Liberty can only be purchased with blood. On September 9th, A.D. 9, three Roman legions commanded by Quinctilius Varus marched into the Teutonic forest of Germania. They fought a battle that would decide the fate of the Western world for the next two thousand years. Only one man had the will to unite the fierce tribes of his homeland to fight Caesar’s army. The Romans called him Arminius; he was a tribal warrior who became a Roman mercenary and citizen—gaining all the power of Rome. He sacrificed everything to fight for his country’s liberty in the face of brutal imperial conquest. This saga is the heroic retelling of Arminius’s true story.
This book is historical fiction. I read it to two of my boys at age six and they both loooooooved it. The battle scenes are well-written. The characters utter some almost-interesting things about freedom. The main character is a classic romantic hero with no dark side — the "ideal man.” Which I LOVE. Like Star Wars or Indiana Jones, this book is happily what it is and good enough to be appreciated as such.
I like the author. But what kills me about this book is that Hummel didn't have it professionally edited before publication. This book reads like it was typed up by Siri - that's how many mistakes it has. When I first started reading it, I thought I would edit it for Hummel and then send it to him, but there were too many errors; it was taking too long. There were over a dozen errors per page. This made it quite difficult and annoying to read.
So please, Mr. Hummel, have your book edited and put it back out there. You have a perfectly fine, fun book here that boys would eat up - but it is too hard to read as it is. Also, have the cover professionally done. Your book should be marketed young (maybe teens?), and right now, it is not clear from the cover to whom it is being marketed.
