Starstorm #2

All the Sacrifice of Shadows

Rate this book
She was a storm of violent sunbeams and catastrophic rainbows.

Marrying for love was never in the stars for Creslyn, as evidenced by her future husband. Drake is calculating, cruel, and wields a blade of death. By all rights, he should be terrifying. But something about him draws her in, his shadows call to the darkness she keeps locked away inside of her. She isn’t foolish enough to expect love from a marriage contract, but when they bind their vows in blood, Creslyn does the unthinkable—she claims Drake as her mate.

He was a monster of shadow and night, of death and destruction.

Cursed since his first breath, Drake has only known power and a realm of shadows. But now he’s bound to a faerie whose heart bleeds for him, and his obsession with her only grows with each passing day. Unfortunately, his world of violence puts her life at stake. Not only is he still the Shadowblade Assassin, but unrest is brewing in Aeramere, and an attack on House Celestine confirms an ill-fated prophecy. War is coming.

As Creslyn longs to find a way to break Drake’s curse and struggles to embrace her own darkness, Drake will be faced with a terrible choice—one that will only end in sacrifice.

Secrets will be unearthed and their bond will be put to the test, because love might be enough for a hero, but it will never save a villain.

I loved the first book, All the Chaos of Constellations but I love this one even more! A page-turner that I wanted to devour in one sitting. For fans of Bridgerton, The Witcher, A Court of Thornes and Roses with a touch of Shadow & Bone. Filled with sunshine meets grumpy, magic, mating bonds, blood, betrayals, steam, family, faes and dragons, I cannot recommend this more!
“I will burn worlds for you, I will shroud them in darkness and leave them in a rubble of despair. I will strike down every one of your enemies and defend you until my dying breath. I will sacrifice all of my shadows, my soul, all of it, for you. My sjellhert.

[ Contains some spoilers ]

PLOT SUMMARY
Lady Creslyn Starstorm, youngest daughter of House Celestine possessing sunshine and rainbow magic, is betrothed to the dangerous, terrifying and merciless Prince Drake Kalstrand, a Shadowblade Assassin. He wields shadow magic, lingers in the shadow, and owns a dragon, Svartos. Her oldest brother Ariesian has arranged this marriage to gain more protection and strengthen the family’s alliances, which Creslyn resents but has no choice. Sent to live with Drake in the Kingdom of Brackroth, she is practically ignored. Or so she thinks.

Drake cannot stop hiding in the shadows watching his wife-to-be, fascinated and infuriated by her. Tension stirs between them yet an obsession also blossoms: her light calls to him; his darkness calls to her. The wedding tradition of binding blood will also give them a touch of the other’s magic, which may prove to be their own rise or downfall.
“There’s darkness inside of you, Creslyn Starstorm.”
She peered up at him. “There’s light inside of you, Drake Kalstrand.”

Drake’s father, King Marius, is most displeased with the match, believing Creslyn to have bewitched his son. Indeed, if it can be believed, Marius is far worse than Drake in terms of his cruelty and malice, desiring Creslyn to be dead. Unfortunately, Drake is forced to do Marius’ bidding, having bound soul to him years ago in exchange for the Shadowblade and its powers which conveniently means Marius cannot be killed. A prophecy means that only someone with the blood of stars can break the curse, hence his eagerness to marry Creslyn so the curse can be broken. But she must accept everything he is.

But something is not only rotten in the kingdom of Brackroth: for in Aeramere, the fae kingdom, an attack at Creslyn’s sister Lady Novalise and Lord Asher’s wedding marks the beginning of the war Novalise predicted would come. But who is the traitor? Not only that, but Drake is still searching for the virdis lepatite, a valuable and powerful gem that could be the creation or destruction of everything, should the wrong hands find it.

This is told from the third-person past-tense POV of Creslyn and Drake.

OVERALL OPINIONS
You could say “Stars above”, what a read! Raymer has done it again, but better than ever before! Ma’am, you must stop writing masterpieces of quotes, I cannot possibly write them down fast enough. Seriously though, this is my favourite romantasy series, I am obsessed and I am looking forward to more – much, much more!

I found Drake the most interesting character of them all in Book 1. Shrouded in mystery and literal shadows, a man all feared and fled from, someone deemed incapable of love – I was hooked, and very delighted when so many people also wanted Drake to be the next book. I certainly was not disappointed by this!

The Statstorm family reunion and interactions were hilarious! I especially loved the moment when Creslyn comes to visit them and mentions all the things that have happened to her (including nearly dying and Drake exacting his revenge on 23 men) as if she is talking about the weather, and the rest of the family is just sitting there in shocked silence. “But other than the drab weather… Brackroth is fine enough.” That moment really made me laugh out loud, and though it’s been half a year I forgot how much I missed them. These are my precious Bridgerton equivalents!

Novalise and Asher from Book 1 are here, and it was lovely to see them again! They have their wedding and various sweet interactions. My favourite part has to be their wedding and Creslyn’s observations of them, which I must include here because everyone should read this:
Asher looked at Novalise as though she was a goddess among the stars, like she hung the moon in the sky with her own two hands. He was fascinated by her, consumed by her, so fully and devastatingly in love with her that it left Creslyn breathless.
Everyone should experience that kind of love, everyone should have someone who looked at them the way Asher gazed upon Novalise.
Everyone deserves that kind of love, Raymer, you are so right!

Solarius was my favourite brother in Book 1 (and even more so in Book 2) so I was very excited that the epilogue is written from his point of view. Book 3 will surely be about him and Lady Narissa Seabourne. The pair of them, according to Creslyn, despise one another and have done for many years. I just absolutely adore his description of her: “If a goddess of the sea were to walk the planes of this world, it would be Narissa Seaborne.”. I am looking forward to seeing that play out!

There have also been interesting developments with some of the other siblings:
Creslyn’s twin sister Caelian has a fancy for Drake’s general Kjeld, who I love the most plot-wise and hope their story is not long after Solarius’. “She never would have imagined Caelian found Kjeld attractive. He didn’t seem her type at all.” I like the parallel of Caelian saving Kjeld in the end, and he saved her earlier. Raymer got me right in the feels with them (how dare you, by the way haha!) I was devastated then relieved then further devastated when after all that, he is annoyed with her, though understandably so. I just want them to kiss and make up pronto!
Creslyn’s sister Sarelle has been betrothed by her scheming mother to Prince Aspen, who saves her at Novalise and Asher’s wedding, whose siblings disapprove of and want her to spy on him. Of course, I am sure she will fall in love and risk treason if he finds out.

<< Positives >>
🠚The cover is lovely! I like that it is the symbol of House Starstorm, in a rainbow-like colour to match Creslyn, merged with a dark dragon wrapped around it. I would love if there was a version of the cover with character art, but ultimately I do not mind!
🠚The map, always a useful element in books. It would have been nice to see a map of Aeramere too.
🠚The image used for the section divider, the symbol of House Starstorm, is perfect!
🠚The descriptions are remarkable, I can imagine everything from the locations to the clothing. I love the choice of words used. Take this example: “she could see the hundreds of twinkling stars embellished like diamonds across a canvas of black satin. Here, the constellations were not the same as they were in Aeramere. They were scattered about, as though the Mother Goddess herself had flung them into the sky with haphazard care.” Utterly beautiful!
🠚The names, as I mentioned in my review of the first book, are so clever! Some examples: Drake of course means dragon (ideal), Svortas means black/dark (works for the colour of the dragon), Marius is after the God of War, Mars (works for his destructive behaviour). The names in the Starstorm family all relate to celestial bodies (stars, sun or moon).
🠚The story is written in such a way that it could be treated as a standalone as well as part of a series. I like that it incorporates a bigger plot of impending war with the courtship between main characters.
🠚The plot twists, one after another. Ahh I loved them!
🠚The steamy scenes were delectable, because oh my goodness, one of them being on the back of a dragon? Oops I’ve said too much – or have I? Maybe that should be your incentive to read this, folks!
🠚The return of all the characters and plots from Book 1. I loved the small exchanges between Asher and Drake, considering the last time they saw each other they were fighting to the death haha.
🠚The dragons. Need I say more? I love the idea that Creslyn’s dragon Astrylys and Drake’s dragon Svartos are mates.

<< Negatives >>
🠚Some of their fallouts felt repetitive. Especially every time Creslyn rebels against Drake’s wishes. Or the number of times she wants to go with Drake, and he eventually relents. Or every time he promises not to leave her.
🠚I feel a few scenes were missing: Firstly, there should have been a paragraph of the crowd’s reaction when Drake soothes Creslyn after the crowd judges her when they appear at the wedding; Secondly, I think Creslyn and Novalise should have had more interactions (seeing as Asher and Drake have a few) other than her asking Creslyn why she is training; Thirdly, I think a scene between Creslyn and her mother Trysta when Trysta arrived back should have been there. After all, Novalise has various interactions with her mother in the first book.
🠚I have to say I was confused when Drake destroyed the virdis lapatite in the store because I thought there was only one stone. And he recognises Viktoria, but she seems to only appear in that chapter – and if she and Zaleria were one and the same this should be made clear.
🠚Another confusing thing was Drake’s prophecy and how exactly it was fulfilled. The implication was that because Creslyn accepts Drake for who he is and eventually herself for who she is, that is what does it. But I would have preferred this to be explained or talked about somewhere.
🠚I felt like it was verging on too many steamy scenes, but ultimately I enjoyed it.

CHARACTERS
-ˋˏ ꒰ Creslyn꒱ ˎˊ-
↳ She’s beautiful, she’s sweet, she’s clever, she’s powerful, she stands her ground and calls people out (especially her husband). She’s the moment. I want to be able to fight like her.
🠚I love her strength as a character. She is insecure at times and hides her true self away, but it is such a beautiful thing when eventually she decides to embrace who she truly is.
🠚Her revenge at the end was sooo satisfying. She slayed, literally and figuratively!
Creslyn refused to cower before this wretched excuse of a ruler. She was a Starstorm of House Celestine, a fae of noble birth and rank, and she was only ever obey the stars. Kings and crowns be damned.

-ˋˏ ꒰ Drake꒱ ˎˊ-
↳ This man absolutely has Chris Grey’s “Let The World Burn” song on repeat all day, every day.
🠚I loved him in the first book, and I love a good morally grey man. It is a well-thought-through and fleshed-out character! He has been through so much, I feel sorry for him, I fear him, I hate him, I love him… am I Creslyn? I guess so haha.
🠚Oh, and he is tall, and he is tall, and he is very tall, as Raymer keeps reminding us throughout!
🠚I love his overprotective, possessive side where he will stop at nothing to protect his wife. I am pleased to inform you we have a “She is mine” and a moment. The consent too, wow, and *those* steams! I swoon. Don’t forget him buying her all that jewellery.
🠚Indeed, his touch-her-and-you-die quote draws the perfect comparison between Drake and Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher, another favourite of mine.
If you touch a single hair on her head, I will find a way to end your life. Slowly.

FAV QUOTES
• Sensuous laughter, deep and rumbling, spilled from the far corner. The sound of it chilled her blood while sending a spear of heat straight through her. She’d never heard him laugh before, even if it was at her expense. To make matters worse, she *enjoyed* it.
Despite being malicious and cruel, Prince Drake was also devastatingly handsome, which made it all the more difficult to resist him. That…and there was something about the darkness haunting him that enticed her. Something about the brutal monster skulking beneath his surface that called to the deepest, most secretive part of her soul.
• She was all lush curves and satin skin, and he wanted to worship every inch of her.
Whereas the touch of winter seemed to emanate from him, she was the kiss of summer’s breath. Warm and inviting.
• He possessed no heart, no soul, both had been lost to him years ago. For Drake, there was only the thirst for more power. Except now there was Creslyn. And his desire for her was deeper and darker than even the most poignant sensation of bloodlust that coursed through his monstrous veins.
• “I want your heart, Drake.” She brushed her lips lightly across his, a thrum of power humming between them. Then she whispered, “And I want to wear it like a crown.”
“Without the darkness, a star can never shine.”
• She was falling from the heavens, blazing through the night sky like a shooting star, and only Drake could catch her.
“You are the darkness to my light, the shadow to my sun, the night sky to my stars. I see you as you are, I accept you, scars and all.”
• Creslyn Starstorm. *Sjellhert*. You are the first blossom of spring, the seduction of summer’s warmth, the chill of autumn’s breath, and winter’s final kiss… You are my compass. My star in the northern sky. You are my whispering tides, and I shall only ever worship your shores. You are the aurora in the midnight hour, that which beckons my soul.”
• “You.” The word was gravelly, grating. His expression was cruel, a tempest of volatile emotions. “You are my destruction. My salvation. My eternal damnation.”
She was the cataclysm of everything he never wanted. She was a storm of sunlight and pearlescent rainbows fractured by a splintering shard of darkness—his endless obsession.
• “When I am with you, I feel safe. When I look in your eyes, I find strength. You are my anchor in the turbulent sea of my own fear, the rock which keeps me grounded when I am too high in the clouds. And I know you will never say those words back to me, just as I know in time I will make peace with that, but I…” Her whisper fell softly into the space between them. “I love you.”
• Drake’s mouth opened, snapped shut, and then he laughed. Full and loud. He grinned, sweeping her off her clumsy feet, and lifted her into his arms. But she surprised him by capturing his cheeks with both hands. Her lips parted and the look in her eyes was one he’d never seen before.
“You’re smiling.” The words were barely a whisper, she spoke with such reverence.
ㅤHis brow lifted. “I’ve been known to do so a time or two.”
ㅤ“No. It’s different. It’s *real*.” She shook her head. “It’s the first time I’ve ever seen your smile reach your eyes.”

This book has all the tropes I love:

✨Morally Grey MMC
💜 Arranged Marriage
✨ Dragons
💜 Great Banter
✨ Spice
💜 Political intrigue
✨ Mating Bond
💜 Swoon Worthy quotes

Forced into a marriage arranged by her brother, Creslyn finds herself confined to her quarters in Brackroth, her new fiance’s realm.
While she has no illusions of finding a love match, there’s something about the dark, brooding prince that draws her to him, like a moth to a flame…

I simply devoured this book. While I loved the first one, this one has to be my favorite (shadow daddy who rides a dragon and all) 😉
The tension between Drake and Creslyn was palpable, the banter was slaying, their chemistry undeniable and we dive deeper into the plot and world building.

Creslyn was such an interesting character! She is nothing like the meek princess everyone thinks her to be, she is fierce, determined and strong.
And Drake has more to him as well than the assassin and monster they believe him to be.
He would burn the world for Cress, and I’m here for it!

Thank you so much to Hillary Raymer for this ARC, I will definitely be rereading this one before the next book comes out! 🖤

Alright, this book had no business being as good as it was. Drake first appeared in All the Chaos of Constellations and I knew, I just knew (and hoped 😅) that we'll see more of him. I'm pretty simple - I see a shadow daddy - I like - I add to TBR.

Creslyn and Drake were so good together. At first Creslyn seemed quite shy and uncertain but with Drake's help she's really come into her full power and it was beautiful to follow her journey. It's so wonderful to watch when two characters meet and they can simply be themselves with each other. No reservations, comfortably showing all the good and the bad. I think that's what I liked the most in this book. The same was for Drake, his whole life he thought he was a monster but he was so much more and he could finally see that with Creslyn's help.

The story also follows a political aspect and the lives of Creslyn's siblings. The author did such a good job of following the main characters story while also leaving crumbs about other characters that I absolutely ate up and now I'm dying to know what happens with Solarius & Narissa and Caelin & Kjeld.

Side note - spice was *chef's kiss" and the shadows were a pleasant surprise 👀😉
I just have to mention this quote because I laughed out loud:

“If you’re asking if I will shower her with affection, appease her on a daily basis, and write poems in her honor, the answer is no. But if you’re asking if I will defend her name, remain faithful only to her, and slay all of her enemies without hesitation, then yes.” -

Reader, he did in fact, shower her with affection and appeased her on a daily basis ->

“What need do I have for air? You steal away my every breath.”

"You are my whispering tides, and I shall only ever worship your shores. You are the aurora in the midnight hour, that which beckons my soul.”

“You are a sea in which I would gladly drown, a storm I would let destroy me until there was nothing left. When I am with you, I remember what it means to live, to feel. You are my eternal breath. Through shadows and sunlight, prophecies and fate, all I want, all I long for, is you.”

This was a perfect mix of romance and spice and just a dash of dark to keep the villainous vibes.

I only wished Drake groveled more and that Creslyn didn't forgive him that easily so my rating is 4.5 ⭐ which I've rounded up to 5 ⭐ because Drake 🫠

A big thank you to author Hillary Raymer for providing me with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

4.5🌟!

Whew what a journey it was.
A fast paced, steamy, marriage of convenience romance with fascinating and unique world with mortals, immortals, faes and dragons 🐉!

Drake was such an interesting hero. Cunning, wicked and morally grey to the core. And Creslyn was his match in every way. In the second half she tricks the villain and it was so unexpected and impressive. She was unpredictable and I loved her fire. Her growth was incredible.

All the characters had depth and I enjoyed the writing style.

I would recommend you read book 1 before this one as it will give you more insight to the world. I didn’t do that but it was still so good.
Still i have a tiny complaint about lack of ‘sufficient’ grovelling. There is some, but I believe Cres forgave him too soon.

-Marriage of convenience.
-Shadow daddy, morally grey hero.
-Sassy and bold heroine with heart.
-Opposite attract.
-TW, Safe and recommended.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

Okay but if there’s two words to summon me it’s “shadow” and “daddy” 🤭

This, like the first book was a fun ride. I really loved Drake and Creslyn. I thought Creslyn was really strong and fierce and she always tries to do the right thing. The way she always wanted to look out for Drake and her siblings? Love her.

As for Drake, he was in fact top tier shadow daddy and a real villain. The way he was obsessed with her from the beginning had me swooning. Both of their powers were super cool.

The only thing that let me down was that I wished this was more enemies to lovers. It felt very insta love/ lust and I wished there was more tension and buildup because their banter in the beginning made me giggle 🤭

Nevertheless the spice was spicing 🥵🔥 All I will say is there’s a one dragon scene and I will leave you with that information 👀

Although this series is interconnected standalones and technically you could read this alone, I would recommend reading the books in order, as the overarching plot line and world building will make more sense this way.

📖: All the Sacrifice of Shadows (Starstorm Series Book 2)

“𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘶𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘬𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴. 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘐 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘭.”

Bridgerton meets high fantasy with a deliciously dark twist in this stunning installment in the Starstorm series!

This story focuses on Creslyn (the youngest Starstorm sister of Nova from Book 1) and her arranged marriage to the Shadowblade Assassin. Drake believes himself unable to love and cursed to only bring destruction in his wake. Cressy resigns herself to a marriage devoid of love yet is inexplicably drawn to him.

A whisper of hope flickers as the curse is revealed and an unexpected and passionate love story ensues. Their darkness calls to each other, but will the darkness destroy them both?

Tropes:
👀 Dual POV
🩶 Shadow Daddy MMC
💍 Arranged marriage
⚠️ Touch her & definitely 💀
💫 Curses & magic bonds
🌶️ Spicy training scene
🐉 One dragon
🍆 Shadow play
🗣️ Banter

“𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴, 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭, 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵, 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘔𝘺 𝘴𝘫𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘵."

I could not get enough of Cressy and Drake!
Oh Daddy Drake…what more do I need to say other than: please meet my new morally grey, dragon-riding Shadow Daddy (who knows how to use them 🤭) 🙌. He takes his rightful place beside the esteemed Shadow Daddy book boyfriends 🤝🪪

Cressy quickly adapts to the new world around her. Her spirit is fierce and she learns how capable she can be stepping outside of her usual comfort zone in Aeramere. I loved seeing her confidence grow and witnessing her drive to break the curse and fight for what she wants. From wielding her cunning mind to honing her physical skills, she proves she is a formidable FMC who should not be underestimated. Can Creslyn and Drake weather the storm of what’s to come?

Hillary creates pure magic in ATSOS, seamlessly layering a darker narrative of deeply complex characters and balancing the overall tone with snark, humor (I cackled out loud at one scene that is forever seared into my memory), supreme microtropes, and sizzling tension and spice.

All the Sacrifice of Shadows features *everything* I love in a fantasy romance. Do not miss this dazzling story of a tortured anti-hero and underestimated heroine of violent sunbeams and catastrophic rainbows.

Thank you Hillary for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review

I did not read the first one, but I didn't need to to understand what was going on in this one. I'd consider this one a stand alone. Started off mysterious in a way. MMC stayed in the shadows and FMC was not told much. The story progressed pretty quickly and we learn they are forbidden lovers in the eyes of the king. Don't want to give a whole lot away but it had a great set up and kept things interesting all the way through.

✨ARC Review Incoming..✨

Title: All the Sacrifice of Shadows by Hillary Raymer
Series: Starstorm (standalone) book 2
Rating⭐️: 4.5
Spice🌶️: 3
POV🗣️: Dual Pov, 3rd person

Read this if you like -
✔️Arranged Marriage
✔️Grumpy x Sunshine
✔️Morally Grey Shadow Daddy
✔️Court Intrigue
✔️Dragons
✔️Touch Her & 💀
✔️Discovery of Identity
✔️Training Scenes
✔️Positive Character Development
✔️Mate Bonds
✔️Interconnected Standalone w/ HEA

I’m officially deeming Hillary Raymer the Queen of standalones. All the Sacrifice of Shadows, much like its predecessor All the Chaos of Constellations, perfectly encapsulates a fleshed out story with equal parts plot and romance. The stakes are high enough that it pulls you in and keeps you on your toes without completely stressing you out. The romance is full of tension and angst while also being super sweet.

Drake is yet another broody shadow daddy that will be on my list of favorites. I love how he slowly started showing a softer side with Creslyn and even eventually with her family. Unlike many stories where the dark and grumpy MMC has to go through a character development to possess that softer side, Drake’s was there all along and the evidence for that is sprinkled throughout the book from the beginning. I loved seeing him be more vulnerable with Creslyn.

Creslyn really took me by surprise. We saw glimpses of her in the first book and she was not at all what I expected. She’s soft but strong, confident, straightforward, and empathetic. I love the way she embraces Drake’s darkness and adapts so well to all the changes of his kingdom. They truly do compliment one another and at the end, they are yin and yang; her with a little darkness and him with a spark of light. ☯️

“Are sunlight and shadow not two halves of the same whole?”

In the end we get a happily ever after with closure to their story, and an epilogue that leads us right into the next book which will focus on another Starstorm sibling, his very reluctant bride to be, and possible war looming on the horizon.

🗣️ “You are the darkness to my light, the shadow to my sun, the night sky to my stars. I see you as you are, I accept you, scars and all. For as long as Vespira remains in the sky with her staff casting over us, my soul is yours.”

🗣️ “You truly want my forgiveness, Drake?
On your knees…and grovel for it”

🗣️“Tell me where you were, Drake, and do not lie.” Her voice was a sensual cadence that spoke to his soul. She moved her hand lower still, positioning the dagger’s tip right above the bulge in his pants. “Or I will cut off your cock. Which would truly be a shame, as I find I’m rather fond of it.”

🗣️ But this was not the pounding force of lust. It was different, a sensation that left his heart feeling like she’d wedged a dagger of promise into the wall of stone he’d built around it. One wrong move, and the entire thing would collapse. She was fracturing his defenses, breaking the foundation of his depraved soul. She would be his undoing.

🗣️ “Let them see how brightly a star can shine in the pitch of night.”

Thank you Hillary for the opportunity to review this in advance!! 🫶🏼

This is the second book in the Starstorm series. Each book features a new couple (think Bridgerton vibes) but the overarching plot continues and builds with each story.

I absolutely loved this book. Devoured it and wanted more. It was hot, sexy, and full of emotion and passion.

I knew I loved Drake when I read the first book in the series and I was so excited when I found out he was going to be the main man of this second book. He’s dark, broody, dangerous, morally grey, mysterious, and rides a dragon…. Need I say more? Lol

One thing I didn’t know going into this book was how much I’d end up loving the main female character, Creslyn, too! She was so bad a**… but not overtly so. She had this inner strength that was admirable and a darkness inside of her that she was afraid to show. I loved reading her journey of letting go and accepting all of herself.

Okay so I’m normally a slow burn 🔥 fan (one of my favorite tropes) but guysssss this one is insta-love done well! 🙌 It burns early on in the story and it’s not only completely delicious but it’s also so full of emotion. 🥹 That’s one thing that I’m sometimes missing in books that don’t have a slow burn… the feels! But this one had it in spades. I felt the love and the emotions and that’s what I’m here for!

Other things I loved since I’m just raving about the two MCs, the spice, and the feels 😂: the dragon, the shadows 🥵, the other characters (looking at you Kjeld), the bog scenes, and the possible future relationships! I’m looking forward to continuing this series!

I highly recommend this book if you love:
✨morally grey shadow daddy
✨a strong FMC
✨banter and chemistry 😮‍💨
✨betrayals & secrets
✨very spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️
✨groveling
✨only drops to his knees for her 😏

Thank you to the author for an advanced reader copy of this book. This is my voluntary and honest review 🫶.

All the Sacrifice of Shadows is an opposites-attract romantasy with intricate worldbuilding and well-written romance. It is written in third person with viewpoints from both the FMC, Creslyn, and the MMC, Drake. Creslyn is the youngest Starstorm sister, with powers of sunshine and rainbows (no, literally sunshine and rainbows). Drake is the cold Shadow Assassin, a man cursed from birth. The book revolves around the relationship of these two characters and Creslyn's attempts to break the curse on Drake.

I loved Creslyn! She is so flippant, and is often overlooked, but she shows off her own strength in this book. Creslyn reminds me of the sun-warm in the best way, but can also be burning hot. Though she gives off soft, warm vibes, she can be fiesty too. I also liked the relationship between Cres and Drake. They went from lust to love, and the contrast between the two of them is really nice. They can fill the holes in each other. The rest of the book is also pretty good. The worldbuilding was nicely developed and writing style was pretty good. It took me a little time to get invested in the book, but I did love the twists. Though the one at the end was really unexpected...

If you are looking for a book full of adventure, magic, and romance, you should read All the Sacrifice of Shadows!

If you would have told me that the Drake Kalstrand that I HATED from the depths of my soul from All the Chaos of Constellations would be the same Drake Kalstrand from All the Sacrifice of Shadows that I am utterly OBSESSED with, I would laugh in your face. But alas, here we are. Not laughing, but feeling all different types of emotions after finishing this book!!!

This is book 2 in The Starstorm series and I loved every minute of it. I was nervous for this one I’m not going to lie. I needed shadow daddy Drake (MMC) to have a good character arc and that is exactly what you get. Our FMC, Creslyn Starstorm…amazing. I loved her. I wish I was her.
I thoroughly enjoy all of the Starstorm siblings so much. As well as all the other side characters…ugh. I am in dire NEED of the rest of the siblings books like ASAP!

If you love:
🌈 a shadow daddy
🌈 badass FMC
🌈 dragons
🌈 close-knit family members
🌈 “touch her and die” vibes
🌈 piercings (😏)
🌈 revenge

Then you will absolutely enjoy the ride this story takes you on. It is wonderfully paced, has great characters, a great plot that wasn’t totally predictable…I could go on and on.
I just had a great time. Would highly recommend!

Where are my spicy romantasy loving friends who like morally grey shadow daddies and dragons?? This is a MUST READ!!

I DEVOURED this book! I was instantly hooked from the first chapter with the banter and tension between Drake and Creslyn. The chemistry between these two is OFF THE CHARTS!! Drake is the epitome of a morally grey shadow daddy that is possessive as hell and only soft for her. He fully backs up his threats that no one better touch, threaten, or even look at Creslyn! My sunshine and rainbows Creslyn is a feisty little faerie that is determined, caring, and fearless. She has no issue putting Drake in his place, shoots it straight, and will do anything for what she wants! I was eating up every interaction between these two and blushing like crazy!!! On top of all the delicious spice, we also get depth and feel the inner conflicts both Drake and Creslyn go through. There is deceit, betrayal, acceptance, and the most beautiful forgiveness as well!

Hillary is amazing at writing vivid imagery that makes you feel like you are completely immersed in the story! As this is the second book of what will be eight interconnected standalones, you can already start mapping out how the events in this book will contribute to the overarching plot. We have prophecies and brewing war and questionable rulers and a few other fun twists that I won’t mention for spoiler reasons. I am also so excited about several potential romances I can see coming in future books with the other Starstorm siblings and the epilogue will leave you already highly anticipating the next book!!

While this series can stand on its own, if you have read Hillary’s Faeven Saga you will recognize quite a few references which is so exciting to see how these worlds are connected - queue the “Hillaryverse” and I am down for it!!

Some of my fav quotes.....

“You are my compass. My star in the northern sky. You are my whispering tides, and I shall only ever worship your shores. You are the aurora in the midnight hour, that which beckons my soul.”

“You are my destruction. My salvation. My eternal damnation.”

“I will burn worlds for you, I will shroud them in darkness and leave them in a rubble of despair. I will strike down every one of your enemies and defend you until my dying breath. I will sacrifice all of my shadows, my soul, all of it, for you.”

“You are a sea in which I would gladly drown, a storm I would let destroy me until there was nothing left. When I am with you, I remember what it means to live, to feel. You are my eternal breath. Through shadows and sunlight, prophecies and fate, all I want, all I long for, is you.”

I really liked this book. I felt like I didn’t want to put it down but also go slowly so it wouldn’t be over too fast.

Just didn’t like the ending too much. It felt rushed and unfinished.

All the Sacrifice of Shadows ARC review:
Hillary has done it again. Despite the dates- I really read this book in 1.5 sittings. I was INVESTED. Hillary has the unique ability to write just enough detail to make you picture everything perfectly in your head but not too much where I lose interest- it’s a delicate balance 😂.
Drake and Creslyn’s story is a beautiful (and 🌶️) journey. I love both of their character arcs and how they really came into their own in this book. Hillary also has an amazing talent at making love every single side character and I now want them all to have their own stories- please and thank you. This book is worth every penny and minute you spend reading it.

I had the absolute privilege of beta reading this story. It was one of my fav beta reads ever! Polished and snatched my attention immediately - it was very much obvious how naturally talented Hilary is at writing top tier romantacy!

I laughed, I cried, my wig was snatched, my kindle nearly caught fire from the chemistry between our two mains… literally such a good story. Did I mention there are dragons? 😏

This series brings everything we love about Bridgerton but makes it fae and all the fantasy elements that truly make an iconic story. I cannot recommend this series and this author enough!!

mmmmm i’m disappointed :/

the first book in this series was sooo good, and i admit i expected a lot out of this sequel considering how enamored i was with drake during book 1. in the beginning both he and creslyn showed lots of potential as characters/a couple (despite the insta-lust). but it was a constant swinging pendulum of them being sort of toxic/rude to each other and sweet/endearing. total mindfuck- and not in the lana myers kind of way. i just needed them both to have more trust, lay it all out there, and stop making stupid decisions without any forethought.

don’t even get me stttaaaarted on the BETRAYAL🫨 wtf was that?!? i know i know- the crystal. but even then…. my flabbers were fucking gasted; let me tell you. then he had the gall to think he could fix it lickety split, and she only had a spine/made him grovel for a total of 2.5 seconds?! creslyn. babe. pick your self worth up off the floor and make that man crawl back into your good graces after that stunt he pulled. ugh. bleh. just bleh. that really was my 13th reason with this book.

pretty disappointing compared to book 1, but will most likely continue the series bc i’m hella intrigued by solarius and narissa’s predicament and backstory.

I received an ARC of this book and my thoughts are my own. This had a an okay plot and a bad relationship. I think the plot has a lot of potential but it’s not for me.

I’m sorry this relationship is abusive and unhealthy. This was tough for me to finish. The female main character forgives the male main character for AWFUL things. She is also kind of terrible. I think this book needed a lot of development before going to the press. The spicy scenes were awful for me because there were things that happened that seemed downright abusive and NOT sexy/hot. I would not recommend this book overall.

As a sequel, it really delivers on the intrigue sparked by Drake in the first book while giving us more insight into Creslyn, a woman who is as fearless as she is compassionate. Together, their dynamic drives this captivating and emotionally charged romantasy story.

Creslyn’s transformation and growth is one of the best parts of the book. She begins as a woman caught in a web of obligation but grows into someone who not only embraces her own darkness but wields it fearlessly. Her bond with Drake is immediate and intense—bordering on insta-love—but their connection is written such that it feels pretty natural. There’s an undeniable chemistry between them, amplified by some well-written spicy scenes. They know what they want, and their confidence in that is refreshing, even if it develops quickly.

Drake’s character is equally compelling—dangerous yet vulnerable, carrying the weight of his title and a lifetime of violence. However, his decision late in the book was really frustrating to witness, especially since Creslyn’s forgiveness comes so quickly and far too easily, in my opinion. It felt like a missed opportunity to let their relationship earn its strength through a more drawn-out reconciliation but I understand WHY given that each of these stories is confined despite being interconnected.

The prophecy and political intrigue add some depth, though the narrative focus remains on Creslyn and Drake’s relationship. This balance works well, but at times, the romance overshadows the stakes of the larger conflict.

Despite its very minor flaws, All the Sacrifice of Shadows is such a satisfying read. The fast-paced romance and complex characters make it a strong addition to the series.

Thanks so much to the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

A shadow-wielding, dragon-riding villain paired with a rainbow-spouting, sunshine-conjuring wisp-like fae with a hidden dark side = ideal

“If we do not leave now,” he muttered, pulling her close as she squirmed in his hold, “we will never make it out of this bedroom.”

Oh, and he pierces her nippies during smexy times and has a textured peen, just in case you needed more excuses *shrug* lmao

“Ever since the first moment I saw you,” Drake growled, his voice hoarse. “I have wanted this. I have wanted to ruin you. To watch you come undone in my arms. Over and over.”

4.25 stars

This was everything I hoped it would be after we met both Drake and Creslyn in All the Choas of Constellations. The main question I have is: will there be baby dragons in the next one?? Because I need to know right meow.
“An insult to my wife is an insult to me. So, let me be perfectly clear. First, I am going to cut off your hands for touching her. Then I will gouge out your eyes for looking upon her. I will carve out your tongue for even daring to speak to her. And as a final punishment for your lascivious thoughts regarding my wife, I am going to hack off your pathetic dick and shove it down your throat. The last thing you will remember before you die will be when I smile as you choke on your own cock.”
And that was exactly what Drake did.

I loved our two MCs together, they were great, and even though it was slightly insta-like, I thought there was enough tension and movement between the two that it went well. I loved that we’re getting more of the background story, things that I felt were left up-in-the-air from book 1 (i.e. war), and I am a fan of Hillary’s world-building, it was magical and emotional and romantic.

Creslyn straddling him with the intent to inflict harm was quite possibly one of the most provocative things he’d ever endured.

I love that Creslyn was such a quick learner (um, in fighting, I see how that could be misinterpreted lmao) and she stood her ground and fought for herself - i.e. wasn’t a pushover. Drake was a legit villain in this and that was great! He did lots of questionable things, things that caused lots of anger and tears and emotions. And the plot twist/reveal! Le gasp!

His future wife would rather drink poison than fuck him. Lovely.

^ I am excited for the next few couples we saw glimpses of in this one, like that quote, yes, please.

“Do you want me to fuck you on the back of my dragon?”

Thank you Hillary for this ARC!

✨All the Sacrifice of Shadows✨

Hillary does it again and it just keeps getting better! I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment in Hillary’s Starstorm series of interconnected standalones with an overarching plot. Actually, I think I enjoyed it more!

In this book, we get to follow Drake and Creslyn, who we both met in book one but didn’t get to know Cres well. After Cres is sent with Drake to Brackroth as his arranged bride, she is set against many challenges: the main one, Drake. Along with the constant dreary weather, having to learn to train, hiding her deeper power beneath her sunshine and rainbows, Creslyn must battle Drake’s temper, his curse, a corrupt king, and an upcoming war. But where Drake’s temper peaks his passion soon takes over. Though he has resigned himself to a villain, there’s much more to Prince Drake and Creslyn is determined to find out.

I absolutely adored the relationship between Cres and Drake. Cres met Drake toe to toe. The passion and spice, the banter, the teasing, the possessiveness (from both sides) was so good and heated. Hillary did an amazing job and this is truly a Romantasy for the ages. I’ll definitely reread this one!!

Tropes you may find in ATSOS are arranged marriage, forced proximity, morally grey shadow daddy, tense rainy training session(s), medium high spice, feisty FMC with sunshine and rainbows magic, character and romance driven, hidden identity, hidden powers, loyal family ties, dragons, spicy dragon and library scene, “my wife”, mind speaking, bonds, deeper magic and world building, epilogue that leads to book three!!

Thank you so much for letting me read this gifted arc, Hillary. It will truly be one I come back to for cozy reads that make me giggle and kick my feet.

This is a story that will live in my head rent free for a long time! I’m still thinking about it days after finishing. Drake & Creslyn are the perfect complement to each other with his shadows & her sunshine and rainbows. This also mirrors their personalities, in which he draws out the darkness in her and she brings out the light in him. The “he hates everyone but her” is one of my favorite tropes and Drake embraces it fully! And don’t even get me started on the spice in this book 🥵 🌶️

I love how this series follows the Starstorm siblings; at least 2-3 of the next couples were set up in this book and I’m already obsessed with all of them! Definitely pick up this series ASAP!

This is book 2 of the Starstorm series, an interconnected collection of books by Hillary Raymer.

While not required to read book 1, All the Chaos of Constellations, after receiving this e-arc, I wanted to go and read book 1 first. I strongly encourage the same because it helps in giving background information of the world and characters.

In a Bridgerton meets Fae style world, each book so far has focused a new couple surrounding the Starstorm siblings (there’s 8 of them). Fast-paced from page 1, it’s a quick, easy, and fun read for those who like their romantasy stories with spice and plot!

I was blown away at how much I liked book 1, and that continued here with book 2, All the Sacrafic of Shadows! Following Cresyln Starstorm and the Prince of Shadows, Drake, as he swoops Creslyn away from her home and family upon an agreement with Cresyln’s brother. But Creslyn isn’t some damsel in distress, weak and fragile. She embraces her new world head on, while also not denying her feral attraction to her betrothed, Drake. While seen as a girl of sunshine and happiness, Creslyn has a darkness of her own she’s never revealed to anyone. Drake, on the other hand, has a reputation for his darkness and believes he needs Creslyn, or her blood, to break his curse. Tests along the way bring out the question of which will win out, power or love?

Again, I have thoroughly enjoyed this series so far. The inspiration of a Bridgerton type family, but make it fantasy has been done really well here. As a fan of Bridgerton, I have enjoyed this WAY more.

Each novel may center around one couple, but I love how there is not only a sub-plot that the couple is dealing with, but then on a underlying level beneath is this overall plot that links them all together. It goes beyond JUST the romance, even if that is front and center.

The spice in All the Sacrifice of Shadows was definitely kicked up a notch and I loved it! I think it was called for with Creslyn and Drake too with their character personalities.

I also love the family love and closeness of this book as well. And how even as the family expands, they absorb their new members with open arms to come together against a common goal.

Hillary has set it up very nicely for the next 3 books at least I think in book 2 and I can’t wait to keep reading this series!

Thank you again for the e-arc! I have had a fun and wonderful time reading these!

ARC Review! Thank you to the author for an early copy of this book and the opportunity to provide a review!

4.5/5⭐️this book felt like a perfect romantasy. If you’re a fan of a quick romance book but want to add in extra elements like dragons, mates, fae/witches/humans, magical powers then this book is for you. What I appreciated the most is the long plot that is developing throughout this series. It definitely makes me want to come back and finish the other books to see what happens (intentionally vague to avoid spoilers). My only comment is that the world building was not 100% but I don’t think it needed to be either for this to be a good and fun read. Other positive things included in this book were political struggles, training, fighting, and family drama. While that may seem like a lot, I believe it was done in a manner that it doesn’t seem overwhelming but more sprinkled in.

I would recommend this book to those who share these similar interests, and personally, I can’t wait for the next one!

EVEN BETTER THAN BOOK 1!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶🌶🌶🌶

What to expect:

👥 Dual POV
🐉 Dragons
🙌 Grumpy x Sunshine
🥵 Spice that would make Cassian blush
💘 Epic love story
🥸 Hidden identity
💀 Touch her and die
⚔️ Action and adventure
🤡 Political intrigue
🖤 Shadow daddy
🤯 Unexpected plot twists

Book 2 picks up right where we leave off in All the Chaos of Constellations. Creslyn is betrothed to the shadow assassin Prince Drake and he whisks her off Brackroth. She finds herself drawn to him, unafraid of his darkness and in turn, he is drawn to her light. Through many trials and tribulations they help one another discover who they truly are and experience so much growth as individuals and as a couple 💘 I was sooo emotional reading this and couldn't put it down! The intimate scenes are🤌 and some of the most delectable 🌶️ scenes I have read since Charissa Weak's Witch Collector Series! My only tiny bit of constructive feedback was that the end felt rushed following a massive revelation that happens in the second to last chapter of the book. *Trying to avoid spoilers 😉* A lot happens very quickly with only 1 chapter to wrap it all up and we don't really get any insight into the ramifications of Creslyn's actions during this pinnacle moment that we have been working towards for the entire book. I'm dying to know how everything unfolds as this massive change take root with the MMC. Reading a bit of the next siblings journey in the epilogue was nice but I would have preferred a bit more of an ending of Drake and Creslyn's story after all the epic shit they went through.

Overall, this book was spectacular and I can't wait to read what she writes next 💖

Come for the exceptional spice, stay for the A++ character development and DRAGONS. This book is a love letter to the sunshine girls with a dark side, and anyone who loves a villain exactly the way they are—no redemption arc required.

Creslyn and Drake defy all their own stereotypes in the best way and deliver an unstoppable love story that will have you laughing, crying, swooning, taking a cold shower, and screaming until the very last page.

As the second installment in the series, the world building in this book explosively capitalizes on the revelations of book one, while setting us up for what is sure to be a harrowing journey forward. But with the powerful, enchanting, and unified force that are the Starstorm siblings stepping up to claim their happily ever afters AND defend their world, I have a feeling we’ll be in the best of hands!!

All the Sacrifice of Shadows is the second book in the series. I believe this book could be read as a standalone, but I feel like they were referencing a lot of events from the first book. I still did enjoy reading the book! I like how fast paced the book was and never felt overwhelmed by the events. Once I hit half way through the book, I ended up reading the second half in basically 1 day because i just needed to know what happened next.

If you enjoy romance, fantasy, and spice I definitely recommend giving this book/series a try!

Overall, this book is a solid romantasy and I will be reading the first book and most likely all the other books in this series! Thank you Hillary Raymer for giving me the opportunity to review your book! ❤️

I want to start off by saying that I read All the Chaos of Constellations before this book, so my thoughts might be a little different than someone who has only read this book. That being said, you don’t necessarily need to read AtCoC before you read this one.

I adored this book. Whereas AtCoC felt like a rivals to lovers story with heartbreak and conflicting feelings and whatnot, this one is very enemies to lovers coded. The conflicting attitudes and thoughts of Creslyn and Drake bring about some really fun drama and conflict that adds to the story.

I absolutely loved seeing more of our characters, especially Drake. I always love having the opportunity to have a character as a side character in one book become a main character in another with their own POV.

The alternating POV in this book really gave us some amazing insights into the characters minds, which helped the story’s pacing.

The plot was not necessarily the most original, but I absolutely adored every second of it.

Thank you very much to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for an ARC of this book.

Tropes:
- Arranged marriage
- Morally gray Shadow Daddy
- Sunshine FMC
- Villain gets the girl
- Touch her and 💀 (painfully)
- Only one dragon
- Shadow 🍆
- Insta-lust/Insta-love
- 3rd person limited/dual POV

After finishing All the Chaos of Constellations, I was foaming at the mouth for Drake and Creslyn's story, and it did not disappoint! If you love villains and sunshiny heroines with a bit of a dark side, you absolutely want to read All the Sacrifice of Shadows.

Drake is everything you want in a villainous, dragon riding Shadow Daddy. More morally black than gray, he unapoletically lives in the shadows, has his own agenda, and does not care what he has to do or who has to hurt to achieve it. He's ruthless and heartless to everyone, except where Creslyn is concerned, and I was here for it 🫠

Creslyn, with her sunshine and rainbow magic, looks sweet and innocent, but she's hiding a sliver of darkness inside. In turn, she doesn't shy away from the darkness in Drake. She pushes him in a way everyone else is scared to, in a way no one else can. She's kind and warm, but fiesty and fearless. I loved her and the character growth she shows in the book.

Drake and Creslyn's chemistry is 🔥 right from the start. I loved their whole dynamic - the push and pull, the tension, the banter, the way they each only wanted the other to be who they truly were, and the way they help one another accept the truth of themselves. Their journey is not without bumps and heartache, but the ride is fantastic.

Once again, Hillary's world building is impeccable, with vivid and descriptive imagery, complex and compelling characters, political intrigue, power struggles, and an interesting magic system. She excels at showing and not just telling, which is so important in a fantasy or romantasy story. The more I read from her, the bigger fan I become.

All the Sacrifice of Shadows is engaging, emotional, angsty, spicy, and overall fun and enjoyable. It made me want to laugh, cry, and scream; I was hooked! I have loved both Starstorm books so far and am so excited for the rest of the series, which is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I 1000% recommend it!

Note: While the Starstorm series books are all technically standalones, they are interconnected and have some overarching plot points that remain unresolved at the end of each book. I highly recommend reading them in order.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series (All the Chaos of Constellations) and was super intrigued by Drake’s character in that book. That said, I was so thrilled to receive this ARC and follow his story with Creslyn!

This book had a lot of positives going for it! As with the first book, it was a fun read filled with It was full of romance, magic, reveals, twists, manipulation/betrayal, and court politics. I really enjoy the author’s writing style and her storytelling is very engaging. I love that these stories are written in dual POV! I really enjoy the world she has created in this series! The sibling dynamics are fun to read about and I’m enjoying learning more about their powers! I liked that Creslyn was bold and didn’t take 💩 from anyone despite her own insecurities. I liked that Drake was endearingly obsessed with Creslyn. He was also a TRUE morally gray character! And if you’re looking for a shadow daddy who knows how to use those shadows, look no further! 😉

That all said, I did have some issues with this one. My main complaint was that it was very much an instalove/instalust situation which took away from the romance for me. (I tend to prefer more tension and build-up 🤷‍♀️) I also felt that there was too much focus on the lust and physical side of the relationship which also took away from the romance. I did feel like some aspects of their relationship seemed pretty toxic. I think some of the things that were supposed to be sexy from Drake came off more as red-flaggish. Granted, he is a true morally gray character so some of that is to be expected…I just didn’t find some of it as sexy or swoony as I think the author had probably intended. I felt like some parts felt rushed in their resolution (eg. The situation with the gem and the witch and the situation with the king) which left them feeling a bit anticlimactic. I was also confused by certain aspects of the world-building and story (eg. how mating bonds work in this world and Drake’s curse).

Overall, I enjoyed this read and would recommend this series to others. Overall, I still enjoyed this read and would recommend this series to others! I plan to continue the series and definitely have several characters I’m excited to learn more about in future books!

Thank you to Hillary Raymer, Victory Editing, and Netgalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
