Hi, I'm M.M. Crumley Your Author Extraordinaire (Also Known as M.M. Boulder)
As M.M. Crumley I write Urban Fantasy books full of supernatural action, nail-biting-mystery and; laugh-out-loud humor. Why? Because stories, myths, and legends have always been a huge part of my life... As a child, I liked nothing better than to lose myself in a world where magic and heroes were part of the fabric of existence.
As my pen name M.M. Boulder I write psychological thrillers and murder mysteries that bring the darker impulses we may not feel completely comfortable with into the light. My stories are full of lies and deaths, but there is always justice. A type of justice that's not afraid to get its hands dirty. I write morally ambiguous characters who are pushed to their limits and take matters into their own hands. In my world getting away with murder has never been so much fun!
No matter what I write every one of my characters are real to me. They exist. They are three-dimensional beings who demand that their stories be told. If I were to turn away from them, they would haunt me; and so I don't. Instead I chase after them and write down everything they say!
I have several series to help you scratch your itch for adventure: THE HOUSE OF GRAVES Series THE IMMORTAL DOC HOLLIDAY Series THE LEGEND OF ANDREW RUFUS Series JANEY FALKE: SAINT KILLER Series (Coming Soon) Five Deliciously Dark Psychological Thriller Novels And More...

I did not plan on spending my entire Saturday reading this book, but here we are, and I'm so glad I did! I've had this on pre-order and when I got it, right away I got pulled in by the cover art at it's full size on my reader. Beautiful. Then I started reading and hours later here I am writing a review for what is my new favorite book, character and writer! (Yes, that just happened) I read this was M.M. Crumley's debut but it feel like this author has been around forever, I was completely hooked by page two! This book grabbed me by the neck and wouldn't let go. I don't know where to start and I don't want to ruin anything with spoilers, but i can talk about the characters safely so I will. As a kid I learned about the tall tale character Pecos Bill but he was only in like one Disney cartoon and he roped a tornado, that was all I ever saw of him. This story follows the REAL Pecos Bill and even makes fun of the legends being campy compared to the real him. He somehow has access to what they call the 'power' (I assume we will learn how as the series goes on) and with it he can do anything. So he's like this super cool, real hero guy who fights stuff like on the show supernatural. There are 'Carnivorous dust devils' and skin walkers and all these monsters and he stops them all so he's like this gritty cowboy superhero. And the character of Andrew really grows and changes and it's so inspiring to me to see him go from being a punk modern day idiot and turn into someone willing to die to protect other people that he doesn't even know. The change feels so real as he struggles through the whole story. It is one of those stories i feel like i will remember for the rest of my life. And about the writing, there was no fluffy descriptions that make the book longer than it needs to be, i hate that, the description was just what was needed to see it all in my mind without going into tons of unneeded detail. It read so fast and smooth I didn't even realize I'd been reading all day. I turned around and ordered the printed book for my cousins birthday present.
This is seriously the most promising series I think I've ever read! Absolutely worth your time! A must read!
Saw Regnum (The Immortal Doc Holiday Series) as a free epub and thought why not. After running through it, I was turned on and started reading Dark Awakening. Fought NOT to put it down. My opinion, it is amazing!!! Mix of the rugged western with myths and fantasy thrown in. Ms. Crumley says she writes as if her characters are real and I BELIEVE IT!! I was so involved with Andrew and Pecos as well as Joe, Doyle and Charlie. You could see them and hear them in your mind just as if you were talking to them in person. Ms. Crumley has captured the cowboy essence. I remember great uncles telling me the same lines that are in the book… “just do.” And the like. Doyle being one of my favorite characters. Especially after reading Regnum and realizing my father uttered MANY of the same words as Doyle, Dark Awakening gave me a deeper look into the man. If I didn’t know better, I could almost swear that Ms. Crumley had met my father at some point. Once I get done with the Rufus series, I’ll be onto Doc Holiday.
If anyone is interested in westerns, read this. If anyone is interested in the fantasy world, read this. If anyone likes reading a story where the characters come alive… read this.
What if Harry Potter met Katniss Everdeen and Mark Twain told the story? Well...you'd still have a long way to go to describe this unique yet charming story. Crumley's debut is nothing short of genius. Andrew Rufus is too young and too inexperienced to save the world, and yet he's been put in the position to do just that--so, needless to say, he has to grow up rather quickly. All of Crumley's characters, from Andrew to rough-and-gruff Pecos Bill and his sidekicks, are well-drawn and relatable in their own way. Andrew and Pecos are tied together inextricably for some unknown purpose, and neither knows how to remedy the situation. It's this (along with the inevitable destruction of the world by a gigantic snake) that keeps me turning pages. I can't wait to read book 2!
I absolutely loved the whole concept of a teen from modern times dropped into the old west but not the old west because there are carnivorous dust devils and skin walkers (which are basically like werewolves) and spirits and ancient beings walking around and attacking people all the time and Pecos Bill is this like supernatural monster fighting cowboy hero, who goes around stopping evil stuff.
The whole idea was so refreshing I enjoyed every minute! There was no boring long winded descriptions just to make the book longer. I could see everything and hear every one so well. The writing was superb, I completely recommend this book!
I really wanted to like this book I tried over and over to finish it but could not!! The main character was not likable or even be able to sympathise with him!! The writer kept running it in the ground that he missed his mother!!
3.5 Why Would Anyone Steal A Horse Named Widow Maker Stars
Dark Awakening is the first book in The Legend of Andrew Rufus by M. M. Crumley.
This is a good starting point. I've been reading so much about the man Doc Holliday knew and respected that its sort of warped the fact he had to grow into the Legend. However, I'm just as annoyed with the 'Just do' of it all. There's not nearly enough definition behind the mystery. I want to learn more, and I'm excited about all of the possibilities, and the secrets these characters possess. Even when Doc spoke of Andrew there was still so much even he didn't know or understand. Which makes me excited to breach the secrets only Andrew knows the answer to.
Because I've read Doc's series first I know what the darkness is and the Grey Shaman. Never met the White in any of his books, she was mysteriously absent. So at least, she will be a wonderful surprise.. I hope? I do wonder why the darkness is targeting Pecos? Does it have anything to do with Andrew?
Why was it neccessary for Andrew to be dumped into Pecos' body? Was that an accident? The Grey Shaman seemed surprised, and if he's not the cause of this I'll be shocked. I think maybe he needed to learn through Pecos, Charles, Doyle, and Joe about the power, or rather how to tap into it. Seems it's not something that could be forced, must be asked and accepted? Will it work now that he's in his own body?
What will bring Andrew and Pecos back together? Will they share Pecos' body again, or will Andrew truly time travel himself; body and mind? Or is that not until later?
After finishing the Doc Holliday series, if you haven’t read them I highly recommend them, I wanted more of this author. To my great delight I find another series about a character mentioned in the Doc Holliday books. (I’m not sure if you should read this series or Doc Holliday first. I think you can do either one.)
So I sat awake until very late in the evening to finish the first in this series. I wish I had more time because I feel as if I have barely begun this story. Set aside some time, because you are going to be sucked into this story and will not be able to stop reading until it is over.
I loved The Immortal Doc Holliday series where Doc talked a lot about Andrew. So I couldn't imagine Andrew's story would be nearly as good.
Boy was I WRONG!!!
Though it's Andrew's story, it's so much more!!!
It's Pecos, Doyle, Charlie, and Joe's story. And Widow Maker's story. And Aylen, Ahanu, and Meli's stories. And The Raven's story. And Dean, Frank & Jessie, Sam, and Nunya's stories. And Fred & Clara. And Mom & Vick.
Strange and fun take on Pecos Bill and his companions as Pecos' body is taken over by a modern teen. With some overtones from American folklore (or is it fakelore?), the story meanders through the wild West creating another legend. I grew up reading mythology and folklore so this has just enough diverse characters to make it a new tall tale.
This book is part of a series, but I am not planning to read the next one. I just feel its missing soemthing major. There are highs and lows in the book, but theres not enough of an actual story. Just a journey with no real reason for the MC to be there. I didnt fall in love with any of the characters and do not feel invested at all.
I am becoming a huge fan of MM. Crumley! I was hooked from the first chapter. Andrew and his friends are amazing characters! The story told beautifully. It was so good, I couldn't put it down. While Doc is still my favorite, Andrew is a close second! Love both of these series!
Started reading the Immortal Doc Holliday and was guided to avoid spoilers to read Andrew Rufus' story. I'm so glad I'm here doing that. Another great read. Great characters and such great story telling I WAS there!! Off now to read the next Andrew Rufus book.
DNF 51% Overall this was decently written, up to where I stop, and the characters weren't bad, I just didn't like Andrew. He was too whiny and yeah he was 13 but come on... This book was repetitive and even though it was funny still felt like a young adult novel. I would hand this to a teenage boy to read for fun, but I'll pass.
What happens when a young boy is transported to the old wild west and into the body of Pecos Bill.
Took A bit to really get into the story, once started it did get interesting, the internal dialogue between the kid and Pecos was great.plus his interaction with the other cowboys.
A mash of Percy Jackson meets Harry Potter in the old west. Enjoyable read that reminded me of the book I read in fourth grade “Indian in the cupboard”. Fast paced and full of contrast and growing up. Impressed.
Having read all of the Immortal Doc Holliday books so far, I had to go back and read Andrew’s story, because he was such a big part of Doc’s story. I’m so glad that I decided to do that.
This is an interesting story about a boy (Andrew) that goes back in time and ends up in another’s body. Looking forward to seeing where the author will go with the characters.
I absolutely loved the Doc Holliday series, so naturally it led me to this series. Cannot say enough great things about this book! It is a must-read, just be ready to binge read the whole series!
Wow, can I review my own book? What can I say? I wrote this book, so obviously it's amazing! I've read it no less than fifteen times, and every time I'm like "I love this book!". Seriously.
I enjoy character books, and this is a great character book. BUT it's also an action book. An ACTION book! Sometimes in action books the character gets lost a little, but not in this book. You'll love it!
