கல்கியின் பிரம்மாண்டமான "பொன்னியின் செல்வன்" நாவலின் ரசிகன் என்ற முறையில், கலாசக்கரம் நரசிம்மாவின் "கூடலழகி" புத்தகம் எனக்குக் கிடைத்தது. "பொன்னியின் செல்வன்" கதையில் ஒரு முக்கியப் பாத்திரமான ஆதித்த கரிகாலன் மற்றும் அவரது மனைவியைப் பற்றிய புத்தகம் இது. எந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இல்லாமல் படிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன், ஆனால் என்னை அறியாமலேயே கதையின் உள்ளே இழுக்கப்பட்டேன். புத்தகத்தைக் கீழே வைக்கவே முடியவில்லை.

As a fan of classic Tamil literature, particularly Kalki's monumental Ponniyin Selvan, I was intrigued when I was offered a copy of Koodalazhagi by Kalachakaram Narashima. The book focuses on Aditya Karikalan, one of the most pivotal characters in Ponniyin Selvan, and his wife. Starting with low expectations, I was immediately drawn into the narrative and found myself unable to put it down.
The novel is a compelling, yet often unsettling, read. It is filled with a continuous stream of dark, pessimistic, and almost horror-like events that can weigh heavily on the reader. This unflinching portrayal of grim historical incidents creates a haunting atmosphere that, while at times difficult, is ultimately what makes the story so gripping.
Beyond the relentless darkness, the author demonstrates a nuanced understanding of human nature. The rational and psychological handling of one character's unusual behavior was a standout feature for me. This approach grounded the character in a believable reality, adding a layer of depth that many historical fiction novels often miss.
Another truly remarkable aspect of Koodalazhagi is its detailed exploration of the ancient Tamil string instrument, the yazh. Through the pages of the book, I discovered the yazh wasn't just a musical instrument but a source of soul-touching music, with many different types existing in history. The profound knowledge and detail dedicated to this instrument brought to light the sheer loss of some 3,000 years of cultural wisdom, a realization that was both beautiful and deeply sad.
My only criticism is that the pacing felt a bit uneven towards the end, with the final fifty pages feeling a little drawn out. However, this is a minor point in an otherwise fascinating and absorbing novel.
In conclusion, Koodalazhagi is an unmissable read for anyone interested in Tamil history and literature. The infamous assassination of the Chola prince Aditya and the motives behind the murder has been presented in a different perspective in his own style by the author. Good work done by the author in presenting a plausible line of reasoning for killing Aditya. But, some of the aspects of the story are not syncing well, for example, Aditya being totally alienated from his Chola royal family residing in Thanjavur.
