.”

🙌🏻📚•If you’re looking for a delightful and fun Summer novella that you can absolutely finish in a day, or in a couple hours, then this book is just right for you! ✔️☺️

Meg is a sensible routine rule-follower teacher who doesn’t know exactly how to let loose and have fun. After her ex boyfriend bugs her about her giving them some airplane tickets, she bravely takes a trip to Hawaii to prove to her family and herself that she can be spontaneous, get away, and have fun. When she meets up with Kal, he is intrigued and he’s bound and determined to show her how to let her hair down and enjoy all the goodness Hawaii has to offer while she is there…

“I am free. It’s being here, doing this. It’s choosing to be spontaneous and choosing to like it. My adrenaline doesn’t just pump, it comes to life, a new, vacation-filled life. Spontaneous Meg has arrived.”

@authorjenatkinson oh what a delightful novella that’s packed with such fun and goodness!☀️This story had me smiling, giggling, and swooning on every page. There is such charisma, charm, character growth, sizzling sparks of chemistry, and great adventure inside! But, I must say that what I loved most was how both Meg and Karl bring out the best in each other. I love how Kal truly loves Meg, for the real person that she is and treats her as such. It wonderfully encompasses what love is all about! This is a lovely summer story worth reading! Go be spontaneous and read it sooner than later!🩷📚🙌🏻

“Some may say we’re opposites, but I say we’re complements. You complement me. I complement you.
Most of all, Meg, I want you. All of you. Sensible and spontaneous. Pants and all. The real you.”

“Why me, Kal?”
He adjusts his hold on my back and peers down at me, sweet mint from his warm breath mixing with the coconut that sems to follow him wherever he goes. “Why not? My mother didn’t want me showing up alone, again. And…”
“And what?”
“I saw you dancing,” he says.

My cheeks are suddenly scorching. I turn an inch away from him, my temple brushing the bristle of his beard again. But he doesn’t loosen his hold on me.

His lips are warm at my ear. He whispers, only for me, “And I knew that deep down inside of you, and despite what you say, you are a dancer. You have Hawaii in you, it just needed to find a way out.”

*Sigh*

Her Runaway Vacay is the dream summer novella! Kal and Meg…
She is predictable and reliable (her sock drawer is a masterpiece)
He is free and fun (his aversion to pants!)
Together they make my heart swoon (their MEET CUTE!!)
Autumn (the friend we all need to take away the ratty swimsuit)
Tina (iykyk)
Hawaii (need I say more????)
The Ending!!!!

This is book 4 out of 6 in the Sunkissed Summer Novella series but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this book and just maybe you will find yourself like Spontaneous Meg did…

CW: Closed door, kisses only. Social drinking, mentions of a past cheating boyfriend and mentions of a past event where the father left his family and moved away

“Being spontaneous with you was the best time I’ve ever had. But I don’t want to change who I am. Not forever. Not for anyone. I like me.”

Whether the story is short or long, Jen always creates the most wonderful characters and stories! She’s worked her magic again in Her Runaway Vacay. It may be a novella, but it’s still packed with so much fun, tenderness, and swoony romance.

Meg doesn’t have anything too exciting planned for her summer break. She definitely didn’t plan on a trip to Hawaii. But that all changed when her cheating ex boyfriend tried to persuade her to give him the vacation tickets to Hawaii she bought, to use for himself and his new girlfriend.

So off she goes, expecting a quiet time reading on the beach, and organizing her photos app.

She certainly did not expect to meet someone like Kal. The gorgeous, laid-back local who convinces her to spend her week exploring the island, and living spontaneously.

Another thing she didn’t expect to do? Fall in love.

What I loved:
🏝️ Opposites attract
🏝️ Vacation romance
🏝️ MCs are both teachers
🏝️ Dual POV
🏝️ Ziplining and Hula lessons
🏝️ No-pants lifestyle
🏝️ Kai’s mom

Meg and Kal fall for each other pretty quickly, but it comes across as sweet and believable. I loved both of them!

I loved the descriptions of the island. The magic and beauty of Hawaii really comes across in this lovely story.

I adored how ‘invisible Meg’ became ‘seen Meg’ and how she grew to love herself just the way she was.

If you’re looking for a quick, heartwarming, adorable, romantic summer read, this is a perfect choice!

Many thanks to the author for an ARC!

I absolutely adored this novella (number 4/6) in the Sunkissed Summer Novella series. This series is about 6 former college roommates, the “Sunny Girls” (Brooke, Chloe, Ava, Meg, Sadie, and Maggie), who lived together in an old house in Colorado. These novellas tell each girls’ story about how they find love one summer.
Her Runaway Vacay tells Meg’s story. Meg and Kal (MMC), are both teachers but they live in seriously different words. They meet each other when Meg decides to shock everyone in her life and go on a solo vacay that was meant for her and her cheating ex-boyfriend. She wants to prove everyone wrong for once and show them she knows how to live life to the fullest. But… does she even know how to relax properly enough to enjoy vacation? Does she even know how to have fun?
After some interesting interactions… Meg proposes that Kal become her tour guide for the week and show her what Hawaii and having fun is all about! Little do they both know what a random, spontaneous week has in store for them… “As long as we’re breaking the rules, we might as well break them all, right?”
I highly recommend reading this novella to find out what happens! I cannot wait to read the rest of the novellas in this series!

I’ve never been disappointed with a @authorjenatkinson book! This was another sweet story in the Sunkissed Summer Novella series! I loved getting to know Meg and Spontaneous Meg too! And Kal is just a dreamy dream boat Hawaiian. Love them both together! Kal’s mom is a hoot too! She’ll make you laugh for sure. Meg goes on a spontaneous trip and meets Kal… that meet cute is hilarious…. especially part 2 of that meet cute. That’s what I’m calling it cause they see each other twice in the same night. Thank you Jen for an arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own. There is mention of alcohol and being tipsy.

Looking for the perfect poolside summer read?! Her Runaway Vacay is such a sweet rom-com novella that is just what you need for a “me time” relaxing read! Hawaii. Exploring. Laughter. A sweet meet-cute. Opposites attract. Dual POV. The perfect sweet boyfriend who sees it all and cares deeply (and hates pants!). This novella has it all.
Jen always delivers, and this novella was a great addition to my shelf! I see myself in Meg in many ways. It’s hard to get herself out of her comfort zone and she is sure she needs structure and to remain sensible. Taking a vacation?! No way!
Kal is perfectly happy teaching from the beach and never having to leave the island or wear long pants!
One overheard conversation just may be the key to them both realizing what they really need to be happy…and it may not be what they think!
I enjoyed traveling with Kal and Meg through Hawaii and laughing and swooning as their connection and chemistry built. Jen writes in such a way that elicits your emotions and makes you feel like you are part of their friend group. I laughed. I cried. I hoped.
Every time I pick up a book written by Jen, I have a smile on my face from the very first page. You can depend on her to deliver what your HEA romcom hearts needs and wants. Buckle up and enjoy Kal and Meg!

This was such a cute novella. If you’re looking for a cute summer read you can finish in a day then make sure to pick this one up.

This story follows Meghan. Meg leads a very predictable life. She teaches kindergarten and fills her extra time around her house. When her cheating ex-boyfriend approaches her to ask her for the Hawaii trip they had planned together she says no just to spite him and his new girlfriend. Reluctantly, she goes to Hawaii alone expecting to read and organize her phone apps. Instead she meets Kal and finds her spontaneous side.

I was so excited to hear Jen was putting out a summer novella and I loved every bit of this story. The dynamic between Meg and Kal was perfect. These two are total opposites in every way but they teach each other it can be enjoyable to step outside their comfort zones.

The relationship Kal has with his mother was so sweet. I love stories with strong familial bonds and that can be found in this book.

This story is part of the “Sunkissed Summer Novella” series and it’s a great mental escape from the reality of the scorching Arizona heat I’m experiencing!  I think we can all relate even if not personally to being torn between two different ways of going about life and that made this novella special!

The opening of this book starts unlike any other I have ever read, “CHUCK IS DEAD.”  Well, that’s not awkward to think about until you realize that he was a hamster. Try to contain your laughter if you dare!  As you continue to read, Meg Miller, kindergarten teacher extraordinaire decides to go ahead with the trip to Hawaii, that she initially planned to take with Kyle!  Too bad Kyle turned out to be a hunk of junk, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t go on her own, except that’s not how she’s wired, pushing forward ends up being one of the best decisions she ever makes!

Kal Jex is your typical island guy, who has no plans on leaving or ever wearing pants (he wears shorts don’t worry)!  But his inside connections to one of the best beaches on the island, along with a twist of fate, causes their paths to cross!  He offers to show her the island – best vacation of her life, if she will go with him to a family wedding!  She initially refuses, but then relents and the adventure that awaits the two of them is one for the books!

I have been to Hawaii once, different island and more than half a lifetime ago, but this story makes you want to disappear for a while!  I found it funny, when Meg starts telling Kal about all the cool things he could experience in the continental US and how much you miss out when you stay where you’re at all the time!  The moral of this tale is, don’t be afraid to embrace spontaneity as opportunity won’t always come knocking!

Ahhh! Jen does it again! Sensible Meg turns into Spontaneous Meg when she goes on a vacation to Hawaii. No one thinks she’ll go. It’s a vacation she was supposed to go with her ex.

Meg doesn’t know how to vacation until she meets Kal, a local. Without wanting it to…sparks begin to fly.

I’m obsessed with this whole series! Can’t wait for the next…and Autumn’s story!

Beach vibes
Cutest meet cute

I love Jen Atkinson’s books and this novella is so adorable! A fun, quick read that you can binge in a day at the beach or pool!

Meg's summer plans included gardening and painting her fence, but when her ex boyfriend tries to steal the vacation tickets she paid for, she decides to be spontaneous for once and heads to Hawaii herself. What she didn't expect was Kal, a handsome local who wants to spend time with her and encourages her spontaneity further.

This was just the cutest summer read! I was smiling right from the beginning and didn’t stop until the very end! Meg is totally relatable to me with how sensible she is and how hard it was for her to be spontaneous. The moment she decides she wants to live life differently for the week and realize how alive it makes her feel was precious. Kal had a big hand in that with all the adventures he took her on; the luau, the midnight swim, and more. This is a novella but it wasn’t missing anything. It was packed full of romance, amazing flirty banter, and some of the swooniest kisses. There was character depth and growth. I just loved it all! I wasn’t quite sure how it would end but the ending was absolutely perfect! I loved that the novella takes place in Hawaii, where I spent my honeymoon 24 years ago. I was transported back there while reading. If you are looking for a quick and fun summer read then this should be on your TBR!
