The lead story in this collection is CHECKPOINT. What if WW2 had ended slightly differently, with a peace settlement between America and Germany? What if ‘The Wall’ had been built across Paris, instead of across Berlin? Ben Dubritt, and his Parisian friend, Denis Lebrun, try to make their escape through the Checkpoint of the title. They find an unexpected ally in the shape of Sergeant Joe McCarthy, a member of the occupying forces. The title story was originally published by the European Institute. This, like the other three stories in this collection, is a story of speculative fiction. The others are led by DIMENSION FIVE, an unashamed tribute to HG Wells, stemming from his first novel, The Time Machine. Then there is NEW EDEN, a tongue-in-cheek dig at the ‘Adam and Eve’ SF cliché. Finally, there is THE STAR OF BIRMINGHAM, based on current lectures on astronomy given during the Festive Season.
Prior to INFIDEL in June 2025, Tom East's most recent full-length publication, in January, 2025 was TOMMY'S WAR: JULY 1914. This is nothing less than an account of an attempt to shorten WW1 in that summer month.
Other books still available include the controversial novel THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO St JUDAS, the unsparing non-fiction of LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE, about recovery from two brain haemorrhages (one kind of stroke), and the three volumes in the Eldritch Collections
Earlier, Tom was the writer of many works of fiction, commercial features, essays, reviews, 'other prose' and poetry. He was the author of six (print) books.
He was born in London, although of a Welsh family and lived in Wales for many years.
