When I was a kid, I met the love of my life. The best thing that ever happened to me was meeting Jaxon McBride.
Or so I thought it was.
For so many years, we were a happily married couple.
Or so I thought we were.
He was my knight in shining armor.
Or so I thought he was.
Being haunted by ghosts that thrive on secrets and lies is killing me slowly. The darkness that once receded has returned. My thoughts and my life isn’t my own anymore. I’m stuck in purgatory. It’s a never-ending cycle of guilt and unworthiness.
He told me that he loved me. He even swore it to the angels. I bet bitter lies have never tasted sweeter.
But what happens when love and betrayal collide, resulting in the ultimate sacrifice?
The only choice I have is to move forward with my life, with my daughter by my side. But what if I don’t want to live this life anymore? Everything in life happens for a reason, or so they say. I say that they are full of shit.
When Lachlan, my husband’s best friend, storms into my life, thinking he has the right to make decisions for me, I push him away. I push and push until the darkness takes over.
He won’t stick around. I’m a black widow, after all. I’m a poison that infects all of the people that I love. It fills their veins until there’s nothing left, literally.
Or so I think.
This is a MF Military romance. There are heavy and dark themes throughout. Please check the trigger warnings before reading. This book is recommended for readers 18 years of age and older.
Hey! It’s me, Demi! I’m so excited that you’re here. If you are on this crazy journey with me, i appreciate you. I live in Seattle, Washington with my husband and crazy kids. In my free time I write all the smut that I can. I love writing dark romance, but I’m a huge fan of the sweet stuff too. I am an insatiable, dark romance reader. I’m an avid Taylor Swift fan, too. Don’t hate! That girl knows how to dis her ex’s better than anyone I know. Karma is a bitch, after all. I've learned that you shouldn't get mad. You should just get even.
I should've DNF'd, but this book had so many raving reviews, I powered through.
I highlighted a bunch of stuff to show the 16-year-old-with-a-diary level of writing, the stilted, unrealistic conversations, the stupidly convoluted and badly developed plot... But honestly? I just want to put this behind me, so I'm keeping it simple.
That's how bad this book was, it took my will to rage-review right out me.
Stupid girl stays with cheating husband for seven years. He dies. The friend that's been with her through everything is in love with her. As he consoles her, they'll probably get toge- But wait! Plot twist! Forget what you knew because this is actually a story about blackmail, stalkers, rapists, secret societies, murder, secret drugs made by teenagers, more secrets, more lies, more blackmail, more murder...
I audibly sighed... My two cents? Avoid this at all costs.
I really enjoyed this book! The twist and turns had me hooked. In the beginning I really liked Jaxon until I got to the point where I despised him. I really liked Illiana, I felt terrible for what both Jaxon and Ben put her through. Lachlan easily became of my favorites and had my heart. I loved how Lachlan cared for Illiana and her daughter and always watched out for the both of them. I'm so happy that Lachlan and Illiana got their own happy ending.
Wow what an emotional roller coaster, Demi was not holding back when she wrote Shattered Wings and I am loving it. Don’t forget to check the TW/CW there are scenes and topics that may not be suitable for all.
I am not wanting to reveal too much as this book is definitely one to experience, but I will say this book had my heart hurting in several parts. It makes you feel every emotion for Illiana’s journey, twists and turns keep you turning the page. Demi did a great job with the storyline/plot and characters for a baby indie author she is definitely making an entrance
For those who love emotional rollercoaster military romances.
The writing style was a bit underdeveloped. The entire time, the plot felt too rushed and the characters too basic. There wasn’t much depth to them for the most part until the very end when we discover the truth about Jax.
There were LOTS of twists that occurred but no real depth leading up to them. They were amazing twists! I just wish the suspense of them all were spent on creating that thrill and danger more.
The writing needs to improve a lot more and the author should design the flow more intricately so the reader doesn’t feel so rushed and like we missed out on a whole bunch of background story.
TW: rape, accidental attempted suicide, grotesque torture and murder
Oh my gosh you guys, the books was emotional and gritty roller coaster. It was also my first dark military romance, and oh man was it good. I was so excited to be able to be a BETA reader for this book, Demi is the coolest. I would check trigger warnings in this books because a lot of difficult things happen that not everyone will be ok with. The story revolves around Illiana (Ellie)who is married to Jaxon. Jaxon’s best friend, Lachlan who is also in the military is Ellie’s best friend as well. The book goes in to the struggles and hardships Ellie goes through being a military spouse. But the life Ellie thought she had was a lie. So many secrets were kept from her, and with most things, the truth comes out in the end. The book was an emotional roller coaster and the story was so well written that I couldn’t put it down. Demi, girl, that ending had me screaming! Who was that?!?! What! I can’t wait to see what else Demi has in store for us!!!
I had high expectations for this and I just feel disappointed. Story started off great but as it progressed, it was just too much going on and some parts that made no sense.
Like the part where Lachlan doesn’t realize all the missed calls and texts from Remi the night before but yet his phone rings that morning so he apologizes to Remi saying his “phone must’ve been on silent” like what??? So you proceeded to look at your phone and I’m sure you could’ve seen the calls and texts at that point?? With everything going on, why would your phone even be on silent??
Then Jaxon dying - Lachlan seeing that he died.. but for his funeral, no one is able to see his body (if I were his mom, I’d be questioning everything in regard to this because wtf you mean I can’t see my sons body??) BUT WAIT, lo and behold, he’s not dead!!! HOW. Like seriously, how.
Then the fact that Illiana and Lachlan are having sex while all this shit is going down. Her disregarding and not even asking about Ben and how he died because he raped her and all her friends apparently.. but no, let’s have sex, Lachlan, because I’m an emotionless robot.
So many questions and shit that doesn’t make sense.. I mean I guess this all better be explained in the next book but as of right now, I’m annoyed.

Wooooow! This book. Woah. Talk about your emotions and your heart being ripped completely out, stomped on, smashed, shred to pieces, put back together, and then starting the process all over again 😭
Illiana has had probably one of the most awful, traumatic upbringings and lives I've ever read about. Everything she faces throughout her life just adds more to this poor girls life. I can't even begin to explain how many times I just wanted to reach through and hug her and hold on and never let go. She deserves all the dang happiness, but unfortunately for her, darkness is around every single corner of her life.
When she thought the love of her life, Jax, was her forever, but it turns out that he has an entire closet full of skeletons...it's gut wrenching. There was a point in time that I briefly thought I had a heart for Jax, but oh no. Not even in the slightest. This man is so messed up.
But Lach, oh Lachlan, he's the sweetest man ever. He's always put Lia front and and center. Always at her beckon call. Ugh I love this man so much!
This story, as mentioned before, will take you on the ultimate ride of your life. There are some VERY dark moments within, so please make sure to read thr triggers and take them seriously. But if you can push through, you'll want to expand your arms to Lia and Blakely just as much as I do!
Just got this book today as an ARC copy and OH MY GOODNESS. I could not seem to put it down.. I'm not one to add spoilers to my review, but if you love a romance with unexpected twists, then this is the book for you. It's definitely a must-read, and I currently have the 2025 book on waiting to be released list 😊
I'm currently sat here gaping like a goldfish....oh my word the surprises in this book felt never ending! It was amazing...and I ate it right up, like actually fell asleep reading this and picked it up to finish as soon as I woke up. I don't know what I was expecting but it sure wasn't this. The book was brilliantly written, the plot was so well thought out and executed and the development of the characters was really good too! You got auch a feel for them all. Illiana was a beautiful soul and I absolutely adored Lachlan! There was the perfect amount of darkness without it being too much. This spice may have taken a while to really get started but when it did, boy, was it worth the wait. The one major surprise at the end, I had kind of guessed but still when it is revealed it still felt like a shock and I was squealing my head off! This book definitely took me on a rollercoster of emotions...just amazing. Brilliant work from this author. Would definitely recommend the read just make sure you check trigger warnings first.
I loved this book so much! I have read for this author before and I love that her Novellas never feel like they are only 200 pages. She puts so much in those 200 pages it’s might as well be a full book. There is so much emotion and it’s such a ride the whole time. In the beginning I loved Ellie and Jaxon until I couldn’t stand Jaxon. If you know you know. I couldn’t believe the twist and turns this books had it was definitely unexpected. I was engrossed in this book I needed to know what was happening the whole time. Usually books this length are a quick read for me but this one wasn’t. Not because it was bad but because there was so much detail I felt like I needed to slow down to catch it all and I loved every minute of it. Lachlan was the man that Ellie deserved and I am so happy she eventually got her happy ending but I definitely have to say I did not expect that ending at all threw me for a huge loop. This book will definitely take you on a ride so be ready. I need more books. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is for me it was a little slow to start I felt like with one perspective in the beginning I felt like it was kind of just a continuous monologue and I wanted a story but it didn’t make me not want to keep reading.
WOW!!! What a rollercoaster. Illiana has been through so much. All she deserved was peace and happiness. At first, when I read her story with Jaxon, I really liked him. Only to realize he was just something or someone else entirely. This book had just the right amount of spice, plot twists, and suspense. I'm so happy Iliana finally got her happy ending with Lachlan. They deserved that and so much more. Although it seems there's more lurking in the corner.
I might still be in shock 😂😂 Can't wait for the continuation
Oh my oh my! If this wasn’t one of the most beautiful paced and emotional dark romance reads I’ve ever read! I devoured it in a couple of hours in one sitting and need more!!! The constant plot twists had my eyes wide and shocked!
I had a feeling the story would play out to an extent the way it did, but I was still shocked at the ending!
This book was amazing! At first it seemed like a book about her losing her husband and finding love with his friend but ended up being so much more. She ends up being stalked by someone and having her life at risk everyday. I loved Lachlan so much and how protective he was of her. I hate that her husband was so awful towards her. I’m glad things worked out in the end and loved how this book went. Would definitely recommend!
⚠️CHECK YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS ⚠️ This is a Dark Romance and it has some very difficult content. Your mental health is important and this book has very hard content to process.
Where to start with this book, there is really no words to explain how amazing this book is, please make sure you have extra tissue to go through this book.
The way Demi wrote this book was so deep. You can feel everything the MFC is going through, every betrayal, abuse and loss to the point you will shed tears for her, The amount of pain she endures is unreal and it feels like she never gets a brake, the more she looks the more she finds, lies and lies discovering that her entire life and marriage has been a lied from he very beginning.
This book will remind you that you need to fight no matter what life throws at you. Our FMC almost gives up, but she had that one person next to her that always kept her alive, our MMC. Our sweet boy Lachlan, the one that has always been there from day 0 but she never noticed. He will do anything to protect her, and I mean ANYTHING to make sure she’s safe. AND can we talk about the ending, I didn’t see that coming AT ALL. My head literally exploded lol.
The love story between the MFC & MMC is hard, they go through some many stipulations but they overcome it and figure out how to be happy in a cruel world. It was just amazing to read this book, and I can’t wait until Demi gives us more in this story.
what can i say this book took me on so many emotions. I laughed and i cried. Never judge a book by its cover as it may look a cute romance but it took me on an emotional rollercoaster. The book focuses on Illiana and her childhood sweetheart jaxon. When jaxon joins the military everything changes for there relationship. This book had plenty of twist and turns and some good spice!!! It’s only a short book so once you start it’s hard to stop reading. Please check trigger warnings as there is some intense things in this book. overall rating easy 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Can we just take a moment to get on our knees for Lachlan! 🙌🏻
This man I swear is a saint. Convince me otherwise I dare you. The loyalty, the love, the patience. Perfection, nothing more needs to be said about him!
The torture Ellie goes through just trying to do the right thing and be a good wife is so sad! You see a lot of very dark mental health scenes and these are laid out perfectly, this poor girl did not deserve the cards she was dealt but then again they were not naturally dealt cards were they. 😏
The constant twists kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was coming next, maybe one or two things you could work out were going to happen but I believe that was intentional to hide the bigger twists.
The ending was honestly perfectly, yes there is a HEA but it’s not as simple as it seems 😉
Overall I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for more.
EPIC! If I had to use just one word to describe this book, that's what it would be. From the very first page, I was obsessed. The twists and turns of this book had me gasping. Seriously, I felt every single emotion while reading and still can't process that ending. I am glad it ended with a HEA bit wowzers! It's a gripping, emotional, beautiful book, and it is now a favorite!!!!!
I really enjoyed seeing the things Ellie goes through in her life. This book did offer twist and turns I didn't really see coming. I'm excited to read the next book in the series. I'm only doing 4 starts because I felt like some statements were made multiple times so the significance of the statement diminished. I definitely recommend this book if you like trauma and romance. Biggest trigger in my opinion would be rape and obsessive personalities.
I also think some parts of the book should have been explained more. Like what did Ben have on the hard drive that was enough for him to kill after getting it? I also wish there was more info on Jaxons life and why he did some of the things he chose to do.

I had to read this after seeing the author post it on social media. I’m a veteran so I’m always down for a good military based book.
Let me say after the prologue I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED! But oh no, I have no self respect for myself and kept reading.
Potential reader, I hurt my own feelings by reading this book. I’m talking middle of the night sobbing myself to sleep. Then woke up and kept reading. So please read this so we get book 2
I have to get my head around this as I’ve just finished reading it.
⚠️Check the trigger warnings ⚠️
HOLY SHIT!
This book was spicy (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️) full of shocking moments and I absolutely loved how gruesome some scenes were. If I could give more than 5 🌟, I would! 🤩
There was a plot twist after plot twist and I couldn’t stop reading until it was all over. Or is it? 🫠 of course it’s not!
Also - he has a 🍆 piercing?🥵 jeeeeeeesh!
I want to know more of Jax’s background, because even though he was a cheating bastard, I am well intrigued in his reasons for doing things the way he did.
Can’t wait for the next book!
Thank you for letting me ARC read this book 🖤 So grateful 🖤
I loved this book; it was so emotional but not in a bad way. It was extremely well written in that you actually felt like you were there with Illiana. Part of the book did confused me a bit and I didn’t understand why it was there (I won’t say what it is as it would be a massive spoiler) and Personally I didn’t feel like it needed to be there although now I’ve finished the book I am intrigued further as to the reason why which can only come from the next book. It’s actually a great way to keep you guessing. I’m glad that Illiana got her HEA from Lachlan in the end and he did so well standing quietly by her side for years. I can’t wait for the next book and the answers it will bring.
Soo this book got me hooked. I absolutely fell in love with Jax & then despised him. I felt sad for Lia and then happy because she finally had her happening ending. The twists and turns took me for a loop. If the book ended with Ben being the villian, I would have been happy, but the ending of the book left so many questions and got me confused. I won't divulge any information from the end of the book, but I was happy with Lia and Lachs ending. I'm disappointed though that we really never got the answers as to what was truly Jaxs story, what was planted by Ben, and why his story didn't end at the funeral. Overall the beginning, the middle, and some of the ending of the book is worth reading and definitely got me hooked.
This book will suck you in and you won’t want to put it down, the plot was fantastic and when there was spice it was definitely there. This book will also take you on a roller coaster of emotions and the plot twist had my jaw dropping like holy crap I didn’t see it coming. Definitely one of my favorites. So you will definitely want to grab some snacks a drink and your blanket and dive in deep because once you start you won’t want to put it down.
WHAT?! Don't let this beautiful cover fool you. This book is heart wrenching and has some of the most dramatic twists I have ever read. Check your triggers. This is the epitome of a dark romance. There is very dark content in this book.
I will be sending Demi my therapy bill for this one. I cried, yelled, screamed, and laughed while reading this book. It is a whirlwind of emotions and I am here for it. You could feel the grief, the anger, the happiness. It was beautifully done. I couldn't put it down.
Illiana is a military wife who eventually learns to navigate the truths of her late husband which just won't stop being uncovered. Her best friend, Lachlan, attempts to help her through one of the hardest parts of her life. Little did they know, there was someone else who had their eyes on her.
Now, I'm going to go curl under a rock until I'm okay.
