This book was fundamental: it helped me confront, see, and accept parts of myself that I previously ignored or repressed. With a well-structured, step-by-step method, practical exercises, and a journal filled with deep questions, the guide walks you through starting to overcome trauma, understanding the root of your emotions, and, as a result, significantly improving your interpersonal relationships.
I bought it and am already applying several of the activities regularly. If you truly want to begin a journey of personal growth and learn how to integrate your shadow consciously and constructively, this book is an essential and highly recommended resource.
I liked the author's approach to this self-help book since the point is that life is not perfect and we all have room for improvement. So it will be a perfect read for those people who are not fully satisfied with their current life, those who might be experiencing stress and anxiety, but would like to address these issues. The structure of the book was easy to follow since there are three main parts: understanding shadow work, how to discover your shadow self, and celebrating personal growth. Finally, I would like to highlight that the author did an excellent job giving the tools to identify those problems and providing ideas to fix them.
Not only is this book extremely well researched, evidence-based, and beautifully written and formatted, it's incredibly in-depth. It does a deep dive into shadow work, referring to Jung's archetypes, and offers self-awareness prompts at the end of every chapter. The author consistently suggests self compassion, intuitive drawing, and journal writing throughout the phases of shadow work. As a reader, I felt she was right there beside me, walking me through a valuable process. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is psychologically-minded.
It's written in a way that demystifies the process, making it accessible for someone like me, new to the concept. While it's a challenging journey, the book serves as a steady guide, helping to integrate complex emotions and traits. Useful for those looking to understand themselves better in a balanced and thoughtful way.
"Self-actualization the process of becoming who you truly are, is the closest that you will get to perfection."
Since there is no such thing as perfection, this helps you on a journey of self-actualization. It is about accepting your journey ... even the darkest moments. By truly accepting them (not judging them or pushing them away) you are able to feel calm in your life. It helps you see "triggers" and then it allows you to be aware of them so that your reaction or response can be different moving forward.
I found this very helpful on many levels. I re-visited things that I hadn't truly taken the time to fully understand. The explanations are gentle and encouraging. And the prompts are thought-provoking. Would recommend to anyone who wants to be a better version of themselves.
As someone who is always growing and peeling back the next layer of the "onion", I enjoy finding resources to help me do that. When it comes to shadow work, this is one of the best resources I've seen. Rather than getting bogged down in Jungian philosophy, it gets right into the nitty gritty of doing the work.
