I was introduced to this by my friend Tom (professor of geography, Sac State) and I can't help but adore everything about it. Starting with that title? Perfecto! LOL, yes the lower American River is lovely and scenic but it's still not, like, the Sierras or the ocean. But proximity makes the AR scenery all the more (mildly) awesome.
I love that I've lived in Sacramento over 20 years and explored the heck out of the AR region near Sac State (and dipped my toes into a few other areas) any yet this book taught me there's like a billion more things I need to see, experience, traverse on the American River. The only question I have is shall I do further explorations on my own or drag a friend along???
The last thing I love about the book that I love is the fact Sac State faculty and students helped in the creation of the book. Yessss! So wonderful to see the efforts of Geography Dept. faculty and students resulting in the wonderful maps included in the book. The design is also quite fabulous - it's all fantastically readable and easy on the eyes.
For sure I have my nitpicks - a bit of fact checking could have helped and I could have hoped for a more professional printing - but none of that is serious enough for me to remove any stars from my rating. Now I'm gonna run off and make sure copies are added to all my local libraries.
6 stars for all the effort it took to produce such a lovely, informative guide to one of Sacramento's most awesome attractions ("attractions"). LOL, extra star for the title alone!
This is a terrific book that highlights a wonderful part of the Sacramento area. The Lower American River is a beautiful area that is enjoyed by so many people! But even to those who are familiar with parts of the river can learn new areas and special spots from this book that is so well organized and researched. Read it before you go out exploring, and take it with you as a guide to use in-real-time! You will not be disappointed in the discoveries that this book helps you make. I know that I am looking forward to finding more hidden treasures with the help of this book.
