I don't think I'll be fully reviewing this one lol. I'm desperately trying to pull myself out of this slump/funk and I just want to put the books that did nothing for me behind me.

With this one... and this might have just been my own misunderstanding. I thought this was going to be a more heartfelt and emotional read... I didn't anticipate the insta everything between the FMC and the MMC which is far from my favorite.

I never really felt connected to the characters. I didn't like the FMC at all. (Not super surprising but) she was try hard and - I didn't like her.

They all felt very very flat. It was heavy on the telling but no showing. I was happy to break free of the book and not have another DNF on my hands... but no major win there.

This is my first book from Jewel E. Ann - I am open to trying others and not letting this one bad experience be my deciding factor - any suggestions? I'm open.

The twist at the end wasn't needed at all. It felt forced and added for shock or emotion but I already didn't give a single fk about any of the characters.

Me: 'I don't think I'll write a full review on this one.' 🥴

Also me: 'Proceeds to complain through several paragraph review.' 🥴

Did someone say FIREFIGHTER romance?! 🔥👩‍🚒

Omg this was incredible!! This was easily up there with one of my favourite romance reads this year. I couldn't put it down and devoured this in one sitting.

"You're generous. Distractingly mesmerising. Quirky in a brilliant way. And ineffably beautiful.”

Everything delivered for me — the romance was full of angst and the chemistry between these two was undeniable. The writing was so engaging, I fell completely in love with these characters at the very beginning. Calvin and Jaymes had the best witty banter between them, I literally felt myself swooning. Oh, to be loved by Calvin!! I even had tears in my eyes by the end because they were so cute.

“Why did you kiss me? Because not kissing you became too exhausting.”

This story had the best found family which felt realistic. I laughed out loud so any times. The humour was a welcome reprieve and balanced some of the heavier themes. I can't wait to read Maren's book next - she's a real firecracker.

“I made you my person, and you don’t fit in my life, but my life no longer fits me without you.”

This is so much more than a romance novel - there's an added drama/mystery element that kept me in engaged. My jaw hit the floor at one point, I did not see the direction the second half of this book took. This cruel twist of fate delivered so much emotion and turmoil to the story. Grief is also a heavy theme in this book and I loved watching these characters I grew to love heal.

I'll definitely be continuing this series and checking out this author's other work. I'm so glad I stumbled across this gem because I went in completely blind. I 10/10 recommend this if you love an angsty romance!!

DNF @20%

I CAN’T read a single sentence of this book anymore, I normally don’t even add a book as “read” if I didn’t read more than the 60% of it but this one was so frustrating to read, it put me in the worst mood possible so I’m going to count it.

Hated the writing and the dialogue between all characters was so unrealistic and too forced in my opinion. Also didn’t like any of the characters. Anyway, I’m too stressed out with finals and too many research papers to do for me to be adding more suffering for a book, that is why I’m not even going to try to finish this.

ALSO TOO INSTA EVERYTHING, they just meet and already have a “banter” which actually was more like they being immature with the other with the whole revenge thing that was absurd. Didn’t really gave me any tension at all, wanted to take each other’s clothes off the exact second they met and idk I wasn’t feeling it.

Dnf’d at 60% 😭

I honestly wanted to love this, like i went to it blind only expecting to love it because i’ve seen a-lot of positive reviews but i just couldn’t and i think it’s a me problem 😭

💭 I couldn’t connect to the main characters or feel anything for them idk why but I literally couldn’t find it in me to care about them. It was so weird their banter and how they got so close to each-other all of a suddenly and kept talking and asking and making jokes about personal and sexual stuff!! It was so weird and also it was so insta lusty and insta love and insta everything. There was no build up or anything to their relationship so I didn’t understand where did the love came from 😭 and please the whole revenge thing? What was that even about? I was so confused because I didn’t understand the whole thing and it felt so childish and immature and maybe it’s okay from her part because she is still young but he was 35 😭 why would 35 year old guy act like that i don’t understand!

💭the side characters were my main problem and i think it’s also a me problem because it just pissed me off so much like the fmc is a nurse okay so in her first day in the hospital when she meets the dr. to introduce herself the dr. Told the fmc her family story and asked her if she’s a virgin?!!!!!! Like what? Is she even allowed to ask that? And also when the fmc and the mmc went to Miami to me the fmc best friend. The fmc best friend told the mmc everything about the fmc even the first time she got her period and it was the first time they met!!!! And the mmc and the fmc weren’t even together they went as roommates! It pissed me off so much because if my bestie did that to me I’d literally kill her.

💭 the plot and the banter was sexual most of the time and also unrealistic because I don’t think people are actually this open with one another when they first met.it through me off so bad because it really had potential for the author to build everything up between the side characters and the main characters but she didn’t and im just 🧍‍♀️

Anyway i yapped alot but this was not for me 😭 i hope it works for everyone else tho 🙏🏻🤍

“I made you my person, and you don’t fit in my life, but my life no longer fits me without you.”

A winner from Jewel E. Ann. What a beautiful love story.

I think what I loved most about this is that the story felt normal and real. Jamie (25), the fmc, is a travel nurse. Fitz (35), the mmc, is a smoke jumper. Just two regular people falling in love with *for the most part* real-life problems getting in the way.

Both of them are such GREAT characters. They had incredible banter, and their love for each other was SO convincing, I was so hurt for both of them, mainly Jamie.

That girl, I swear. I wouldn't know what to do if I was in Jamie's position, I definitely wouldn't be as strong. Loving someone who you knew could never go all in with you ... I would throw myself a pity party and curse at the universe for putting myself in that position. But not Jamie. She didn't even beg. It was hurting her, but she didn't know how to stop being in love with someone like Fitz.

And Fitz was an amazing mmc. He was honest, and he was really funny. He wasn't *that* grumpy, but he wasn't really a fan of people. Jamie was a very likable person, and ten years younger than him. Yet they fit like a puzzle piece.

I loved it when I could see why they would fall in love with each other.

This book was a real page-turner because I needed to find out if they would ever find a way to meet in the middle. Their problems were so real and valid that even I couldn't find a way out for them. It was one of those things where the love just HAD to be bigger than everything else.

“Jaymes, if I were normal, I’d love you enough. The problem is, I’m not normal, so I’d love you too much.”

I loved that all the cards were on the table from the beginning. Fitz made it clear what he could and could not do, and Jamie made it clear even though she wanted and wished she could fix him, she wouldn't do that for him. He needed to want to fix it himself. So no one was really leading anyone on, but boy did it still hurt.

The mystery and the twist at the end were incredible. It was heartbreaking and sad and frustrating and I loved every single second of it.

The epilogue got me SOBBING. Good to know that it's possible for the love between two people to be bigger than everything else. What a bittersweet conclusion to a very real love story.

“Jaymes isn’t the girl of my dreams. I never allowed myself that luxury. She’s the girl who has taught me how to dream.”

alexa play daylight (calvin’s version)

i want to preface this review by saying when i started this book i went in blind knowing nothing other than it was a firefighter romance. i sought out this arc because at an ungodly hour one night/morning i happened to stumble upon book 2 as a read now and thought “why the hell not!” lol once again not knowing what it was about aside from firefighter. this was also my first book of jewels so its very safe to say i did not go into these books thinking i was going to come out of it with a new all time favorite book or that i was going to want to kick myself in the shin for having waited so long to start one of her books however, i did 🥹

one of the most magical feelings while reading a book is knowing very early on that its going to be phenomenal and that youre going to fall hard and fast for it. this book was the most perfect blend of humor, found family, will they wont they, grief and healing. it is a beautiful strangers to best friends to lovers to “well what now?”, its a cruel right person, wrong time and the best way i can describe it is the lyrics from peter - “the goddess of timing once found us beguiling, she said she was trying, Peter, was she lying? my ribs get the feeling she did.” 😭😭 like girls prepare to HURT before jewel even THINKS about patching you all up.

i found myself kicking my feet and giggling the entire time until it just turned into puddles of tears upon tears, man i was so insanely unwell reading this and i am forever grateful i got to go bawl my eyes out like a baby in private bc the grief and emotions were SPICY and not in the fun way!!! 😭😂

“All I can do is blink. No one loves as big as Calvin Fitzgerald.”

this one out of context sentence pretty much sums up calvin as a person, he loves so big and so hard and due to his past traumas it scares the ever loving hell out of him causing him to lash out sometimes but then we have the sweet and gentle jamie who can tell that he’s nothing but all bark and no bite. she knows when to push and when to back down from her pursuit to get him out of his own head. their love story is beautiful, tragic and completely addictive from start to finish. to be loved is to be known and these two knew each other like the back of their hand seemingly from the moment they met.

one of the things i find really cool about this story is the jobs everyone holds, when i went in thinking this was most likely another small town firefighter romance the last thing i was expecting was calvin being a smoke jumper (it was insanely cool to learn a little bit about this job in the process of reading it), maren (roommate and books 2s fmc) was a tanker pilot - i mean how fucking cool and bad ass?!, jamie is a psychiatric nurse who while reading parts of her job i just couldnt help but hope that every patient who suffers from a mental illness has somebody like her in their corner.

i also really loved how this book didnt just take place in missoula, we hoped around all over the place and jamie really got to fulfill her wish of seeing more of the country before settling down, was it easy for her to do? god no but i really commend JEA for making sure that even though it was hard she didnt just settle for something that felt safe and she continued to go out of her comfort zone time and time again.

TLDR - this book is fucking beautiful and insanely well written and you’d be a fool not to give it a try 🤷🏼‍♀️

Traveling psychiatric nurse Jaymes Andrews takes a job in Montana and moves in with a group of firefighters. Soon she’s set her sights on the enigmatic Calvin Fitzgerald, a smoke jumper married to his job. What starts as playful teasing leads to more, as Jamie finds herself completely drawn to the tormented Fitz. As the two begin to grow close, despite a housemate rule against it, both will be faced with losing more than they realized they wanted.

Damn. If I could give this book all the stars, I would. From Air is perfect in every way. When I think romance, especially forbidden romance, this is exactly what I envision. While there is angst, there is also so much humor within the banter. There is deep emotion, but also the levity provided by a great group of friends that often try to steal the show (I cannot wait for their books as well).

“You’re an illusion...a distraction. I can’t stop looking at you. And I can’t stop navigating closer to you, even though I know you’re unreachable.”

Jamie and Fitz stole my heart from the start. Both complex, vivacious and lovable characters, I felt an immediate attachment to them and a rooting interest in their outcomes. I am such a fan of that line where enemies and friends intersect and the author walks that line perfectly. These two have instant chemistry that leaps off the page and could at times, set the page on fire. And yet, as their layers are pulled back, and the emotional vulnerability becomes apparent, you can feel the chemistry turn to love.

Will I be rereading this book? You know it. Will I anxiously await book number two in the series? Without a doubt. This book is easily a favorite of the year.

Read if you like:
firefighters
forbidden romance
age gap
grumpy x sunshine
opposites attract
found family,
forced proximity
the best banter

My first JEA book and I had a lot of issues with it🫠

At the start of the story, I loved how chaotic Calvin and Jamie were. From their first interaction, the chemistry was there. They were bickering and bantering and I was giggling and kicking my feet. However, I did feel that this dynamic kind of overpowered their romance during the middle portion of the book. They had a tendency to always resort to humour. It made it difficult for me to connect to them because of that. Everything just became one big joke and the characters came off as rather childish. They developed feelings pretty quickly too. I mean by the 30% mark they had already kissed and had sex a few chapters later. It was too fast imo. Suddenly, they kept saying they were each other’s person and I’m confused by how we got to this point so quickly. The push and pull between Jamie and Calvin also annoyed me so much.

But my biggest complaint was the twist at the end. It was unnecessary and it seemed like the author just wanted to give the characters more trauma to experience before they got their HEA. The whole situation made me realize that these two should not be together. I have no idea how someone can get over a situation like that and none of the characters were sympathizing with Calvin and seeings things from his perspective. They just wanted him to get back together with Maren. And then everything resolved in like one or two chapters?!?

I have seen a lot of positive reviews on this book and so I’m definitely in the minority on this. But yeah this was not for me…

“You kissed me, Fitz. Twice. Why did you kiss me?”
“Because not kissing you became too exhausting.”

I've been finding a lot of new favourite authors this year, and Jewel E. Ann is now among them. HOW IS THIS BOOK SO GOOD?? I knew instantly that I'd love it, and I just kept falling in love with it more and more with every page.

I couldn't stop smiling and giggling at Jamie and Fitz's banter, they were SO ADORABLE. I loved them together and their will-they-won't-they situation drove me crazy (in a good way).

Both of them were well-developed as characters, they felt like real people. The supporting characters were all amazing too, I'd love to have a Will, Maren and Melissa in my life.

I liked learning about different types of firefighters, and what it all is they do. Like jumping out of planes. So cool. I actually didn't even think about that, so I learned something new at my big age of 26, hah.

There was a mystery element to the story, but it doesn't come into play till later in the book. If you thought you were going to be on an emotional roller-coaster solely because of the romance, you'd be wrong. That mystery had so many twists and turns, I'm surprised this author doesn't write thrillers.

And the pain that came with it...oof. LISTEN, I WAS NOT READY, OKAY? From Air had me sitting there crying, even knowing it HAD TO have a happy ending, but I couldn't help it, I was reduced to a puddle of tears.

It's clear to me now that this author likes to draw every single emotion out of her readers, and I feel like I have to thank her for it. Yes, even the tears. There are literally some still forming in my eyes as I'm writing this, I was THAT affected by this story.

I was panicking during the last 4-6 percent of the book, because I had no idea how things would be wrapped up, if the story would have to continue in book two etc, but luckily everything ended well, and I'm left with lasting emotional damage, yay!

On a happier note, this book is dual PoV, and it's done brilliantly. I enjoyed being in both Jamie and Fitz's heads, getting to know them and seeing them fall in love with each other one step at a time. But if we're being honest, it was more like a big leap than a step, those two recognised one another as "their person" immediately and you can't convince me otherwise.

I can't wait for the next book in this series, I know it's going to be just as lovely as this one. I also need to go and read more of Jewel E. Ann's books ASAP.

*Thank you to the author, publishers and Valentine PR for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Opinion Breakdown
The Good: The premise, the banter, the connection (both my own and theirs to each other).

The Not-So-Good: The angst. I understood that he was traumatized, especially from his grandmother, but I didn't quite understand his drastic view on life.

The Bad: The ending. This greedy reader always wants more with her books!

Overall: This did what Ms. Jewel always does for me - she sucks me in, gets me invested enough to feel for her characters, gets me emotionally connected, and then leaves me in a little bit of disappointment in the ending. She'll still remain one of my go-to authors though. The first 3 out 4 typical reactions I get from her books are well worth the last one! I loved their banter, liked their unlikely friendship, and while I had predicted a good bit of the angst and struggled with the ending, I liked this read overall. Not enough to go on my favorites shelf (like one of her books, Look the Part, is on), but good enough to get a higher rating than the 3 star slump I've been in 😅

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Jamie and Fitz's story. After the loss of her mother, Jamie decides to spread her wings a little and take positions as a travel nurse. This new job has landed her in Montana with 3 new roommates. One roommate, Fitz, is a mysterious and grumpy older guy who instantly intrigues her. She can't help but get him to like her and as more time passes, they become each other's "person". There are some lines that are crossed, some huge secrets revealed, and some sexy times...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Jamie and Fitz's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.

H (Hero) rating: 4 stars. Fitz. I liked him. I appreciated how he (reluctantly) cared so deeply for the h.

h (heroine) rating: 4 stars. Jamie. I liked her. I appreciated how mature she was and how she handled herself and the H even though he was hard to handle at times.

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I shed some tears but never needed any tissues.

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends too abruptly but pretty much as expected from Ms. Jewel for me. I would call this a HFN ending, but I'm sure others would be fine calling this a HEA

Safety: This one should be Safe with exception for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences

(ARC provided by Valentine PR)

Jaymes Andrews loves her job as a travel nurse. She doesn’t like to be in one place for too long. Feeling the need for change she takes a temporary six month position at a psychiatric clinic in Montana. She leaves warm Miami to move to Missoula and live in a house with firefighters. Her new roommates are strangers who soon become friends. She can’t help being fascinated with the one that’s a broody loner. Calvin is socially awkward and often grouchy, but there’s something about him she’s drawn to. He’s part of an elite group of wildland firefighters called smoke jumpers. At times he’s emotionally exhausting, but they still enjoy pushing each other’s buttons. As they clash sparks ignite between them. As feelings grow secrets are revealed, and the truth threatens to destroy something special.

From Air by Jewel E. Ann is the first book in her all new Wildfire series. It’s a unique, age gap, tortured lead, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, roommates, enemies to lovers, forbidden romance about friendship, self discovery, healing and found family. It’s a beautiful love story full of humor, secrets, mystery, angst, amazing chemistry and fabulous banter. I absolutely adored Jamie & Fitz together, and can’t wait for more in this world. Every time I read a Jewel E. Ann book I’m transported to a new magical place that captivates me. I always think each story is my favorite, and then she writes another brilliant book I can’t quit thinking about. <333

I looove Jewel's books and have loved every one I've read this year, but unfortunately, this one was a miss for me. The heroine is a traveling nurse and moves in with three new roommates. She's 25 and is immediately intrigued by the broody 35-year-old roommate who is a smoke jumper. This premise sounded so good, but instead I felt like I was reading about a bunch of college roommates who just party together and don't really do anything else. The attraction between them was instantaneous, but it also felt insta-love and the depth to their emotions felt like it came out of nowhere when they barely knew each other.

I was so excited to read about a smoke jumper, but Fitz's profession was never actually on page, which disappointed me. I thought we'd have some danger involved there, but it just felt like a plot point to be the reason Fitz didn't want attachments and nothing more. And the twists and connections at the end almost felt too much? Like too convenient the way things lined up?

This was just a miss for me and I'm sad I didn't love it!

This story was out of this world. Absolutely addictive and beautiful. I was instantly hooked. Jaymes and Calvin aka Jamie and Fitz. These two delivered on every freaking level. Top tier banter and chemistry. I couldn’t get enough of them and them trying to make a relationship work but it’s definitely not easy.
JEA doesn’t make it easy on her characters or her readers and this is exactly why I enjoy her writing so much. I feel so much when I read her work and From Air was no exception. There’s some surprises along the way , duh is JEA and it only added more angst and tension to the story.
The side characters Will and Maren were amazing too and there’s so much more to them. From Air only scratched the surface and I can’t wait to read more in this series.
From Air is spectacular on every level. I can’t recommend this book enough. This couple is truly something special.

"From Air" –

🩵found family

THIS WAS SO TWISTY??????

I literally binged the audio in a few hours. I was so completely locked in. Fitz is the ultimate sad boy and I can fix him I swear!!!

jaymes is a traveling psychiatric nurse and she lands in missoula with three roommates. there’s one house rule: don’t sleep with your roommates. but jaymes and fitz can’t help themselves. they fall hard but everything possible keeps getting in their way. he’s a wild land firefighter and she’s a traveling nurse, and neither want to give up their dreams.

aside from the forbidden/forced proximity deliciousness, this book had so many layers and twists I did NOT see coming. I thought I was picking up a firefighter romance but it was so much more than that. THE ANGST absolutely destroyed me in the best way.

I loved watching him melt for jaymes.

what to expect
⟢ firefighter x nurse
⟢ roommates
⟢ forbidden
⟢ age gap
⟢ grumpy x sunshine

My rating: (5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spicy: (2) 🌶️🌶️

Tropes:
- traveling nurse & firefighter (smokejumper)
- grumpy & sunshine
- roommates to lovers
- forced proximity
- roommates
- age gap (he’s 35, she’s 25)
- friends with benefits
- found family
- open door
- dual POV

This was my first introduction to Jewel E. Ann’s books, and I believe it was a very successful experience. I enjoyed the humor, the chemistry between the characters, the dual POV, and the brilliant plot with a perfectly timed reveal of the main twist. I especially loved how I managed to predict what would happen next, but only “a moment” before the main character realized it. The description of the heroine’s first flight experience truly struck a chord, as it captured all the emotions I felt when I flew for the first time this year.

This story follows Jamie, a psychiatric nurse searching for her place in the world, and Calvin — a grumpy, mysterious smokejumper with a traumatic past. Whom fate brought together to heal their wounded hearts.

I recommend this book to everyone who loves Nora Roberts’ Chasing Fire, which also features smokejumpers, as well as to fans of the firefighter movie Only the Brave, based on true events.

I can’t wait to read the next books in the series about other characters.

This story follows Jamie, a travel nurse who moves to Montana for a six-month stint. Moving in with three firefighters, one of them quickly catches her eye. Calvin, better known as Fitz, is grumpy and 10 years older. He’s a closed book, and Jamie can’t help but poke the bear, trying to get him to open up. Despite Calvin’s reluctance to settle down or commit, Jamie finds herself falling hard. But what will it take to get Calvin to let her in?

Jewel has done it again! This is a beautifully complicated relationship, with one person giving their all to someone who just can’t. The tension and chemistry between Jamie and Calvin were fantastic. And don’t even get me started on the plot twist—I never saw it coming, it threw a major spanner in the works. The story was deeply emotional at times, especially when declarations of love were made but Calvin remained unmoved but wanted to give his all. I absolutely love Jewel’s writing—she grips and captivates me every time I pick up one of her books. Highly recommend this and the audiobook!

Jewel E Ann is one of those authors that never fails me.
Her writing is impeccable. Her characters are always quirky, or just a little different, which endears me to them. And her storytelling is unique and easily pulls you into any world she creates.

Jamie is a 25-year old travel nurse and she is leaving the only home she's ever known in Miami to head to the snowy state of Montana to live with 3 roommates. Those 3 roommates all work in the wildfire industry and welcome her with open arms. Well, 2 of them do and the other one is more closed off and kind of grumpy.

Fitz is a 35-year old firejumper and knowingly puts his life at risk each year fighting the wildfires. He is a tough nut to crack and no one truly knows who Calvin "Fitz" Fitzgerald is. But Jamie is intrigued by her grumpy, no nonsense roommate and makes it her mission to "fix" him. But what do you get when you mix grumpy-sunshine that have the best banter and electric chemistry? Well, when it comes to a JEA book, you get magic!

"You kissed me, Fitz. Twice. Why did you kiss me?"
"Because not kissing you became too exhausting."

I loved watching the roommates energy play out between Jamie and Fitz right from the start. They both liked pushing each others buttons and it was just pure fun. You couldn't help but have a smile on your face. But then you could feel that energy turn rather quickly into some forbidden chemistry. It was fire! And even then, watching them fight any and all attraction was just too darn entertaining. Fitz didn't want any connection because of a past and Jamie was a travel nurse so she didn't want to have ties to anywhere. But when an attraction turns into a connection and friendship like theirs, they really couldn't ignore what was right in front of them all along.

From Air was a beautiful story about finding your person and not giving up on them no matter what life or fate throws at you. I couldn't help but immediately fall in love with Jamie and soon after, the grumpy Fitz, because who doesn't like a sexy sarcastic firejumper? And the supporting characters were just as fun and entertaining. They really helped push the story forward. I completely devoured and loved the overall journey for Jamie and Fitz.

Overall, this was a total joy to read. The absolute best banter. Laugh out loud moments. Fun and sexy moments. Fall in love moments and of course, emotional moments. Because you can't have a JEA story without some sort of emotional pull. I can't wait for the next book in this world!

4,5 ⭐ What a wonderful, funny, and sad story! I think only Jewel E. Ann can combine drama and rom-com so masterfully. The banter in the book is awesome! I was giggling most of the time, but by the end, my heart was aching with emotions. I fell in love with these characters, especially Fitz. It was so interesting to watch him change and open his heart to love❤️‍🩹

I am all about a romance full of moments of coincidence that bring two people together. A love so meant to be that nothing can stop it.
Fate. Luck. Happenstance. Serendipitous destiny!

This. Was. Not. That.
Everything felt over the top and sooooo far fetched. I've heard great things about this author but this was just not it. 2 stars, and that feels generous.

I wanted to DNF this so bad but call me stubborn and tired cause I really didn't want to start 2025 with a DNF to add to the pile. The way this was a 1 star until the last 80 or so pages when a twist happens and the angst finally kicks in is the only reason I'm upping my rating. Otherwise? Dull as dirt. The insta-lust smacks you right in the face 20 pages in with no rhyme or reason. The heroine Jaymes aka Jamie (very confusing name for your heroine by the way) is all heart eyes and gaga for the "aloof" hero who barely gives her the time of day. She's immediately smitten and calling him "her person" and I didn't understand why? The hero Calvin is supposed to be a loner and brooding grump but all he did was grin and smirk and make sarcastic quips. It just wasn't my thing. Smug grumps are not my thing. Smirking and grinning was all we got from this guy as far as reactions. I didn't like or understand Jamie's hero worship of Calvin that happens 5 minutes after meeting him. The number of times this girl would say his full name like he's some demig-d was really annoying and felt juvenile. 'Omg Calvin Fitzgerald kissed me! Calvin Fitzgerald shoved his dick inside me! Calvin Fitzgerald is touching me. Calvin Fitzgerald did something nice for me'........was she afraid she would forget his government name? I swear if this guy sneezed on her she would orgasm and say 'thank you, do it again'. It was doing too much. The heroine keeps telling readers how Calvin is "so deep and intense" which I did not see at all. Which proves the more you have your characters tell readers something instead of actually showing it, the less convincing it is. I like my brooding jerk heroes to be a little more reactionary, with a little more maturity and nuance. This guy is just rude because he wants to be and so unserious and he thinks it's funny and it fell flat for me. The constant sarcasm and "fuck you's" to each other (during sex too) is not my kind of love language. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The premise of this was great and is what had me wanting to jump right in. The heroine Jaymes is a traveling nurse who wants to stretch her wings after living a sheltered life in Miami. The hero Calvin Fitzgerald is a smoke jumper who jumps out of planes to fight wildfires (didn't even know that was a thing? O_o). They meet when Jamie rents a room in a house with 3 roommates in Missoula where she lands a temp nursing job at a psychiatric hospital. The hero Calvin is one of the roommates. I went into this expecting an emotional angsty vulnerable read of two people slowly bonding instead it was Junior High fluff of giggling, flirting and acting like friends with benefits and making friendship promises and getting drunk together. Who goes day drinking hours before their best friend's family party and get so wasted they get matching tattoos and have sex in their friend's bed whose apartment they are staying in? To the point they nearly vomit in said bed? :< Suuuuper sleazy and immature. It really read like 2 teenagers hooking up instead of 2 grown adults falling in love. Considering she's already admitting she's in love with this guy 30% into the story, this was a problem for me. It was way too much too fast with very little effort put in to prove it. The angst and "intensity" (we keep being told about) was nonexistent until the 75% mark. I've read more emotionally constipated heroes with baggage who at least show they are fighting their feelings. We are just told things not shown it. I wanted more overall.

Also Calvin's fire jumping job? Left me completely at sea. The author barely gave it much thought or space on the page. She kept using firefighting lingo for procedures and tools that nobody would understand unless you are a smoke jumper. There's a difference between telling readers what your character does with big words you researched verses showing what they actually do. I have no idea what he was doing in those fire scenes because the world building is near nonexistent. I don't know what a "cup trench" is or what "checking lines" means when they jump out of a plane because the author doesn't bother explaining any of it to you. And that frustrated me because I wanted to see the action and what these guys do on a fire call. You picked this profession for your hero so at least explain it to your readers.
As soon as our break ends, we return to work, felling the burning snag, throwing dirt on it, and tearing it apart.

I mean what is a burning snag? And tearing what apart? She just throws sentences like this at you to explain a scene and then moves on. Drove me crazy. It definitely felt weird to be reading about wildfires with the horrible fires going on in my city right now and the immense devastation and loss families are experiencing.

The twist near the end (actually 2 twists) was shocking and juicy and finally made things interesting. The emotions and angst that I wanted from the rest of the story was there in this reveal. But the resolution in the end felt too quick and easy. It's a pretty big hurdle to just get over and doing a time jump felt lazy. I also didn't love how pushy the heroine was in getting the hero to even be open to the idea of having babies in the future muchless commit to a relationship knowing his fears. Girl, that's HIS choice. He's been upfront since the very beginning on how he doesn't do relationships or commitment and she keeps saying she respected that, but she really doesn't. The emotional manipulation in this book was insane. It's framed in a way to make it seem like the heroine is helping him overcome his trauma and taking a chance on love but that's not really how it played out to me. She doesn't understand boundaries at all, she kept saying she respects his choices and wants to be his friend but turns around and does the exact opposite. Her persistent aggressive pursuit of the hero from the moment she met him completely disproves/contradicts all of that. It felt very wishy washy. And the way she pressed for information from his grandmother who is recovering from a stroke and has amnesia was another example of why this heroine is lowkey problematic and rudely self-serving. Jaymes knows what she's doing is wrong by pressing this frail woman for information that's not hers to know but does it anyway cause she "can't help herself" and wants to know because he won't tell her (she knows it's hard line with him). 🙄 This isn't silly gossip you are digging up for fun, it's family trauma and grief over losing an entire family you twitbag. I knew this girl wasn't for me when 20 pages into the story she randomly is convinced out of nowhere that the hero fathered one of her coworker's 6 children and was grilling him on his sexual history mere days after meeting him. O_o Are you kidding me? Lord have mercy. I can't stand nosy TSTL bitches who don't understand boundaries. She was showing serious psycho behavior much too early on.

I will confess to really liking their roommates Will (Will really had me swooning in the end with his confession) and Maren who are firefighters and air tanker pilots but I'm not sure if I love this author's vague writing style. The relationship development here was not good.
